How Often Do You Get Your Hair Cut?

May 1st, 2009 by Karen 126 Comments

karen-new-hair

I must confess, I don’t do it as regularly as I should. I finally got it cut yesterday (see above!) for the first time since last June. YIKES! I blame it on laziness and the fact that it’s long, which means I can let it get scraggly without it bothering me too much. Now that I have bangs, though, I have to get better about scheduling regular trims.

How often do you cut your hair? Do you go in for regularly scheduled cuts or whenever it strikes your fancy?

P.S. That’s Prescriptives Guava Lipgloss and Papaya Lipcolor on my lips!

Nexxus Dualiste Anti-Breakage Shampoo and Conditioner: No More Knotty Hair!

April 30th, 2009 by Karen 16 Comments

nexxus-dualiste

I’ve liked having long hair, but I’m *knot* a fan of the extra work. It takes longer to wash, longer to dry, longer to style and longer to color and condition.

Long hair even takes longer to shop for! I spend way more time looking for shampoos and conditioners that not only hydrate but also deal with all of the tangles than I did when my hair was short.

I’ve been using a new line of shampoos and conditioners for color-treated hair for about a week now. It’s called Dualiste, and it’s by Nexxus.

Jennifer Garner: Her Best Hair?

April 28th, 2009 by Karen 13 Comments

jennifer garner hair poll

Anyone else planning to watch Jennifer Garner’s new movie, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (with Matthew McConaughey)? It comes out this weekend.

I know she probably won’t do any butt-kicking in the movie like she did as CIA agent Sydney Bristow in Alias, but I wish she would. Homegirl’s beat downs were freaking inspiring. That show had some *fab* fight choreography.

Born April 17, 1972 in Houston, Texas, Jennifer Anne Garner majored in chemistry before changing to drama. Maybe that’s why she lit up the screen with Michael Vartan in Alias.

Now she’s got a long list of film credits, including a couple with hubby Ben Affleck (Daredevil and Pearl Harbor).

With the exception of the crazy wigs she wore in Alias, she’ll usually stick to classic, feminine hairstyles, but she’ll still cut loose from time to time.

Which of Jennifer's hairstyles do you like best?

Hugh Jackman: His Best Hair?

April 22nd, 2009 by Karen 23 Comments

hugh jackman hair poll

Hot dayum! Hugh Jackman is one hunky and talented piece of man meat!

Born Hugh Michael Jackman on October 12, 1968, in Sydney, Australia, he acts, sings, ballroom dances, hypnotizes women with his suave charm and wins cool things like People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” award.

I’ve been a fan since 2001’s Kate and Leopold (with Meg Ryan), and now I’m counting down the days until the May 1 release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, yes!

One of these days I’d love to visit Hollywood’s famed Grauman’s Chinese Theather in Southern California. Imprints of Hugh’s hands (sans Wolverine claws) and feet were just immortalized in its famous cement walkway. Only a handful of stars get the honor, so props to my man Hugh!

Reformulated Curly Sexy Hair: A Little Curlier, Little Sexier

April 17th, 2009 by Karen 10 Comments

curly-sexy-hair-all-1

How’s it going tonight, ladies? I just finished dinner and wanted to check in before bed. Do you remember last week’s A.C. Slater flashback? It was when I started testing the newly re-formulated Curly Sexy Hair line.

After a week using the six products, I think there are a few I’ll keep in my regular rotation, but I’m still on the market for a moisturizing conditioner.

  • Moisturizing Shampoo ($13): It builds into a foamy lather that gently cleanses without stripping or irritating my scalp. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B
  • Moisturizing Conditioner ($14): My least favorite product of the bunch… It infuses curls with light moisture and doesn’t weigh down my hair, but it’s not the best detangler. I had to use four large handfuls and that barely worked. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: C
  • Spray Detangler ($15): It removes knots, moisturizes and increases the definition of my curls, but it takes forever to use on a big head of hair. That’s because I found the only way it worked was if I sprayed from roots to ends and combed it through with my fingers. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B
  • Liquid Curling Gel ($16): This one defines and holds my curls all day long without leaving them crunchy. I think my favorite part about it is that the gel doesn’t feel goopy or sticky. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B
  • Curl Power Spray Foam ($16): Using it, my curls do look a little more curly than usual. I think it would work better on thin, curly hair that’s more manageable than mine. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B
  • Curling Creme ($16): To ramp up the shine and add some definition to curls, the Curling Creme gets the job done. It even adds a little weight, which helps to keep my unruly ends under control. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

Apart from the conditioner, I think the line is just okay. All of the products have the same yummy light green apple scent and do work to a respectable degree. None of them made my scalp flake, which happens sometimes with new hair stuff. I’m glad about that, and I think my curls are a little better defined and under more control than they’d been prior to last week, but the overall effect hasn’t been significant enough for me to run out and scream from the rooftops, ya know?

Yay, weekend!

We made it!

Tomorrow night I’m supposed to go to a friend’s birthday shindig here. It’s a mile-long walking tour of supposedly haunted places in SF. Sounds like fun, but I hope none of the ghosts follow me home!

Hope you’re having a great night.

Keira Knightley: Her Best Hair?

April 17th, 2009 by Karen 15 Comments

Keira Knightley's best hair?

From the wee age of three, Keira Christina Knightly (born March 26, 1985) knew she wanted to be in pictures. She begged her mother for an agent, and finally, at the age of six, she got one as a reward for studying hard.

The first time I saw her on screen was in the 2003 movie Bend It Like Beckham. I thought she was lovely, and that short hair — so spunky!

Since then, Keira’s star has steadily risen. She’s appeared in a host of blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean (yargh, mateys!) with my man Johnny Depp…

… and been up for some big awards already, earning Best Actress nominations from the Academy Awards and Golden Globes for her roles in Pride and Prejudice and Atonement.

Throughout her career Keira’s changed her hair often, going from short to long and dark to light. She always looks distinctive and sassy with short hair, but I dig those long locks, too.

Which of Keira's hairstyles do you like most?

How Do You Remove Excess Facial Hair?

April 15th, 2009 by Karen 39 Comments

groucho-marx

I was looking through some old pictures at my parents’ house on Easter Sunday and ooooh wee! — the upper lip-mustache-and-eyebrow sitch in some of my school pics was out of control.

The funny thing is I remember furry face being more socially accepted than it is today. As a teenager, I didn’t pluck or wax, and neither did any of my girlfriends. We weren’t complete werewolves, but we still managed to get dates, fur and all.

By a few years after high school, the hair thing had gone out of style, and women were doing all sorts of things to get smooth and hair-free.

I once had a creative roommate who’d bleach her upper lip hair (making it less obvious), and then cut the bleached hairs away with a scissors — this, to avoid the pain of waxing.

slant-tip-tweezerman

To smooth my ‘stache, I’ll usually wax my upper lip with either Sally Hansen’s Hair Remover Wax Strip Kit ($6) or Parisa Warm Wax ($12); to trim my brows, I’ll pluck with a Tweezerman, and then trim off any wayward hairs with a scissors.

It seems like most women go for plucking, waxing or threading…

How about you?

Jennifer Lopez: Her Best Hair?

April 12th, 2009 by Karen 18 Comments

Jennifer Lopez: Her Best Hair?

After two rejected auditions to work as one of the Fly Girl backup dancers on the ’90s comedy show In Living Color, J.Lo’s third try was the charm. The rest is history. Twenty-three films, seven albums, a series of high-profile romances (remember Bennifer?) and a fashion/fragrance line later, the South Bronx-born Jennifer Lynn Lopez (July 24, 1969) never has to dance backup again.

Which of J.Lo's hairstyles do you like best?
