Does What You Eat Have a Noticeable Effect on Your Skin?

January 5th, 2017 by Karen 40 Comments

green juice k final
Green juice time!

Well, yeah, if I eat five pounds of fried chicken, my skin will definitely not look the same as it does when I eat lots of vegetables and fruit and food that isn’t oily.

There’s a HUGE difference, and I notice it right away. The biggest difference for me is when I get enough veggies and fruit — basically, enough fiber and food that isn’t processed or fried.

The healthier I eat (and the more water I drink throughout the day), the better my body feels, and the better my skin looks. It’s dewier, and my fine lines aren’t as…fine-liney. My skin also looks smoother.

One thing I’ve been doing a lot lately is drinking green juices, which are mostly veggies and water, so they aren’t as high in sugar as pure fruit juices. I’m about to make one now. 🙂

I just blend a whole bunch of veggies, some fruit and water (pretty much, whatever I have around, but usually a combination of spinach, kale, cucumber, pineapple and pear, with a squeeze a lemon to cut down the grassy taste), and when I have one of those consistently and don’t eat as many cookies or as much popcorn and junk food, my skin glows.

I also notice that when I eat a lot of salty foods like chips and French fries, my body feels gross, and my face will look bloated.

I don’t really have any food allergies that I know of, except for occasionally in the fall when my regular allergies are out of control. Sometimes in the fall I’ll get hives when I eat dishes with fresh herbs in them, but it’s hit or miss, and I’ve never pegged it to the specific herbs, so I have no idea which ones are responsible.

I did go to an allergist once, but it wasn’t to test for food allergies. It was for sinus allergies, and they did a skin test, which basically determined that I was allergic to everything — all of nature. LOL!

How about you? Do you notice a difference in your skin when you eat certain foods? And does a certain kind of diet make your skin better or worse?

What’s the Longest You’ve Gone Without Washing Your Makeup Brushes?

January 4th, 2017 by Karen 20 Comments

So fresh and so clean, clean…

Oh, boy. Hmm… A month? Granted, I wasn’t doing a lot of crazy, complicated looks with brights at the time, just simple washes of neutral color, so I could get away with using eye brushes that weren’t exactly pristine, LOL!

But yeah, it was about a month, give or take a week or two. I did swipe them and wipe them down with paper towels to remove as much of whatever former product was on them, but mainly I just took into account that they still had leftover color on them in whatever look I was doing.

Eventually, though, when I completely ran out of even arguably, questionably, remotely clean brushes and was forced to wash them all, girl, it took FOREVER. I was in that bathroom washing brushes for what felt like years! I think I finished an audiobook, haha.

How about you? What’s the longest you’ve gone without washing your makeup brushes?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 456

January 2nd, 2017 by Karen 27 Comments

Saw these at DSW the other day on sale for $12 after my $5 coupon! I didn’t get them at the time, but now I’m wondering if I should go back and adopt them…

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past NINE (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine. 🙂

1. What did you do for your makeup on the first day of the year?

Instagram brows.

Just kidding. 🙂

I went to early brunch in the city yesterday, so I didn’t go all out. I did sort of a modified version of my usual, with primer, an Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick (which is so bomb), and I set it all with Clinique Uplighting Illuminating Powder, which has a bit of shimmer, and you can use it as a highlighter all over your face.

Then, I did an entirely too complicated cheek routine. I applied Kjær Weis Cream Blush, then a little Make Up For Ever Pro Light Fusion Highlighter and a touch of MAC Gingerly Sheertone Blush on top of that.

For my eyes I used the Chanel Tissé Poésie Quad, because there’s a golden taupe in there that I love.

Then I tightlined with Chanel 88 Noir Intense, added a layer of NARS Audacious Mascara on my upper lashes (I didn’t bother with the lower lashes because I was in a hurry), and used MAC Brun Eye Shadow on my brows.

I went with NARS Audacious Lipstick in Apoline for my lips, and then I finished with a little bit of NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer in Macadamia underneath my eyes.

Hmm… It looks like a big deal now that I’ve typed everything down, but it didn’t take long to do. I think it took about 15 minutes.

2. What’s one of your goals this year?

I really want to make myself more accountable for finishing projects. I start a lot of them that I don’t finish, so I’m gonna attack it old school.

My goal for the next eight weeks is to eat healthy, but if I bite off more than I can chew and set a goal for like six months, I think it’ll be overwhelming.

But I think I can handle eight weeks. To track my progress, I’m going to print out a monthly calendar and put a little star sticker on each day that I eat healthy, and for every ‘x’ amount of stars, I’m going to reward myself with something, because let’s get real… For self-motivating myself, bribery works.

3. What two eyeshadow brushes do you use the most?

I use a fluffy domed brush like the MAC 217 and a tapered blending brush like the MAC 224.

They aren’t necessarily always those two specific brushes, but I like those shapes.

I like dense domed brushes for precisely putting color exactly where I want it on my limited lid space, and also for feathering out the edges.

Both of those brushes are my go-tos.

4. Your current favorite YouTube channel?

This is probably because I’ve been thinking about eating healthy…but I’ve been watching a lot of a channel called Fit Men Cook.

It’s great! It’s this guy in Texas named Kevin, and he does lots of easy, healthy meals using ingredients that are easy to find. And he’s a character.

Plus, his recipes are usually also things that El Hub likes.

5. What are your top two Make Up For Ever products?

Now that I think about it…I use a lot of MUFE products, but my top two are the Step 1 Skin Equalizer Primer (the one in the dark grey tube). I use that almost every day. And I also use their Mist & Fix Setting Spray almost on the daily.

Coffee makers?

Can you recommend a good one? — because the one I have is driving me bananas. Every morning it makes me swear under my breath (or, not under my breath), but it was a gift, and I feel kind of guilty about not liking it…but I can’t take it anymore.

It’s a five-cup Black & Decker. First, it doesn’t shut off automatically when I remove the pot while it’s brewing, so if I forget and just grab it, coffee pours onto the machine and the counter. With this one, you’re supposed to wait until it finishes brewing, but I didn’t have to wait with my old one. It would just stop when I pulled out the pot.

And it doesn’t matter how careful I am, there’s something about that pot… It literally dumps coffee.

Anywho…

Today is sort of a holiday last hurrah around here, and I’m kind of melancholy about it. It feels like we’ve been in holiday mode for the past two months since Halloween, doesn’t it? I’m a little sad to see the holidays end, but I’m also ready for a new beginning.

How are you doing today? I hope your 2017 gets off to a fantastic, fabulous, epic start.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 430

January 1st, 2017 by Karen 6 Comments

Tabs didn’t waste a minute before he started enforcing his new healthy 2017 workout and nutrition regimen for Team MBB. No, sir. Every member of the team has to do their part. Of course, as supervisory tabby, his exertion is more figurative than literal. He doesn’t break a sweat, but he still takes his managerial responsibilities very seriously.

This morning we all worked out to a brutal 1,000-calorie HIIT YouTube workout video by Christine Salus, and Tabs made sure everyone kept pace.

He was all business. He didn’t allow any slacking.

How Important Is Color Correcting to You?

December 28th, 2016 by Karen 15 Comments

make up for ever primers
Mix and match your primers!

I don’t really have many areas that I feel would benefit from me doing a separate color-correcting step. The main area for me is under my eyes, so it depends on the person. It’s not something I do every day, just because I’m usually going for the natural look these days and I don’t want to be puttin’ on layer upon layer of makeup, so I’d say that it’s moderately important to me.

Sometimes when my dark circles are particularly dark, I will color correct them first with a peach/orange primer, then set it with powder, and then I’ll top it with a concealer in a shade that’s closer to my natural skin tone. I’ll do this because my dark circles are a purplish blue, and if I just go directly on top of them with a yellow-based concealer, they can look grayish (especially in pics).

But the orange corrector cancels out the blue, so that when I put my concealer on top, it looks natural.

There are other kinds of color-correcting products, too, and they can make a huge difference. In one of the free Sephora Beauty Classes I went to (you should totally go!), the model was very fair-skinned and had red spots on her cheeks, so the teacher used a green corrector to cancel out the red before she applied foundation and concealer on top.

It looked amazing. I couldn’t even tell there’d been any red on the model’s skin at all.

Here’s a rundown of my current skin care/skin prep/makeup process, except that my current concealer regimen has changed a little. Now I use either Sephora Future Gel Serum Concealer by itself if I don’t do any separate color correcting (the shade I use already has a subtle peachy tone), or Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Concealer if I feel like going the extra mile and doing more robust color correcting, because of the two shades that I use, one has an orange tint for correcting my purplish blue dark circles.

I set whichever one I use with NARS Translucent Crystal Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder. And here are some additional tips on how I use color correcting primers in general.

For me, it’s mostly a step I’ll do when I’m doing a full-on makeup look. It’s not something I do every day, but I’m curious. Is color correcting part of your regular makeup routine, or is it a once-in-a-while thing for you?

What Do You Think About Bobbi Brown Leaving Bobbi Brown?

December 27th, 2016 by Karen 27 Comments

Interview with Bobbi Brown

It’s so weird to utter that sentence.

I was shocked when I heard the news. I don’t know a ton about why she left or what she’s doing next, but I’m sure that whatever it is, it’s going to be amazing, because Bobbi does amazing things.

I interviewed her over the phone a few years ago, and I’ll never forget what she said about the importance of diet to good skin.

I’m hoping that the brand maintains her aesthetic for the line because I’ve always liked Bobbi Brown, and I like that kind of makeup style, that idea of accentuating your features, rather than drawing attention to the makeup. That’s always appealed to me on some level and, as I get older, it appeals to me even more.

I hope the brand stays true to her vision.

OMG! — and I hope that nothing happens to her Art Sticks — the ones that look like vibrant, chubby crayons. They last a long time and never make my lips feel dry.

Or her long-wearing potted cream shadows. Those are AMAZING. You pat a bit on your lids, smudge it out, and you’re freaking done. That’s it. They also work well as bases for other eyeshadows.

What are your favorites from Bobbi Brown? And what do you think about her stepping down? Did it shock you as much as it shocked me?

Karen

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 455

December 26th, 2016 by Karen 22 Comments

All I plan to wear today: Kjer Weis Cream Blush in Sun Touched, Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum Concealers in 12 and 10, and NARS Audacious Mascara

So..what is the Monday Poll?

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past NINE (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine. 🙂

1. What was the last TV show you marathoned?

It was The OA on Netflix. I marathoned the whole first season in like two days.

It’s a kind of kookie crazy, really weird, creative sci-fi show, and there are just so many concepts and things in it that I’ve never seen before…

Let’s just say that modern dance may be able to save the world. It’s possible. That’s all I’m saying.

2. What are you doing today?

Hopefully, recovering. I need to recover from the last two days, so I want to sit on my couch, play on my phone, and watch a couple of movies.

There are a few chores I want to do, cleaning up and stuff, but I intend to fritter most of the day away. I could use the downtime.

3. Who is the sexiest tabby you know?

Oh, you know the answer to this. Do I even have to say it? 🙂

4. Favorite George Michael song (RIP, George)?

Freedom, because every time I left a job I didn’t like, or got out of a sh*tty relationship, I would blast that song and walk down the streets of suburbia pretending that I was Naomi Campbell in that video.

George Michael was part of the soundtrack of my youth. 🙁

5. Did you get any makeup for Christmas?

I got zip in terms of makeup for Christmas, but that could be because I have makeup literally coming out of my pockets.

I might stop by the Chanel counter this week because I need to get a couple of “staples” (“staples,” she said in quotes), like 88 Noir Intense. I’m running low. And, while I’m there, perhaps something else will accidentally fall into my hot little hands.

Did you cook anything yesterday?

If you did, how did it turn out? I made Coq au Vin, and somebody said, “The chicken is purple.”

Tabs the Cat, Christmas 2016

The gifts have been unwrapped, the guests have all gone home, and the house is finally quiet. Now I’m sitting here admiring the tree ? with my favorite gentleman tabby while sipping a cup of tea and listening to the crackling of the Netflix yule log ? on TV.

It was a good Christmas for Tabs. He seemed relieved when we left him in command of the house yesterday afternoon while we went to visit my parents in the East Bay. Honestly, I think he cherished the alone time, because when we got back home this morning and he saw that we brought back Connor, Tabs had a familiar look on his face that said, “Oh, I see you brought her back… Great.”
