Share Your Look: The St. Patrick’s Day Edition

March 17th, 2009 by Karen 16 Comments

share-your-look-1

Hiya, girls! Because we’re all Irish today , I’m celebrating St. Paddy’s with a green shirt, green eyeshadow and a few pints of green beer — just kidding! — green tea. El Hub really is part Irish, and I’m planning to go to the store this afternoon to get stuff for corned beef and cabbage, yum.

I dunno if we’ll go out for green beer tonight… We shall see!

Anyhoo, I think it would be kinda fun if we did another round of Share Your Look. Send in your look for today or tonight. If you’re going green, great, but your look doesn’t have to be green. The sky’s the limit.

Inspire me!

My St. Paddy’s Day look’s posted above, and I’m putting together a tutorial for it right now.

  • Eyes: MAC Paint Pot in Painterly, MAC Eye Kohl in Powersurge, MAC Pigment in Golden Olive, MAC Pigment in Gold Mode, MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, MAC Eyeshadow in Humid, MAC Glitter Reflects Antique Gold, Chanel Exceptionnel Mascara
  • Lips: Chanel Aqualumiere Gloss in Tangerine Dream
  • Cheeks: Benefit Coralista Blush
  • A description of my look: I wanted this shimmery gold and green eye to match my green polo. This look’s basically a neutral eye with some extra color on the lid.

It’s still pretty neutral (i.e. safe for non-St. Patrick’s Day use), but I dusted Reflects Antique Gold over the entire lid for a touch of sparkle.

Your turn!

Share your look by filling out this form. Attach a picture (or a link), and feel free to cut loose. Cats, dogs and mugs of green beer are totally allowed.

FEED OR EMAIL READERS: I haven’t figured out how to get the form to work correctly from the feed or the emails yet. I think it’s possible, but for now, if you’re reading this on the feed, please click this link if you want to fill out the form.

Your friendly neighborhood (Irish) beauty addict,

Karen

Smooth It Out With Cargo Plant Love Eyeliner

March 16th, 2009 by Karen 15 Comments

cargo plant love eyeliner

Cargo Plant Love Eyeliner’s ($16) soft, creamy texture glides on smoother than a ’90s Babyface ballad, and just like one of his sexy slow jams, it holds up well over time.

If I swipe some on my lash line before my first cup of coffee in the morning, Plant Love’s rich color lasts until my last gulp of Sleepytime tea at night.

Fans of Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils might find a lot to like about Plant Love. It has a similar texture and longevity, but Urban Decay liners set quicker. Plant Love stays smudgeable for about three minutes versus 30 seconds for Urban Decay. The extra time comes in handy when I’m doing a smokey eye with lots of blending and smudging.

There are six liners in the Plant Love liner collection. I’ve taken a look at Midnight Blue and Black.

  • Midnight Blue, a shimmery grayish slate blue, makes my brown eyes pop if I do a smokey eye by drawing a line of Midnight Blue on my upper lash line, and then smudge a shimmery gray, blue or beige eyeshadow powder shadow directly on top.
  • Black applies as a rich, true black with no blue undertones. I think it looks great when layered beneath a shimmery brown, pink or beige.

Describe your look:
“I used MAC 224SE brush to apply Satisfy (the light pink shade from the Holiday 2008 Cool Eyes Palette) all over the eye, focusing on the highlight area under the brow. I used the MAC 275 SE brush to generously apply Bon Fete just to the lid and the MAC 219SE brush to apply Wild Ruby to the crease. I used the 224SE to blend the color in the crease thoroughly. With the Bare Escentuals tapered shadow and eyeliner brush (using the liner end), I applied Wild Ruby as dry eyeliner to the outer corner of the eye on the top and bottom lid. I finished the look with the Sephora brand Jumbo Eye Pencil in 507 in the inner corner of the eye, on the top and bottom lid, and to the middle of the eye where I blended it with the darker liner. Curled lashes and applied two coats of mascara.”

MBB Babe: Ines from Korea

Describe your look:
“I used MAC’s Phloof eyeshadow on my brow bone as a highlighter. Then, I used Fyrinnae’s Faerie Glamour eyeshadow dust on my lids up until my crease. I lined both upper and lower lids with Urban Decay’s Ransom eye liner, then lined my lower waterline with MAC’s Smoulder eye kohl. I topped it off with black DiorShow mascara. It’s definitely not a ‘tame’ look, but I love it when I’m feeling colorful and daring!”

Share Your Look: What Makeup Are You Wearing?

March 15th, 2009 by Karen 18 Comments

barbie loves stila makeup blog beauty blog

Happy Sunday, pretties!

I was having a lot of fun with these picture frames in Photoshop this morning and thought, “Hmm… wouldn’t it be cool to take YOUR pictures and do a roundup of them like the other pictures in this post?”

So let’s do it!

If you have access to a digital camera, take a picture of your makeup and send it to me in this form (or send a link). Include the names of the products you’re wearing and a description of your look.

I’ll take a bunch of the looks and put them together in a resource post with a sprinkling of Photoshoppery, some comic bubbles, some pretty picture frames and perhaps a guest appearance by Tabs.

I think it’ll be cool to be able to see a bunch of different looks together in the same post.

Whatever look you’re wearing, share it with the form and attach a photo (or a link, like to Flickr, Photobucket or pics on your blog).

Here’s my look today…

  • Eyes: Stila Jewel Palette, Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner in Bronze, Benefit Samba-dy Loves Me, Cargo Plant Love Eyeliner in Black, Stila Lash Visor Waterproof Mascara in Black
  • Lips: Nars Lip Liner in Morocco, Stila Lip Glaze in Jewel, Stila Pearl Shimmer Gloss in Pearl Kitten
  • Cheeks: Stila Jewel Palette

A description of my look: El Hub and I are heading out to brunch, so I’m going a little casual today with shimmery brown eyes, pink cheeks and a shimmery brownish pink lip. I started with the palette and lipgloss from the Jewel Stila Loves Barbie can. I’ve been repping the scarf/gold hoops combo in my pics lately, but that’s because my hair’s been absolutely out of control!

I’m off to devour some banana pancakes. Talk to ya in a few. 🙂

Chanel Summer 2009 Cote D’Azur: 3 Ways to Wear Tangerine Dream Aqualumiere Gloss

March 14th, 2009 by Karen 16 Comments

chanel summer 2009 cote dazur tangerine dream aqualumiere gloss

When I checked out the Chanel Cote D’Azur summer collection earlier this week, its vibrant shades of red, orange, pink and bronze Aqualumiere Glosses made my lipgloss-lovin’ heart skip a few beats. I loved all the colors, but one shade stood out from the rest — a shimmery orange shade called Tangerine Dream.

Like a fiery Hawaiian sunset in the tube, she applies as a semi-sheer orange with shimmery golden flecks on the lips.

If you like peach, coral or gold lipsticks, you may also like Tangerine Dream. I think she plays nicely with other shades in those families.

This morning I wanted to pretend it was summer, so I tried a summery lip with Tangerine Dream above a layer Benefit’s Gilded Pencil.

And I think it’s a combo that’d work well with a coral blush like Benefit Coralista on the cheeks.

For the eyes, I might wear something green (in honor of St. Patrick’s Day), like two products from the upcoming MAC Sugarsweet collection, Aquavert Eyeshadow and Cakeshop Shadestick.

Speaking of MAC Sugarsweet, there’s a lipstick in the release called Lollipop Loving. It’s a shimmery peach with green and golden pearl. I thought she might work with Tangerine Dream and gave her a try.

Barbie Loves Stila: Swatches, Pictures and All-Around Hotness

March 11th, 2009 by Karen 16 Comments

Barbie Loves Stila Can top view

Heya, pretties! How’s your Wednesday coming along? I’m a little giddy right now because I just met some friends for coffee.

My new homegirls, Foxy and Jewel, are two of the four limited edition beauty cans from Stila’s new Barbie Loves Stila collection ($40 each).

I must admit, as I sat there slurping java through a straw (gotta avoid staining those chompers!), I felt a little underwhelming in the presence of such hotties. Foxy and Jewel look so glamorous-flossy-flossy in their hot pink canisters.

But these girls aren’t just pretty on the outside; they each come with lipgloss, mascara and a gaw-geous coordinating palette with two eyeshadows and a blush.

Foxy’s sassy, summery orange, gold and berry shades are hard to ignore.

She’s the girl who commands attention when she enters a room, whereas Jewel’s the consummate girl next door (who just happens to be stunning, LOL!). Her makeup in shades of pink, peach and brown is all about flirty and fun.

Pair BareMinerals Buxom Big and Healthy Lip Polish with Your Next Bright or Bold Eye

March 10th, 2009 by Karen 32 Comments

bare minerals buxom lips candi dolly

I can’t help myself when it comes to QVC. It sucks me in!

Other people in my life (mainly El Hub and the cat) fail to see why watching a show to sell lipgloss or hair dryers can be so compelling, but I like to think of it as educational television. I’m just trying to expand my mind. 🙂

A few weeks ago I caught a segment featuring the Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish lipglosses by BareMinerals ($18), a San Francisco company famous for their mineral foundation kits.

Bare escentuals buxom lips dolly

The girls modeling the product had extra pouty lips that made me stand up and take notice. “Hmm…”

Sure, Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish is a plumping lipgloss, but it looked like it was working a little too well. Maybe it was the set lighting. That’s when I had a Mark Anthony moment: I *needed to know* if these glosses worked as well as it looked they did.

I tested two of the 15 colors — Candi (shimmery coral) and Dolly (shimmery pale pink).

The saucy packaging has cartoon pics of sassy girls in their skivvies. The box boldly claims that 86 percent of women who use Buxom Big & Healthy experience an “immediate increase in lip fullness.” WOW!

Okay, so I applied it and waited for the magic to happen.

After a minute, no magic yet, but I’m used to waiting for miracles.
