Clarins Wonder Volume Mascara in Black Reflections Adds a Little Sparkle and Shine

November 27th, 2009 by Karen 20 Comments

Clarins Wonder Volume Mascara Black Reflections Review swatch2

I gotta hand it to the cooks in Clarins’ kitchen. They consistently cook up fun mascaras for their seasonal collections (remember the teal terror?).

This time they went all sparkly on us with limited edition Wonder Volume Mascara in Black Reflections ($24), from the Palazzo d’Oro holiday collection.

First I was afraid; I was petrified. Kept thinking I could never liiiive without you by my side. But I spent so many nights, thinking how you did me wrong, I grew strong. I learned how to carry on!

Sorry about that… Gloria Gaynor moment. 🙂

What I mean to say was, at first I expected Black Reflection to be too glittery for me. While it’s a traditional black mascara, Clarins really loaded it with silver shimmer.

But I think Clarins did something remarkably well with it that makes it doable for a range of daytime looks.

Hold me closer, tiny glitter!

They milled and milled and milled! The glitter bits in Black Reflections are so tiny and elegant — no disco diva glitter here — that some folks may not even notice at first glance. Upon closer inspection, however, the glitter dances and shimmers in the light.

This is what I call *really good glitter.*

I usually reach for black mascaras (more often than tinted ones), but sometimes I find myself wanting a little something extra — exactly the times I think Black Reflections will come in handy.

Urban Decay Unsung Hero: 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Bourbon

November 27th, 2009 by Karen 74 Comments

urban decay 24 7 glide one eye pencil in bourbon tip

Urban Decay’s creamy, long-wearing 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils come in a rainbow of gorgeous colors, but my favorite has to be Bourbon ($17).

She’s brown with golden glitter, and we’ve been friends since last spring, when I spotted a mini-Bourbon pencil in Urban Decay’s Get Baked Palette ($28).

Within a month I’d worn it down to a nub!

Ever since then, time and again, I’ve reached for Bourbon (on the rocks, ha!) when I’ve wanted a little sparkle. Its golden flecks lighten my lids in a subtle way, but not so subtle that I can’t appreciate the difference. It’s glitter, after all, and what’s the point of wearing glitter if you can’t enjoy the bling? 🙂

Tarte Crown Jewels Lipgloss Multi-Gift Set: A Royal Bargain!

November 23rd, 2009 by Karen 50 Comments

Tarte Crown Jewels Lipgloss Multi Gift Set

Oh, destiny, art thou doomed to repeat thy makeup mistakes?

Every year I stock up on makeup sets under false pretenses, intending to give them away as gifts, but year after year I end up keeping one (or two or three!) for myself.

Never again… Yes, I’ve found a cure!

Tarte’s Crown Jewels Lipgloss Multi-Gift Set ($40) lets me gift unto others while indulging upon myself. 🙂

With 15 glosses spread out among three different sub-sets, there’s more than enough makeup here to satisfy my inner makeup monster (if only for a moment).

Each of the three sub-sets is based on a different color theme (nude, bold and glitter) and comes with five tubes of gloss, with the idea being to keep one set for yourself (hey, I can do that!) and give the other two away.

Genius!

Lip Lessons: What Can Brown Do for You?

November 22nd, 2009 by Karen 26 Comments

Rae rules! We’ve been put on notice today — theNotice, that is. The faboo Rae of theNotice blog shares one of her favorite lip tricks with brown liner.

Photo-A-rae-guest-post

Brown lip liners… What can I say about them other than “Hello, ’90s”? Here’s the thing: I think they’re ugly, and not normal ugly, but, like, horrendous.

We’re not talking about sheer browns or reddish-browns either. We’re talking about true brown lip colours — opaque browns — like Paula Dorf’s Voodoo pencil ($20).

It would make a stunning eyeliner. In fact, I’d call it perfect, with its gorgeous chocolate brown base and the most wonderful gold flecks.

Photo-B-rae-guest-post

But it’s not an eyeliner. Oh, no. It’s not.

Photo-C-rae-guest-post

I wanted to see what kind of lip Voodoo I could do with Voodoo, so I started by layering it underneath a coral gloss.

The experiment failed…

Photo-D-rae-guest-post

Luckily, a true beauty addict never gives up! When a product calls to you, you make that baby work.

Next, I figured I’d try layering it with a red lipstick — something from my stash that people rave about, something like MAC’s infamous Dubonnet lipstick.

As much as I like Dubonnet, I can’t wear it without layering the heck out of it — sometimes over a burgundy liner, other times topped with black gloss.

On it went overtop Voodoo…

Did Stila Lip Glaze Sing a Solo in this Week’s Episode of Glee?

November 19th, 2009 by Karen 32 Comments

glee-top

Hey, cheerios! Did any of my eagle-eyed makeup geeks/freaks peep the Stila Lip Glaze lookalike in this week’s episode of Glee?

Yesterday’s migraine rendered me mentally useless, so I spent last night on the couch resting and catching up on Glee, the musical dramedy about misfit teens who sing show choir.

It took me a few episodes to warm up to the show — the pacing’s kinda weird — but now I’m hooked. The world needs more spontaneous musical numbers, right? And I’m totes crushing on Mr. Shu, played by Matthew Morrison. 🙂

oh-hai-mr-shu-1

In this week’s ep, Rachel, one of the glee club girls, is primping in the bathroom with a gloss that looks an awfully lot like Stila Lip Glaze.

Hmm…

The Stila Kitten Holiday Set: Take Two of These and Call Me in the Morning

November 19th, 2009 by Karen 47 Comments

stila kitten collection and tabs
Stila spokesmodel Tabs the Cat…

Rise and shine, morning glories. 🙂 How’d you sleep? Tabs tells me it’s going to be a beautiful day today. He’s been taking good care of me, and my headache’s all but gone. I guess the bed rest and Stila Kitten holiday set swatches ($18 limited edition, one of 10 new Stila sets at Sephora) he prescribed finally did the trick.

This particular two-piece set comes with one full-size eyeshadow pan and a Lip Glaze, both in Kitten, the shimmery, peachy champagne shade much beloved by Stila fans and tubby makeup-loving cats. Stamp of makeup approval

Making Subtle Wishes Come True: Smashbox Wish for the Perfect Pout

November 17th, 2009 by Karen 31 Comments

Smashbox Wish For the Perfect Pout Swatches box

Resistance is futile, y’all. Lipgloss value sets are falling from the sky!

If your makeup M.O. involves subtle, sheer colors that shine, you may be tempted by Smashbox’s Wish for the Perfect Pout ($29) (one of nine new holiday gift sets from Smashbox).

Dressed to the nines in a hot pink and silver box, these six tubes will be hard to miss on many a makeup counter this winter.

The set comes with four deluxe sample tubes and two full-size ones, each shade wearable by itself as a light-to-medium wash of color, or layered on top of a favorite lippie for added sparkle and shine.

Color 411

Have I said these are sheer? Yup, that they are. There’s not a huge difference among the shades.

  • Medium thickness with a non-sticky texture
  • Semi-sheer pigmentation similar to MAC Cremesheens
  • Flavorless
  • Faint cinnamon scent that dissipates within a minute or two of application

For the holidays, Smashbox pledges to donate $1 from each purchase (up to $25,000) to the Children’s Miracle Network, 🙂 a non-profit organization helping kids affected by disease and injury.
