I’m Straight Trippin’ over $5 TRESemme Heat Tamer Spray

July 29th, 2010 by Karen 83 Comments

tresemme heat tamer spray review

Seriously, where would we be without our friends to show us the beauty light? I imagine we’d bumble our way through the beauty-sphere, eventually finding the best stuff on our own, but isn’t it nice when a buddy offers a heads up about something truly great (and cheap!)?

To wit: my pal Marisol recently turned me on to TRESemme Heat Tamer Spray ($5), and HELLO! — talk about bomb-@ss drugstore beauty finds.

I’d been seeing it on shelves for months but wasn’t compelled to give it a try until Marisol’s recommendation.

TRESemme designed the spray mist to protect hair from heat damage, to tame frizz and to add shine.

Would You Spend $300 for Wash-and-Wear Hair?

July 14th, 2010 by Karen 71 Comments

I often fantasize about Edward Norton about wash-and-wear hair. You know the kind; you step out of the shower, air dry and TADA! — great hair.

Stylists like Jehr Schiavo say they can deliver hair’s vaunted holy grail, but their services don’t come cheap.

Schiavo’s liberating wash-and-wear hairstyles, cut to air dry to perfection, cost a mere $300-1000 (!).

I’ve estimated how much time I’ve spent over the course of my 30-odd years blowdrying my hair (45 minutes times four times a week times a redonkulous number of years equals YIKES!), and it’s, like, enough time to have taught myself Farsi or flamenco dancing.

I wouldn’t normally consider dropping $300 or more on a haircut, but when I think of the price in terms of the time I could save, well, it almost sounds reasonable.

Would you spend $300 or more for a wash-and-go haircut?

Christina Hendricks: Her Best Hair?

July 9th, 2010 by Karen 14 Comments

Christina Hendricks: Her Best Hair?

Obsessed with Anne of Green Gables, a 10-year-old Christina Hendricks (born May 3, 1975), who was very blonde at the time, decided she wanted to go red.

“Let’s just go to the drugstore and get one of those cover-the-gray rinses!” her mother said.

And they did. 🙂

At school the next day, Christina recalls, she felt like herself — and she’s gone back to the same color time and time again ever since.

These days, playing sexy secretarial pit boss and ’60s working woman Joan Holloway on AMC’s Mad Men (new season starts July 25!), Christina’s character can’t help but steal scenes, and yesterday she earned her first Emmy nomination to prove it.

Which of Christina's hairstyles do you like best?

All the Amika True Tattoo Tourmaline Curler Needs Is a Tabby Cat on the Side

July 3rd, 2010 by Karen 8 Comments

Amika true tattoo tourmaline curler

Tattoos have been a hot beauty theme lately (have you checked out Chanel’s temporary tattoos or Kat Von D’s popular makeup line at Sephora?), so I suppose it was only a matter of time before ink made its way onto a curling iron.

If you like the look of vintage tattoos, take a gander at this True Tattoo Tourmaline Curler by Amika ($169). Released for summer as one of several curling irons with sassy prints (peep the zebra and giraffe versions!), the True Tattoo model sports a tourmaline barrel (found on high-end irons to reduce frizz), a smooth clampless design and a speedy 60-second heat-up time.

This bad boy isn’t cheap, but it’s decked out like The Illustrated Man, covered in tats of panthers, hearts, roses and butterflies.

NOTE: Tabs would like to remind everyone that panthers are simply unruly tabby cats.

Turn Up the Heat with $6 Pantene Heat Protection & Shine Spray

July 1st, 2010 by Karen 42 Comments

pantene heat protection shine spray review

Riddle me this: how is it that each of the three new Pantene Heat Protection & Shine Sprays ($6) list the exact same ingredients but are supposed to target a completely different type of hair? — Fine, Medium-Thick and Curly.

Hmm, right? 🙂

Heat protecting sprays help to protect hair from damage (who knew?) caused by blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons while also reducing friction and adding shine.

These three come calling as part of the completely revamped Pantene haircare line of shampoos, conditioners and styling products for fine, thick, curly and/or color-treated hair.

Since all of these list the same ingredients, I couldn’t help but think, “Are these all just the same stuff poured into different bottles?”

T3 Elevate Heat-Seeking Iron Volumizer: A Haiku Review

June 22nd, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

t3 elevate review

T3 Elevate
Heat-Seeking Volumizer
Nineteen bucks ain’t cheap

Hair can appear flat
When flat irons work too well
That’s why you exist

Said to boost volume
When sprayed on limp or thin hair
Either wet or dry

Comb from roots to ends
Then bust out the flat iron
I tried it on mine…

My ‘do was straight — yes
But felt hella crunchy, too
As for volume? Meh

I think I’ll stick to
Straight Sexy Hair Flat Iron
For smooth, shiny locks

MBB Rating…
C 🙂

Jonathan Green Rootine Dry Shampoo: A Brush with Cleanliness

June 19th, 2010 by Karen 27 Comments

jonathan green rootine dry shampoo

Dang, Jonathan, where you been all my life? I wish I’d had Jonathan Green Rootine Dry Shampoo Brush-On Hair Powder ($19) with me on my last few trips because it would have saved two things: 1) time and 2) space in my luggage.

What’s a dry shampoo? Seriously, they’re liked sliced bread, or remote controls. They temporarily take the place, in a matter of speaking, of regular shampoo and usually come as absorbent powders in jars or aerosol cans. The powders refresh the scalp, add volume to the roots and extend blow-outs by absorbing oil and product buildup. When I don’t want to shower (it happens) or don’t have time for a regular shampoo/conditioning with water, dry shampoos come in quite handy!

Available in three shades — Light (for blonde, white or gray hair), Dark (black, brown or red hair) and Black (for black hair) — Green Rootine Dry Shampoo doesn’t contain any synthetic compounds, parabens or petrochemicals, and it’s also fragrance-free and safe for color-treated hair.

Alexander Skarsgard: His Best Hair?

June 11th, 2010 by Karen 28 Comments

I almost didn’t become a True Blood fan, but 6’4″ Alexander Skarsgard, aka Vampire Eric, put the glamour on me with his eyes!

How do you feel about the show? The next season premieres this Sunday, and I know a few gals who wouldn’t mind taking their own bite out of Eric (me first!).

Born Alexander Johan Hjalmar SkarsgÃ¥rd in Stockholm, Sweden, on August 25, 1976, Alex was a big star back home long before Bon Temps ever entered the picture, having starred in several Swedish TV series and movies. He’d even served as a member of the Swedish Marines, which might be where he learned his fancy fighting moves!

Which of Alexander's hairstyles do you like best?
