$6 Goody Spin Pins: It’s a Goody Thing I Took These Pins for a Spin

September 29th, 2010 by Karen 82 Comments

goody spin pin review

Goody Spin Pins ($6), ohmahgawd, they’re awesome. I brought a pair with me on my trip last weekend based on your recommendations, so thank you — you were so right!

They’re basically these beefed up, coiled metal bobby pin-like doohickies (two per pack) for securing your hair into a bun; Goody says each one does the work of 20 bobbies (no, not the ones in law enforcement), and they come in two shades, one for lighter hair and one for darker. Each pack comes with two pins.

Most of the time my long hair’s a big pain in the @ss. In the time it takes me to do a bun, inserting the 30 or so bobby pins it takes, people all around the world are accomplishing epic things. They’re writing novels, learning how to drive a stick, circumnavigating the globe — seriously, bobby buns take me a really long time.

The prospect of putting my hair up with just two pins kinda boggled my mind, but these suckers really work! I don’t know how (well, I could probably figure it out), but they do.

First, you take your hair, pull it back, and wrap it into a really tight bun. Then, you tuck in the ends and screw in the first pin at the top. The second pin goes in through the bottom of the bun, locking it in place. That’s it! Through some miracle of magic or science, your bun’s done!

Jon Hamm: His Best Hair?

September 11th, 2010 by Karen 12 Comments

jon hamm hair poll picture

Every week it gets harder and harder to sympathize with Don Draper, Mad Men’s most eligible self-loathing bachelor (seriously, Don, forgetting to pick up your kids? Not cool!), but I gotta say, Jon Hamm, the actor who plays Don, sure is easy on the eyes.

Born March 19, 1971 in St. Louis, Missouri, Jonathan Daniel Hamm started acting in high school, ironically playing Judas in the musical, Godspell. Where he found the time for acting (he was also on the football, baseball and swim teams) is a mystery, but it’s a good thing he did.

After college, but before moving to Los Angeles in 1996 to pursue an acting career, Jon returned to his high school in Missouri to teach drama (one of his students was a young Ellie Kemper, now an actress on The Office).

But that didn’t last long. He still had the acting bug, so he left Missouri and moved to Tinseltown.

Stardom didn’t come quick, though. He waited tables, getting occasional work on TV shows until his big break came in 2007.

Hello, Don! 🙂

Kate Winslet: Her Best Hair?

Kate Winslet: Her Best Hair?

James Cameron’s historic disaster movie isn’t what turned England’s Kate Elizabeth Winslet (born October 5, 1975) into a titanic success, but it probably didn’t hurt. The English actress and occasional singer, the youngest person to garner six Academy Award nominations, has been acclaimed for both dramatic and comedic performances, in productions ranging from period to contemporary, and from major Hollywood blockbusters to less publicized indie films.

Since a busy 2008 (Revolutionary Road and The Reader, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress), Kate has been keeping a low profile, but she comes storming back in 2011, starring opposite Matt Damon, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard and Gwyneth Paltrow in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming action-thriller, Contagion.

Kate’s creativity also extends to her lovely locks, which she’s worn literally HUNDREDS of different ways over the years.

Kyra Sedgwick: Her Best Hair?

August 31st, 2010 by Karen 14 Comments

It wasn’t billed as a rematch, but Sunday’s Emmy Awards pit two of TV’s most kick-@ss lady cops together for the FIFTH time in a row in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series — LAW & Order: SVU’s Detective Olivia Benson, played by my girl Mariska Hargitay, and The Closer’s Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson, played by Kyra Sedgwick — and this time Kyra came out on top (Mariska won it in 2006).

It was good to see Kyra finally get the win. I’ve always liked her (and her hair!). Shoot, it’s about time homegirl got an Emmy to put on top of ye olde fireplace mantle. Fifth time’s the charm! 🙂

Lea Michele: Her Best Hair?

August 26th, 2010 by Karen 12 Comments

I don’t watch many award shows (I’ll usually opt to read the post-show punditry the following day), but I am looking forward to the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. Actually, I guess you could say I’m filled with glee. 🙂

I was STOKED to see that actress Lea Michele (born Lea Michele Sarfati on August 29, 1986), who plays the overachieving, annoyingly lovable songstress Rachel Berry on Glee, is up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

But she’s up against stiff (not in the comedic way, of course) comic competition from Julie Louis-Dreyfus and Tina Fey, among others.

Does she have a legitimate shot? I hope so (wishing her luck!).

Marion Cotillard: Her Best Hair?

August 24th, 2010 by Karen 49 Comments

Rising French starlet Marion Cotillard’s been making a splash lately! Did you happen to catch her in Inception?

Born September 30, 1975 to two acting teachers, Marion’s been on stage and in front of cameras since childhood, appearing first in one of her father’s plays.

In 2007 she became the first person to win an Academy Award for a French language performance for the film, La Vie en Rose.

I still have some of her movies to watch (which ones have you seen?); I love how adventurous she is with her hair!

Daniel Radcliffe: His Best Hair?

August 18th, 2010 by Karen 14 Comments

Every time a new pic for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I surfaces on the interwebz I squeal with fan-girl delight! I’ve been counting down the days till the November 19 release, daydreaming about Harry’s return (and his friends, of course).

Actor Daniel Radcliffe was a lad of 12 when 2001’s Philosopher’s Stone premiered; now he’s a 21-year-old man. Watching the characters and the actors who’ve played them evolve and mature over the past decade has been one of my favorite things about the series.

Not surprisingly, Daniel long ago ditched the bowl cut he made famous in the first film. Of his different looks (some are just subtly different), I’m definitely partial to No. 9.

Emma Watson: Her Best Hair?

August 14th, 2010 by Karen 18 Comments

Gotta give props to the girls who aren’t afraid to take risks with their hair, like Harry Potter alum Hermione Granger Emma Watson, who recently chopped her shoulder-length locks into a short pixie cut (No. 9 above), declaring it “the most liberating thing ever.”

My short-lived experience with short hair wasn’t quite as liberating. I’d gone from shoulder length to a short chin-length bob, but because I was no longer able to just pull it back into a ponytail and go, I ended up spending more time on maintenance than I’d bargained for (and more money on trips to the salon to maintain its shape).

I think Em looks great with her pixie, though. Doesn’t it play up her eyes?
