MAC Unsung Heroes: Fresh Flare Pro Longwear Eye Shadow

April 30th, 2012 by Karen 7 Comments

mac fresh flare pro longwear eye shadow

I wish I could go back in time to the exact moment I purchased my first green eyeshadow from MAC, the now discontinued MAC Sprout, and hand myself a pan (from the future!) of MAC Fresh Flare Pro Longwear Eye Shadow ($20) instead.

Ah, MAC Sprout… I think I liked the color more than the execution. Gritty and difficult to blend, it was one of the hardest eyeshadows I’ve ever used.

Fresh Flare, on the other hand, an intensely pigmented kelly green with golden undertones, might as well be called a dairy product because it blends like butter on toast. Smooth, super pigmented, easy to blend, and I barely detect any fallout from it at all.

If you’ve been feeling green (in a good way) but don’t know where to start, take a quick look at Fresh Flare.

Mother’s Day Gorgeous Gift Ideas: The Hourglass Vol. 6 Neo-Classic Eye Palette

April 25th, 2012 by Karen 23 Comments

hourglass neo classic palette

I think I’ve only seen my mom wear eyeshadow once, maybe twice in my entire life. She’ll rock her MAC Lychee Luxe Lipglass hard, but eye makeup just isn’t her thing.

Oh, but if it was? I’d give her the Hourglass Vol. 6 Neo-Classic Palette ($58) for Mother’s Day…and then promptly find a way to “borrow” it from her and forget to give it back, haha!

I’d be so tempted to keep it for myself!

A Friday Face of the Day With the New Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadows

April 20th, 2012 by Karen 13 Comments

make up for ever aqua shadow fotd

Dang, it’s hot out here in Nor Cal today! It must be in the low 80s. That, or I’m just not at all used to the warmer weather yet.

To hurry up and get into the spirit of swimming pools and water parks, I thought I’d bust out a few of the new waterproof Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadows ($20 each) for my makeup today.

The Aqua Shadows, which are available now at Sephora, are a new line of long-lasting waterproof eyeshadow crayons. They come in 12 smudge-resistant shades designed to resist fading and creasing just as much as they resist water (more on that in a minute).

Apply, count to five (or 10, to be safe), and then bring on the water!

A few things about the Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadows…

  • Easy does it with these. My lids turn into cake central when I over-apply.
  • From my experience, they live up to the “Aqua” in their name, resisting water like our resident tabby cat. They also last all day long for me, but I do get some creasing when I wear them without an eye primer.
  • They feel drier and thicker than some of the other shadow pencils I’ve tried, like Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eyeshadow Pencils and the NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencils, and take a little more time and effort to blend.

For this look, I also used a few other Make Up For Ever favorites that I recently noticed at Sephora — the Compact Shine On Powder highlighter ($30; comes in two shades), Sculpting Blush ($25; available in four shades) and Mat Bronze bronzing powder ($32; available in two shades).

Is That a Shimmery Plum Mirage? Or Is It the NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Calabria?

April 19th, 2012 by Karen 11 Comments

The day I married El Hub was a pretty great day, but the day I try a new NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil ($24) and can say, “Wow! NARS finally made one of these that lasts all day without fading or creasing!” will rank pretty high up there, too.

These multitasking morsels are creamy makeup triple threats! — rock star chic shadows, primers and eyeliners rolled into one — and NARS likes releasing them in gorgeously luscious shades with a glossy, shiny finish.

Thing is, all of the ones I’ve tried before haven’t lasted long on my lids. They’ll look great for about 20 minutes but then start to crease and fade. It’s a bummer, because I love the colors so much that I keep anticipating every new one in the hopes that one of them, one of these days, will last longer.

Will it be Calabria, the new shimmery plum shade released with the Summer 2012 collection? Will it be THE ONE to finally last all day long on my lids? Ah, the places we’d go together… Trader Joe’s, the movies, Petco — you know, all of the glam spots up here in Novato, LOL!

Let’s find out. 🙂

Have you Met Marie-Galante? She’s the NARS Duo Wearing Sheer, Sparkly Blue and Purple on Her Eyes

April 18th, 2012 by Karen 15 Comments

nars marie galante

If sheer, sparkly shadows aren’t your thing, the new NARS Marie-Galante Eyeshadow Duo probably won’t be your cup of green tea, or if there’s a bumper sticker on your car that reads, “Addicted to pigment,” you may not find a lot to like here.

But if you have a thing for nuanced shades, feast your eyes on this…

nars marie galante

Wait — did she/I just say “nuanced”? Because it looks pretty pigmented in these pans.

Yup, you’re right. It does, but there’s a little more to it than that. The Marie-Galante Eyeshadow Duo is one of my favorite things from the NARS Summer 2012 collection.

On one side, a sheer violet brimming with bits of purple glitter; on the other, a rich, royal blue bursting with blue and purple glitter. The blue shade, the darker of the two, contains a smidgen more pigment than its purple partner, and it flashes on me from blue to purple in the light.

Neat!

The small flecks of glitter in both of these colors spread across my lids like stars on a clear night. Imagine purple and blue versions of NARS Night Star (one of my go-to shades), and you basically get Marie-Galante.

Last week I tried turning up the volume of these colors by layering them on top of the Calabria Soft Touch Shadow Pencil, but then I tried Marie-Galante all by herself.

Love! love

The sheer shadows tint my lids, while the glitter, which goes on evenly and smooth, makes ’em glow, almost like they’re wet. And when the light catches my eyes just right, the darker blue shade looks purple!

nars marie galante

I like patting a layer of the lighter purple all over my lids and applying the darker blue along my upper lash line. Then, for some extra definition after blending both colors together, I line my upper water line with a black eye pencil and my lower water line with a nude liner.

Business lunch, anyone? I like both of these colors because they clearly have some personality, but they’re still reserved enough for work. Let me just do a quick curl with my Shu Uemura lash curler and apply a layer of MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash, and I’ll meet you at the restaurant.

A Golden Shimmer Surrounds Tom Ford’s New Long-Lasting Cream Color for Eyes

April 18th, 2012 by Karen 24 Comments

tom ford guilt cream color for eyes

Tom Ford’s new line of Cream Color for Eyes cream eye shadows are easier on eyes than they are on purses and wallets, but I think the new $40 shadows are all kinds of awesome, especially if you like long-lasting makeup that doesn’t take a lot of fussing.

I’ve been getting to know Guilt and Illicit this week, two of the four limited edition shades, and both colors last all day long on my lids. Guilt, a warm, sheer golden shimmer, contains the finest flecks of gorgeous micro-glitter. And pearly reddish brown Illicit has a similar golden shimmer.

NOTE TO TOM: Please move these (and add more shades!) to the permanent line, because yeah, awesome!

For starters, they sure stick to lids. Both of them, Guilt and Illict, last all day long on my lids with or without an eye primer.

They’re fluffy, like a mousse, and feel wet. And they have a bit of bounce to ’em when I tap the pot with a finger. The consistency reminds me of the YSL Fard Lumière Aquarésistant, which I’ve long liked.

It’s Cool to Be Warm: The NARS Ramatuelle Trio Eyeshadow Is Both Cool and Warm

April 16th, 2012 by Karen 18 Comments

NARS ramatuelle

The new NARS Ramatuelle Trio Eyeshadow ($45) reminds me of the time my neighbor brought jalapeño ice cream to the annual Memorial Day potluck on our street.

At first, all I could say was, “uh…” I mean, spicy and sweet? I pictured those big green peppers…

It just didn’t compute, but then I gave it a try. It was sweet, but it also had a kick that took my breath away. It took a few bites, but I started to like it. Eventually, I even went back for seconds. 🙂

Ramatuelle had a similar effect on me. Like jalapeño ice cream, it features an unexpected combination, except in this case, it’s not a sweet treat and a spicy pepper, but a combination of cool and warm shades.

A limited edition eyeshadow trio released with the new nine-piece NARS Summer 2012 collection, Ramatuelle contains three powder shadows — a warm, matte apricot; a warm, shimmery beige; and a cool, shimmery silver. It’s now the sixth eyeshadow trio available from NARS.

Ready for an Easter Egg? NARS included one to make it easier to keep the color temps straight. If you look closely at the patterns on the pans, the lines in the cool-toned silver shadow run vertically, while the lines in the two warm-toned pans are horizontal.

Isn’t that neat? Just a small touch, but I’m a nerd about details. I love it!

As for the silver shadow, it did seem a little out of place to me at first, but then I remembered the jalapeño ice cream…

One thing I like about NARS is their flair for the unexpected. After I patted a mix of the apricot and beige shadows along my lids and swept the silver along my lower lash lines and at the inner corners of my eyes, the trio made sense! The combination of the cool silver and warmer colors — surprise! — totally works.
