Latest Ulta Haul: Skin Care, Sunscreen and Makeup

April 27th, 2021 by Karen 17 Comments

ulta skin care haul april 2021
Goodies from Ulta

Look what you made me do, Ulta! ?

Remember how I mentioned there’s a new Ulta in my town? And how it’s barely a five-minute drive away from mi casa?

YES, I know. They ran a 20% off sale on everything last weekend, and this is what found its way into my basket…

ulta basket sunscreen skin care april 2021
Ooh-la-la!

Lots of sunscreen and skin care as you can see. Yup, I still love makeup, and I was tempted by quite a few things (like this palette and these cream shadows), but I resisted *this time* around because I’ve decided that it’s time to get serious about fighting the good fight against hyperpigmentation. If I’m going to go to the effort of doing retinol, Vitamin C, AHAs and BHAS, I’ve got to get the sun protection part of the equation right, so sun protection was my main goal on this trip.

Side note: having a product game plan before beauty shopping helps a ton. I’ve blacked out at Ulta and Sephora one too many times, leaving with a basket of things I didn’t even plan on getting, and I know I’m not alone in this either. Having a plan stopped me from being tempted by things I probably don’t need, so I wholeheartedly recommend this strategy next time you head to the mothership.

Back to the sunscreen! What I really wanted was a face sunscreen, specifically a tinted one because I’ve heard that tinted sunscreens can help medium and darker skin tones prevent hyper pigmentation.

cerave cotz sunscreen swatches
I’m on a mission to keep the hyper pigmentation at bay.

The Cotz one is going back, unfortunately. I like how smooth and fresh my skin looked after applying it, and I liked the depth of the tint (I couldn’t see it at all on my skin), but it made my face itch. ?

The tinted Cerave, though, is a keeper! The tint is a little lighter than the Cotz one so I can see a slight cast at first, but it fades after it settles in.

I also like how lightweight and moisturizing it is. Only thing is…the tint rubs off on my mask and clothes, so I’m going to use the La Roche Posay Melt In Milk sunscreen on days when I wear white shirts or tees (which I do often).

la roche posay in milk swatch
LOVE THIS!

OMG, this is SO GOOD. The name “Melt In Milk” really does it justice because it absorbs incredibly quickly and completely, leaving behind absolutely no cast whatsoever. Plus, it’s moisturizing but isn’t sticky or heavy. I also like the amount of SPF protection and that it doesn’t have a strong sunscreen-y scent.

Speaking of scents…don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind scented skincare at all. I just prefer that the stuff I wear on my face not smell like a margarita. But on beach days or fishing days or camping trips, I do love a summery, sunscreen-y scent, which is why I picked up a couple things from Sun Bum, including this SPF70 lotion.

sun bum swatch
Smells like summer

It smells like a coconut and pineapple smoothie, and it doesn’t leave a cast. I also bought the spray version because I’m really trying hard to get better at reapplying, and I figure that having a spray might help me stay motivated, since it’s faster and easier to apply than the lotion.

In non-sunscreen news…I stocked up on the retinol cream I’ve been using from Neutrogena, and I grabbed an old-school fave of mine by Proactiv.

pro activ neturogena in hand
Pimples and wrinkles… GOOD TIMES.

I wore this benzoyl peroxide cream back in my early 30s, back before I discovered Kate Somerville Anti-Bac Clearing Lotion. I still love the Kate Somerville, but they just keep jacking up the price! Last time I went to Sephora it was $52 (it was $39 when I started using it back in 2013). I’m pretty cranky about the price increase, so I’ve been trying to find an alternative… When I re-stumbled on this cream at Ulta for $35, I was stoked. I hope it still works for me.

Other stuff I picked up: a bottle of Pattern leave-in conditioner and couple of Clinique liquid eyeliners in basic brown and black.

pattern leave in conditioner
Waves for days
clinique pretty easy liner brown and black
This liner really is pretty easy!

Have you done any beauty shopping lately at Ulta or anywhere else?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 675

April 26th, 2021 by Karen 22 Comments

pink tree think of what could go right
There’s so much good stuff waiting for you

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

    1. Tea or coffee?

Today? Coffee…ideally something that’s not too strong, because I don’t want to be shaking all day long.

    2. Netflix marathon or a book?

Normally, I’d say a book, but I’ve been so tired lately that I’m going to go with the Netflix marathon.

    3. Podcast or music?

    Music!

    4. Stay up late or wake up early?

This answer has clearly changed over the years, but nowadays I’d rather wake up early, but that is ONLY assuming I can have lots of coffee first thing in the morning; otherwise, I’m useless, man.

    5. Jeans or leggings?

Much as I love the comfort of leggings, I’m going to have to go with jeans at this point of the pandemic… I’m much more productive when I’m not dressed in pajama-like clothing all day long.

    6. Sweatshirt or t-shirt?

    T-shirt. I’ll take a white cotton v-neck please.

    7. Brow pencil or lip pencil?

Brow pencil all the way now, but if this were 1995 we were talking about, there would be no question about it — lip pencil. MAC Mahogany was my love back then!

    8. Gerbera daisies or a succulent?

    I’ll take the gerberas please.

    9. Mud mask or sheet mask?

A moisturizing sheet mask would be lovely right meow.

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

    6. Sweatshirt or t-shirt?
    7. Brow pencil or lip pencil?
    8. Gerbera daisies or a succulent?
    9. Mud mask or sheet mask?

P.P.S. Good morning, beautiful girl. So here we are — another Monday and another fresh start. Doesn’t a clean slate feel good? I know it does on my end, for sure. I want you to know that I’m so proud of all the progress you’ve made so far. Even if it’s slow progress, it’s *still* progress.

I’ve come across a tip that’s been helping me a lot lately. Here it is: if there’s a task you’ve been putting off for whatever reason — and in my case, it’s cleaning out my office (yes, I know, eternally broken record) — then do just five minutes of that task. Then, spend the next five minutes doing something you enjoy. Keep alternating the “not so fun” with the “fun” tasks in five-minute increments.

Next thing you know, you’ll have made real progress. Try it this week! ?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 656

April 25th, 2021 by Karen 5 Comments

Cue the lights! Ready the red carpet! It’s the Cat Academy Awards!

Biggest night of the year on ye olde social calendar. As you know, Tabs was an award-winning cat actor, among his many other talents. He starred in dozens of blockbusters and successful arthouse films, winning five Cat Academy Awards and eight Golden Kitty Globes, among many other accolades, over the course of his illustrious career.

If he were still here, no doubt he would have been walking the red carpet in Hollywood tonight.

He used to say that it was enough just to be nominated, but I tell you what, he was furrociously competitive. No matter how calm and cool he seemed, he still wanted to win.

He worked hard on his craft. He considered himself a cat method actor.

Sometimes he would remain in character for weeks and months after filming a movie.

Good luck to all the nominees tonight! I wish everyone could win.

Karen

Saturday Surfing, April 24, 2021

ulta beauty novato
Kickin’ off the weekend!

Hi, babe. Happy Saturday! ? Care to guess where I’m headed soon?

Yup, one of these bad gals just opened in my town, and it’s dangerously close! I can drive there in 5 minutes, which is DANGEROUS. I could be surrounded by the comfort of skin care and countless blushes in less time than the duration of the average TV commercial break.

You know mama loves a deal.

They’re having a sale this weekend, so I’m going to stock up on retinol, sunscreen and some hair things.

On my wish list so far…

  • Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream
  • Cotz Mineral Sunscreen
  • Cerave Hydrating Sunscreen Face Sheer Tint
  • Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ WetForce for Sensitive Skin and Children
  • Pattern Leave-In Conditioner
  • Vitabath Lavender Chamomile Cleansing & Foaming Shower Oil
  • Philosophy Nature In A Jar Nourishing In-Shower Oil With Hemp-Derived Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil

This week’s reading

  • Dudes around the world finally figuring out what we knew all along — makeup is awesome.
  • Meet the Oscar-nominated hair-and-makeup team that transformed Viola Davis into Ma Rainey.
  • Well, now I want to paint my nails yellow.
  • How to tell if you’re allergic to gel manicures.
  • Chances are your fave fragrances will probably be reformulated very soon.
  • I just added Grasse, France, a.k.a. the world capital of perfume, to my travel bucket list.

YUM.

Because I need all the help I can get…

Can I haz that jacket?

Love it.

Working on my brain fitness…

What’s on your agenda this weekend? ?

Best Day Ever Makeup (I Got My Second Shot!), Plus Mini-Reviews of Revlon ColorStay Light Cover Foundation, Clinique Even Better All-Over Concealer + Eraser and More

April 22nd, 2021 by Karen 27 Comments

second shot
Hugging myself because today is a great day! ?

I got my second vaccine shot yesterday and, FYI, this Band-Aid is officially the best Band-Aid that ever was or ever will be. After it falls off, I may tuck it away in an envelope so that years from now, when everything is back to “normal” (“air quotes”) and we’re doing things like going to the Catalina Wine Mixer again without feeling creeped out about crowds, I’ll find this Band-Aid and think, “Eww, you’re super gross, Karen,” and “Gosh, I sure was happy that day.”

You know this is one of my favorite movies, right?

This is the most hopeful I’ve felt in a long, long time.

Because I didn’t want to forget how happy I feel, I put on some fun temporary tattoos by Tattly and some makeup to commemorate the day. I’m wearing a mish-mosh of classic NARS eyeshadows (the Cordura and Isolde duos, and Blondie, Biarritz and Abysinnia) and a few new-to-me products for everything else.

I’m wearing a mix of classic NARS and a few new-to-me base, cheek and lip products

Some first impressions

laura mercier chai blush

Revlon Colorstay Light Cover Foundation: I (incorrectly) assumed that because this has “Light Cover” in the name, it was a shot-out to sheer coverage, but nope! — it’s a reference to how light this full-coverage matte liquid foundation feels on skin. It’s light as a feather! The coverage of one layer is just shy of full, which is enough to hide red areas, freckles and uneven pigmentation. Then, you can add more layers, which is easy to do because it blends so well, if you want to bump up the coverage to full. For reference, my skin is dry on my cheeks and oily on my forehead, and this foundation handles both areas like a champ. Available in 12 shades, $13.99 each.

Clinque Even Better All-Over Concealer + Eraser: Normally, full-coverage concealers look thick, dry and cakey when I wear them in my under-eye area, so I kind of avoid them, but this demi-matte liquid concealer completely steers clear of fine lines. Even after it dries down, it remains smooth and flexible, which is very cool! I plan to use this as a foundation, actually, because I think it’ll be great for that too. Available in a whopping 42 shades, $26 each.

L’Oreal Shiny Lip Stain in Be Outstanding: This is neato. It’s a long lasting, lightweight, non-sticky liquid lipstick with an ultra-shiny finish. Sort of like an amalgam of every lip product under the sun! This particular one, Be Outstanding, is a rosy brown, but there are lots of other colors to choose from in the line, which, FYI, is BOGO right now at Ulta. Available in 12 shades, $11.99 each.

Laura Mercier Blush in Chai: I love LM’s blushes for their pigment and smooth finish, and this matte rose is one of her prettiest and most natural-looking ones, IMHO. Available in 10 shades, $32 each.

Temporary tattoos by Tattly

The pandemic and the lockdowns have transformed me into something of a hermit, and I’m still freaked out a little (OK, a lot) about the thought of being among large groups of people, and like…doing things. LOL! I keep reminding myself that this too shall pass, and we’ll be able to do more things very soon. Like, I texted an old friend I used to work with at the bakery and asked her if she wanted to go on a hike in a couple weeks. I’m also starting to mentally psych myself up to go to an outdoor small-group HIIT class at the gym sometime in May!

Part of me still worries that we could backslide if the virus takes a different course, so I keep telling myself not to get too excited about returning to normal life right away…but another part of me also wants to be hopeful.

This past year has changed me so much, and I’m betting it’s changed you too.

This or That: The Face Powder Edition

April 21st, 2021 by Karen 7 Comments

mac studio waterweight powder pressed 2

How to play

Pick one or the other for each of the questions below, and copy/paste your answers in the comments. Can’t wait to see your picks! Mine are listed below. ?

This or That: The High- or Low-End Beauty Edition, Part II

  • Loose or pressed?
  • Translucent or tinted?
  • Mineral or non-mineral powder?
  • Baking with powder — yes or no?
  • Sponge, puff or brush applicator?
  • High-end powder or budget-friendly powder?
  • Yellow “banana” powders — yes or no?
  • Glowing or matte finish?
  • More powder or less?

Loose or pressed?

Pressed, but only if it’s MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural; otherwise, loose…because I think they look more natural on my skin.

Translucent or tinted?

Li’l bit of tint please, but not full coverage, because I think it looks too heavy on my pores.

Mineral or non-mineral powder?

Hmm… Mineral powders tend to look thicker than non-mineral on my skin, so non-mineral.

Baking with powder — yes or no?

No thank you. I’m going to give this one a hard pass.

Sponge, puff or brush applicator?

Brush, baby!

High-end powder or budget-friendly powder?

There are so many great ones among both, but I’ll go with high-end because they just seem to have that little extra something-something. But I use and like both budget and pricey powders.

Yellow “banana” powders — yes or no?

Ya know, I feel like it’s just an extra step, so it’s a no for this gal!

Glowing or matte finish?

Glowing for real life and matte for pics.

More powder or less?

My “wizened” skin and face say less.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Happy Wednesday! ?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 674

April 19th, 2021 by Karen 25 Comments

you have so much to look forward to
Stay strong, my friend. You’ve got this!

    1. Soup, salad or a sandwich?

A lovely salad for lunch today would be great! If a mysterious lunch benefactor were to hook this lady up with a Tostada salad from Blue Barn, I’d be most grateful. I sure do love those things, but I do not love them being $20.

    2. A sound you sometimes hear in your neighborhood?

“BRGL! BRGL! BRGL” Dozens of huge wild turkeys roam our neighborhood, and I hear them gobbling outside all day long. They’re so loud!

    3. A piece of makeup you like?

I always end up going back to Clinique’s Pretty Easy Liner felt tip liquid liner. It really is the easiest black liquid liner to use.

    4. Banana or grapefruit?

Grapefruit, but only if it’s juicy and cold (no room temperature grapefruit for this gal).

    5. Cotton or silk?

Cotton, since my life is too messy right now for silk.

    6. One of your hobbies?

Baking, although I haven’t had any grand ambitions to make anything too complicated over the last six months. I enjoy cookies and bars and that’s about it. But I think I’ll eventually get back to the place where doing a three-layer cake and frosting from scratch will feel good again… Maybe once life feels completely steady and even again. Hopefully soon.

    7. Makeup setting spray or clear brow gel?

    Clear brow gel, no question!

    8. Would you rather have professional help with your hair, your skin or your makeup?

I’ll happily accept assistance in all three categories, please. HAHAHA!

    9. Hair mask or face mask?

A rich hair mask would be lovely!

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

    1. Soup, salad or a sandwich?
    2. A sound you sometimes hear in your neighborhood?
    3. A piece of makeup you like?

    7. Makeup setting spray or clear brow gel?
    8. Would you rather have professional help with your hair, your skin or your makeup?
    9. Hair mask or face mask?

P.P.S. Hello, sweet friend. Today will be is a good day, and, FYI, you’re cherished and you’re loved! Please take some time to celebrate your accomplishments this week, OK? Even the ones that seem teeny-tiny, because whenever you accomplish something it’s a big deal. YOU DID IT. ?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 655

April 18th, 2021 by Karen 6 Comments

Aloha nui loa, Mom and Dad! Today is my mother-in-law and father-in-law’s fiftieth anniversary!

5-0.

They met while working together at an Avis Rent-a-car in Waikiki. She was born and raised there on the island of Oahu, a 20-something young woman who loved to sing and surf. At the time, she was washing rental cars on Kalākaua Avenue to pay the rent. He was a California boy from the mainland who moved to Oahu from Reno, Nevada, where he was working as a keno writer when he hit a small jackpot on a keno ticket one night after work. The winnings were just enough to pay for two one-way tickets to Hawaii for him and a buddy. This was the 1960s, and when the money ran out, his buddy returned home, but my father-in-law still wanted to stay in Hawaii. Problem was, he needed a job, so he got one at the same Avis Rent-a-car in Waikiki.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

As you know, Tabs was a lover, not a fighter. He was such a romantic, and he loved anniversaries. We met when he was a few years old (we were never completely sure of his age), and we celebrated 13 wonderful years of together.

He was the cat love of my life…

Rosie

Rosie and I met when she was about 10, we think. She was a foster cat, and she was looking for a new career/forever home when she and I met. She doesn’t really discuss her former life, but I believe she’s also a romantic…

When you look at her, you can just tell.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
