The Legend of Zella and the Quest for the Gathered Tote

November 26th, 2012 by Karen 24 Comments

The Zella Gathered Tote

Gather ’round the campfire, girls, and lend me your ears. The tale you’re about to hear is no meager yarn or fable, no children’s fairytale. No, it’s one of the greatest adventure stories of the modern era and antiquity. Why? Because it’s true! — as true as the North Star!

Sit close, steel your nerves, and open your mind. Behold! Now begins the Legend of Zella and the Quest for the Gathered Tote…

CHAPTER ONE

Once upon a time (around 2007), in a place far, far away, there lived a pint-sized beauty lover named Karen.

Despite her best intentions, every time Karen left the house, she brought along everything but the kitchen sink.

Along with her regular cat lady accoutrements — her wallet, phone, keys, snacks, cat treats, 12 tubes of gloss, a pair of backup shoes, a spare bra (because you never know…) and extra socks — she also brought her cameras, lenses and laptop with her a lot of the time.

The villagers in her small town didn’t understand. “Dude,” they’d whisper to one another and point as she passed, “what’s that chick’s deal? Why does she need three bags? Who carries that much stuff?”

“I don’t know,” another would say. “I heard that she keeps a cat in one of them and a fully cooked turkey in the other!”

Then, one day, everything changed. Karen discovered the $68 Zella Gathered Tote at a local merchant’s shoppe, also known as Nordstrom (it’s also online at nordstrom.com).

Right away, Karen saw its potential. “Hmm…” she wondered. “Although technically a gym bag, this thing will serve me well. It’s slim-fitting and deep, yet still lightweight. It’s also big enough for a laptop, two cameras, a medium-sized travel makeup bag and my gym clothes. Or, I could just use it as a casual tote, or maybe even a diaper bag someday.

“I don’t think El Hub would mind carrying it, either, because it’s black and not too girly at all.”

Karen slung the main strap across her body and happily skipped all the way home; she also delighted in the knowledge that she could have carried it by the padded, comfy double handles as well.

Change Your Pants, Change Your Life: Slip Into a Pair of Comfy, Kitty Model-Approved KUT from the Kloth Diana Skinny Corduroy Pants

November 8th, 2012 by Karen 32 Comments

Wearing the Diana Skinny Corduroy Pants by KUT from the Kloth

FACT: the time has finally come to officially take out cold weather clothes here in the Bay Area.

FACT: international kitty models will always out-pose you, no matter how hard you try.

WERK!

FACT: the KUT from the Kloth Diana Skinny Corduroy pants I’m wearing today could possibly be the best damn pair of corduroy pants on the planet. Maybe even the universe…assuming the aliens out there actually wear pants (most of the aliens I see in movies like to go au naturel).

Sometimes I squirm when companies ironically spell “C” words with a “K” (because using a “K” automatically makes something “Klassy,” like having a grilled cheese sandwich with a glass of red wine…which I was THIS CLOSE to doing last night, not gonna lie), but it seems totally appropriate in this case (kase?).

Pants, to borrow a phrase from that old-school Run-D.M.C. song, can be tricky. Unless you’re genetically blessed with perfect proportions, it can be really difficult to find a pair that fits. Most of the ones I try on are a little off in one way or another. They’re either too long, falling off my butt or making my muffin top look even more…muffiny. 🙂

But these are perfect! They embrace my curves without bear hugging ’em.

At $70, they’re a little pricey, but they’re so well made that I want to wear them every single day of the week.

Why these pants?

  • So comfy! They’re like the Pajama Jeans of corduroy pants! The material (98% cotton and 2% spandex) has just the right amount of give to it (so I can eat that extra scoop of mashed potatoes), but it’s not so elastic that it’s all stretched out by the middle of the day. Oh, and the corduroy feels as soft as my tubby tabby’s tum. 🙂
  • A forgiving fit. I usually find something that bugs me about most pairs of pants (I’m short with long legs and a short torso!), but these are just so forgiving and easy to wear. They have a mid-rise that sits up pretty high on my waist, covering my muffin top, and my bum doesn’t hang out when I’m bending or kneeling. I also don’t have to constantly hike them up or keep adjusting.
  • Quality construction. I’ve had mine for about a year, and they’ve held up really well. This is some sturdy corduroy here, and I haven’t had any problems with holes or unraveling seams. The color also looks as rich as ever.

I brought them home in basic black because I wanted something I could wear with lots of different tops and sweaters, but they come in some other colors, too, like this here hot pink…

The price is on the steep side for a pair of pants, but compared to higher-end skinnies, which often go for $200 a pop (crazy!), $70 doesn’t seem too bad…

If you’re interested, stalk the Nordstrom site, because I do see these on sale every once in a while (that’s how I found them last year).

Outfit of the Day, Vol. 12: Ankle Boots and a BCBG Dress

September 14th, 2012 by Karen 41 Comments

outfit of the day bcbg dress

No fear!

Well at least that’s my plan for the rest of 2012.

I’m gonna try to keep an open mind, for things both big and small, with “try” being the operative word.

Like with my outfit today and pairing ankle boots with a dress.

“Ankle boots with a dress…?”

Yeah, that’s what I said, but I thought the best way to see if I’d like it was to give it a try.

Right now this BCBG dress is one of my favorite things in my closet. It’s super comfy, like a stretchy pants equivalent of a dress, but it’s machine washable and doesn’t need ironing (YES!), saving time and money on dry cleaning.

BCBG actually has a ton of everyday dresses that you can just throw in the wash. That’s so cool! Some of their stuff can be quite pricey, though, so I’ve always got my eyes peeled for sales. I found this dress early this summer on deep discount at Haute Look for 50% off.

Outfit of the Day: A Fitted French Connection Banded Cap Sleeve Minidress for a Special Night Out

July 6th, 2012 by Karen 65 Comments

french connection banded cap sleeve minidress

LOL! No, I’m not rolling out to Trader Joe’s dressed like this. 🙂 Tomorrow I’m going out to dinner with El Hub for our sixth wedding anniversary, and I’m trying to figure out what to wear.

I’m thinking it would be a good time to finally take my birthday dress out for a spin, the French Connection Banded Cap Sleeve Minidress in Grey Steel I scored on deep discount at Nordstrom last month.

One of the reasons I like the dress is because it’s similar to this $780 (!) Herve Leger, which is way, way out of my budget.

The French Connection version regularly goes for about $180 — still a lot — but if you can snag it on sale like I did…

Wait — you can! It’s on sale right now at both nordstrom.com and frenchconnection.com.

Outfit of the Day, Vol. 11: Preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse With BCBG

June 13th, 2012 by Karen 21 Comments

bcbg dress outfit of the day

Oh, hey. Um… How’s it going?

Me? What am I doing? Oh, I’m just working on my zombie look… Yeah, practicing for the big day. Wanna look my best for Z Day, ya know?

I mean, I don’t plan to be turned into a zombie (after all, who would look after Tabs?), but no one ever does, right? It still happens, and if/when it does, I want to look cute.

What do you think of this BCBG dress? Does it say to you, “Now there’s a sharp-looking zombie”?

bcbg dress outfit of the day

I got the idea for it from this new book I’m reading called Warm Bodies, by Isaac Marion.

Three words: zombie love story. love

I know! What a killer idea (pun intended).

The official trailer for the book

The story’s told from the perspective of a zombie named “R.”

R falls in love with Julie, a human, after eating Julie’s boyfriend’s brain and absorbing his memories. Obviously. 🙂 But like in all good love stories, things get a little complicated after that…

Which brings me to my outfit today!

You know how zombies are usually stuck wearing the same outfit forever? Could be a real drag, right?

I wouldn’t want to be wearing a light solid-color dress, because it would show every gore stain, and as much as I love stretchy pants, they aren’t the first outfit that comes to mind when I think, “zombie couture.”

Desperately Seeking Shoes! A DSW Neon/Nude Shoe Adventure

June 11th, 2012 by Karen 21 Comments

desperately seeking shoes

So. Jury duty. Moments before anarchy erupted in the jury selection room, the judge, perhaps sensing a rebellion on his/her hands, excused everyone and sent us home.

Tempers quickly cooled… My fellow mutineers and I set down the folding chairs we were about to start throwing at one another and filed out of the room in a calm and orderly fashion.

Disaster averted. For now. But it was yet another reminder of the precariousness of our so-called civilization. If/when the zombie apocalypse occurs, we are so screwed.

Anywho! 🙂 After my brush with disaster, I felt like I needed something to restore my faith in humanity, so naturally I stopped at DSW on my way home.

I thought I might get myself a pair of neon shoes to start year 37 on a bright note, but after trying on this pair of Guess Alcott pumps in Yellow ($59), now I’m not so sure…

Guess Yellow Shoes

They’re just so bright! And, I don’t know, maybe a little too much shoe for me.

Oh! — do you remember those BCBG Platforms I’d been lusting after? Well, they were there at the store today on sale for $59.

Thing is, they only had this mint shade, and not the neon lime green one that originally caught my eye…

bcbg mint

I still tried ’em on and thought they were pretty comfortable for the height, but definitely not comfort shoes. The heel felt stable, and nothing pinched or felt too tight, but I’m still trying to stick to my rule of only getting shoes I can comfortably walk in, so I set them down and turned the corner…

…and bumped right into these super cute hot pink neon/nude pumps by Steve Madden ($59)!

steve madden p carli
Steve Madden Carli Pump, $59

Cute! But far from practical. The leather felt tough and tight, and I almost toppled over when I tried a Miss J catwalk turn.

The nude part reminded me of the shoes Reese Witherspoon wears in This Means War. Through most of the movie, Reese wears nude pumps or sandals that really seemed to make her look taller.

Since I’m always looking for ways to enhance my vertical stature, I thought the trick might also work for me, so I started scanning the aisles for cute nude sandals and pumps…

I loved the gold tough girl accents, but the zipper in the back made ’em difficult to just slip on and off.

Outfit of the Day, Vol. 11: Current/Elliott Crazy Pants

June 7th, 2012 by Karen 34 Comments

current elliott ankle skinny jeans in canvas

Full shot of the crazy pants! — a.k.a. the Skinny Ankle Jean in Canvas Boa.

They’re by Current/Elliott, and just like a real boa constrictor’s belly, they stretch.

That’s my favorite thing about ’em. They’re stretchy, and very forgiving when I’m feeling bloated…or when I’ve “accidentally” partaken of one too many free cheesecake samples at the Tuesday night farmers’ market, whoops!

But even though they’re stretchy, they don’t stretch out so much that they’re hanging off my butt by the end of the day.

Score! 🙂

I found this pair on sale last month at Hautelook. They’re not on sale there right now, but I did see them (unfortunately, full price) at Revolve Clothing and Bergdorf Goodman.

SINCE THE PATTERN IS KINDA LOUD, I usually try to keep the rest of the outfit simple, like with a loose-fitting white tee. This one’s by Caslon, the Nordstrom house brand, and here’s another one that’s similar.

Here I’m also wearing the shirt with a gray Band Oh underneath, and for accessories, a stack of silver bracelets/bangles and a pair of black platforms/sandals.

Outfit of the Day, Vol. 10: Adding a Little Extra Something to Jeans and a White Tee

May 13th, 2012 by Karen 10 Comments

outfit of the day volume 10

Just because you’re rockin’ jeans and a white t-shirt doesn’t mean your outfit has to be boring. 🙂

With some minor adjustments, an outfit of everyday basics can still look pretty polished and chic.

For brunch today, I started with a standard white tee (this one’s theme appropriate) and my favorite pair of jeans, but instead of just slipping on some flip-flops and calling it a day, I dressed it up a bit with some silver hoop earrings, a white bracelet, a big bag and a pair of neutral snakeskin print heels.

Then I went to town on a huge stack of mixed berry pancakes!
