The Monday Poll: What Was Your Biggest Makeup/Beauty Accomplishment of 2017, and What Are Your Biggest Beauty Goals for 2018?

January 1st, 2018 by Karen 78 Comments

Last pair of eyes of 2017! ??? (Dampen your brush for more impact this New Years Eve ?) Shadow courtesy of @bobbibrown ?

A post shared by S I R J O H N (@sirjohnofficial) on Dec 19, 2017 at 9:59am PST

My biggest makeup/beauty accomplishment was finally getting back into makeup after not being very interested in it throughout most of 2016, and also, with that, figuring out that I could do my makeup in a relatively short amount of time (it is possible!).

Because prior to last year, I’d always had it in my head that in order to do beautiful makeup — and I know that beautiful is a subjective term — but in order to do fantastic brows, eyes, base makeup and lips, it had to be this complicated, time-consuming process that required two hours at a minimum, because that’s how long it always took me.

But early last year I read something by Sir John (@sirjohnofficial), who’s one of my makeup heroes. He does these understated, elegantly natural but simultaneously glam looks that blow my mind, and he said that one of the things that helped his career early on was the fact that he was fast and could get makeup on the models very quickly.

Had a killer time working with @olivier_rousteing & @nabilharlow for the #BalmainxLoreal presentation.?? @nabilharlow you're the best!! Major things coming from @lorealmakeup ?and @balmain

A post shared by S I R J O H N (@sirjohnofficial) on Jul 21, 2017 at 8:16am PDT

So, basically, every time I put on makeup last year, I gave myself 15-20 min max to do whatever the look was, whether it was something basic to go to the library for story time, or glam with lashes and everything. I gave myself 20 minutes, and that was my cutoff.

I learned that I still have a lot to learn, but now I can do a lot of makeup in 20 minutes. Much more than I could before.

A few things really helped. The first thing, and I think it’s the biggest thing, is that I learned to look for opportunities to combine products, and to view products perhaps in a way that you don’t usually see them traditionally used in YouTube videos, where it’s all step by step, where you do foundation first, then you do concealer, then powder, and you put everything all over your face.

So now when I want to wear heavier coverage, sometimes I’ll mix my concealer into my foundation to save myself a step, instead of applying them both separately.

Also, I learned that bronzer is surprisingly flexible. I learned that I can just use bronzer on my cheeks to warm up my skin, add some structure, even though I’m not a big contouring person, and then I can skip the blush. Bronzer goes a long way, and I also embraced using bronzer as a crease color, which I know I’ve talked about before, and MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Give Me Sun! is my current fave and has been for a long time. They have a satin finish, so they reflect some light and don’t look flat, which also means that you don’t have to spend forever and a day blending them, and they don’t look super powdery or heavy. Plus, a pan will last you FOREVER. I’ve had my pan of Give Me Sun! for years, and I’ve barely put a dent in it.

Hourglass also makes one called Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Radiant Light that’s a tiny bit shinier than the MAC Mineralize Skinfinishes, so when I want to look extra glow-y and healthy, that’s the bronzer I use.

Also in the time-saving vein, but with a lot of complex looks, gradients are a big deal — the transitions from one color into the next, light to dark, that kind of thing. A lot of the time, you’ll see them done using a multi-step process, with lots of individual eyeshadows seamlessly blended into each other. One thing I learned last year and do all the time now is that you can use the same black pencil that you tightline with, and run it along the top of your lash line… I only do it halfway, from the outer corner to the midpoint. I’ll do a thin line — not too much, because if I do too much, it’s too much to contend with. Then I’ll smudge the edges with a brush. Then, I’ll take a cream shadow or a creamy pencil in a different color — something lighter, like a taupe, gold or bronze — and do a thick line all the way across the top lash line, from the inner corner to the outer corner, so it’s layered on top of that black. Then I’ll blend everything together with my finger, and I’ll have that look of that gradient without a lot of complicated doohickery.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer Update: Six New Shades Join the Full-Coverage Crew

December 28th, 2017 by Karen 17 Comments

nars radiant creamy conealers swatches new top
There are six new shades of NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer ($30 each).

Waaay back in 2013 when NARS introduced the Radiant Creamy Concealers, they were revolutionary, but there were only 10 of them. They had lots of pigment and a spectacular satin finish that covered everything — dark circles, blemishes, cat scratches on your cheeks (which, yes, I can attest to from personal experience). They covered EVERYTHING, and they shook up the makeup world.

Since then, so many other brands have come out with their own full-coverage, mousse-y concealer thangs (see: Urban Decay and Kevyn Aucoin).

Fast forward to 2016…

NARS added more shades; the makeup world rejoiced!

Time hop to today, and now there are six more shades, bringing the grand total up to 22. By comparison, MAC has 16 in their Pro Longwear Concealer range and 23 in their Studio Finish Concealer range, and Urban Decay has 14 in both their Naked Skin and All Nighter concealer fams.

Fun fact: You can also use the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealers as highlighters or contour shades.

Most of the newbies have yellow or golden undertones (extra ideal if you have lots of yellow in your skin tone).

Truffle, Walnut, Sucre D’Orge, Tiramisu, Marron Glace and Cafe Con Leche

I know a lot of people who love using Radiant Creamy Concealer to hide dark circles, and I wish I loved it for that too, but it settles into my fine lines after a few hours, so I primarily use (and love using them!) as an alternative to foundation.

For all-day natural-looking medium coverage, I like to mix a teeny, tiny amount of Ginger and Caramel (two of the old-school shades) with either MAC Strobe Cream or BECCA Backlight to thin them out a little. Then I pat that on my cheeks and around my nose with my fingers.

The Tom Ford Winter Soleil Collection Lip Slicks in Red Nectar, Spiked Cherry, Hibiscus Kiss and Bitten Berry

December 22nd, 2017 by Karen 4 Comments

Red Nectar, Spiked Cherry, Hibiscus Kiss and Bitten Berry Lip Slicks by Tom Ford

OK, these are not for your pulse points. The new Tom Ford Lip Slicks look like roller ball perfumes, but they’re for lips (MWAH!), not wrists.

These lip oils do smell good, though… A little like vanilla, and they taste like it, to, so if you get any crazy ideas, who am I to deny you the thrill of slathering the crook of your neck with a luminous, jojoba- and coconut-laced lip oil?

Knock yourself out, kid.

I’ll be saving each precious drop of these juicy $54 click-y tubes o’ tint for my pout, which is no longer demanding the moisture it so richly deserves thanks to these hydrating helpers.

I’m kinda surprised I like them as much as I do, considering how slippery they are. But the oils feel good. So good… Especially when you’re rubbing the roller ball back and forth, back and forth…

I actually just stopped typing so I could do it with Hibiscus Kiss, and y-e-s, it was satisfying. Just like a Snickers.

Tom is frickin’ crazy if he thinks many women will throw down $54 for a lip tint, but I have to say, I’ve happily handed over $42 to the Sephora monster quite a few times for the Hourglass No. 28 Lip Oil (which is just as moisturizing as this, but thicker, un-tinted and stickier), so $54, while borderline insane for what’s more or less a shiny, tinted lip oil, doesn’t seem like that much more of a jump. Or, that could just be me trying to justify the makeup math in my head. *shrugs*

The Shu Uemura Super Mario Bros. Collection Is Not Playing Games

December 21st, 2017 by Karen 4 Comments

When your middle school gaming dreams come true!

Look, ma, all those hours spent playing Super Mario Bros. on Nintendo — the O.G. version, the one before the 64! #datingmyself #nerdalert — were *not* a waste of time (“You should be reading the dictionary instead of playing games, Karen!”), because now I’m one of select few ’80s video game enthusiasts/beauty lovers who totally gets all the references in the Shu Uemura holiday collection.

Holla if you get the references…

See, that’s Mario swimming among the sea creatures in the underwater levels on the Cleansing Oil Shampoo ($57) and Cleansing Oil Conditioner ($58), and on the hair oil, Essence Absolue ($69).

Oh, and the pipe on the hair Master Wax ($39) jar and the brick walls on the lipstick tubes! And the Star Charm dangling from the Lash Curler!

The Tom Ford Winter Soleil Eye and Cheek Palette in 04 Violette Argente

December 21st, 2017 by Karen 5 Comments

Is the purple a shout-out to the new color of the year?

I love how Tom Ford drops a summery collection in winter, because, obvs, the private jet’s waiting to whisk us off to the Maldives ?? for the holidays. *hair flip*

Winter Soleil is his latest LE launch, and it has a blush duo, four roller ball lip oils (so intriguing, I know!), a gardenia-scented body oil spiked with cozy vanilla, a highlighter, a lipstick, and an eye and cheek palette with a peppery, potent purple/vivacious violet.

Hmm… Now that I think about it, the eyeshadows in the $155 Violet Argente Eye and Cheek Palette roll deep with pigment, especially the bronze and the rosy burgundy shades, but the purple sparkles. 🙂 It’s the only one with glitter (dainty glitter, though), and therefore it’s also the one voted Most Likely to Exhibit Fallout (although it doesn’t, and neither do the other shades), and Most Likely to Invite Prince’s Ghost ?? Over for Afternoon Tea and Chitchat.

Maybelline Total Temptation Mascara Is Totally OK

December 19th, 2017 by Karen 12 Comments

maybelline total temptation mascara
Maybelline Total Tempation Mascara ($7.99, coming soon)

This mascara smells like the beach.

Add that to the list of “Things I’d Never Said in 10 Years of Writing About Mascara.”

Somebody out there thought, “What the world needs right now is a mascara that smells like coconuts!”

And it smells really good, BTW. I think so. Maybelline Total Tempation Mascara smells exactly like coconut candy or a coconut-scented sunscreen at a surf shack.

Also, it comes in a pretty pink tube. 🙂

Plus and plus.

maybelline total temptation mascara wand
A closer look at the wand…

It’s the latest mascara from Maybelline. It’s $7.99 and part of their Total Temptation collection that officially arrives next month (although it’s on Amazon right now if you’re itchin’ to have a coconut-scented mascara in your life).

I think it’s A-OK… I don’t think it’s as life-changing as L’Oréal Lash Paradise, which is the current gold standard of dramatic drugstore mascaras for me because it does everything well — lengthen, separate, thicken, holds a lash curl — but Maybelline Total Temptation gets the job done.

maybelline total temptation mascara before after
Before and after Maybelline Total Tempation Mascara

My naturally uninspiring, fairly average lashes look bumped-up a notch or two when I wear a couple coats. They’re longer, thicker and spikier. The formula does gather groups of lashes together, and the spikes are eye-catching, especially from an arm’s length away, but I prefer the extreme separation and tighter curl I get from Lash Paradise.

If you find Total Temptation at the drugstore and pick it up, I don’t think you’ll be bummed out or anything. It’s a perfectly functional, simple, easy-to-remove drugstore mascara that boosts your lash game a little.

Karen

What Does Your Perfect Nude Lip Color Look Like?

December 19th, 2017 by Karen 32 Comments

mac nicki minaj nude lipsticks liners lipglass
I love nude lips and I cannot lie…

One woman’s perfect nude lip color is another woman’s bane of her lip-loving existence. Everyone has a different natural lip color. Is yours a pale pink beige? A deep brown? A pinkish peach? Do your lips have a hint of purple in them?

I gravitate toward warm pinks — or pinks with hint of peach or brown — that fall somewhere in the middle of the nude spectrum. MAC’s pink Subculture Lip Pencil is pretty much my natural lip color.

I’m also a fan of MAC Patisserie Lipstick (also a warm pink) and Hourglass Dreamer Girl Lip Stylo (more of a neutral pink), my current go-to’s at the moment.

How about you? What does your perfect nude lip color look like? Does someone make it now?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Totally unrelated to nude lips, but do you ever drink almond milk? I like to put it in my coffee because sometimes regular milk gives me a tummy ache.

Well, I like to try different brands, and I found a really tasty one at Target by Califia Farms.

I’ve only had the Unsweetened Almond Milk flavor, but it’s smooth and doesn’t have a funky aftertaste. I like how it feels on my tongue, too. It has a thicker consistency, so it’s almost like regular milk.

I’m having it right now in a cup of Folger’s Simply Smooth (which I highly recommend if you ever get a tummy ache from coffee), and all I have to say is YUM!

The Maybelline Total Temptation Shadow + Highlight Palette Is Coco-Nuts for Pigment and Staying Power

December 18th, 2017 by Karen 26 Comments

maybelline total temptation eye cheek palette k2
Wearing the new $14.99 Maybelline Total Temptation Shadow + Highlight Palette on my lids and cheeks

What do you think about a palette that smells like coconuts? Are you intrigued and totally tempted? As a “food enthusiast,” I am, but when I sniff the new $14.99 Maybelline Total Temptation Shadow + Highlight Palette, and I really get my nose up in it, the coconut isn’t nearly as strong as it is in Maybelline’s Total Temptation Mascara, which seems kind of odd to me…

I dunno why, but I just expected the powder products to smell more coco-nutty than the mascara. It’s probably from the years of opening compacts and smelling roses or violets or gardenia or vanilla, or whatever else has been the scent du jour. I’m conditioned.

Or, maybe I’m just hungry and wish these eyeshadows and highlighters smelled like coconut macaroons. 🙂

Part of the Maybelline Total Temptation product family

The list price is $14.99, so it’s a little expensive for drugstore, and it’s part of Maybelline’s new Total Temptation line, which is available on Amazon now (the Amazon price for the palette is $9.49) and coming to drugstores next month.

There are eight powder eyeshadows and two powder highlighters divided into two groups.

One side of the palette has warm browns, peaches and golds, and the other has cool mauve, violet and charcoal shades.
