A Little Bit of Sunshine

May 17th, 2023 by Karen 13 Comments

keep your face toward the sunshine

I’ve been listening to songs with the word sunshine in the title all morning. No particular reason other than it’s sunny outside today in my neck of the woods (Marin County), and the temperature is at that sweet spot where it’s warm enough to go outside in jeans and a t-shirt. It’s so nice!

If only it could always be just a little bit warm but not too hot – maybe I have to move to Hawaii for this? I’m still manifesting that one-story house in Kailua with a white picket fence and pink roses. LOL!

Anywho, if you have a pick-me-up playlist, add these three sunshiny songs stat.

Sunshine on me

A little bit of sunshine

I’ve got a pocketful of sunshine

While we’re on the topic of sunshine, I recently discovered the wonderful world of Korean sunscreen. They get so much hype amongst derms and skincare enthusiasts online, and now I see why they have such a devoted fanbase.

I’ve got three in my arsenal right meow: Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 36, Laneige Hydro UV Defense SPF 50+ and Etude House Sunprise Mild Watery Light SPF 50+.

Side note, all of these brands are owned by Amore Pacific, and I write for Innisfree and Laneige.

Some quick thoughts…

Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 36

The tube is decently sized and you get a good amount for $16. While all three sunscreens have a lotion-y and light texture compared to American sunscreens, this one is relatively thick compared to the other two and not as moisturizing. It doesn’t feel as weightless as the others, for sure. I wish the SPF was higher, but if I’m working from home, it does the trick. Oh, and this one smells the most sunscreen-y. I like it enough, but I probably won’t buy another bottle.

Laneige Hydro UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50+

Oh my gosh, SO GOOD that I just put a jumbo-size tube in my cart! Absolutely lovely, and very much like the Shiseido sunscreen that I used and loved for years, but even better because it’s more moisturizing and feels even lighter on my skin. I love that I can reapply it throughout the day, and it doesn’t feel heavy or sticky. Layers well underneath makeup, too. I don’t mind the light, floral scent either. A pretty, dewy finish that’s not too shiny. My dry skin loves it. It’s currently on sale now on the Laneige website, by the way.

Etude Sunprise Mild Watery Light SPF 50+

Believe it or not, this was a Mother’s Day gift from El Hub and Connor! I love it, too. It’s the lightest and thinnest in texture of all three, almost like a gel, and it just melts right into my skin. Like Laneige, it’s a joy to reapply. Now, it’s not as intensely moisturizing as Laneige, but it should be enough if your skin isn’t excessively dry. The scent is kinda lemony and fresh. Very light. A perfect summer sunscreen for very hot days! You can find it on Amazon.

One last sunshiny-related bit. Cookbooks make my heart sing, and here is the latest edition to my library.

So, I’ve actually never made Korean food before, and I’m kind of intimidated by all of the elements involved in a Korean meal. Apparently there’s a lot of side dish action! While I live for a bevy of side dishes, especially ones involving veggies or various fried dumplings and whatnot, I don’t know if I could handle cooking an entire Korean meal with all the fixings by myself. It seems like a lot to juggle!

Have you cooked Korean food before? Where should I start?

Sephora Sale Shopping

April 18th, 2023 by Karen 11 Comments

I’m really excited about the skin care, makeup and hair goodies I picked up recently at the Sephora sale. 🙂

A couple of standby favorites were in the mix of course; Kate Somerville Anti Bac and Anastasia Brow Wiz in Dark Brown, I’m talking to you!

I also grabbed a few new-to-me things, including this box of Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Peel Pads.

I’m hesitant to add any steps to my already very simple skincare routine, but I’ve been needing some help with hyperpigmentation and heard raves from derms and estheticians about how this product works wonders on acne, uneven tone and fine lines.

You’re supposed to use it the in evenings, two to three times a week, which I can totally handle. Anything more than that, ugh, forget about it.

Have you tried it? I’m excited about it!

And because I’m a sunscreen hoarder, I bought a tube of Innisfree Daily UV Defense. Side note, I write for Innisfree! Anywho, it has chemical filters and is supposed to layer well with makeup. I plan to use it as an everyday sunscreen.

I’ve come to the realization that I really love trying foundations and concealers and can no longer fight the obsession. I couldn’t resist the siren call of Charlotte Tilbury’s Beautiful Skin Foundation and Concealer. I bought 8 Warm in the Foundation and 8 in the Concealer, by the way.

The Foundation is spot on my color, but I’m thinking the Concealer might be a little too light for my under-eye area. Hmm. I’m debating on whether or not I need to exchange it.

Last but not least, I finally gave in and bought a full-size version of Bumble and Bumble’s Hairdressers Invisible Oil. I love this stuff! It’s great for softening and smoothing ends. The trick is, though, to apply a tiny bit, otherwise your hair will feel super greasy.

I’m hoping the bottle will last me forever. LOL!

Anywho, let me know if you’ve tried any of these things. I always love to hear what you like and don’t like.

Karen

P.S. Happy Tuesday!

More Makeup Gems From Innisfree

July 16th, 2020 by Karen 7 Comments

innisfree eyeshadows contour powder tint review
South Korean cosmetics brand Innisfree!

Can we talk makeup gems for a moment? Because Innisfree has so many of them! The South Korean cosmetics and skin care brand’s $6 shimmer shadows could have just as easily come from Shu Uemura, Armani or Guerlain, but they’re way, way, way more affordable.

I’ll get to some of their other stuff in a second, but the shimmers…SWOON. And I haven’t even been into shimmery product like this lately, really, but the two shimmer shadows I tried (a warm reddish bronze and a peachy gold) make me wish for every color in the line.

They’re both brimming with pigment, and the powders are so finely sieved that creating smooth gradients is a breeze. The flattering pearly finish glows without highlighting fine lines either.

I still can’t get over the fact that the pans are only six bucks!

Other things I’ve recently tried and liked from the brand…

My Palette My Countouring in Shade 4

Weird name, because it’s just one color and not a palette, but this powder is so fab. It’s a cool-toned taupe with a slightly gray undertone, so you can easily create the illusion of cheeks that are sharp enough to cut glass. I mainly use this as a crease color to deepen my eye sockets, and it’s great for that. Available in four shades for $8 each.

Innisfree Mini Reviews! An Affordable, Wearable Korean Makeup Brand Blush, Highlighter, Lip Balm and Mascara

July 7th, 2020 by Karen 12 Comments

innisfree mini reviews
—-> I found your new favorite affordable makeup brand.

Well, hello there, $8 blush!

I’m really excited about Innisfree, even though I’ve only just discovered them. They aren’t exactly new. They’re a Korean makeup and skincare brand with some great deals. The products are made with ingredients from the protected island of Jeju, and they say that every product contains an average of 80% naturally-derived ingredients they source responsibly from the island… Sounds very mysterious. The brand name, Innisfree, is from a William Butler Yeats poem, BTW.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

Innisfree has a few freestanding stores here in the Bay Area, and they’re also available online and at select Sephoras across the US.

Here are a few of their products I’ve been using and loving…

My Blusher in Pink Coral ($8)

This one’s a sheer powder blush that doesn’t look or feel heavy. If you like sheer blushes like the ones from Clinique and Neutrogena, it’s an affordable dupe.

My Highlighter Cream in 1 ($8)

Picture an understated MAC Cream Color Base in Pearl. It’s pale beige pearl with a satin sheen, and it almost looks like a gloss sometimes. It’s long lasting, too.

(I can’t believe this is only eight bucks!)

I’m wearing Innisfree My Blusher in 19 and Innisfree My Highlighter Cream in 1 on my cheeks, and I used the My Lipbalm in Green Peppermint Tea to prep my lips.

My Lipbalm in Green Peppermint Tea ($10)

Ooh, good stuff! It’s colorless, thick and rich, almost like a cuticle cream (in fact, sometimes I use it on my cuticles!). Tastes and smells like mint tea and NOT toothpaste, and it layers seamlessly underneath lipstick. Green Peppermint Tea is just one of the “flavors.” There are also 10 other options, each one tinted with a different shade of sheer pink, orange, berry or coral.

Skinny Waterproof Mascara ($12)

The newest version of this waterproof mascara comes in different packaging, but the ultra thin wand is the same. I like this for the lower lash line and outer and inner corners because the dainty wand easily stretches and lengthens each individual lash.

So skinny!

Smart Drawing Blusher in Cherry Blossom (about $12)

Seems like this cream tube blush has been replaced by a pan, but if you’re overseas, I hear it’s still available. Unlike a lot of cream blushes, it completely dries down after it’s blended in. It almost has a silicone-y smooth consistency, and I really love how this blush doesn’t separate or break up when it’s layered on top of tinted moisturizer or foundation. It does a bang-up job of staying intact.

Have you tried anything from Innisfree before? I’m low-key obsessed.

How to Wear Bright Eyeshadow Without Feeling Like You’re Crazypants

June 11th, 2020 by Karen 9 Comments

juvias place wahala bright purple

My three top tips for wearing colorful yet wearable eye makeup. You know I’m all about approachable looks these days!

1. Pick one bright element of your eye look and run with it

When wearing bright eyeshadow, you can dial it back quite a bit and still make a big impact.

It might seem like everyone who wears bright eyeshadow adds all the bells and whistles, combining each and every aspect of strong, bold makeup, especially if you judge by all of the Instagram-style trends that appear to be everywhere, but…ya know, just because it seems like everyone online is wearing neon orange eyeshadow with bladed brows, razor sharp tails and a blown-out rainbow-hued lower lash line doesn’t mean that’s actually happening in real life. (Side note: this is a lesson I learned along the way.)

Lately I’ve been taking a restrained approach to applying bright eyeshadow, and I think it’s more approachable and less intimidating than brights can be.

The key is to just pick one colorful element and roll with it — like, a smoky metallic green lid, or an intense spotlight of bright teal in the inner corner highlight — and letting that single statement be the life of the party, rather than combining multiple bold eye makeup elements.

The bold statement I chose for the makeup I’m wearing here is the purple smoky eyeshadow. Everything else is restrained.

2. Keep the rest of your eye makeup understated

Speaking of restraint, letting one bright eye element steal the spotlight works well when the rest of the eye makeup is kept low-key.

So, instead of adding a pair falsies the size of bat wings, go with your natural lashes and a lengthening mascara instead, and if you’re highlighting your inner corner, dial back the intensity of the shimmer and opt for a sheen or a satin finish instead.

Lastly, if you’re lining your waterlines, swap the black eye pencil for an eyeliner in a color similar to but darker than your single bright element. This will still intensify things but won’t look as harsh as black liner can look sometimes.

That’s what I did here! To complement the cool purple shadow, I lined my waterlines with a mix of brown and purple pencils (I layered the purple on top of the brown).

3. Purposefully pull back on your base, cheeks and lip products

Yup, keeping your makeup minimal on the rest of your face also helps to keep the focus on your single bright element. You’ll want makeup that doesn’t compete with your eyeshadow, so
go for the barest of bare bases — for me, that means a sheer tinted moisturizer and a sheer cream or liquid blush (and/or bronzer).

If you want to add highlights, go for something with a glossy finish instead of a frosty or metallic finish.

And don’t forget to do your version of nude lips, of course! ?
