A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway
Win a $50 eGift card from Sephora

G’morning and happy CAT-urday! It’s shaping up to be a beautiful day here in Marin County. The sun is shining, not a cloud in the sky, and I have a great big cup of coffee by my side. Hot — just like the spread Tabs did in Playcat a few years back. 🙂

I don’t have much on my plate today. Nothing exciting, at least. Just some housework, laundry (it never ends!), a workout and my grocery shopping. I’ve been totally on a cooking show kick lately, especially Giada at Home and America’s Test Kitchen, so I have all these ideas for meals I’d like to try.

I’m almost done with Angelfall, that young adult book with the fallen angels in it. Turned out to be pretty darn good. If time permits, I might also take another crack at that purple smokey eye from Make Up For Ever’s fall campaign.

Hope your weekend got off to a good start. Before you click away, have you entered this weekend’s Sephora eGift card giveaway? If you win it’s $50. Enough for a well-deserved treat.

What folks are saying…

“Hi Karen. Oh my goodness! I can’t believe I won! :O Thank you so much! You, Tabs, and your blog are amazing! Thank you for keeping me updated on all things beauty and more importantly, for keeping me entertained! Keep doing your thing! Thank you again.”
-Jacqueline

“Thanks so much, Karen. Just in case you were wondering what I got with it, I decided to go with the Clarisonic Mia–I’ve been wanting it for years now, but have never purchased it because of the price. Your eCard helped me finally buy it! I look forward to using it. Thanks again!”
-Jane

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. 🙂 I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.”
-Angel

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!”
-Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)

“Never before have I been so pleased to check my email right before bed!!! Thank you so, so much! I truly enjoy your blog and check it almost daily! Thanks again! This made my night!”
-Melissa, Edmond, OK

“Hi Karen. Thank you so much, I’m so excited, I’ve never won anything before. My name is Hana … I just turned 25 (today is my birthday!) Yay! Thank you.”

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 232

August 6th, 2012 by Karen 43 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll
I made raviolis with my friends Jen and Cindy last Saturday…

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
Relieved. I just tidied up my desk and feel functional again! When I’m surrounded by a chaotic mess, I feel like a chaotic mess, but when my space is nice and neat and clean, I’m so much happier and more productive.
  2. How would you describe your current hairdo?
It falls to about an inch below the top of my shoulders with long layers, a side part, long side-swept bangs and ombre highlights. The base color is a chocolate brown, and the highlights are caramel (Mmm… caramel).

I’m thinking about growing it out again…but we’ll see how I feel about that as it grows and starts to feel heavy later this summer.

I definitely do like having longer hair in winter, though. It’s like a natural head warmer.

  3. Are you a Bond girl/guy?
Depends on the Bond, but I gotta say, I lurves me some Daniel Craig. 🙂

I watched Casino Royale again last week and remembered why he’s my favorite Bond (sorry, Sean!). He’s got those enchanting aquamarine eyes and that “hot thug in a tuxedo” thing going on…

  4. How often do you wear concealer?
Approximately every single day, LOL! Even on weekends.
  5. Do you believe you’d make a good reality TV show judge?
Probably not. Actually, I’m pretty sure I’d suck at it. I’d be too worried about hurting someone’s feelings.
  6. How did you spend your Sunday afternoon?
I caught up on some reading (five back issues of Entertainment Weekly), and also watched Enemy of the State, with Will Smith and Gene Hackman. The DVR randomly recorded it, and I’d never seen it before. Not bad.

  7. Something you’d like to learn?
How to drive a stick shift. It’s on my list of “Skills to Have During the Zombie Apocalypse.”
  8. Do you have a signature makeup look?
Hmm… Well, I’m fickle and like to try different things, but I guess if I had to choose one, I’d go with bold eyes and nude lips.
  9. What’s for lunch today?
Hopefully a Panera salad if I can sneak out to the mall.
  10. Weekly goals:
First and foremost, smile as much as possible. 🙂 I also want to visit the Container Store and look for some simple shelving or cabinetry to organize my office. Oh, and step away from the computer by no later than 7 each night.

Hey, cutie pie! So glad to see you this morning. I hope you feel at least a little refreshed after the weekend. It always makes Mondays easier. If not…allow me to introduce you to my good friend caffeine!

Do you have a sec to say hi and fill out the Monday Poll?

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. How would you describe your current hairdo?
3. Are you a Bond girl/guy?
4. How often do you wear concealer?
5. Do you believe you’d make a good reality TV show judge?
6. How did you spend your Sunday afternoon?
7. Something you’d like to learn?
8. Do you have a signature makeup look?
9. What’s for lunch today?
10. Weekly goals:

Have a wonderful day! I hope you get some nice weather today.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 203

August 5th, 2012 by Karen 14 Comments

Tabs for the Anastasia Cat Brown Pencil

Sometimes divas need a break, ya know? It’s hard to be on all the time. That’s why it was nice to see Tabs take some much-needed time off this weekend. While I was visiting my friend Jen in San Jose yesterday, Tabs held down the fort here at home/MBB headquarters.

He made pasta, read some magazines and caught up on a ton of his favorite TV shows recorded on the DVR, like Dogs 101 and Giada at Home. He rarely gets any downtime, so he cherishes the weekends where he can just veg and do cat things, like climb trees, study mixology, surf the web for low-fat gravy recipes and practice scratching on his DJ turntable.

Heck, I can’t even remember the last time Tabs spent a full weekend just chillin’ like this at home.

I worry sometimes that he works too hard…but at least he doesn’t have a really busy week ahead of him. No international travel, which is nice, but he does have to meet with his local tech team on Wednesday to discuss an upcoming project. He’s been thinking about starting an e-commerce store catering to high-end cat clientele. I can’t reveal any details yet, but I can say that the words “Chanel cat accessories” have been tossed around.

As for me, I’m taking it easy tonight. It’s not even 9, and I’m already in my stretchy pants with a cup of Sleepytime Tea. I don’t want to miss it, but I don’t know if I’m gonna make it to see the Curiosity landing on Mars.

Oh! — almost forgot. Tabs always likes to share his kitty modeling exploits. Here are the most recent pics from his portfolio. 🙂

Win a $50 eGift card from Sephora

Greetings, gorgeous, and splendiferous salutations! Happy, happy Saturday. 🙂 In case you were wondering, no, you have not just entered Oz; however, you are about to enter this weekend’s $50 Sephora eGift card giveaway (I hope!).

Nothing new to report from out here in partly cloudy Novato, California. Been watching lots of the Olympics lately with Tabs and El Hub. The other night during one of the swimming events, it occurred to me that I jog just a wee bit faster than those swimmers swim, LOL!

Today, I’m driving down to visit my friend Jen and her little boy (My “nephew.” I’m the cool aunt.) in San Jose, which is about 70 miles from here. I’m taking Jen to the MAC counter because she wants to learn more about eye makeup.

Tabs will be holding down the fort here at MBB headquarters while I’m gone.

Oh — he has a message for you. “Meow,” which loosely translates, “Good luck in the giveaway, and have a great day.”

What folks are saying…

Clawing Your Way to the Top: Nail Art Inspired by the London Olympics

July 31st, 2012 by Karen 20 Comments

Source: The Polished Mommy

Trying to get good looks at the stylin’ manis and pedis on the female athletes at the 2012 Olympics in London is like a sport in and of itself! One minute I’m rooting for Dana Vollmer to break the world record in the 100-meter butterfly, next minute I’m screaming “Pan down! Pan down! Pan down!” at the TV to see her fierce fingers and toes.

Poor El Hub… Thank goodness I married a man with the patience to sit through my long, drawn out soliloquies on nail art and other beauty trends in international athletics, LOL!

And the athletes aren’t the only ones getting in on the action. People around the world are celebrating the London Olympics with their own gold medal-worthy manis.

Here’s a look at some of them. If you’ve seen others that you really like, please share them in the comments. 🙂

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 231

July 30th, 2012 by Karen 40 Comments

zoya fall 2012 mbb monday poll
All day, every day, all I wanna do is paint my nails…

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
Itchy! Wait — is that a mood?

I don’t know, but it might as well be, because scratching is just about the only thing on my mind. I switched fabric softeners last weekend, and I think I might be allergic to the new one, ack!

I rewashed everything last night — the bed sheets, bath towels and a lot of my clothes — and used a different detergent and fabric softener, both of them unscented.

I think it’s starting to help… The itch isn’t quite as bad as it was yesterday.

  2. Stripes or polka dots?
Polka dots! 🙂 They’re just so cheerful.
  3. What’s your go-to quickie breakfast?
Oatmeal with almond milk and sugar, which I like to call “my morning gruel.” LOL! It’s quick and easy on my tummy, and I usually have a good run when I exercise after I eat a bowl of oatmeal.
  4. Have you been watching the Olympics?
Absolutely! Last night we watched the swimming, synchronized diving and some of the women’s gymnastic semifinals.

I think the coverage has even been a little better this year. I feel like I’m seeing more stories about more athletes than usual. Some years it seems like the networks just focus on a handful of athletes. I like the long, fancy profile stories, too, but sometimes I think the hype goes a little overboard and can even influence the games.

It’s just amazing to me how much grace Olympic athletes show under such extreme pressure. They work their entire lives, and it all comes down to a single moment. It’s very inspiring.

Also, not gonna lie! — I like to see what the athletes are up to in the beauty department, like all the cute manis/pedis this year. Almost every one of the women competing in swimming and diving yesterday was sporting something special on their nails. Oh, and the gals who wear eye makeup to the pool? LOVE IT! Women after my own heart.

  5. How often do you wear bronzer?
Almost every day. I think it gives my face some warmth and helps define my cheeks.

I alternate among a few different products, but my favorites right now are Benefit Hoola, NARS Laguna, MAC Refined Golden, MAC Give Me Sun and MAC Nude on Board.

  6. Cream eyeshadows: love ’em or leave ’em?
Love ’em! No fallout, and they’re usually very easy to blend. Plus, they’re versatile. I can wear one alone or as a base for powder shadow.
  7. When was the last time you rode a Ferris wheel?
Oh, geez… It’s been a while. Maybe 2003 or 2004 at the County Fair.
  8. What would be the first sentence on page 226 of your autobiography?
“2006 was a good year — the year I discovered Nutella.”
  9. What are your three favorite places to browse for beauty products?
Sephora, Target and the MAC counter at the Northgate Mall.
  10. Weekly goals:
Just one this week — to be inspired by the Olympics and to channel that inspiration in my own way.

At the end of every day, I want to be able to say that I did my best and left nothing behind.

Good morning, friend! How goes it? I hope you had a nice weekend and were able to sneak in some meow time for yourself (it’s important!).

It’s another Monday, which means 1) we have a full week of fun ahead of us, and 2) it’s time to check in with the Monday Poll.

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. Stripes or polka dots?
3. What’s your go-to quickie breakfast?
4. Have you been watching the Olympics?
5. How often do you wear bronzer?
6. Cream eyeshadows: love ’em or leave ’em?
7. When was the last time you rode a Ferris wheel?
8. What would be the first sentence on page 226 of your autobiography?
9. What are your three favorite places to browse for beauty products?
10. Weekly goals:

It’s the last Monday of July. Let’s make it a good one. 🙂

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 202

July 29th, 2012 by Karen 31 Comments

Tabs excels at many things — really, he’s like the da Vinci of American Shorthair tabbies — but he sure could use a lesson in subtlety.

Take today’s pet poll. Tabs felt we were overdue for one, but instead of asking nicely for my help, he bit my elbow and barked, “Meow!”

Which is fussy tabby code for, “Get cracking!”

Whatev. There’s no point in arguing with him when he gets like this. It’s better to just concede. 🙂

Who is Tabs the Cat? About five years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model).

The Sundays With Tabs Sunday Pet Poll

Same idea as the Monday Poll. Just copy/paste the list below into your comment. Tabs and I love hearing about your furry and fur-less friends (he also sees it as “researching the competition”).

  1. How would you describe your pet in five words?
  2. Husky diva kitty supermodel/entrepreneur.

  3. Which Hollywood star would play your pet in a movie about his/her life?
  4. Obviously someone charming and good-looking (obviously). 🙂 And he would have to have some meat on his bones and be able to play a bit of a rough-and-tumble thug. Maybe Christopher Meloni?

  5. What’s one thing your pet does that melts your heart?
  6. When he sleeps in our bed through the night, which he rarely does. Most nights he sticks around for a few minutes of lurvies, then leaves once he gets his fill.

  7. Are there any foods your pet refuses to eat?
  8. Absolutely. In fact, he’s the only one in this family who doesn’t like Trader Joe’s.

Tabs loves to eat — sliced turkey, wheat bread (yes, wheat bread), seafood, and pretty much anything in gravy) — and he fancies himself as a bit of a feline foodie, but he cannot stand Trader Joe’s cat food. He won’t touch it.

  9. Does your pet get along with other animals?
  10. Only animals of the human variety, to which he’s very sweet, but he’s hyper-territorial around other cats.

If he so much as catches a glimpse of a cat far off in the distance, he crouches low, grumbles angrily and puffs up his tail. And if the cat approaches, Tabs takes off after it like an angry lion!

Big sigh… I’ve wanted to get Tabs a sibling for a while, but I’m afraid he’d be a bully.

  11. How does your pet feel about cosplay, or playing dress-up?
  12. Big paws up for both! He loves playing dress-up, and he has quite a wardrobe, actually. He’s particularly fond of his yellow submarine costume and shark sweater.

But his favorite outfit by far is his tweed newsboy cap, which he loves to wear on casual Fridays.

  13. Do you ever give greeting cards on behalf of your pet?
  14. LOL! Yes. In fact, Tabs just gave a birthday card to El Hub. It was one of those musical ones and had a DJ kitty rapping and scratching over a hip-hop beat.

It got a good laugh. 🙂

  15. What’s the longest you’ve spent separated from your pet?
  16. A few years ago El Hub and I spent 12 days visiting his parents in Hawaii, and it was very hard on Tabs, even though he had a pet sitter keeping him company.

He doesn’t deal with change very well…and I know he missed not having me to boss around. I missed him terribly, too.

  17. Is your pet naturally athletic?
  18. In a word, no. Let me put it this way: Tabs did not make the kitty Olympic team this year.

I’m sure he thinks of himself as sleek and graceful like a jungle cat, but he’s much more Garfield than Simba.

Back when I knew him as a stray, I would watch him walk along the top of a narrow fence behind our apartment to get to our front door, and every time, I’d hold my breath because his back legs would slip a few times along the way. He always managed to catch himself with his sharp claws, but I was always afraid he’d fall.

  • To complete the Sundays with Tabs Sunday Pet Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. How would you describe your pet in five words?
2. Which Hollywood star would play your pet in a movie about his/her life?

Win a $50 eGift card from Sephora

What’s your stance on cake for breakfast? I’m sitting here with a half a sheet of chocolate cake in front of me (leftover from a birthday party El Hub’s coworkers threw him), and truth be told, it looks a lot tastier than my usual gruel (aka oatmeal with almond milk).

It’s one of those talking cakes… You know the ones. This one is saying, “Ooh, Karen! Chocolate cake is the breakfast of champions!”

LOL! We’ll see how long my willpower lasts. I’m guessing about another five minutes, or until the coffee finishes brewing, whichever comes first.

And speaking of coffee, do you ever have coffee after dinner? I wish, WISH I could, but it would keep me up at night. If I have anything caffeinated after dinner, it’s straight to Insomnia Land for me.

Oh, but coffee with dessert is so divine, isn’t it?

Well, I guess that settles it. I’m having cake and coffee for breakfast today! 🙂

Would you like a piece? Enter this weekend’s Sephora eCard giveaway, and I’ll go get you a slice.

What folks are saying…

Do you wear different makeup on the weekends than you do during the week? Are you naturally athletic? Have you ever known an Olympic athlete? What are your favorite Olympic events? Do you prefer cake or pie? — you get the idea.
  • Second, you can enter by following me on twitter Twitter @karenmbb and retweeting (RT) the following message:
    • Follow @karenmbb and RT to Win a $50 eGift Card from Sephora! http://bit.ly/OtWx5l

  • The deadline to enter is Sunday, July 29, 2012 at 11:59PM (PT).
  • Entrants must enter using a valid email address and/or Twitter account to win.
  • A maximum of two (2) entries per person — one within the comments at the bottom of this post, and a second entry via Twitter addressed to me @karenmbb.
  • Contest is open to individuals of any country who have reached the age of majority according to their local laws (18 in the United States with these exceptions: Alabama and Nebraska, 19; Mississippi, 21).
  • Sephora eGift Certificates can only be redeemed online and are not valid in stores or available for purchase or redemption in Canada. International winners may opt to substitute the Sephora eGift card prize for $50 sent directly to their email address by PayPal instead.
  • Tabs and I (heretofore referred to as “T-Money and K-Dawg”) will select one (1) winner at random from the entries either left in the comments at the bottom of this blog post or addressed to @karenmbb on Twitter.
  • The winner will be announced here within 48 hours of the deadline.
  • Void where prohibited by law.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
