5 Days of Chanel Rouge Coco: There’s Something About Perle

February 24th, 2010 by Karen 84 Comments

Momma always said, “You can’t go wrong with pearls.” Okay, well, maybe she didn’t say that, but I totally think she should’ve because I loves me some pearls. 🙂

Classic, timeless, and they go with practically everything — kinda like Chanel’s new Rouge Coco lipstick ($30) in Perle 02.

She’s not as outgoing as her sister, La Pausa, but Perle’s soft glow still earns her lots of looks.

5 Days of Chanel Rouge Coco: Hot Summer Fun with La Pausa

February 23rd, 2010 by Karen 98 Comments

Pack your bags, ladies! It’s time for some fun in the sun. 🙂 Bring your sexiest summer dress, a swimsuit and sandals because today’s virtual vacay begins with Chanel’s Rouge Coco lipstick in La Pausa 08.

A sexy, summery coral with a hint of golden shimmer (same smooth texture as Mademoiselle), she enjoys chilling at beach bars and relaxing on the sand beneath an umbrella with a fruity drink.

I can see us now…

“Girl, is that Ryan Reynolds?”

“Hawt damn, I think he’s shirtless…”

5 Days of Chanel Rouge Coco: Bonjour, Mademoiselle!

February 22nd, 2010 by Karen 111 Comments

With Rouge Coco, Chanel begins a new chapter in their storied book of makeup and beauty. The new flagship lipsticks launch this week, 🙂 and to herald their arrival I’m planning some looks that feature colors from the collection.

Fo’ sheezy, I fell in love the moment I saw today’s color, Mademoiselle 05, aka the creamy, rosy pink Vanessa Paradis (Johnny Depp’s baby mama) wears in the Chanel Rouge Coco ads.

Mademoiselle’s hydrating formula glides across my lips, leaving them soft AND moisturized.

Oh, and the pigmentation?

Feeling Soft Blue and Purple: My Dior Lace Thursday Face of the Day

January 21st, 2010 by Karen 49 Comments

Well, I decided to take the Dior Lace Dentelle Palette in Pearl Glow for a little spin tonight.

Without a particular look in mind before starting, I just grabbed the pan of shimmery blue, purple, pink, taupe and silver and let my fingers make up my mind for me. 🙂

Dentelle AFTER it’s been swatched

By the time I was finished, I’d used a mix of products from Dior, Urban Decay and MAC, ending up with a soft, sorta watercolor effect with a faint wash of blue and purple on my eyes, a light pinkish brown matte on my cheeks and a creamy pinkish/plum lip.

On my eyes, I used the Dior Dentelle Palette in Pearl Glow, Dior 2-Colour Eyeshadow in Nude Look, Dior Extase Mascara and the Urban Decay 24-7 Glide On Eye Pencils in Zero and Ransom.

To tone down my cheeks (because I didn’t want them to overpower my eyes), I used MAC’s Personal Style, a sheer powder blush from the recent All Ages, All Races, All Sexes collection.

A Face of the Day with NARS Habanera

December 23rd, 2009 by Karen 22 Comments

I guess it’s true — you can take the girl out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the girl! Even here in the tropics beneath a canopy of banyan and coconut trees (we’re just a few miles away from where they film Lost, FO’ reals!), I can’t stop myself from thinking about San Francisco…

As a matter of fact, the colors I used for my makeup today, with products from the NARS Habanera Duo ($32), are making me think of the City by the Bay.

nars-habanera-swatch

Habanera, a powder duo belonging to NARS’ permanent line, has a gorgeous shimmery slate blue on one side (color reminds me of a wet and foggy San Francisco morning). The other side houses a deep plummy purple with tiny flecks of slate blue glitter that shimmer like the city from across Bay at dusk.

At first glance, I wasn’t sure I’d like the way Habenera would look on me. I’d seen and loved the shades on lighter-skinned beauties but was afraid they’d look a little too light and cool on me (as shimmery pastels can sometimes look quite frosty on darker skin tones).

I think I worried for nothing, though. I get the feeling that women of a wide range of skin tones are going to like the way Habanera looks on them. 🙂 It’s a color that I’m guessing a lot of women can wear.

If you’re curious about Habanera, I hope you give it a try. Today I was in the mood for something light and fun, so I went with a wide-eyed, shimmery pale blue and plum eye look with long lashes, a sheer plum cheek and a neutral lip.

Holiday Party Makeup: The Holiday Cocktail Party or Mixer

December 11th, 2009 by Karen 24 Comments

Ah, ladies. Aren’t you glad it’s Friday? 🙂 TGIF! Today, since we’re getting down to the Christmas wire and the social season’s in full effect, I thought I’d try a makeup look with a little more pizazz than my earlier ideas for office parties and small get-togethers with friends.

It hit me while thumbing through the small look book that comes with Urban Decay’s Book of Shadows Volume II palette. There’s a shot of a sultry smokey eye that practically jumps right off the page!

Admiring Studying the picture for a moment, what stood out to me were the blending and colorful shimmer.

Holiday Party Makeup: A Casual Get-Together with Friends

December 9th, 2009 by Karen 47 Comments

holiday party makeup tips

Not being able to concentrate worth a biscuit today, I decided to skip work and play with looks for an upcoming get-together with two of my girlfriends this Saturday.

They were bridesmaids in my wedding, and they’re coming over in the morning for brunch (I think they really just want to hang out with Tabs). 🙂

It’ll be a casual weekend thang, so maybe something light and sparkly…

This cool-toned look uses products from the Clarins Palazzo D’Oro collection.

Just like Monday’s potential office party look, this look’s pretty conservative, relying on cool browns, pinks and golds for the eyes, lips and cheeks.

To go with their collection, the holiday elves at Clarins posted four nifty eye maps.

I chose the “Festive Evening Look” because of how subtle I think the colors look on my skin tone. I’m sure lighter lovelies could also rock it for daytime but might try using a light touch during application.

Holiday Party Makeup: The Office Party

December 7th, 2009 by Karen 98 Comments

holiday party makeup

It’s time to put aside those unfinished TPS reports, ladies (they can wait), and reach for the eggnog, because the office holiday party season has officially begun!

Your coworkers might be dancing on tables and acting in ways they normally never would (haaaaay!), but most work parties still call for slightly sophisticated makeup and party attire.

Makeup-wise, that often means classic neutrals (but that doesn’t have to mean boring).

This year, I’m going to El Hub’s office party with his coworkers, and today I started brainstorming my look with tidbits from the eight-piece Prescriptives Lustre Holiday Collection.

It’s a subtle, understated look with bronze, gold and pink that’s pretty enough to get the attention of coworkers without stepping over “that” line.
