YSL Fard Lumière Aquarésistant Water Resistant Cream Eyeshadow: For Eyes Like an Oasis

May 14th, 2010 by Karen 11 Comments

A desert princess might wear Yves Saint Laurent’s Water Resistant Cream Eyeshadow in Golden Sands to a royal banquet, but I’d probably wear it to the club. 🙂

New to YSL’s makeup line, it’s a very light, airy mousse eyeshadow, thinner than a regular cream but thicker than a liquid. One of six colors overall, it’s the only one to come out for summer 2010 (available now).

For $30, you get 0.22 oz of light peachy golden glitter for your eyes, like a sunset in a jar. As a shimmery wash over the entire lid, it’s a marvel, water-resistant and easier to use than a glittery powder that might leave fallout on my cheeks.

This particular shade isn’t very pigmented at all; it’s almost like glitter suspended in a mousse base, but judging by the swatches online, some of the other colors pack a stronger punch.

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick in Pink Lychee Lasts but a Moment, yet Still Makes an Impression

May 13th, 2010 by Karen 42 Comments

ysl pink lychee

There’s something poetic about Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick in Pink Lychee ($30) — how pretty yet fleeting it is, like butterflies, or a summertime tan.

By all appearances…

It’s one of two limited edition SPF 15 Pure Shine Lipsticks YSL released with their summer 2010 collection, the other being Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick in Blood Orange Blood Orange.

The first thing I thought after seeing it in the tube? — wow, that sure looks pale. I didn’t think I’d be able to wear it, but I’ve been surprised so many times before that I figured, who knows, right?

I really didn’t know what to expect and hoped it wouldn’t have that p0rn star opaque coverage we’ve seen from other light pink lippies.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Woodwinked Eyeshadow Fakes a Good Night’s Sleep

May 13th, 2010 by Karen 46 Comments

MAC Woodwinked Eyeshadow ($14.50) rocks harder than Metallica. 🙂 Like a beauty BFF, this shimmery shadow’s been with me through good times and bad. Brown in the pan, it applies like a lovely warm gold, and I find myself still reaching for it often because it’s one of those disbelief-suspending shades able to fake a good night’s sleep.

If I had to pick one shadow to have with me after an all-nighter, Woodwinked would be it. A few swipes of this permanent collection shadow on my lids, and I swear I look well rested.

The MAC Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorite products from MAC’s permanent collection…
  • MAC Unsung Hero: Powersurge Eye Kohl
  • MAC Unsung Heroes: All That Glitters Eyeshadow Is Not Just Another Gold
  • MAC Unsung Heroes: The Technakohl Liners
  • MAC Unsung Hero: Groundwork Paint Pot
  • MAC Unsung Hero: Nymphette Lipglass

MAC To The Beach: Breaking Waves and Hearts

May 12th, 2010 by Karen 51 Comments

FINALLY! After so many, many months of waiting, surfer girls, we’re going MAC To The Beach! — It’s a warm beach…and we’re walking along the shore, picking up sea shells, pretty pieces of coral, and starfishes like the ones that grace the limited edition packaging.

If I close my eyes and picture the delicious greens and corals in the collection, I feel relaxed and happy; if I listen hard enough and breath deeply, I can almost hear waves breaking and smell the salty air. 🙂

MAC To The Beach crashes onto North American counters May 27, but a handful of US and Canadian MAC stores will be hosting pre-release parties on May 18. To see if there’s a pre-release party in your area, give your local MAC store or counter a quick call.

Wrap it up!

Can I just take a second to marvel at the packaging? We’re talking ’70s, but in the best possible way.

The house I grew up in was built in the ’70s, and I remember some of these same colors (LOL!). Our kitchen walls were the exact same shade of pea green! Our countertops, the fridge, the dishes, and my mom’s treasured Pyrex mixing bowls were also in colors very much like the shades in To The Beach.

Well, they say everything old is new again, and I guess they’re right! 🙂 But coming across these shades in a West Elm or Pottery Barn would have been one thing; seeing them on a cosmetics counter is something else entirely. Way to go, MAC, for always pushing beauty forward, even when you’re looking back. Fusing the ’70s with an ocean theme? I mean, who does that?

Dior Addict Ultra Gloss: Smooth Texture, High Shine

May 10th, 2010 by Karen 24 Comments

Hey, babes. Before we bid an overdue adieu to this particular Monday (YAY!), let’s take a quick look at a few of the glosses from Dior’s new Addict Ultra Gloss line ($27).

dior addict ultra gloss

This a-dior-able line of 12 glosses features a lightweight texture and ultra high shine. Dior incorporated penetrating hyaluronic spheres — dehydrated microspheres of hyaluronic acid — to plump the lips — and what they call micropearls to keep lips hydrated, smooth and shiny.

So did their science experiment work?

YSL Blue Lagoon Mascara Aquaresistant: A Cure for the Blues?

May 10th, 2010 by Karen 23 Comments

How do you feel about blue mascara and lashes? That’s a tricky one, isn’t it? For years I wasn’t sure where I stood on the subject. They’re almost like the Zac Efrons of the makeup world — people find them either terribly exciting, or not exciting at all.

There was a time I’d spot someone wearing blue lashes and think, “Sooo ’80s,” but now I’m seeing blue in a whole new light…

What can blue do for you?

Well, if you have brown eyes, A LOT! It’s hard to ignore a fringe of blue lashes batting above a pair of big brown eyes.

Swatch of YSL Blue Lagoon Mascara Aquaresistant

But if you have eyes of a different color, one or two coats of a shimmery neutral gold, beige or brown on your lids equals an easy and eye-catching, yet highly wearable summertime look. 🙂

YSL Mascara Aquaresistant in Blue Lagoon

Before you plunk down your money for a new (or your first) blue mascara, take a quick look at YSL’s electric blue Mascara Aquaresistant in Blue Lagoon ($30) from the company’s summer makeup collection. It’s a new waterproof addition to YSL’s permanent collection, and I wore it a lot last weekend because it does something on my lashes that most blue mascaras don’t — it actually works!

With one layer of Blue Lagoon

Some tinted mascaras just don’t show up on my dark black lashes at all. Maybe they aren’t thick enough or don’t catch the light effectively, I don’t know, but Blue Lagoon practically SHOUTS!

What’s Write about Clarins Instant Sun Light Click & Gloss?

May 8th, 2010 by Karen 19 Comments

Clarins Instant Sun Light Click & Gloss SPF 6
Steno stores are so much fun, aren’t they? I can spend hours shopping for themed notebooks, mechanical pencils, art pen sets, fancy letterhead, scented erasers and Hello Kitty pencil sharpeners…

Maybe that’s why I’m a sucker for makeup in pen form. When I hear those words, “makeup in pen form,” something comes over me (no, it’s not Justin Bieber Fever!).

Have you given the new Clarins Instant Sun Light Click & Gloss SPF 6 lipglosses a try? Part of the Instant Sun Light Summer Make-Up Collection, they’re $18 each — an exorbitant price for steno, yes, but not totally out of line for a gloss. 🙂

They come with a cool click pen brush applicator in three sheer, shimmery shades.

Clarins Instant Smooth Compact Highlighter in 01 Natural Has Something Subtle to Say

May 7th, 2010 by Karen 9 Comments

With summer en route, my appetite for brighter colors gets bigger every day, but it’s not so big yet that I can’t get behind something subtle like Clarins Instant Smooth Compact Highlighter in 01 Natural ($32, also available in a darker shade called 02 Bronze Clarins Instant Sun Light Highlighter in Bronze ).

Speaking of natural, it’s natural to like a silky smooth cream highlighting skin balm, and the one in the new Clarins Instant Sun Light Makeup collection totes reminds me of Benefit’s velvety Dr. Feelgood.

01 Natural’s sheer peachy pink tint quietly shines with subtle golden shimmer for a very fresh, youthful cheek that doesn’t look overdone at all.
