NARS Unsung Heroes: Heat Wave Lipstick

December 23rd, 2011 by Karen 12 Comments

nars heat wave (2)

A few things I learned (and in some cases relearned) in 2011:

  1. It’s easy to fall back into old habits, one of which for me was comparing myself to others, but it’s a recipe for misery cake and serves no useful purpose.
  2. Tim Gunn is my Obi-Wan! Whenever I find myself in a pickle, I close my eyes and ask, “What would Tim Gunn do?” And then (I like to imagine) he materializes — a life coach/style Jedi — to dispense golden nuggets of advice.
  3. Red lipstick could be the most powerful force in the Universe (even stronger than gravity). 🙂

So maybe that third one’s a slight exaggeration, but I will say that red lipsticks always make me feel better — especially bright, cheerful reds like NARS Heat Wave ($24).

It makes even mundane tasks, like trips to Trader Joe’s, a million times more fun. I wore it there a few days ago and made a new makeup-loving friend on the staff.

I Can’t Imagine Falling Out of Love with Laura Mercier’s New Baked Eye Colour Palette

December 22nd, 2011 by Karen 15 Comments

Are they macarons, or are they eyeshadows? Well, that depends. The baked beauties in Laura Mercier’s new Baked Eye Colour Palette ($48) just might be a bit of both.

Like macarons, they make me smile. 🙂 All five of the shimmery shadows in brown, bronze, beige, pink and purple deposit very little fallout on my cheeks, and I love the glowing, wide-awake look their punchy pigments bestow upon my eyes.

The palette, a holiday release, also comes with a time-saving surprise — a dual-tipped brush with a flat eyeshadow brush on one end and a dense, pointed cream shadow brush on the other. I’ve tried the shades both wet and dry with the flat shadow brush and got some fast, fresh looks, and because the shadows adhere to my lids so well, I didn’t have to spend any extra time cleaning up fallout on my cheeks.

Buxom True Hue, Baby I Love You: The New $24 Buxom True Hue Blushes Are Coming in February to Sephora

December 20th, 2011 by Karen 41 Comments

Calling all blushing beauties and buffs! — Buxom plans to introduce a new collection of colorful cheek products into their permanent line. The new True Hue family arrives in February, bursting with bold pigments and, according to Buxom, the powers of a plant called rhodiola.

Buxom claims that the plant, used for centuries by people in Russia and Scandinavia to cope with the stress and cold of Siberian life, makes cheeks wearing the True Hue blushes appear refreshed, but I’d probably give these pigments more credit for that. I find them very easy to manipulate, thanks to super smooth powders that are a breeze to build up or sheer down.

This particular blush buff wholeheartedly approves. 🙂

NARS Unsung Heroes: Damned Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

December 20th, 2011 by Karen 21 Comments

nars damned (1)

Lately (in case you haven’t noticed), I’ve had a thing for red lips. I look at them the same way I look at pairs of black shoes, which is to say that one tube (or pair) is never enough.

There are just so many different spins on the red lip motif, just as there are when it comes to black shoes. With the shoes, you’ve got your black high heels, low heels, stacked heels, platforms, and don’t get me started on the sub-shades of black.

It’s the same thing with crimson lip colors. Every one is unique, or at least different in some small but significant way.

Take NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Damned, for instance. This $24 jewel-toned reddish magenta could moonlight as a crimson crayon in its chubby packaging, and sometimes, when I’m lining and filling in my lips with it, I feel like I’m in art class. 🙂

NARS Unsung Heroes: Afghan Red Lipstick

December 19th, 2011 by Karen 26 Comments

nars afghan red (2)

Every year around this time, my regular weakness for red lipsticks turns into a serious condition, but even now, it’s usually treatable (with the careful administration of crimson cosmetics), except when I’ve been exposed to a jewel-toned red from NARS.

Then, the only cure is a tube of something like NARS Lipstick in Afghan Red ($24), a rich pinkish garnet. I tooled around town with this particular tube all weekend long, trying to keep the fever at bay…

To be safe, I should probably just keep it in my purse. 🙂

Never mind that my purse is already loaded down with compacts, other lippies, emergency cans of gravy and the occasional acorn, it never hurts to be prepared. Once you’ve been exposed to a shade like Afghan Red, you never know when another red lipstick episode will occur. Trying to predict them is like trying to forecast when terry cloth tracksuits will be back in style (read: impossible to know).

More Jackie than Marilyn, Afghan Red is a refined garnet. It says, “Bonjour, ladies and gentleman,” giving a slight wave of a cupped hand wearing pristine white gloves.

It’s not a color that needs to shout in order to be heard. Dab it on for a whisper light stain, or embrace opaque color by applying a single layer, as I did for these pics.

NYX Put Me in an Affectionate Mood With Their Latest $4.50 Lip Gloss

December 17th, 2011 by Karen 9 Comments

nyx mood lip gloss

“Sensory overload.”

That’s how I feel about many of NYX’s lip products due to their flavors and scents. Sometimes I think they’re just too strong, but I don’t feel that way about their new “Mood” Lip Gloss in Affectionate ($4.50), one of two new Mood Lip Glosses from NYX for the holidays (the second’s called Sensual, ooh-la-la!).

Still, Affectionate’s no lightweight when it comes to taste and scent. As soon as I remove the cap, the scent of strawberry hard candy fills the room. Subtle? Not hardly, but I find it kinda pleasant. At least I don’t think it tastes or smells synthetic, which is something, I guess.

The NYX Mood glosses take the idea of mood rings to new heights, beginning as one shade that changes to another once they’re on the lips. Affectionate starts out as a shimmery white but transforms into a natural-looking shade of shimmery pink (the pink doesn’t appear to vary for different wearers).

Prep, Cover and Finish: 3-Step Flawless Skin with the New Make Up For Ever Professional HD Complexion Starter Kit

December 15th, 2011 by Karen 19 Comments

make up for ever hd complexion starter kit

Over the course of many merry Christmases and happy New Years, I’ve been guilty of myriad makeup faux pas, a few of which were regrettably caught on film (the horror!). And never mind the oversized twinkling reindeer horn hats or Bedazzled sweaters I was probably wearing at the time. In some of those pics I’m sure I was showcasing blotchy red patches and an oily forehead.

Eek!

In an effort to keep history from repeating itself, this year I’m enlisting the help of Make Up For Ever’s new Professional HD Complexion Starter Kit ($79).

It’s either that, or run the risk of being caught in another holiday pic looking like I’ve had too many cups of eggnog…

Yeah, no thanks! 🙂

The new four-piece set is designed to deliver flawless skin in three simple steps — 1. Prep, 2. Cover and 3. Finish. Available now at Sephora stores and also online, it comes with one full-size HD High Definition Foundation, travel sizes of Make Up For Ever’s HD High Definition Primer in #0 and HD High Definition Powder, and an HD Microfinish Kabuki Brush.

My Lips Are Tingling Over These New Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Creams

December 14th, 2011 by Karen 20 Comments

Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Cream in Berry Blast

Applying one of Buxom’s new line of lip creams feels like kissing a peppermint candy cane…

Refreshing!

The seven super shiny plumping glosses in the new Big & Healthy Lip Cream line ($18 each) don’t arrive until February, well after the peak of candy cane season, but if I hadn’t known better, I would have thought they were a Christmas release.

Smelling like coconut buttercream and tasting like mint, they offer sheer-to-medium coverage that lasts about four hours on me. If MAC made a slightly thicker Cremesheen Glass that tingled, it would probably feel a lot like one of these creams, with a similarly smooth, non-sticky texture that feels great on my lips.

Buxom bestowed upon them a host of hydrating helpers like vitamins A and E, and something they call “hyaluronic filling spheres,” which the company claims can moisturize lips from the inside out, but they skipped the preservatives and parabens.

Unfortunately, those hydrating helpers haven’t really worked for me. After my first day with these, my lips began to feel a little tight and dry…
