Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 432

January 15th, 2017 by Karen 3 Comments

Don’t get it twisted. Just because Tabs is a senior tabby doesn’t mean he’s lost his mojo. He’s just as sexy today as he was 10 years ago. I witness it on a daily basis.

When he wants to turn on the charm, like when he’s begging for food, he sits there so sensually… I think, dayuuum, dude! — if you were out on the prowl, all the lady cats would be up in your mix.

Question for My Makeup-Loving Friends: Are You an Artsy Person?

January 13th, 2017 by Karen 18 Comments

cat ladies pens

I’m curious, because I’ve heard a lot of people compare makeup to painting, and I loved art class in elementary and high school (I stopped in college because I was too busy taking boring sh*t like organic chemistry, ugh).

Especially makeup artists. I’ve heard that a lot — that they were one of the “art kids,” and they were into painting and drawing, so they got into makeup because it was a natural extension of that.

rainbow eyes

Do you have an artistic background? Because I don’t really. I mean, I like doodling and drawing logos and designs for connorclaire.com, and I played musical instruments as a kid, but I haven’t taken serious painting or drawing classes or anything like that as an adult.

I’ve always just liked applying makeup, and when I’d see a makeup look somewhere that I liked, I’d try to figure out how to do it on my own.

adult coloring books bike

It’s funny, but have you ever noticed how much paint brushes look like makeup brushes? I remember going into an art store after I was really getting into makeup and having an aha! moment. “Oh! This brush looks like the flat brush I use to pack color on my lids, and this one looks like a tapered blending brush for diffusing color!” It makes perfect sense in hindsight.

Fellow makeup lovers, do you happen to have an art background? Inquiring minds want to know.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF! 🙂

January #mbbinstachallenge Look 1 (Week of Jan. 9-15): Minimalist Skin and Bright Pink Lips

January 11th, 2017 by Karen 12 Comments

#mbbinstachallege!

Happy hump day! OK, here’s my second look for week #1 of the #mbbinstachallenge using the same idea of a bold, colorful element on super clean skin. Lots of you are participating, and I love what you’re coming up with!

In the look I did on Monday, it felt super weird to see myself in bright eye makeup with absolutely no color on my cheeks, but it feels TEN TIMES weirder to wear bright lips today without color anywhere else on my face.

Maybe that’s because when I normally do wear a bold lip, I’m usually also glammed up?

I dunno…

But I do know that when I look at these pics, the lips REALLY STAND OUT. All I see are lips, lips, lips! ???

instagram challenge pink lips original inspo
The pic I used for inspiration…

The model in the pic above looks like she’s wearing a bright pink lipstick outlined with a slightly darker liner. I wanted a similar vibe, so I went with MAC Candy Yum Yum and NARS Costa Smeralda Velvet Lip Liner, and I kept the liner purposefully un-blended to help it show up brighter in pics.

Also, it looks like this model isn’t wearing any foundation or concealer or mascara, or really anything at all, but your girl doesn’t roll like that, LOL! Oh, hell no. I had to put on a little something, so I used Make Up For Ever Smoothing Primer, and then a little bit of Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum before setting everything with MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural.

I’m getting so many ideas from your looks so far!

I love how precise @jewelia13’s bright lip are…

Taking part in the #mbbinstachallenge, issued by the lovely and talented Karen of "Makeup and Beauty Blog"! This week's challenge is "a look with a single bold, colorful element", which I accomplished by using Lip Ink's "Energy Red" on my top lip (lwith Urban Decay's "Mrs. Mia Wallace" lip liner) and Tattoo Junkee's "Riot" on my lower lip (with Urban Decay's "Big Bang" lip liner) for a look inspired by Mila Kunis' makeup in "Jupiter Ascending"! #mondaymotivation #selfie #boldlip #tattoojunkee #urbandecay #lipink #energyred #bigbang #greeneyes #charlottetilbury #shorthair #pixiecut #jupiterascending #instagramchallenge

And the glossy finish on this purple eye by @cosmetopiadigest is GORGEOUS.

Look 1 of the #mbbinstachallenge, hosted by @karenmbb, is a "bold, colourful element". I stepped out of my neutral comfort zone and used the @katvondbeauty Metal Matte #eyeshadowpalette – shades Nebula, Velour, and Glitz. As a rule, I'm iffy about bold shades, but I have sinusitis and can't go out, so I figured that this challenge was the right motivation, and the bright shades have cheered me up no end, despite the watery eyes. Do you have this palette? It has sold out online, but launched in Sephora Dubai recently and my Mum treated me to it before Christmas. Review coming soon.

This hot pink hotness by @niteowlchef makes me smile. 🙂 (Seriously, I have got to wear hot pink shadow more often.)

And Efrain’s double-stacked liner here is making me long for summer parties!!!

Estoy haciendo el desafío de Karen de Makeup and Beauty Blog, esta semana se trataba de hacer un look con un elemento vibrante y la piel natural / I'm doing @karenmbb #mbbinstachallenge this week was a bold element on clean skin. I used for skin @lorealmakeup Pro matte foundation in 107 as spot concealer, for my under eye I mixed it with @maccosmetics Lustre drops in Sun rush, my foundation was @natura.mexico tinted moisturizer and my powder was @citycolorcosmetics HD powder. For eyes I started with a nude pencil from Oriflame and use a green eyeshadow as first liner and @sleekmakeup Lantern blush from the Pumpkin trio as second liner; for brows I used L'Oréal Brow artist in Medium dark. Last for lips I used Sierra bees Lip shimmer in Pink. It takes a village to look this natural #nofilter #guyswithmakeup #cateye #brightcolors #makeup #slay #guymakeup

January #mbbinstachallenge Look 1 (Week of Jan. 9-15): My Take on Matte Bright Blue Liner With Super Clean Skin and Nude, Glossy Lips

January 9th, 2017 by Karen 11 Comments

mac blue peep fluidline
The first look is something with a bold, colorful element on super clean skin #mbbinstachallenge

Kinda springy, yeah?

Here was my original inspiration for this week’s #mbbinstachallenge look, and you don’t have to copy this. You can do anything you want based on the idea of a bold, colorful element on super clean skin.

instagram challenge blue liner original inspiration
Matte bright blue

I used an old MAC fave called Blue Peep Fluidline for the eye makeup (it’s perm!), but I did a slightly more exaggerated blue wing.

In the inspiration pic I used, it looks like the artist concentrated mascara in the middle of the models’ upper lash lines, so I added a couple extra coats in that area on my lashes, too.

The models look like they’re wearing a bronzed nude-ish pink gloss, so I grabbed another old-school MAC fave of mine, Viva Glam V Lipglass.

mac blue peep fluidline
The eye makeup is MAC Fluidline in Blue Peep and the lips are MAC Viva Glam V Lipglass

It feels a little weird to wear absolutely no color on my cheeks, since I’m always wearing a little something, like at least a touch of blush, highlighter or bronzer, but I definitely like how the absence of color everywhere else on my face makes the eye makeup pop.

Someone on Instagram asked if they could just post an eye shot or a lip shot for the challenge, and yes, of course! — that’s totally fine! You can do as few or as many looks as you want, but please don’t forget to use #mbbinstachallenge and tag me on Instagram @karenmbb so I can find you and see your looks.

Ooh! Here’s the gorgeous look Jaclyn @strongfemininity did…

Repost of @strongfemininity's #mbbinstachallenge pic. OK, now I need to try purple brows! ? ・・・ ?Warning: makeup talk. ? I'm doing the #mbbinstachallenge with Karen from the Makeup and Beauty blog!!! This week the challenge is to do a makeup look with 1 bright color element + clean skin (I guess that means no blush?). I cheated and did 2 colors because otherwise I think neutral lips look really weird on me. ? This challenge was the perfect excuse to try colorful eyebrows. I used a dark purple eyeshadow powder from #Maybelline then topped it with some purple #Avon lipstick I have. Then, since I can't let a good thing go, I used the purple lipstick as eyeliner for a long wing. I also have hot pink Avon lip stain on my lips because I'm the boss of me. Foundation is #Fitme by Mabelline and #neutrogena mineral powder. Filter is #clarendon. ? Then I posed in my curtains because that's not weird, you're weird. The end. Back to our normally scheduled lifting program. ?

And Lily @itsmrsspurgeon looks amazing with her makeup and hair!

If you are not following @karenmbb and her amazing blog, Makeup and Beauty Blog, then you are not living! She's doing #mbbinstachallenge , challenging her followers to get out of their beauty routines and do something different. Today is one bold element to your makeup look.. can you guess mine? (BTW my hair is a little darker because I went purple.) #mbbinstachallenge

To participate

  1. Any day during each week, do your own interpreation of that week’s look, and take a picture of it with your phone or other camera.
  2. Post the pic on Instagram! — and be sure to include #mbbinstamakeupchallenge, and you can also tag me at @karenmbb. That way we can search and find each other!
  3. And if you aren’t on Instagram, leave a comment on this post and a link to your makeup picture.

DISCLAIMER: this is not a judgy, serious, instense or stressful competition. This is strictly for fun and to get out of our makeup comfort zones a little, which is why I threw a couple of wackier looks into the mix. For me, it’s easy to always fall back on the same looks ALL THE TIME, so this is just an excuse to have fun and try new things.

Don’t be afraid to completely fail. No matter what (seriously), at least you’ll be able to say that you did something different and expressed yourself creatively. No big deal. Plus, it’s just makeup. It’s not a permanent commitment or anything. 🙂

Reeeeeeeeally excited about roasted vegetables

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 457

January 9th, 2017 by Karen 29 Comments

Happy Monday

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past NINE (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine. 🙂

1. What was the last really interesting conversation you had?

It was on Saturday with my friend Alis at Fox + Stone salon. While coloring my hair and cutting my bangs, she dropped some big news on me. She was finally moving to Vegas where her fiancé lives, which she’d been planning for and talking about for a long time, and she was literally doing it that weekend! Like, they had just packed up the U-Haul and were hitting the road the second she finished cutting my hair.

We’ve known each other for years now, and we talked about how when you’re younger, it’s easier to make bold moves because you’re used to things changing in your life. It seems like from one year to the next, or from one month to the next, you have to get used to your daily patterns changing, and your life changing, but as you move into your 30s and 40s and beyond, it becomes harder to make those kinds of big changes, for a variety of reasons.

But she was finally doing it! I mean, of course I’m gonna miss her because she’s my friend, but she also gets my hair, and it’s hard to find people you can trust who also get your hair.

2. What’s a sound that reminds you of home?

There’s a church a few blocks from here with church bells that sound twice a day — once at noon and once at six o’clock — and no matter where I am in the house, whether it’s in my office or downstairs in the living room, I can always hear those church bells.

So whenever I hear church bells, it reminds me of home.

3. Have you ever felt like an outsider?

Oh, sure. And it’s never fun. One long stretch was when I was a senior in college and living with roommates. We were all girls, and I’d previously gotten along with them, but people change, and we started doing our own things apart. I didn’t really hang out with them as much as I used to, but they kept getting closer to each other. I really got to feeling like the outsider, and I basically lived like that for a year.

I’ve also felt like an outsider at some beauty events, for sure. There always the super glamorous girls with their clicks of friends, but I just kind of do my own thing and try to make friends along the way.

4. Are you more of a back sleeper, a tummy sleeper or a side sleeper?

I usually fall asleep on my back and stay that way for most of the night until morning, when I’m half awake or half asleep, and I wiggle around and sleep on either my side or my stomach.

So, all three. 🙂

5. Walk me through how you usually style your hair.

If you’re one of those people who can just step out of the shower and comb or brush your hair, can I just say that I’m so jealous? — because my process is entirely too complicated.

It starts right after I wash and condition my hair. First, I towel dry it, then grab a flat brush and my really, really old first-gen T3 hairdryer. Then, I blow dry my bangs straight, because if I don’t do it right after I get out of the shower, they dry funny, poof up and look really ridiculous.

So, I do that, then run the brush through the rest of my hair and let it air dry, and I usually do this at night because I’m a night shower-er.

The next morning, I run the brush through my hair again to take out any knots. Then, I take a GHD curling iron, which are kind of expensive, but I think they’re really and truly the best, and I separate and part my hair into sections.

I part it right down the middle in the back, and then I do the left side first, section by section, curling the pieces, and then the right side. When it’s all done, I run my fingers through it and apply a little bit of styling cream or styling oil. Today I used the Shu Uemura oil from the mid-shaft to the ends to smooth down any frizzies.

Break in the storm

After a few days of pretty heavy rain, it looks like a brief break in the storm today, so I’m looking forward to getting some fresh air outside on a quick walk around the circle with Connor Claire.

Wherever you are, I hope you’re able to get outside for a little bit.

It’s Monday again and, as usual, I feel overwhelmed by my to-do list.

Big sigh…

But we can do this. I know we can. Have a great day today, my friend, and I’ll try to have one too. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy and paste…

1. What was the last really interesting conversation you had?
2. What’s a sound that reminds you of home?
3. Have you ever felt like an outsider?
4. Are you more of a back sleeper, tummy sleeper or side sleeper?
5. Walk me through how you usually style your hair.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 431

Tabs and Novato's first big winter storm of 2017

I forgot where it was that I heard or read this (I think it was a meme), but what is it up with cats and storms? It’s like they love and hate them.

We’ve been having some stormy weather since last night with heavy rain and high winds, and on the one hand/paw, Tabs seems terrified when the rain is coming down in buckets, and the wind is howling and blowing water into the windows like a fire hose. On the other hand, he loves it.

He alternates between cowering under his cat tower, and staring outside from his window perch to get a better view.

Tabs and Novato's first big winter storm of 2017

As much as he seems afraid of the storm, he can’t resist wanting to be out there in it.

Tabs and Novato's first big winter storm of 2017

It’s like he craves the excitement, and he wants the storm to keep getting bigger and bigger. Even though it terrifies him!

Cats.

Why Is It So Hard to Make New Friends as an Adult?

January 6th, 2017 by Karen 57 Comments

Or is that just something with me? I dunno… I think it might be one of those things that you just don’t realize until you actually get to that point, and then one day you’re sitting around thinking, “I wish I had somebody to go to Safeway with me to get some fried chicken,” but you can’t think of anybody to call.

I mean, you guys are my friends, obviously, but it’s not like I can call you up in the middle of the afternoon, because a lot of you live halfway across the country or halfway around the world. It would be kinda hard for you to go with me to Safeway to get some fried chicken.

The big thing for me is that I don’t interact with a lot of people outside the house. I work from home, so I’m mostly in the house. You know, I go to my exercise class, but it’s not like I have a social group thing to go to every week or a set meeting like a book club.

I guess I could get involved in something like that in my town…

Looking down at one of my favorite Kauai beaches, Hideaways on the North Shore, and thinking ’bout life

I try to make friends, though, and I have met friends through the blog, like last week I met with one of the girls who reads here, Shakun (hi, Shakun!). I found out that we both live in Novato, so we met for coffee, and it was really super cool. We were actually talking about this very topic, why it’s so difficult to make new friends as an adult.

I mean, I know that it’s not equally hard for everybody, but I think that people do generally just get really busy, busier with their lives, and set in their ways too, as they get older. It’s not the same as it was when you were a teenager or in college when you could easily spend that extra hour or two to go to the mall with a friend to help her find an outfit for Friday night.

Nowadays, with those two hours, I think, my gosh! — I could be cleaning my house or doing any number of other things that need to get done.

I’m a very social person. I’m not antisocial at all, and I know that it’s better for me mentally to have a circle of friends. I’ve also read different studies about how with women, especially, it helps to have a circle of friends.

I was wondering if you’ve run into this issue, and if you have, what are some things you’ve done to expand your social circle as you’ve gotten older?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
