Paul & Joe’s Spring 2014 Collection Is Bucking for Best Dressed This Spring

January 29th, 2014 by Karen 12 Comments

Paul & Joe Spring 2014

Four pieces from the new 19-piece Paul & Joe spring collection

Oh, Paul & Joe… You certainly know how to woo a girl who loves cute packaging.

The limited edition 19-piece spring 2014 collection recently sprung on Paul & Joe counters and online, and, as one might expect from the line, everything’s cute, cute, cute!

There are eight eyeshadow trios ($35 each), four Eyeshadow Compacts ($10 each), five nail polishes ($16 each), a Face Powder ($45) and one Face Brush ($30).

I wore three of the pieces last weekend to the Marine Mammal Center. A few brief thoughts… (On the pieces. I loved the Mammal Center!)

  • The Face Powder S — A little like Guerlain’s Meteorites Perles! I used it as a highlighter and got a gentle, barely there glow… Smells amazing, too. Like violets.
  • Face Brush — Soft like kittens? Check.
  • Eye Color Trio in My Little Kitty — Mostly glitter. Low in pigment (it’s pretty sheer). It reminds me of the Bobbi Brown glitter shadows. I wore the bronze shade on my lids, the gold in the inner corners and used the dark purply brown as a liner. They lasted on my lids for 12+ hours with primer but migrated into my fine lines and creases. Really pretty, though, for subtle, sparkly looks.
  • Nail Enamel in Petunia — An uber-sheer pink with tiny flecks of glitter in different shapes and sizes, which is cool. I think it’s cute, but a little too subtle for me.

Latest Drugstore Obsession: $7 Maybelline Make Me Pink ColorSensational Lipcolor

January 28th, 2014 by Karen 26 Comments

Maybelline Make Me Pink

Maybelline Make Me Pink

It hasn’t even been three days since the first time I saw it, but I’m already full-on obsessed with Make Me Pink ColorSensational Lipcolor by Maybelline.

Um…it’s only $7! I got it last weekend on my lady date with Marisol when we went to Ulta. She happened to be wearing it when we met for lunch.

I’m so glad I picked it up. It’s full coverage but smooth, and it doesn’t feel heavy on my lips. It’s moisturizing, too.

If you like cooler-toned pinks, give it a whirl. 🙂

My Lady Date Last Weekend, Complete With Ulta Mini Haul

January 27th, 2014 by Karen 15 Comments

Ulta Baked Eyeshadow in Wall Street

The Ulta Baked Eyeshadow Trio in Wall Street ($10)

Going on a combination lunch and makeup date with a friend is one of the best ways to recharge ye olde batteries, I must say.

I mean, you’re combining two amazing things — three, actually — food, friends and makeup. That’s a perfect recipe for battery charging fun, right there.

I went on one last weekend with my buddy Marisol. We started at Sol Food in San Rafael for lunch (I had the shrimp po’ boy and fried plantain chips again), and then, full and happy, headed over to a new Ulta store a couple miles away.

Marisol wanted a tube of Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser, but unfortch, they were sold out (she did end up finding a tube later at Target). I executed a three-piece mini haul with Ulta Baked Eyeshadow Trio in Wall Street, Ulta Lip Crayon in Coral Kiss and Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick in Make Me Pink.

The Maybelline Make Me Pink, I picked up because it was the color Marisol was wearing. I saw it on her lips and thought, “Have to have it!” 🙂

Do you live around here? Have you been to that new Ulta store yet off 101 in San Rafael?

It’s…BIG! And everything’s all shiny and new.

Did you do any makeup shopping at Ulta or anyplace else last weekend? Inquiring minds want to know…

Moisture-Loving Lips Will Love, Love Me Dew: Laura Geller Beauty’s New Love Me Dew Moisturizing Lip Crayons

January 24th, 2014 by Karen 17 Comments

Laura Geller Love Me Dew
Laura Geller Love Me Dew
Love Me Dew, by Laura Geller Beauty

I can’t wait for tomorrow!

Saturday needs to hurry up and start already because I’m going to Ulta to play with makeup. 🙂

So excited, so excited!

My friend Marisol and I have a lunch/makeup date. First, we’re going to Sol Food, that Puerto Rican place I mentioned (gotta get my fried plantain chips!), then to Ulta afterward.

I’m definitely going to check out Laura Geller’s new stuff. I’ve only tried a couple of her things — some baked eyeshadows and these new Love Me Dew Moisturizing Lip Crayons — but I like everything I’ve tried. Her stuff reminds me of LORAC, which is a good thing to be reminded of, ya know? It’s pretty and elegant, with just enough glamour.

If you have dry lips like I do, you might want to try the Love Me Dews. They’re lightweight and light in pigment, but they’re not light at all in moisture.

“A juicy way to love your lips! Infused with vitamin E, Love Me Dew features an ultra-hydrating, conditioning formula with a luxurious balm-like texture. Shiny color wears comfortably – never dry or sticky! This convenient chubby stick never needs sharpening and is perfect for touch-ups on the go.”
— ulta.com

They’re available now for $16 each in six shades — Lychee Glace, Watermelon Cooler, Purple Currant, Dragon Fruit Sorbet, Cranberry Glaze and Plum Freeze — at Ulta stores and online.

I’m Actually Asleep Right Now, and I’m Dreaming About These…

January 24th, 2014 by Karen 19 Comments

I know, I’m talking about food again. Sorry! What can I say? The PMS is raging right now like a culinary maelstrom, and no amount of calories can satiate it.

I would seriously consider trading my tubby tabby for a plate of these plantain chips and some Puerto Rican food right now…

I took these pics during lunch last weekend at Sol Food in San Rafael.

Mmm… Fried plantain chips (with sort of a Thousand Island-ish dipping sauce).

I had a po’ boy sandwich with breaded, fried shrimp. Guhghll… So good.

El Hub had the pollo al horno plate with roasted chicken, beans, rice, a salad with lemon vinaigrette and two fried plantains (one sweet and one garlic).

I may be sleeping right now (it’s 2 a.m. out here in Cali), but I don’t care. I AM SO HUNGRY, DUDE! 🙂

These New $19 DHC Premium Lipsticks Look and Feel Like $50 Lippies

January 22nd, 2014 by Karen 14 Comments

DHC Premium Lipstick GE
DHC Premium Lipstick GE
The new DHC Premium Lipstick GE line…

More makeup morsels from DHC!

Next month the Japanese brand releases a new line of six smooth, creamy lipsticks, like kisses being blown from Japan (mwah!)… They’ll be available here in the States through the company’s catalogue and online through their website at dhccare.com.

The Premium Lipstick GEs, as they’re called, cost $19 each and aim to prettify your pout while simultaneously turning back time…

“Lips look more youthful with Premium Lipstick GE, the latest cosmetic innovation from DHC USA. This brilliantly pigmented lipstick comes in six sophisticated hues and features Pure Color Technology with micronized pigments for a smooth, completely even surface. No clumping, just satiny color with light-diffusing pearls for a c-D plumping effect. Lips get a kiss of emollient moisture from macadamia, olive and rice bran oils. Collagen and sodium hyaluronate help lips hang onto hydration. Oat kernel extract minimizes the look of lines. Vitamin A and germanium encourage revitalization.”
— DHC PR

These smooth, gloriously pigmented products do a helluva job staying out of the vertical lines that grace my lips, and I only need one layer for opaque coverage. My dry lips (it’s flake city, yo!) also appreciate the amount of moisture they contain.

I really like these… Guerlain’s $50 Rouge G’s ain’t got nothin’ on ’em.

Introducing the New DHC Face Color Palettes… How Very Paul & Joe!

January 21st, 2014 by Karen 10 Comments

DHC Face Color Palette EX

The new DHC Face Color Palettes, $20 each

Do you DHC?

It’s a Japanese skincare brand (famous for their bestselling Deep Cleansing Oil).

Next month the brand releases several new makeup products for lips, faces and cheeks.

I’m really feelin’ the new blush duos… There’s something very Paul & Joe about them, don’t you think?

DHC Face Color Palette EX in Glowing Rose
Glowing Rose
DHC Face Color Palette EX in Radiant Ruby
Radiant Ruby

Just use the darker shade to tintify (my word) the apples of your cheeks, followed by the lighter shade to highlight your upper cheekbones. Or, mix both shades together for something completely new. Either way, cheeks get a sheer, natural-looking glow.

If you dig the no-makeup makeup look, these could be right up your alley.

One thing to consider: the three pinkish/rosy shades are quite similar. In fact, I can hardly tell them apart in their pans or on my skin.

The blush duos, which contain sodium hyaluronate, jojoba and olive oils, and hydrating ceramides to help them blend like butter on the skin, are available in four shades — Glowing Rose, Radiant Ruby, Pearly PInk and Sunny Bronze.

If you’re interest is piqued, make a note in your calendar for February 1, which is when they’re available through DHC’s catalog (you can sign up to receive it here), or snag them online at DHCcare.com for $20 each.

Sheer, Why Not? To the New Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow Makeup Collection, Sheer, You May Glow

January 20th, 2014 by Karen 23 Comments

Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow Collection
Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow Collection
Three of the seven pretty pieces in the new Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow makeup collection, available at drugstores now…

OK, so even if rose gold has jumped the shark, and I’m not saying it has, I don’t care. I’m not over it yet, and apparently Physicians Formula isn’t either, because it’s all over their new Nude Wear Nude Glow makeup collection like attitude on cats. 🙂

What’s up with the new Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow collection?

  • How ’bout lingerie? The pieces were designed to feel like luxurious lingerie on the skin.
  • The formula feels as light as a feather, almost like nothing at all, and the finish is practically, except for a gorgeously understated glow, invisible.
  • We are talkin’ sheer! Hence the name, the products have something PF calls “Nude Glow” pigments — translucent pigments, as opposed to traditional opaque pigments, that allow your skin’s natural color and radiance to show through.
  • The seven-piece collection includes the Nude Wear Nude Glow Powders ($14.95 each, and available in Light and Medium); Nude Wear Nude Glow Bronzers ($14.95 each, available in Light Bronzer and Bronzer); Nude Wear Nude Glow Blushes ($12.95 each, available in Rose and Natural); and one Nude Wear Nude Glow ($12.95, available in a single shade, Touch of Glow).
  • All have been added to the Physicians Formula permanent line, and are available now at drugstores, in many grocery stores and also online.

  • I bet this one would look pretty as a highlighter.
  • Hello, sheer! Super sheer! — and totally fool-proof. Perfect if you tend to be heavy-handed with blush.
