3 Lessons Learned from Getting Bangs

September 28th, 2011 by Karen 53 Comments

I’ve had other brushes with bangs, like the time my mom cut my hair into a lopsided Dorothy Hamill bowl cut, or the gravity defying ‘do I wore for a time in my hair bear teenage years (that thing ensnared more insects than a Venus Flytrap!), but none of them prepared me for the full-on blunt-cut bangs I embraced a few months ago.

And that’s because they weren’t just bangs. Dude. They were BANGS! — all caps, bold, with an exclamation mark.

I’ve liked having them these past months, but I gotta say — I wish I’d given more thought to what I was getting into before I took the plunge, because these real deal bangs have been a commitment.

For starters, there’s the monthly trims, and this is where it helps to have a stylist who does them for free. Ideally, he or she would also be someone you like to hang out with, because you’ll be visiting them often. Then there’s all of the doo-hickery involved in keeping them neat and tidy. To be blunt (ha!), there’s a lot.

So if you’re contemplating a jump to blunt, consider these three lessons I learned from getting bangs.

1. Expect to Itch

Good grief! The first week was the worst. I spent every waking moment resisting the urge to scratch my forehead and brows. It was hella annoying (coincidentally, this was when I started referring to my bangs as Lloyd Christmas), like that day I went to work in the city wearing ill-fitting underwear. I couldn’t really do anything about it at the time (going commando was not an option), so I just had to grin and bear it.

Thankfully, the itching subsided, and now Lloyd only gets on my nerves for a day or two after a trim.

What Were the Must-Have Makeup and Beauty Products When You Were Younger?

September 27th, 2011 by Karen 95 Comments

Wow, this takes me back… Among my circle of high school friends in the early ’90s, Wet ‘n’ Wild Lipsticks and their infamous 666 Lip Liner were the cat’s meow (hey, they were only a buck!), and Cornsilk pressed powder showed up a lot, too.

Sea Breeze toner, Noxzema cleanser and Buff Puffs could usually be found in my friends’ bathrooms, and the scent of Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth, Coty’s Exclamation, Cover Girl’s Navy (my personal fave) and Liz Claiborne (remember the triangle bottle?) almost always filled the air.

Our hair was usually BIG and totally defied gravity, which required massive amounts of hairspray, of course. Almost every girl I knew carried a bottle of Aqua Net in her purse, and if you had a perm (or naturally curly hair), you probably also toted around L’Oreal’s Pumping Curls.

How about you? What were the must-have makeup and beauty products when you were younger?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. What are you up to tonight? I’m off to check out Novato’s last farmers’ market of the season because I wanna get my fruit on, haaaay! 🙂

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Sept. 26

September 26th, 2011 by Karen 86 Comments

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 187. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Not too shabby, tabby. I sawed logs last night and actually feel like I’m firing on all cylinders (for once!).

  3. What are a few of your least favorite things?
  4. The smell of new plastic toys, vomiting in front of other people (ugh…), high-waisted pants, pretentious films, and chewy seafood (abalone, etc.).

  5. Today I’d love…
  6. …a pint of pistachio gelato and to get extra lurvies from Tabs.

  7. Outfit?
  8. My J. Brand 811 Jeans (they’re grafted to my body!), a black button-down sweater, a pair of yellow Seychelles wedge sandals, and a green, yellow, black and beige scarf.

  9. Exactly where are you right now?
  10. I’m sitting on the left side of my living room couch with a laptop on my lap. Degrees Minutes Seconds: N 38° 6′ 26.6652″, W 122° 34′ 11.0136″, or thereabouts.

  11. Describe your favorite jacket to wear in the fall:
  12. The Guess Metallic Faux Leather Scuba Jacket I picked up last year during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It’s in basic black, so it goes with everything. Plus, it has a high neckline that keeps out the chill when there’s a breeze.

  13. When was the last time you bounced on a pogo stick?
  14. Hmm… Really? Well, maybe 1984? I know I had one growing up, although honestly, I have no idea why my parents let me have one. Those things are dangerous!

  15. Your two cents (beauty related)?
  16. A dentist friend of mine (Mary Anne) advised me to always drink coffee, tea or red wine (highly pigmented/acidic beverages) through a straw to avoid staining your teeth. Yes, it looks goofy, especially when you’re drinking wine.

  17. Your two cents (non-beauty related)?
  18. Podcasts help pass the time when you’re working out. Lately I’ve learned about the history of casinos, genetic diversity as it pertains to bananas, baseball and songwriting.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. To dance every single day, even if it’s just to the Chipmunk’s version of 50 Cent’s Go Shorty, It’s Your Birthday in my living room.

WARNING: The following song may prompt you to throw something.

All sorts of wrong…but strangely satisfying!

I hope your week got off to a good start. No complaints on my end of the keyboard. I just finished a quick run, so I’m jacked up on endorphins right now.

Would you care for a delicious smoothie (frozen berries, vanilla yogurt and a dash of apple juice)? Have a seat, take a moment to fill out the Monday Poll, and I’ll make you one. 🙂

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. What are a few of your least favorite things?
3. Today I’d love…
4. Outfit?
5. Exactly where are you right now?
6. Describe your favorite jacket to wear in the fall.
7. When was the last time you bounced on a pogo stick?
8. Your two cents (beauty related)?
9. Your two cents (non-beauty related)?
10. Weekly goals:

Go shorty (it’s your birthday)… And have a great week! 🙂

Tabs for MAC Matchmaster Fur Foundation

I keep wanting to say “Matchmaker” every time I see MAC Matchmaster. Is that just me?

Guess who’s been busy jet-setting around the globe this week? Yup, America’s favorite playboy Tabby. He just got back from Milan. Designers, fashion houses and big beauty brands all want him waddling down runways wearing their wares, but Tabs is very picky about the jobs he’ll take. He has to believe in the creative concept behind the work; otherwise, he says he’s perfectly happy just stalking wild turkeys here at home.

This week he worked with MAC, Illamasqua, JK Jemma Kidd, Chanel and Pixi, and here’s the photographic evidence. 🙂

What’s One Makeup or Beauty Product You’d Like a Lifetime Supply Of?

September 25th, 2011 by Karen 57 Comments

Lifetime supply?

I’d have to go with Bumble & Bumble’s Super Rich Conditioner ($23 for an 8-oz. bottle; $58 for a 1-liter/34-oz. bottle).

I try a lot of different conditioners, but it’s the one I keep coming back to. It tames and hydrates my lion’s mane hair without weighing it down, and I never get tired of the fresh honeysuckle scent. I’ve been using it regularly since about 1999, if I remember correctly, and I don’t even want to think about how much money I’ve spent on it over the years, ’cause the shiz ain’t cheap.

How about you? What’s one makeup or beauty product you’d like a lifetime supply of?

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

September 25th, 2011 by Karen 5 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

It’s not fair! I was lured out of bed this morning with promises of breakfast. “Come downstairs,” he said, “and we can have breakfast.” That’s what El Hub leaned over and whispered into my ear a few minutes ago. I thought it meant that he made breakfast and it was waiting for me downstairs, but nope. What he meant to say was, “If you get out of bed now, I’ll take you to breakfast.”

Okay, I guess that’s better than nothing. 🙂

Rise and shine, morning glory! It’s…autumn.

So how’d you sleep? Did you do anything fun last night? We just stayed in, but it was great. I got to paint my nails and see a movie I really enjoyed on Netflix called The Winning Season, starring Sam Rockwell and Emma Roberts. It’s about a girl’s high school basketball team and their well-intentioned but hopelessly clueless coach. Sam Rockwell plays the coach. He’s a drunkard with a potty mouth, but he means well. The movie only got a 55% on rottentomatoes, but I’m gonna have to politely disagree with the critics this time. I think it deserved much better than that.

What do you have planned for today? Has it started cooling off where you are? It’s actually a little foggy and chilly out here in Marin this morning, and I read that it might even rain. Oh joy.

If you’re a new visitor to the blog or haven’t stopped by in a while (welcome!), here are links to some of my favorite posts of the week.

What did you think about the worlds of makeup and beauty last week (JK Jemma Kidd made some noise)? Or how about last summer overall? Did you think it was a good season for makeup, or has it been overshadowed by fall?

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

MAC Matchmaster Foundation GET REAL (LOOKING)
MAC MATCHMASTER FOUNDATION EXCELS ON OILY SKIN

“Why, yes, Ryan Gosling, I am wearing something new. How nice of you to notice. It’s the new MAC Matchmaster Foundation ($32.50; available in 14 shades) in shade 5.0, and I’ve been wearing it for about a week…”

Okay, no, Ryan Gosling did not actually remark upon my makeup regimen, but I sure wish he had. I think he might find the technology behind MAC’s new liquid foundation almost as fascinating as I do.

Almost?

You see, it’s all about those spheres we talked about last week. For the new foundation, MAC encapsulated pigments in translucent spheres that they say allow Matchmaster to cover imperfections while still looking like real skin. Read more…

JK Jemma Kidd Fall 2011 Eyeshadows THE NEW FALL 2011 JK JEMMA KIDD EYESHADOWS
AND A HELPING OF LOVE YOURSELF SOUP

Hey, boo. You having a good Tuesday? I hope so. Before we take a look at the new JK Jemma Kidd eyeshadows for fall ($16 each), grab a spoon, and pull up a chair. I’m gonna fix you a bowl of my world famous Love Yourself Soup.

Yup, Love Yourself Soup. I know it sounds silly, but I’m convinced that after you have a bowl, you’ll feel that much better. And really, doesn’t “Love Yourself Soup” sound cooler than “Corn Soup with Tomatoes, Garlic and Basil”?

Oh, what’s that, you say? You’d like to help me in the kitchen? That’s so sweet! Read more…

Pixi Beauty Blush SUBTLY SWEETENED
WITH PIXI BEAUTY BLUSH

With a name like Pixi, it’s gotta be sweet. Take these three new Beauty Blushes ($16 each). It’s like the mint green cases (complete with fairy logo), and the eminently agreeable pink and peach powders inside them, were specifically designed for that part of me that still, and always will, love girly things.

Sure, the price is a king’s ransom for a drugstore brand, but that’s not a big surprise. Pixi’s one of the “highest end” beauty lines available at Target. Still, $16 is getting close to a standard MAC blush.

At least Pixi wasn’t chintzy with the product. With these I feel like you do get more for your doubloons than usual for a drugstore brand blush, both in terms of quantity and quality. The packaging feels sturdier than most, and the blush itself is so soft that based on texture at least, I’d bet these could even pass for a pricier line like Shu. Read more…

JK Jemma Kidd Red Carpet Lip and Cheek Tint and Gloss JK JEMMA KIDD IS ROLLER BALLING OUT THE RED CARPET
WITH HER NEWEST LIP/CHEEK TINT & GLOSS

I find that even on my worst days, a dash of cheek/lip color always perks me up. I probably won’t be using these as cheek tints, but that’s because my lips want them all to themselves. 🙂 Mad props to JK Jemma Kidd for opening my eyes to the joy of lip products with roller-ball applicators. Dang, feels so good.

Methinks the unscented, unflavored liquid excels as a lip tint; it applies evenly all over my lips (and fades evenly, too). As a cheek tint, though, it applies patchy on me, emphasizing any dry flakes I might have, and it takes a while to blend on top of either bare skin or liquid foundation. The clear, non-drying gloss goes on smoothly and has a non-sticky, medium-weight texture that I like; it’s also unscented and unflavored. Read more…

Mariah Carey Lollipop Splash Perfume THERE’S A PARTY IN EACH BOTTLE OF MARIAH CAREY
LOLLIPOP SPLASH THE REMIX PERFUME

I cross my heart and swear on my husky tabby’s low-hanging belly that I really, really tried not to mention Ryan Gosling in this review of the new Mariah Carey Lollipop Splash The Remix perfumes (available in three fragrances; $35 each).

But I failed (obviously), and I blame it on the poster for Ryan’s new movie, Drive.

You see, I’m a font freak — a “ho for Helvetica,” if you will — and the handwritten hot pink type on the poster and in the movie’s opening credits made me hyper aware of flamboyant fonts this week. Fonts like the one on boxes of Mariah’s new Lollipop Splash. Read more…

Chanel Beiges Ombres Tissees Iridescent Effects Eyes in Beiges THE CHANEL OMBRES TISSÉES IRIDESCENT
EFFECTS EYES IN BEIGES AND YOUR INNER PRINCESS

I like to think that within every girl lives a princess, and this morning my princess demanded two things: shimmer and Chanel.

Loved and nurtured, the princess is all smiles, sweetness, sparkles and light. She exists solely to love, and to appreciate beautiful things. Instead of walking places, she frolics; instead of talking, she sings. And sometimes she has daydreams like black and white Fellini films, in which she meanders down cobblestone Roman boulevards wearing a white dress and red high heels.

Not wanting to disappoint the princess, today I introduced her to the new Ombres Tissées Iridescent Effects Eyes in Beiges ($75). Read more…

Illamasqua Theater of the Nameless Face of the Day CRAZY PURPLE LIPS AND AN ILLAMASQUA
THEATER OF THE NAMELESS FACE OF THE DAY

I came across purple Kontrol a few weeks ago with Illamasqua’s fall collection, Theater of the Nameless, and even though it wasn’t quite like anything I’d ever worn before, I still really wanted to give it a try.

I wore it around the house today with a few other pieces from the collection. Something about Kontrol’s rich, dramatic take on purple speaks to me, but I think I might be too goody two-shoes to pull it off (am I wearing it, or is it wearing me?). Maybe if I had a brightly colored vintage tattoo on my shoulder and hot pink ombre highlights. Read more…

MAC Sumptuous Olive Eyeshadow MAC UNSUNG HEROES
SUMPTUOUS OLIVE EYESHADOW

Adulthood isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. There are bills to be paid, work to be done and calories to count (lame). On top of everything else, it becomes harder to meet up with your friends. Getting together with my gal pals used to take a quick phone call (on a LAND line) or a five-minute walk. Now, lunch with the girls requires weeks and sometimes months of planning, eight e-mails, a few Twitter DMs, GPS (or Google Maps), babysitters and bridge tolls.

Yup.

But there are, of course, perks to getting older, like learning when and how to improvise. After stumbling and bumbling enough, you start getting better at rolling with the punches, and figuring out how to “make things work.” Read more…

Two Ways to Win an Autographed Bottle of Michael Kors Perfume (FOUR WINNERS)

September 24th, 2011 by Karen 335 Comments

  • WINNER: The giveaway is closed now, and the winners are Jennifer, Jahneel, PS and and Nikki B! Congratulations, ladies! If you entered but didn’t win this time around, keep trying, and click here to enter any ongoing giveaways before you jet. 🙂

I must say — I love Michael Kors.

Michael Kors

Reason No. 1: His hilariously “out there” observations on fashion design and pop culture every week on Project Runway.

A few of my favorites from the recent past…

“Next thing you know, it’s big button earrings and you’re on The Facts of Life.”

“I feel like a pope at a sex club.”

“She looks like a barefoot Appalachian Lil’ Abner Barbie.”

Crack. Me. Up! Seriously, how does he come up with these things?! Because I want whatever he’s having.

Reason No. 2: My birthday shoes!

I treated myself to his Braided Chain Platforms for my birthday last June, and I swear to gawd! — they’re comfy enough to sleep in, and, well, when I wear ’em, I feel kinda hot.

Reason No. 3: Today’s kick-@ss giveaway featuring two MK fragrances autographed by the man, the myth, the legend himself! — Michael Kors.

A Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway!

Four lucky ladies (or gents) will each win either a golden bottle of Michael Kors 10th Anniversary Eau de Parfum Signature 3.4-oz Eau de Parfum Spray (a $95 value), or a bottle of Michael Kors Gold Eau de Parfum 1.7-oz Eau de Parfum Spray (a $75 value), each one personally signed by Michael Kors. 🙂

The larger golden 10th Anniversary Eau de Parfum bottle was created specifically to commemorate that fragrance’s tenth birthday. As a keepsake, it would make quite a nice addition to any fragrance collection (as there are only 10 of the signed bottles in the world).

The other scent, Michael Kors Gold, was just released last month. It’s a newer, fresher take on Michael’s original fragrance. This one’s also pretty rare (with the autograph), with only a handful of signed bottles existing in the world.

The prize includes…

  • One (1) signed bottle of Michael Kors 10th Anniversary Eau de Parfum Signature Fragrance 3.4-oz Eau de Parfum Spray (a $95 value)

Or…

  • One (1) signed bottle Michael Kors Gold Eau de Parfum 1.7-oz Eau de Parfum Spray (a $75 value)

Each scent’s official fragrance notes…

  • Michael Gold Kors Gold Eau de Parfum — Tuberose, freesia, magnolia, violet, peppery peony and ambergris
  • Michael Kors Eau de Parfum — Dewy freesia, tamarind, Chinese osmantus, incense, fresh tuberose, white wings peony, blue orris, arum lilies, cashmere woods, musk and vetiver Haiti

Michael Kors Gold Eau de Parfum 1.7-oz Eau de Parfum Spray (a $75 value)

Front: Michael Kors Gold Eau de Parfum 1.7-oz Eau de Parfum Spray (a $75 value); Back: Michael Kors 10th Anniversary Eau de Parfum Signature Fragrance 3.4-oz Eau de Parfum Spray (a $95 value)

First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post, a comment about anything at all, like, do you have a favorite Michael Kors piece? Who do you think will win Project Runway this season? What’s your fashion philosophy? Do you prefer to wear gold or silver jewelery? — you get the idea.
  • Second, you can enter by following me on twitter Twitter @karenmbb and retweeting (RT) the following message:

Clothing Ideas for a Fall or Winter Trip to the Tropics

September 23rd, 2011 by Karen 10 Comments

Clothing ideas for a fall or winter trip to the tropics
Hawaii, Christmas 2009

Lucky MBB reader Rachael is taking a potentially BIG tropical trip this January, and she’s shopping for packing ideas.

“My boyfriend and I are taking a trip to Hawaii the first week of January, and I’m at a loss for what to bring. I am possibly the palest person and still have scars from a bad sunburn in the Bahamas when I was a teenager, and I do not want that to happen again.

I also think that on this trip my boyfriend will propose because he’s terrible at keeping secrets and has slipped more than once. I need to know what will take me from hiking to the beach and an engagement but keep it all easy to travel.”

— Rachael

Hey Rachael,

Congrats on your upcoming trip (and hopefully proposal)! 🙂 Sounds like the makings of a marvelous month.

Whenever I travel to someplace tropical, I try to pack as many multitasking products and pieces of clothing as possible. Clothing-wise, for a one-week trip, that means a few lightweight, versatile dresses in stretchy fabrics that resist wrinkling, because I can easily dress them up or down.

When I head to the beach, I’ll slip a dress over my bikini, step into a pair of flip-flops, put on a wide-brimmed hat (great for extra sun protection to complement SPF), and drop a sarong or a wide, lightweight cotton scarf into my beach bag, just in case I end up in direct sunlight for a while and want some extra coverage for my shoulders.

I like Coolibar’s Silk Infinity Scarf ($39). Made from hand-dyed twisted silk, it’s lightweight, hardly takes up any space in a bag or luggage, and provides excellent UV protection. One caveat, though: it’s dry clean only.

How about a hat? Clockwise from the black hat on the lower left: Coolibar Shapeable Poolside Sun Hat ($45); Collection XIIX Bold Stripe Floppy Paper Straw Hat ($25); Kinda Shady Straw Sun Hat ($14); August Hat Bead Trim Paper Straw Kettle Hat ($19)

For nice dinners or nights out on the town, I’ll jazz up a dress with a bold necklace, bracelet or earrings and put on a pair of strappy sandals (dressier than flip-flops). I’ll also add a button-down sweater and/or another scarf if it gets chilly at night.

Which reminds me — I love bringing scarves when I travel, even to the tropics. They’re easy, affordable ways to switch up an outfit, and if they’re wide enough, you can even wear them as a wrap on a cool night.

As for hiking, dresses can still work, believe it or not. I’ve done it before. Granted, not on hard-core hikes, but for easy trails.

If you don’t mind looking a little silly in a dress and hiking boots, a dress should do you just fine. For more strenuous activities, though, don’t forget to pack a pair of shorts and a t-shirt in your beach bag or backpack (TIP: If you’re trying to make every cubic inch of packing space count, keep in mind that you can usually find super cheap t-shirts for sale at many tropical tourist destinations, including Hawaii).

With autumn here, this might be a good time to grab some great outgoing summer stuff on sale. Here’s a few ideas I found online…

Nordstrom dresses on sale from the left: BP. Double Scoop Tank Dress ($12); Stem Pleat Front Dress ($20) and Remain Knit Dress ($25)

Lulu.com dresses from the left: Alternative Apparel Racer Tank Grey Dress ($40) and Sidewalk Bistro Striped Dress ($38)
