A Quick Intro to the Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief Collection

December 5th, 2017 by Karen 9 Comments

origins mega mushroom
Three moisturizing mega mushroom products from Origins

Shitaki, portabello, crimini — GIRL, can we just talk about my favorite mushrooms for a minute? (My favorite ones to eat.) I’ve got a small box of organic criminis waiting to be added to an omelet for lunch, yum!

None of these mushrooms have anything to do with the Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief line…but maybe that’s a good thing, because if they did we’d be here talking about truffles (mmm, truffle mac and cheese) for days.

The Mega-Mushroom line

The Origins Mega-Mushroom line is a collection of cleansers ($31 each), a toner ($34), serums ($48-73) and moisturizers ($66 each) for sensitive, dry and red, irritated skin, and, if you’re curious, no, they do not smell like mushrooms.

Essential oils

The three products I tried (the Face Cleanser, Micellar Cleanser and Soothing Treatment Lotion, which is basically a toner) smell lightly of lavender, which I guess isn’t a surprise, since lavender oil is one of the ingredients, along with other essential oils, like orange and patchouli (FYI, I’ve listed the ingredients of the products I’ve tested at the bottom of this post).

Reishi mushroom

The star ingredient, though, is a mushroom called reishi, or lingzhi mushroom, which is used in traditional Chinese medicine for healing and longevity, and it’s supposed to soothe red, sensitive skin.

I know this because Origins has this kick-@ss plant finder for all of the botanical ingredients in their products on their website.

The last time they revamped their packaging, they also revamped their entire approach to the line. Now they place plant-based ingredients front and center, kinda like Aveda does, and they list all of their ingredient on the website, which is SO helpful. It lets you get to know their products on a deeper, more practical level.

So, who’s this Dr. Weil dude, anyway?
He’s an author and celebrity doctor known for championing a healthy lifestyle and alternative medicine, and he donates the profits from the line to the non-profit Weil Foundation, which promotes integrative medicine, or the combination of alternative medical treatments alongside conventional medicine.

Moisturizing

I haven’t had any sensitive, red patches lately (knock on wood), so I can’t assess how well these work to reduce redness and sensitivity, but after steadily using them for three weeks, I can say that my combo dry/oily face is content with the high level of hydration, and the products haven’t triggered any breakouts yet.

The Kevyn Aucoin Neo Trio Palette

December 5th, 2017 by Karen 9 Comments

Fresh, effortless cheek color and dimension from the Kevyn Aucoin Neo Trio Palette

There’s something about magnets, man. I like stuff that sticks together, like the Fenty Beauty sticks and these Kevyn Aucoin powders in the $58 limited edition Neo Trio Palette on counters meow.

You can stick them together and take them apart like puzzle pieces, which is totally my thing (El Hub is not into puzzles at all, which is crazy to me)!

Each of the three pans in the Neo Trio Palette contain 0.25 ounces of product; one full-size pan from KA’s permanent line is 0.75 ounces, so you get a good amount of product.

MAC Robert Lee Morris Powder Blush

December 1st, 2017 by Karen 18 Comments

MAC Robert Lee Morris Powder Blushes from the top in Peach, Linda and Rhubarb ($39 each)

Besides the fact that they’re softer and silkier than your average MAC Powder Blush and fantastically flattering with bronze and orange-y brown eyeshadows (must be the warm peachy tones), the MAC Robert Lee Morris Powder Blushes, which are $39 each and available in three shades, also kinda look like dragons eggs!

I hope one of them hatches so I can fly to Starbucks this morning and get a toasty beverage off into battle and save Jon Snow. #GameofThronesReference

Urban Decay All Nighter Waterproof Full-Coverage Concealer: Available Now in the UD Permanent Line

November 21st, 2017 by Karen 16 Comments

urban decay all nighter waterproof full coverage concealer
Get ready to go matte all night (or, in my case, all day!) long with Urban Decay’s new All Nighter Waterproof Full-Coverage Concealer.

Don’t go chasing waterfalls… That’s what I’m telling you, but if you’re going to do it anyway (despite TLC’s multiple warnings!), know that you can stand underneath one wearing Urban Decay’s new concealer, and your makeup would emerge completely intact.

It’s waterproof to the extreme, so keep your fave oil-based makeup remover handy, because you’ll need it to take this concealer off your face.

14 shades, $29 each, extremely waterproof!

Extremely matte, extremely waterproof

A new addition to the UD permanent fam, All Nighter is a long-wearing, high-coverage liquid concealer available in 14 shades ($29 each).

They have a… I want to call it an ultra-matte finish, because they’re SO matte that they don’t reflect any light whatsoever on the skin, which makes them easier for me, as a woman in my 40s, to wear on my cheeks, nose, mouth, chin and forehead, but not so easy to wear under my eyes.

For some reason, matte concealers, especially the flat mattes like these, age me. I dunno, but I swear they make my fine lines look more obvious (whereas dewy/reflective concealers like Make Up For Ever’s HD and MAC Matchmaster make my under-eye area look plumper and more youthful).

urban decay all nighter waterproof full coverage concealer
I’m wearing a mix of Medium Light Warm and Medium Dark Warm under my eyes in the after pic. On the rest of my face, I’m wearing Medium Dark Warm as a foundation — no powder. Just the concealer.

Awesome for everywhere except under my eyes

If you’re 30+, I wouldn’t recommend All Nighter as an under-eye concealer, but it’s boss for everything else on your face because it covers up everything (it’s also way more pigmented than UD’s Naked Skin concealer).

It hides freckles, discoloration, redness… All Nighter handles it all, and it’ll do it all night long, even if you go for an impromptu swim at midnight (it happens). It’s waterproof and long lasting.

MAC Unsung Heroes: MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation

November 2nd, 2017 by Karen 17 Comments

I’ve had a love affair with this foundation for almost 10 years now.

Chances are, if we bumped into each other at — UGH! — The X in San Francisco in the late ’90s or early aughts (it was a place Jen and I used to go clubbing, and in retrospect it was pretty gross), I was wearing MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation ($29) on my face and partying all night long.

Studio Fix Fluid is one of those foundations that you can put on your face, and you know that no matter what you’re doing — dancing, sweating, making out with strangers (um, not that I did that), dancing in cages (not that I did that either!) — you know, that Studio Fix will keep going and going and going and going.

Wearing Studio Fix in NC42, set with MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Golden

A medium-coverage matte liquid foundation, Studio Fix is one of my two all-time fave MAC foundations (the other one is Face and Body). You can easily ramp up the coverage to full by using additional layers, but I wouldn’t use more than two or three, because you can completely mask red areas and pigmentation spots with just two layers, I’m not kidding, and if you go beyond three, it starts to look cake face-y.

Of all the MAC liquid foundations, I think Studio Fix is the best at controlling oil. It sucks it all up! I can really tell when I’m looking between my eyebrows, which is the oiliest area on my face. I don’t see any shiny spots there when I use Studio Fix. It completely obliterates oil without drying out my combo skin.

What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.

It’s also extremely long-wearing. Like, my club days are so far behind me, so I’m not wearing Studio Fix all night long anymore, LOL! I do wear it all day long now, though, and I know that I can wake up at the crack of dawn, put this on, and when I take off my makeup at night, my foundation will look just as fresh as it did that morning.

Farsali Jelly Beam Illuminator Applies Like Jelly and Sets Like a Powder

October 25th, 2017 by Karen 6 Comments

farsali jelly beam
(Jelly) Beam me up!

You can go from mere mortal to full-on unicorn in about 2.5 seconds — or maybe even one second! — with Farsali’s Jelly Beam Illuminator ($40). Farsali is an indie brand best known for their shimmery skin serums and elixirs, and Jelly Beam (it’s a highlighter), which launches November 1st online, is their first official foray into the world of makeup.

farsali jelly beam closeup
I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly…

Jelly Beam is galloping atop (!) the trend of bold, shiny metallic highlights, with the key difference between this one and every other shimmery gold out there is the jelly texture, which feels like silky whipped cream (so it’s not runny). It’s so cool! It kinda looks like cake batter or jiggly scrambled eggs just before they set.

Remember the MAC Big Bounce shadows a few years ago? Jelly has the same texture.

farsali jelly beam swatch
You’re so golden.

Pat and/or blend the golden jelly on your skin, give it about 30 seconds to dry to a powder, and Honey, that wet-satin highlight won’t budge for nothing.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

BECCA Après Ski Glow Face Palette for Holiday 2017

BECCA Eye Lights Palette on my eyes and NARS Vibeke Lipstick

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — I am not a snow person.

I mean, I like hanging out in the lodge by the fire with a glass of wine on a bearskin rug after snowboarding… You get back to the cabin after a day on the slopes, have some hot cocoa and snacks. That’s cool, right? And then, like, your skin looks all glowy, like you’re wearing the BECCA Après Ski Glow Collection Face Palette ($45), because you’ve been exerting yourself on the slopes.

BECCA sure knows how to handle seamless integrations, ya know? When I wear their products, I can’t tell where my bronzer stops and my blush begins, and that also goes for their highlighters. Their products melt into each other without leaving any harsh lines. Their Shimmering Skin Perfectors basically blend like you’re frosting a cake.

NARS Man Ray for NARS Holiday 2017: Overexposed Glow Highlighter in Double Take

October 6th, 2017 by Karen 6 Comments

nars double take
Overexposed Glow Highlighter in Double Take, $42

Wha-wha!? Double take! I had to do a faux one when I saw NARS Double Take up close for the first time. It’s the new highlighter in the NARS Man Ray Holiday 2017 color collection.

I mean, look at the pan. There are lips on it…but it’s a cheek product? It’s a little confusing, but dang if it isn’t pretty, so I’m just going to let myself be confused and go with it, LOL! Heck, I still might even put it on my lips sometime to see what happens…

The limited edition warm golden formula feels super soft and dense — a little like the MAC In Extra Dimension powders, only finer and creamier. When I flick a brush across it, the powder particles cling to the bristles and don’t go flying everywhere.

Ooh, shimmery golden purr-fection…
