A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway
Win a $50 eGift card from Sephora
A circus cat entertaining patrons in front of a Sephora store in Paris

I can’t believe it took him five years to tell me!

Five years I’ve been making his gravy, arranging his travel, rubbing his tum, and now, only NOW do I find out that Tabs worked for Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas before we met?

Apparently, it’s something only the cats and humans in his “inner circle” know about… What am I, chopped liver?

I only found out this morning as I was finalizing the details of his Vegas trip at the end of October and saw a note on his calendar that read, “gst apprnce at Cirque” [guest appearance at Cirque] and asked him about it.

“What’s this thing about Cirque?”

“Mrrrow…”

“What?! You performed with Cirque du Soleil? Why haven’t you mentioned it before?”

“Meow…”

“What does that even mean, ‘need to know basis’? I’m your assistant, Tabs. I need to know about things that pertain to your career. That is, if you want me to do a good job.”

On the October trip, he’ll be giving a private Cirque show for his fans before hosting a fancy party for VIPS/celebs/famous cats at the MGM Grand.

Beyond making the travel arrangements, I’m also supposed to coordinate the security detail, which is gonna be a b*tch. Seriously, if you thought Prince Harry was a party animal, you’ve never partied with Tabs.

You know, sometimes this job is a bear. Pet assisting for a world-renowned plus-size kitty supermodel sure is tough, but you know what’s easy? Entering to win today’s $50 Sephora eCard giveaway. 🙂

What folks are saying…

“Hi Karen. Oh my goodness! I can’t believe I won! :O Thank you so much! You, Tabs, and your blog are amazing! Thank you for keeping me updated on all things beauty and more importantly, for keeping me entertained! Keep doing your thing! Thank you again.”
-Jacqueline

“Thanks so much, Karen. Just in case you were wondering what I got with it, I decided to go with the Clarisonic Mia–I’ve been wanting it for years now, but have never purchased it because of the price. Your eCard helped me finally buy it! I look forward to using it. Thanks again!”
-Jane

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. 🙂 I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.”
-Angel

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!”
-Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)

“Never before have I been so pleased to check my email right before bed!!! Thank you so, so much! I truly enjoy your blog and check it almost daily! Thanks again! This made my night!”
-Melissa, Edmond, OK

“Hi Karen. Thank you so much, I’m so excited, I’ve never won anything before. My name is Hana … I just turned 25 (today is my birthday!) Yay! Thank you.”
-Hana

The New LORAC Pro Powder Cheek Stains and Wednesday Greetings

August 22nd, 2012 by Karen 87 Comments

LORAC PRO Powder Cheek Stain closed
The new LORAC Pro Blushes, $20 each; available now at Sephora

I sat down this morning intending to dish about the new LORAC Pro Powder Cheek Stains (5-second overview: fan-frickin’-tastic! Super pigmented, and yet easy to blend and surprisingly natural looking for something with an 8-hour wear time), but I just haven’t been able to concentrate…

LORAC PRO Powder Cheek Stain open
All five of the new LORAC Pro Powder Cheek Stains clockwise from the lower left: Coral Crush, Petal Pink, Plum Passion, Rosy Glow and Ruby Rouge

My mind keeps wandering thousands of miles away…to my mom. She and my dad are visiting family in the Philippines right now, and I haven’t seen them in more than two months.

I’ve always lived within driving distance of them, so it’s weird being this far away for so long.

Me and my mom on Mother’s Day last May

Late last night Mom emailed to tell me that her mom, my grandmother, passed away over the weekend…

I posted a picture of her earlier this year. She was one of my glam grannies, the one who went to fashion school.

I didn’t know her very well because I was still a baby when my parents and I left the Philippines.

There were some letters and cards over the years, but my only clear memory of her was from the one time we met as adults. It was on a trip that my mom and I took to the Philippines in 2000.

Wow…I can’t believe that was 12 years ago.

I remember us driving out to the countryside, or “the province,” as my mom would say, and spending the afternoon with her family.

They prepared a huge lunch for us, and while we ate and chatted as best we could, with me not understanding the dialect spoken by my mom’s side of the family very well, my grandmother told us stories about my mom as a kid.

My granny was a tiny woman, small but tough, with a smile that lit up the room. When I met her, even though her face was lined with wrinkles, she was such a beauty.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 233

August 20th, 2012 by Karen 77 Comments

the makeup and beauty blog monday poll

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood: I barely slept a wink last night, but I’m doing well. It’s sunny out, I’ve got a hot cup of coffee in my claws, and Tabs has yet to lash out at me for anything (yet). All things considered, sounds like the start of a pretty good day. 🙂
  2. Quick! — what’s the first movie quote that comes to mind?
“Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”
    — The Godfather, 1972
  3. Shower or bath?
I think baths are so much more relaxing, especially in a big claw-foot tub (it has to be a crystal clean tub), but showers are quicker…and sometimes when I’m taking one I pretend like I’m washing under a tropical waterfall.
  4. Are you looking forward to any trips or treats this fall?
Vegas, baby! El Hub and I are meeting a couple of friends there at the end of October, and I fully intend to use it as an opportunity to go all crazypants with my makeup. I can’t think of a better place than Vegas to go over the top with glitter, cat eyeliner and smokey eyes.
  5. Do you have any special pictures or keepsakes at home? If you do, tell me about one of them.
There’s an old picture of me and my brother Al that I keep on my desk. It was taken at a playground one day when we were kids, and I love it because we just look like we were having the greatest time. Al has the biggest smile on his face, and whenever I see it, it reminds me not to take every little thing too seriously.
  6. I could spend all day long _________.
Sleeping (I’m not kidding; I really could).
    Reading young adult sci-fi novels.
    At the mall.
Watching reality television (sorry, but it’s true).
    Admiring Jeremy Renner’s arms (LOL!)
  7. How big is too big for hoop earrings?
Oh, I’m sure there’s a limit, but I like ’em pretty big, as long as they’re lightweight and thin. When the hoops are too heavy, they hurt my ears, ouch!
  8. What’s something your inner diva/drag queen would say?
Unless you’re also wearing a mask and wrestling boots, stay away from full-body spandex.
  9. We’re at your favorite ice cream shoppe! What can I get you?
I’ll take two scoops in a waffle cone, please. One earl grey tea, and one salted caramel (if I’m answering, we’re going to Three Twins).

And if you feel like being incredibly generous with those scoops, I won’t stop you!

  10. Weekly goals:
New makeup looks and sit-ups…not necessarily in that order, LOL!

I sure hate doing sit-ups, but they help my lower back.

Oh, and absolutely have to start getting to bed earlier. Well, not just to bed, but to sleep. My problem lately has been that I’ve been staying up past midnight reading.

Hi, sweets. 🙂 Up and at ’em. I know it’s hard to say goodbye to the weekend, but it’s only temporary.

Can I get you a cup of something? What’s your poison? Coffee, tea, hot cocoa, mimosa? How about if you fill out the Monday Poll, and I’ll be right back with something hot and caffeinated (unless you really want that mimosa… No judging).

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. Quick! — what’s the first movie quote that comes to mind?
3. Shower or bath?
4. Are you looking forward to any trips or treats this fall?
5. Do you have any special pictures or keepsakes at home?
6. I could spend all day ________.
7. How big is too big for hoop earrings?
8. What’s something your inner diva/drag queen would say?
9. We’re at your favorite ice cream shoppe! What can I get you?
10. Weekly goals:

Say it with me: “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 205

August 19th, 2012 by Karen 24 Comments

Dear Diary,

Home sweet home!

I can’t even remember how long it’s been since my last entry. I’ve just been traveling so much lately, you know, trying to stay busy.

I was in Manila this weekend on the last leg of a press junket for the new Bourne movie. My crazypants agent booked me for interviews in Milan, Paris and then Manila all within 48 hours! Total madness, but at least I was able to see my grandparents while I was in Manila. They’ve been visiting out there for a couple months.

Oh, get this: Renner is getting top billing on the Bourne movie posters. Can you believe that? I know he’s the star, but I’ve been getting rave reviews for my secret spy cat cameo.

I mean, I didn’t have to dig deep for the role. When you spend your formative kitten years fending for yourself as a stray on the mean streets of Mill Valley, you get pretty good at defending yourself.

Sure, it brought back some difficult memories…all of those cold, lonely nights without a drop of gravy in my belly, but I just channeled the emotions into my performance.

That’s what you do when you’re an A-list Hollywood kitty.

You may have heard that Renner did some of his own stunts in the movie. Well, I did all of mine. Trained like a mofo for ’em, too, so I’d get everything just right.

DO NOT try this at home, kids…

A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway
Win a $50 eGift card from Sephora

“Mrrrrow…” Tabs grumbled to himself. His nemesis, the blue kitty from the house down the hill, was already there, reaching up for what looked like the last box of Caudalie fur cream.

Blast! Tabs had been waiting for this day for weeks, the first annual Bring Your Cat to Sephora Day, and he’d planned to get to the store early, hopefully beating the other cats to the best stuff.

The details were all supposed to have been taken care of. His assistant got him up early and prepped his morning gravy, but the special fur and makeup team he’d hired for the occasion were held up in traffic on the 101.

Unbelievable. The Navy Seals of the feline fur and makeup worlds, and they get waylaid by a little traffic? It’s called problem solving, people!

Cats were everywhere in the store, snatching up all the best products. “Mrow!” Briefly, Tabs considered using brute force to wrest the box of Caudalie cream from the blue kitty’s paws, but with so many witnesses around…

Oh, well, Tabs thought to himself, there’s always next year.

* * *

Good morning, glory! 🙂 Hope your weekend got off to a great start. No complaints out here. I ended up not going to that party in the city last night. 11 p.m. was just too late for me, so I just watched some TV until I passed out.

This is random, but I just had the most amazing meyer lemon croissant. Perfectly flaky, buttery layers, and the lemony parts weren’t too sweet or heavy. It was like eating a fluffy, buttery, lemony pastry cloud…

Anywho, while I relive that awesome croissant in my daydreams, have you entered this weekend’s $50 Sephora eGift card giveaway yet? I hope you do, and don’t forget — there are two ways to win.

What Are You Wearing on Your Nails?

August 15th, 2012 by Karen 27 Comments

rgb minty swatch

I’m wearing RGB Minty on my fingers (from Popsugar’s new monthly Must-Have Bag subscription service for July) and Zoya Arizona on my toes.

How about you? What are you wearing on your nails?

G’morning, friend! 🙂 I feel 1000% better today. Oh, sweet sleep, how I love thee so…

This is probably gonna make me sound terribly “vintage,” as in the “Get off my lawn, you pesky kids!” definition of the word, but I went to bed at 8:30 last night…

Tabs was like, “What the hell, Mom?! It’s not even dark yet. I thought we had plans to party tonight ’til the break of dawn.”

Sorry, Tabby. Mommy tired.

OH! I started another book, another young adult science fiction one called Enclave, by Anne Aguirre. I read that in bed last night until I passed out.

5-second summary? BOOM! It’s the apocalypse (of course), and everyone lives underground in abandoned subway tunnels. The main character, Deuce, is a teenage girl/huntress trying to navigate her way through the world in a time of great change.

If I hadn’t been so tired I would have kept reading all night long. It’s been that good so far.

This is kinda weird, but here’s the trailer for the book (I know, trailers for books)…

The Enclave book trailer

Okay…there’s some cheese in there, and the dude looks nothing like I picture him in my head, but it gives a little taste of what the book’s about.

Anywho, I hope things are going well out there. Anything new to report? I’ve got a full tank of positive vibes over here, so if you need a refill, just holler. I’ll zap some over to you with my hands, Sookie-style. 🙂

Karen

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 232

August 13th, 2012 by Karen 78 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
    Let’s see… Is half awake a mood? Probably not, I imagine. 🙂

I’m chuggin’ along but a little sleepy because I stayed up way past my bedtime last night finishing that book I’ve been reading, Angelfall, and now I’m paying for it. Other than that, though, no complaints. All signs point to today being a great, if not groggy, day.

  2. Time for a road trip! Where are we going and who’s coming with us?
How about Southern California? One word: Disneyland! We could stop by the parks (Disney’s California Adventure is right across the street from Disneyland) and then head down to San Diego to do some surfing.

Jen and Cindy, a couple of my childhood friends, would like to come, too. Don’t worry, they’re mellow, super cool and very down-to-earth. You guys will get along famously.

Of course we also have to invite Tabs, but I suspect he’ll say no. He’s been really busy with work lately and only travels first class.

  3. Something your friends/family tease you about?
My preternatural sense of smell (seriously, I’m like a basset hound). I’m that freaky person who can smell when the neighbor three doors down is smoking a cigar on his doorstep.
  4. When you come home from a long, hard day, what’s the first thing you do when you walk through the door?
Kick off my shoes (we’re a no-shoes-in-the-house household), set down the mail, wash my hands, and then give and get kisses from El Hub and Tabs.
  5. Have you ever flown in a helicopter?
Nope, but I’ve always wanted to take one of those tours in Hawaii where they zip you around the canyons and cliffs and get up close to the volcanoes. Buuuuut, I don’t know. I’ve read one too many stories about helicopter accidents.
  6. What movie would you have liked to make a cameo appearance in?
Clueless, for sure! I would have loved being one of Cher’s friends, sitting at their table at lunch, buffing my nails and sipping a can of soda in my quintessential ’90s outfit (button-up mini skirt, over-the-knee socks, platforms, a shirt, vest and my little black backpack).
  7. It pays to be _________.
Nice. In the right place at the right time. Patient.
  8. Are you gonna watch the new Twilight?
Honestly, I really don’t want to, but at this point I feel kind of invested, LOL!

I don’t know, though… Not sure I can handle hearing the name, “Renesmee,” spoken a few hundred times on screen.

  9. Have you lost any makeup lately?
Sure have. I can’t find my jar of MAC Indianwood Paint Pot, and I’m pretty salty about it.

MAC needs to start installing little GPS trackers in their products…

  10. Weekly goals:
I’m keeping it simple again. All I want to do is get outside a little more than last week (with all the fall coverage, sometimes I forget it’s still summer), read at least an hour every day, and work my abs at least once.

G’morning, gorgeous. Hope you’re doing well on this beautiful day. 🙂

Here, let me refill your coffee… You know, I’m actually kind of hungry. Can I interest you in a chocolate croissant?

You stay here and fill out the Monday Poll, and I’ll be right back with your coffee and snack.

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. Time for a road trip! Where are we going and who’s coming with us?
3. Something your friends/family tease you about?
4. Have you ever flown in a helicopter?
5. When you come home from a long, hard day, what’s the first thing you do when you walk through the door?
6. What movie would you like to make a cameo in?
7. It pays to be _________.
8. Are you gonna watch the new Twilight?
9. Have you lost any makeup lately?
10. Weekly goals:

I will say this about Mondays: even though I’m always a little melancholy on Sunday nights, I like thinking about Mondays as a chance for a fresh start.

You have yourself a good one, okay? 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Tabs for the Topshop Chubby Glitter Stick

I guess it’s safe to discuss now that the tests are over and we’re just waiting on the results. From NASA.

Tabs the astrocatI couldn’t mention anything about it before because of a non-disclosure agreement, but Tabs is one of five feline finalists to become commander of NASA’s next mission to Mars. Yup, I went with him this weekend down to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology where they ran him and the other finalists through a barrage of tests. Gravy deprivation, zero-gravity mousing, a cat obstacle course with animatronic guard dogs, and puzzles to test problem solving skills.

He did well in the obstacle course, passed the puzzles (in one, the instructors left a door slightly ajar, and the cats were monitored to see if they could paw it open) and cleaned up in the zero-gravity mousing test, coming in first among the five kitties.

But he came in dead last in the gravy deprivation test (of course)…

I hope his overall scores were good enough to keep him in the running, though, because it’s been years since I’ve seen Tabs want something as much as he wants this. To be a part of the first feline mission to Mars would be a huge honor. Not only has Tabs always wanted to be an astrocat, but as he put it, “My being on this mission would mean so much to future feline generations.” Seeing a one-time stray cat rise to international stardom as a plus-size kitty supermodel before walking on the surface of Mars? It would send a message to millions of strays and house cats around the world that anything is possible, and not even the sky is the limit anymore.

Luckily, Tabs had a pretty light week of kitty modeling so he had time to focus on his NASA training regimen, but he did work on a few campaigns…

And here are the highlights (linger on the Maybelline ad for a second or two). 🙂
