Come With Me on My Walk!

August 26th, 2015 by Karen 25 Comments

1-novato-summer-walk

This walk takes about an hour, and we go about three or four miles.

My favorite time to go is about an hour before the sun sets, because that’s primo critter time, also known as “the best time to spot deer,” although the only critters I saw today were a standoffish tuxedo cat and one very handsome quail.

Let’s go!

Novato is a beautiful town right next to Wine Country, and there are lots of fruit trees and interesting plants, like apples and pears and pomegranates, and sometimes they even grow right along the sidewalk.

Technically, these delicious-looking noms belong to other people, so I haven’t picked one yet…but I AM SERIOUSLY TEMPTED TO EVERY TIME.

I don’t know how much longer I can resist…

Restocking Old MAC Faves

August 12th, 2015 by Karen 17 Comments

Doesn’t it seem like the MAC Paint Pots dry out in bunches?

Or does it just seem that way to me? There I’ll be, doopdadoo, going about my business, when I’ll open one of ’em to find it dried out, and then it’s like all of a sudden the rest of them are dried out too!

I dunno. It’s weird…

On the subject of MAC Paint Pots, here are some of my old-school faves I’ve recently restocked…

  • MAC Paint Pot in Layin’ Low (remember this from Fafi?)
  • MAC Paint Pot in Camel Coat
  • MAC Paint Pot in Perky (another Fafi shout-out!)
  • MAC Paint Pot in Constructivist (looks amaze with MAC Costa Riche or Teddy liner)
  • MAC Eye Shadow in Trax

Mostly, I use the Paint Pots as eyeshadow bases, but some of the shades, like Constructivist and Camel Coat, I love, love, LOVE as single washes of color on the lids and lower lash lines. Then just line your eyes with black liner, add mascara and boom! — you’re ready to party with your cat.

Or do whatever else you need to do. 🙂

Oh, and Trax? So old school, man. It was one of the very first MAC eyeshadows I ever bought (so this was about a quadrillion years ago). It’s a golden bronzy purple that — I swear! — looks amaze with Powersurge liner.

Have you restocked any of your makeup faves lately?

Chanel Fall 2015 Collection Les Automnales: Quick Look

August 4th, 2015 by Karen 36 Comments

Chanel Fall 2015 Collection Les Automnales

Hello, warm, brown smokey eyes. 🙂 That’s what I’m thinking about the eyeshadow palette and quad in the new Chanel Fall 2015 Collection Les Automnales.

Normally, I’d already be looking forward to fall — as in the real season — but this summer’s been a mild one for us, and I don’t want it to end.

But I am looking forward to wearing these new pieces from the limited edition Les Automnales collection, which is available now at Chanel counters and chanel.com.

Here are some swatches and pics…

Let’s Glow Crazy! L’Oreal True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator Prime & Highlight in Ice

July 29th, 2015 by Karen 15 Comments

L’Oreal True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator in Ice ($12.99, one of three True Match Lumi shades)

This is the kind of high-beam headlights liquid highlighter I can totally see Beyonce rocking with head-to-toe leather on stage. It’s L’Oreal True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator in Ice ($12.99, one of three shades), and it’s bold, brash and shines so brightly that you can see it from across a room.

My first thought when these came out earlier this summer was, “Hm! Looks like a drugstore dupe of BECCA’s Shimmering Skin Perfectors.” Because they are similar. Both are liquid highlighters for use under your foundation or tinted moisturizer (so the shimmer peeks through your base), or on top of your foundation or tinted moisturizer (so the shimmer’s more obvious), or mixed in with your foundation or other base, and then applied all over yo’ pretty face (for an all-over glow).

It’s available in three shades — Rose (for people with yellow, peach, pink or blue) Golden (for peachy or yellow undertones) and Ice (for pink and blue undertones).

My skin tone is warm (MAC NC42), and I chose to try Ice…partly because I just like the pink color. 🙂

L’Oreal $12.99 True Match Lumi Powder Glow Illuminator: For Highlights So Shiny That They Make Mirrors Quake in Their Shiny Boots

July 28th, 2015 by Karen 18 Comments

L’Oreal True Match Lumi Powder Glow Illuminator ($12.99 each, available in three varieties/shades)

Sooner or later I’ll make through a day without saying the word “strobing” at least once, but today? — totally not that day.

Yes, sweets, these new $13 L’Oreal True Match Lumi Powder Glow Illuminators are all about that high-shine frosty life, and they’re just in time for strobing madness! — the latest craze sweeping the nation.

These three illuminating powders work a little like Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Bricks. Each pan is comprised of four different colors of varying levels of shimmer, glitter and opacity. You swirl ’em together and use the combined mix to highlight specific areas, or your entire face, although I’d be wary of doing the latter, unless your skin is smoother and more perfectly porcelain than a baby’s butt, because the frosty finish seeks out pores and fine lines like a tabby seeks out gravy.

I actually tried it once… I applied one of these all over just for kicks and ended up looking hella sweaty with, like, huge 3D horror movie-sized pores.

Basically, I’m not the biggest fan of frosty highlighters, and I kinda wish that the shimmery effect were subtler, but these could prove useful if you like dramatic frosty effects that shine like high-beam headlights, perhaps for spot highlights on your cheekbones and/or down the bridge of your nose.

They’re available now online and at drugstores, Walgreens and Ulta in Golden for warm skin tones, Ice for cool skin tones, and Rose for neutral skin tones.

Oh! — one last thing. Try not to drop these, because they’ll almost definitely shatter (see the sad pan of Rose?). 🙁

Paul & Joe Moisturizing Foundation Primer S: Helpful Hydration With a Heavenly Scent

July 28th, 2015 by Karen 16 Comments

Paul & Joe Moisturizing Foundation Primer S in 03 Clear ($36)

According to ’80s spelling bee champion/hip-hop group J.J. Fad, the “S” is for super, and the “U” is for unique. The “P” is for perfection, and you know that we are freaks…

It’s that first part — the “S” part for super — that also applies to new $36 Paul & Joe Moisturizing Foundation Primer S, because dang if this stuff doesn’t smell super good!

It’s how I imagine it must be like to open the door to the penthouse suite of the Ritz-Carlton Paris when a cloud of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle mixed with fragrant orange flower shampoo and luxury baby powder wafts out…

Gimme a second because I need to take another sniff, aah! 🙂

New Paul & Joe Pressed Face Powders and Refillable Cases: The Look of Loose Powder From a Lovely Pressed Pan

July 24th, 2015 by Karen 12 Comments

paul joe pressed face powder
The new $10 Paul & Joe Face refillable Powder Case (comes with a powder puff inside), and one of the new $33 Powder Refill pans

Cross my heart, criss-cut fries, grab a husky tabby’s thighs!

Wait — isn’t that how that rhyme goes? I can’t remember…

Never mind! 🙂 What I meant to say is that I SWEAR pressed and loose powders look completely different once I get them on my skin. I used to think they look alike, but after taking roughly a gazillion pics of my mug over the past few years, I’m convinced that my pores usually look smaller, and my makeup less obvious, in the pictures where I’m wearing loose powder instead of pressed. The loose powder works like Instagram’s Valencia filter to smooth and mellow everything out.

Honey, These Delicious New Paul & Joe Lip Treatment Balms Are Da Bomb!

July 23rd, 2015 by Karen 15 Comments

paul joe lip treatment balm

Two of the three new Paul & Joe Lip Treatment Balms ($18 each)

I put one of Paul & Joe’s three new $18 Lip Treatment Balms (which they refer to as “flavors”) on my lips before bed last night, and when Tabs woke me up this morning (and BTW, he’s been biting me lately!), I ended up with cat hair all up in my grill. #catladyproblems

This clear balm is so long-lasting, so thick and so rich that it stays put the ENTIRE evening, all through the night, and lasts so long that you can still feel it on your lips the next morning.

And after plucking all the hair from my lips (why is this tabby so furry?!), my lips looked great and felt fantastically soft, smooth and flake-free.
