Face of the Day (FOTD)

NARS Daphne and Eye: A Monday Face of the Day

July 19th, 2010 by Karen 62 Comments

We’re almost there. That’s it up ahead — the Monday finish line — and we’re about to cross it together. 🙂

How was your day? Good, I hope.

Mine wasn’t bad as far as Mondays go. I rode my bike for the first time in forever over my lunch break (hello, sore booty!) and had a grand old time experimenting with the new NARS Daphne eyeshadow.

Remember it from the NARS fall 2010 collection? The pretty purple girl?

Oh, she’s quite the charmer… If you like sheer purple matte shadows, beware; she could rock your boat. I took her out for a spin today, and now I’m smitten.

Daphne and Eye: A Monday Face of the Day

The Eyes

The first thing I did was find my flat eyeshadow brush…which turned out to be the hardest part of this look (it was hiding in a purse)! With the brush (a MAC 239), I packed several layers of Daphne on my lids, drawing the color up into the crease. Next, I swept the shimmery golden brown side from the NARS Rajasthan duo, another new product for fall, into the crease and up a bit to the brow bone (I like how the shimmer contrasts with Daphne’s matte finish).

Then, to define the whole eye and tie it all together, I lined the upper lash line with the shimmery dark blue shadow from the same duo (Rajasthan), and lined the lower lash line with Coconut Grove (another eyeshadow from the fall collection).

The Lips and Cheeks

Smokey purple eyes without coordinating cheeks and lips are like Salt without Pepa, or Keith without sweat. To make sure Daphne wouldn’t feel lonely, I brushed NARS Sin blush onto my cheeks and a mix of NARS Strawberry Fields and NARS Greek Holiday lipglosses on my lips (Question: Do you ever wear multiple lipgloss colors?).

MAC In the Groove: A Face of the Day with Stereo Rose Mineralize Skinfinish

July 9th, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

I was chomping at the bit to try MAC Stereo Rose Mineralize Skinfinish today but told myself I had to finish all of my chores first (gah! laundry). Now that I’ve gotten some quality face time with it, all I can say is WOOT! I can see why MAC mavens have been lusting after this shimmery coral blush.

For this look I paired Stereo Rose with icy blue/peachy pink eyes and a peachy pink pout. I got the idea for the eyes from this face chart (the one for On the Scene), one of six MAC made for In the Groove.

Looking kinda senior portait-y, ha ha!

NARS Fall 2010: My Dinner Date Face of the Night/Day

July 8th, 2010 by Karen 32 Comments

Yeah, my tummy just rumbled, but I can’t tell if I’m hungry for food or hungry for more makeup. Some days I swear I derive more sustenance from NARS and MAC (more In The Groove swatches coming soon) than I do from actual edibles, ha!

This afternoon I invited four tidbits from the nine-piece NARS Fall 2010 collection to play with me and the NARS Orgasm/Laguna Blush and Bronzing Duo (NOTE: all seasonal NARS products are rolled into their permanent collection). At the time I didn’t have dinner date makeup in mind, but El Hub just asked me to Thai…and he suggested I call this look my Dinner Date Face of the Night/Day. 🙂

NARS fall 2010 items clockwise from left: Tzarine Duo Eyeshadow, Coconut Grove Singe Eyeshadow, Palladium Soft Touch Shadow Pencil, Strawberry Fields Lip Gloss. NARS Orgasm/Laguna Blush and Bronzing Duo from the permanent line

For the eyes, I layered the shimmery gunmetal gray shadow from the Tzarine Duo on top of the Palladium Soft Touch Shadow Pencil and swept the shimmery beige shadow from Tzarine below my brow bone. Then, I lined my lash and waterlines with Coconut Grove Single Eyeshadow.

MAC Fabulous Felines: A Cat Lady Tribute

June 11th, 2010 by Karen 47 Comments

Remember those March murmurs about a little something called MAC Fabulous Felines? Well, it’s still a few months away (August in the US; September internationally), but after Tabs spotted these fabulous promotional pictures yesterday, he insisted we do a tribute look.

Ya gotta love how Tabs smiles with his eyes. 😉

The look didn’t turn out exactly like the tabby promo pic we used for inspiration, but I ended up liking the smokey gray/brown combo for the eyes.

Smashbox Eye Illusion in Action: Taking a Smokey Purple Eye to the Next Level

June 4th, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

smashbox eye illusion review

Haaay, homeskillet. How goes it? I’m a little stunned that it’s actually Friday. This week flew by so fast, didn’t it? No complaints here, though. 🙂

I’m excited because I have a pre-birthday spa appointment scheduled for tomorrow in which I hope to take/have my very first mud bath. Yup, we’ll see how it goes…whether it turns out to be gross or cool (because there’s a fine line, right?). Wish me luck!

This morning I wanted to experiment a little more with Smashbox’s Eye Illusion.

What is Smashbox Eye Illusion?

It’s a compact with a trio of sheer, iridescent eyeshadows in blue, gold and pink. When layered on top of other eyeshadows and liners, the colors alter the original hues and impart a subtle sheen/shine. Price: $28.

Today I gave it a try with what would have been a plain jane daytime smokey purple eye, shooting for something a little more exciting and special.

I started by priming my lids with a base of Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden (a matte nude), following it up with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Rockstar (a deep plummy purple) applied to the waterlines, lid and just barely into the crease.

Where’s the waterline?

The waterline is the small 2mm (or thereabouts) strip of skin that extends from where the eyelashes sprout from the eyelid toward the eye itself, and it exists on both the top and bottom eyelids.

Then, with the MAC 217 (or any other fluffy domed eyeshadow brush), I smudged out the edges, drawing the liner into the crease and feathering out in a gradient of color.

MAC To The Beach: A Bit of Blue for a Rainy Spring Day

May 17th, 2010 by Karen 63 Comments

mac to the beach

Well, ladies, spring was allegedly on the menu until these storm clouds blew into town…

Come on, Mother Nature, what’s the deal? Where are my 80-degree days? I want hotness, so I can read my gossip mags while I sip iced tea by a swimming pool and daydream about MAC To The Beach. 🙂

MAC To The Beach Makeup Look Featuring a Bit of Blue for a Rainy Spring Day

Today I’m wearing my new “I’m living in complete denial about the weather” makeup look, which features gold, peach, coral, blue and bronze.

Even though it still makes use of some of the brighter colors from the MAC To The Beach collection (among other things like these and this), I think it’s a little daytime-friendlier than the orange and green liner look I tried last weekend.

If you decide to give this or something similar a try, please share any suggestions for duplicate or similar products you discover. Substitutions are ALWAYS welcome (a girl’s gotta have options!). 🙂

Grab your board, girl, and let’s ditch this rain! You know where we’re headed…

MAC To The Beach: My Summery Saturday Face of the Day

May 15th, 2010 by Karen 25 Comments

mac to the beach

Hola, ladies. 🙂 Have you heard Katy Perry’s California Gurls? It put me in the mood for my makeup today, a summery look using products from MAC To The Beach. It’s a coral and green eye with a bright orangey bronze cheek and glossy orange lips, loosely based on the MAC promo picture from the collection.

Blues and Greens with MAC Art Supplies and MAC Trip

March 25th, 2010 by Karen 52 Comments

Howzit, holmes? Hasn’t this felt like a long week? I woke up this morning feeling very (see picture above).

Because a little color always helps, I reached for the MAC Trip Cool Eyes Palette and a few things from MAC Art Supplies, as well as Benefit’s permanent collection and a Lancome mascara.

In a little while I was feeling 100% better and kinda like this…
