Makeup and Beauty Blog Confessional

March 13th, 2009 by Karen 44 Comments

Heya, cuties! I’m feeling the need for some end-of-the-week beauty catharsis. As I sit here typing this sentence, my hair stinks more than sticky pleather pumps in the summertime.

This week several beauty rituals fell by the wayside. There were so many exciting makeup releases to cover (Chanel summer!!), plus I had hella reading and homework to do.

Thank goodness for all the fab beauty remedies we have at our fingertips. Without ’em, I might’ve completely devolved into Pig-Pen territory.

With the Powers-That-Be as my witness, here are all the beauty violations I’m guilty of this week.

Beauty Confession: I can’t remember the last time I washed my hair. I think it might’ve been Tuesday? I’m usually very motivated to be clean so I shower every night, but for the past few days I haven’t been washing my hair before bed. Drying five pounds of wet hair at 1 a.m. is no fun.

When my hair smells sketchy in the mornings I reach for Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo ($24). It’s a fine powder mist I spray on my roots. Naturia removes the greasy smell, erases oily shine and boosts volume. While not as refreshing as a real deal shampoo sesh, in a pinch it gets the job done.

sally-hansen-kwik-off
Beauty Confession: All the nails on my left hand are different colors. Avril Lavigne could get away with it during her Sk8er Boi era. On me it just looks plain crazy.

When I’m feeling swamped, eliminating the cotton ball from the nail polish removal equation makes the job a billion times easier.

Sally Hansen has one for busy beauties like us called Kwik Off ($4). It’s a big ole’ sponge soaked with nail polish remover and housed in a jar. I open the jar up, stick my finger into a pre-made hole in the sponge, twist it around a few times, et voila — my nail polish disappears faster than Cuba Gooding Jr.’s film career.

clean-shower-fresh-eau-de-parfum
Beauty Confession: I haven’t showered in two days. Earlier I mentioned that I usually shower every night, but last night I was totally glued to the tube (The Millionaire Matchmaker on Bravo, watch it!). Plus, just the thought of squeezing a jar of body wash felt exhausting.

Try Tresemme 24 Hour Body For Bouncy, Touchable Hair

March 12th, 2009 by Karen 24 Comments

tresemme-24-hour

Hola, chicas bonitas!

Ever heard of the old saying, “Go big or go home”? I think it mostly refers to trying your best and striving for the top, but as a child of the 80’s, I can’t help but automatically assume it’s also about the quest for big, voluminous hair!

Let me explain.

My hair was so big from 1987 to 1991 that it could’ve commanded its own orbit. Tall bangs, spiral curls, side wings (soooo tragic) — my crispy, poofy ‘do walked that fine line between madness and genius.

Back then, if you wanted big volume it came with a price. Gels left hair crunchier than a potato chip! To get hold that lasted all day long, you had to douse your mane with a cloud of hairspray (between classes) to maintain the bigness.

But that’s no longer the case. If you crave lots of volume, you can totally get big hair sans the crusty side effects.

Lately, I’ve really been wanting the look of bouncy, touchable, Victoria’s Secret runway hair. To get a full mane without the crunch, I’ve been using two volumizing styling products from Tresemme’s new 24 Hour Body Collection: 24 Hour Body Sculpting Spray Gel and 24 Hour Weightless Creme ($5 each)

What is it?

Tresemme’s 24 Hour Body collection hair products deliver volume and hold while maintaining a touchable look and feel.

I spray lightweight Tresemme 24 Hour Body Sculpting Spray Gel onto my damp, wavy hair and then gently run my fingers from the root to tip to loosen the waves. When my hair dries, the gel leaves it with lots of volume and hold that lasts from morning until night.

I really like how it performs, but there’s one thing I wish I could change. The spray pump feels uncomfortable in my hand, and I can only spray the right side of my head comfortably. When I try to spray the left side, my hand and wrist end up twisting at an odd angle. I’ve tried several things to remedy the sitch, like holding the bottle in my left hand and moving the angle of my head, etc., but no matter what, the pump still feels a little awkward in my paws. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B-

Tresemme’s 24 Hour Body Weightless Creme, on the other hand (LOL!) is much easier to use. After spraying my hair with Sculpting Spray Gel, I run a dollup of Weightless Creme on the top layers, concentrating it on the ends. The non-greasy styling cream reduces frizz, adds shine and leaves my ‘do bouncy. It also has a light, fruity scent that smells great. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Bounce!

Tell me girls, do you have any volumizing tips and tricks? How do you get big, bouncy hair?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Mandy Moore: Her Best Hair?

March 12th, 2009 by Karen 15 Comments

makeup blog beauty blog how to apply makeup mac cosmetics

Amanda Leigh “Mandy” Moore, born April 10, 1984, was just 15 when her breakthrough single, Candy, hit the airwaves in 1999.

Now, don’t even pretend you don’t know the lyrics, baby girl. It’s spontaneous pop music singalong time!

So baby come to me
Show me you are
Sweet to me
Like sugar to my heart, baby
I’m craving for you
I’m missing you like candaaay!

LOL! Whatev, you know that was fun. 😉

Anyhoo, since Candy was released little Miss Mandy has been busy making both music and films (who else cried while watching A Walk to Remember?).

She’s all grown up now, and as of last Tuesday totally hitched. Yup, Mandy said, “I do” to singer Ryan Adams, to whom she got engaged last month.

I wonder how she wore her hair during the ceremony. I always admired how Mandy’s never been afraid of taking risks with her hair. Long or short, blonde or black — whatever she rocks I think she always looks great.

Which of Mandy's hairstyles do you like best?

Tame Your Tresses with Pantene’s Pro-V Nature Fusion Collection

March 9th, 2009 by Karen 14 Comments

pantene nature fusion collection 1

What’s up, ladies! Do you ever go through phases where your hair just looks whack?

i blame this mess on bobby brown

For three or four months now my hair’s been looking extra shagadelic — and not in a good way.

I was planning to hack off a few inches this month but changed my mind after reading my March horoscope on Astrology Zone. Susan Miller suggests Geminis delay any makeovers until after April 17, and since Suze’s predictions tend to be dead on for me, I’m sticking with my bird’s nest-y ‘do for a few more weeks. I am not about to mess with the stars!

For now, I may as well make this extra 10 pounds of hair sing for its supper by using it to test some new hair products.

pantene pro v nature fusion

Over the weekend I put some goodies from Pantene’s new Nature Fusion Collection to the test, comparing them to the Aveeno Nourish+ products I reviewed last week. The star ingredient in the new line is the Cassia plant, a shrub related to beans (prooot!) and peas.

Pantene claims Cassia helps to create smoother, shinier and generally better-behaved hair.

How does it work?

After using the Nature Fusion Balance Shampoo ($4), Moisture Balance Conditioner ($4) and Smoothing Creme ($6) three times since Friday, my hair has seemed shinier and more manageable than usual.

Products in the Nature Fusion line cost roughly half as much as the Aveeno Nourish+ products I reviewed last week, but I like both lines for different reasons.

What’s Your Favorite Shampoo?

March 6th, 2009 by Karen 39 Comments

Favorite shampoo

Do you have a favorite? Mine’s Bumble & Bumble’s Gentle ($20) because it’s really hydrating and never strips the color, but I’m looking to try something new.

A few good drugstore shampoos to try

  • Aussie Opposites Attract
  • Suave Professionals Vibrant Shine
  • Aveeno Nourish+

What’s your favorite shampoo, and why do you like it?

Aveeno Nourish+ Hair Care Collection: Knot Your Average Hair Care

March 2nd, 2009 by Karen 30 Comments

aveeno nourish moisturize shampoo conditioner leave in review

I have combination oily/dry skin and have been using Aveeno’s kick arse moisturizing lotions for years (“Ahhh, Aveeno!”). I expected a lot when I found out the company plans to release a new hair care line this April.

Nourish+ contains what Aveeno calls Nourishing Wheat Complex (LOL, reminds me of my endless quest for fiber), a compound that targets damaged hair.

A few days ago I started my testing, running Aveeno Nourish+ Revitalize Shampoo, Nourish+ Revitalize Conditioner and Nourish+Condition Leave-In Treatment ($7 each) through their paces.

The marketing said I’d see results in just three washes — that’s an incredible claim, right? — with the product supposedly working by zeroing in on the weakest part of the hair follicle and then depositing just the right amount of proteins to make hair look and feel stronger, softer and shinier.

Three washes?

Softness, shine and volume: check!

Well, three washes later, and the verdict’s in: I do see an increase in softness, shine and volume.

But in terms of damage repair, I think it’s harder to tell. Even though my ends are dry, I didn’t have many split ends to begin with, and I haven’t really seen a visible change in hair strength. I’m glad to see that the products haven’t made the situation worse… That’s always a good thing.

The change in softness and shine were both obvious enough for me to notice, and for that I’m sold on Nourish+.

A clean, fresh scent and fewer knots

Beyond the added softness and shine, all three products are excellent detanglers. Since I started my Nourish+ regimen, brushing my hair has been easier. I have fewer knots and have been seeing less hair go down the drain in the shower.

What’s the Biggest Risk You Ever Took with Your Hair?

February 28th, 2009 by Karen 41 Comments

What’s the biggest risk you ever took with your hair?

Mine was right after a traumatic breakup in 1999. On a heartbreak whim I asked my stylist to chop my long black hair, which was down to my elbows, into a chin-length layered style with the ends flipped out.

But because that wasn’t enough of a change to purge my emotional demons, I went back the following week and asked for chunky red highlights.

I remember how liberating it felt to transform my look. It was like letting go of all of that hair somehow unloaded the baggage of my failed relationship.

Of course, I also remember how much of a pain-in-the-arse it was to grow out the new cut, LOL! I hate how my hair feels when it’s in that mid-length stage, creeping down the back of my neck.

What’s the biggest risk you ever took with your hair? Let me know in the comments. And try your luck with the Makeup and Beauty Blog slot machine (click the BET MAX button to play). Have fun and good luck!

Get Your Paws On Aveeno Nourish+ Hair Care Collection Before Anybody Else

February 26th, 2009 by Karen 108 Comments

This giveaway is closed. Congrats to the winner, Liz. Thank you for entering!

aveeno nourish haircare giveaway

So Glam Media is sponsoring a giveaway that I thought you gals might dig.

Drugstore body care line Aveeno is famous for their soothing lotions. Well, they plan to launch their first hair care line, codenamed the Nourish+ Hair Care Collection, this April.

Trying new beauty products before they go on sale is like attending an exclusive movie screening, and the giveaway’s a chance to get an early look at Nourish+.

The prize

One lucky winner will get three products from the new line — Nourish+ shampoo, the regular conditioner and the new leave-in conditioner (a $21 value).

What Aveeno says about Nourish+

  • It’s revolutionary! — combining nature and science (like the Terminator) to bring damaged hair back to life in just three washes.
  • The Nourish+ Nourishing Wheat Complex has a positive electrical charge that attracts the negatively charged damaged parts of the hair follicle, delivering the right amount of proteins needed to help moisturize and repair dry hair.
  • The line includes Nourish + Moisturize, Nourish + Revitalize, and Nourish + Volumize shampoos and conditioners, as well as Nourish + Condition Leave-In Treatment ($7 each).
  • At last week’s Oscars in Los Angeles, Aveeno Nourish+ Hair Care Collection sponsored the Glam VIP Touch Up Lounge at the Leeza Gibbons Oscar party. Viewers received a backstage look at celeb hair touch-ups provided by Aveeno Nourish+.
