Win a $50 Sephora eGift card from Makeup and Beauty Blog

Rise and shine, morning glory. Before we get to the giveaway, I gotta talk about Drive! El Hub and I caught a late showing last night, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

In Drive, Ryan Gosling tears. It. Up. Boy is so bad@ss as a getaway driver with a heart of gold that he makes me want to drive to Trader Joe’s right now really, really fast, sitting down low in the driver’s seat with my collar turned up, a pair of black leather driving gloves on my hands and mirror-finish shades.

Strong and silent describe Ryan’s unnamed character in the film, and that’s what I think it is, too, a film. This ain’t no cheesy popcorn flick. Ain’t no Fast and the Furious knockoff. It’s a movie muscle car, part ’70s heist caper, part ’80s art-house picture, part hopeless romance meets man-in-peril at a NASCAR race.

I loved it! I’d never heard of the director, Nicolas Winding Refn, before, but it’s as if he channeled the best parts of David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino (whom I usually don’t like) and Martin Scorsese. I can see the group of them meeting for peach cobbler and coffee at some old diner in L.A. one morning scribbling out the storyboard on little white napkins. Refn took all the best parts of The Notebook, Days of Thunder, Purple Rain, The Fugitive and Casino and combined them to make something pretty cool and different.

Okay, I’ll stop. Suffice it to say, watch it! Highly recommended, even though it is violent, and Ryan Gosling doesn’t show his tum. 🙁

In other news, it’s…

A Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway!

Totally cool how we don’t even know Ryan’s character’s name in the movie. I don’t think they ever said it once.

3 Things I Love About Makeup

September 16th, 2011 by Karen 27 Comments

1. I love that it washes off

Halloween in April? Why not. I love how with makeup you can get wacky with colors and looks, but you don’t have to commit to anything permanently. On any given day, you can be a princess, a warrior, a warrior princess, a go-go dancing alien vampire — whomever you want to be (barring the oppressive realities of workplace etiquette).

2. I love how it boosts my confidence

It’s amazing what a little concealer, mascara, brow filler and gloss can do. Even with minimal makeup on, I feel myself holding my head up higher.

Vera Farmiga: Her Best Hair?

September 13th, 2011 by Karen 18 Comments

I am not a morning person. I usually take about two hours to “power up” after waking, and until I’m sufficiently charged, my linguistic capabilities are limited to a couple of halfhearted grunts, and perhaps a “hrmph!” or two.

But there are two things that do accelerate the power-up process: TV and coffee/tea. If I can spend about 10 minutes in the morning with a cup of tea while watching how other humans communicate, I’m usually good.

This morning I watched a few minutes of a movie called Joshua on SyFy (it’s been years since they changed the spelling from “SciFi,” but I still always want to say “See Fee” whenever I see the little logo in the corner of the screen), starring Sam Rockwell and the lovely Vera Farmiga.

It’s about a couple, their newborn baby girl, and their young son Joshua, who becomes jealous of the new addition to the family. Creepy things start to happen around the house, and by the time the couple realizes that their son Joshua is to blame, it’s too late for the family.

Jackpot! Can’t go wrong with zombie and vampire flicks, possession movies and films about precocious children who hatch evil plans. Instant win.

Watching the movie I realized that I didn’t know much about Vera Farmiga, its leading lady, although I have enjoyed many of her recent movies, like Source Code, The Departed and Up in the Air (for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination).

New Jersey’s own Vera Ann Farmiga, born August 6, 1973 and raised in a strict Ukrainian Catholic household, originally wanted to be an optometrist when she grew up, but she changed her mind and decided instead to study acting at the Syracuse University School of Visual and Performing Arts.

She made her Broadway debut in 1996 as an understudy in the play Taking Sides, and after several stage roles, started getting cast in movies.

Now, when she isn’t lighting up the screen, she’s raising her two kids and pet angora goats. 🙂

I like how she’s willing to take chances with her hair, especially the color. She’s spent time as a blonde, a brunette and a redhead, too.

Which of Vera's hairstyles do you like best?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Sept. 12

September 12th, 2011 by Karen 56 Comments

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll
Even Tabs stops to smell the flowers…

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 185. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. A little frazzled. I got a late start this morning, but I’m trying to make the most of having to play catch-up on a Monday morning. It’s all we can do, ya know?

  3. How do you feel about polka dots?
  4. It depends. I’m down with dots if they’re tiny, and the color palette’s neutral, like black and white, navy and white, or tan and white.

  5. If you could live a life of luxury in any city in the world, which city would it be?
  6. Honolulu! Perfect weather year round, great food and surfing without a wetsuit. Heaven.

  7. Your childhood nickname(s)?
  8. My folks (still) call me anak ko (ah-nock-ko), which means “my child” in Tagalog, or sometimes Kate or Katie. My brother calls me ate (pronounced ah-tee), which means “older sister” in Tagalog.

  9. What are the makeup/beauty products you use most often?
  10. Hmm… Probably my Shu Uemura Lash Curler or the MAC 226 Angled Brush (for filling in my brows).

  11. Your makeup motto?
  12. I have a few (have fun no matter what, makeup isn’t permanent, etc.), but my favorite is probably “go drag or go home!” I think it sums up how I feel about mascara. I love big, bold in-your-face lash looks.

  13. Describe your personal makeup aesthetic:
  14. I love classic, elegant makeup with a twist — something like a strong cat eye or a bold lip.

  15. Do you wear mascara on your lower lashes?
  16. Sometimes. It depends on how much time I have to get ready. When I’m running behind, I’ll skip it.

  17. Do you have a secret weapon?
  18. Actually, I have 10 of them. My toes! I have pretty great toe-eye coordination and can use them for good — things like picking up pennies and pencils from the floor — or for evil, like pinching people.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. Gotta keep it simple this week, so I’m sticking to healthful daily goals like eating salads for lunch and exercising for at least 60 minutes every day.

Happy Monday, holmes! I hope your day got off to a good start.

If you have a moment, drop in and let me know how you’re doing. Have you ever done the Monday Poll?

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. How do you feel about polka dots?
3. If you could live a life of luxury in any city in the world, which city would it be?
4. Your childhood nickname(s)?
5. What are the makeup/beauty products you use most often?
6. Your makeup motto?
7. Your personal makeup aesthetic?
8. Do you wear mascara on your lower lashes?
9. Do you have a secret weapon?
10. Weekly goals:

Are you looking for adventure this week, or would you rather play it safe? I’m sort of on the fence. I wouldn’t mind a little adventure as long as it ends by about 7 at night, haha! 🙂

Karen

Sundays with Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 156

September 11th, 2011 by Karen 20 Comments

Tabs the Cat, international style icon

During his apprenticeship with Tim Gunn, Tabs learned some very valuable lessons about the cat-eat-cat world of feline high fashion, one of them being to always stay ahead of the trends. Fall behind for even a minute, and the gossip/celeb/style mags and blogs will skewer you.

Luckily, Tabs has a solid team of talented stylists surrounding him — professionals who keep him fabulous from head to tail — but sometimes, like now during NYFW, those professionals are too busy for Tabs, and I get tasked to help.

Which brings us to this: hats. This fall Tabs needs clever, stylish headgear to keep his ears warm and his bad fur days covered while remaining fashion-forward all the way.

I did some research this weekend, but I could use a second opinion. Can you help?

Which of these hats would look best on Tabs? Keep in mind that while he values form over function, he likes practical accessories, too.

Who is Tabs the Cat? About three years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model). 🙂

1. William Bowler Hat

$20, available now online at the melpdesigns Etsy shop.

2. Froggy Hat

$12, available now online at the mseebaldt Etsy shop.

3. Robin Hood Hat

$26, available now online at the ToScarboroughFair Etsy shop.

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

September 11th, 2011 by Karen 11 Comments

Remembering September 11, 2001
Photo remixed from an original by Guillaume Cattiaux

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years already, but I can still remember the day like it was yesterday. Clear as a bell.

I remember thinking on the day it happened about something my high school history teacher used to say. He would always talk about the day President Kennedy was shot, and how it was just one of those things that was so traumatic, so frightening, that he remembered every single thing that happened to him that day. That’s how it is. I remember every single thing that happened to me on September 11; the day was etched into my memory forever.

I’ve been reading some of the stories of the families who lost loved ones, the children who lost parents and are now 10 years older, and although there’s deep sadness there, there’s also something remarkable about how people keep going, how they carry on, despite tragedy.

Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing today, I hope you feel safe, happy and loved. And if you feel like it, stop by and say hi in the comments.

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

Argan oil MASSACHUSETTS TO MELBOURNE
BEAUTY DOWN UNDA’

Late last year my husband and I became American expats living abroad when we made the move to Australia from the U.S. for his new job. I knew about our big journey months in advance, so I did the best I could to prepare and studied anything and everything I could about the land down unda’ before we arrived; however, I made two fatal mistakes.

First, I never fully realized just how expensive things would be down here, and second, I was unprepared for how long I’d have to wait for makeup collections to make their big debuts here after being released in the States.

As a woman of substance, I have my needs. Among them: facial moisturizer, hair products (loads of ‘em), perfume, nail polish, and anything pertaining to MAC, Benefit, Clinique and Philosophy. Not long after moving, I was already hitting the bottom of my assorted elixirs and potions, wondering what I was going to do. Read more…

Dolce and Gabbana Sweet Temptations Collection DOLCE & GABBANA SWEET TEMPTATIONS COLLECTION
CINNAMON, CANDIED AND GREEN ALMOND FEEL FRESH-FACED AND SWEET

Dolce & Gabbana’s epic eyeshadow quads are total limelight hogs that often steal the show in the brand’s seasonal makeup launches, but in this fall’s Sweet Temptations collection, the Smooth Eye Colour Duo in Cinnamon ($36) and Crayon Intense Eyeliners in Green Almond ($29) and Candied ($29) are giving the Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Cocoa ($59) a run for its money.

Nothing against Cocoa’s warm, cozy chocolate, cream and orange, but I’m liking the fresh, sweet glow I get from these pieces even more. Read more…

Urban Decay Sparkling Lip Gloss YOU’LL BE SPARKLING FOR HOURS
WITH THE NEW URBAN DECAY STARDUST SPARKLING LIP GLOSSES

I’m making the weekend last through Tuesday this week with Urban Decay’s new Stardust Sparkling Lip Glosses, because ooh-la-la, sis-boom-bah! — these sheer, sparkly glosses are just too much fun for regular weekends.

I’m still tracking down prices and availability on these and the other Urban Decay fall/holiday launches, but I think it’s safe to assume that these will cost around $16-19 each, right in line with the price of an average UD gloss.

Based on the three I’ve been getting to know since late last week — Space Cowboy (a shimmery champagne) Andromeda (a shimmery, peachy pinkish gold) and Glitter Rock (a shimmery magenta) — these are light on pigment but heavy on glitter and shine, and what I like most about them is the way they feel on my lips. There’s no grit to ‘em, as far as I can tell, unlike quite a few other glittery glosses on the market. Read more…

Chanel Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Fauve TEAM TAUPE TAKES HOME THE SILVER IN THE NEW
CHANEL OMBRE ESSENTIELLE SOFT TOUCH EYESHADOW IN FAUVE

Doth shimmery taupe eyeshadows make thy booty shake? If colors like MAC Satin Taupe make you want to drop it like it’s hot, better limber up, young lady, because Chanel Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Fauve ($28.50) is going to ask you to dance.

Like Satin Taupe’s 21-year-old cousin, shimmery taupe Fauve is a bit of a party girl. Her fab flecks of silver glitter distinguish her from everyday workhorse shades, and when I swatched the shadow at the counter last week, I must have sounded like a hungry Homer Simpson when I spontaneously said, “Mmmmmm… glitter.” Read more…

Dolce and Gabbana Sweet Temptations Lipsticks THE LIP COLORS IN THE DOLCE & GABBANA SWEET TEMPTATIONS
COLLECTION ARE SPRINGING INTO FALL

For the first time in many moons, I felt a chill this morning when I stepped out of bed, and before making my way downstairs with Tabs, I bundled up with long pants a sweatshirt and robe.

Bluh…

It turned out to be sunny today, but the brisk kiss of crisp air that heralds fall never completely went away. Soon, the oak tree outside my window will lose its leaves, and the sun will set every afternoon before El Hub gets home from work.

Fall won’t wait just because we wish it would, but at least the springy new lip products in the Dolce & Gabbana Sweet Temptations collection aren’t all about fall. Read more…

Chanel Inimitable Intense in Purple BLONDES REALLY DO HAVE MORE FUN
WITH CHANEL INIMITABLE INTENSE MASCARA IN PURPLE

Truer words were never spoken — in reference to Chanel’s new Inimitable Intense Mascara in Purple ($30, part of the new Sophisticated Eye collection). The first time the wand graced the back of my hand and I got a good look at the swatch, I feared that the color of this brownish plum would be lost upon my dark fringe. But oh, how I wanted to believe!

The logical part of my brain said I shouldn’t expect much; it said I’d never be able to see the tint on my dark lashes, but the Coco-obsessed part of my brain kept telling me not to worry. “Trust in Coco, Karen. Everything will work out in the end.” Read more…

Bobbi Brown Marrakesh Chic THE RICH COLOR EYESHADOWS IN THE BOBBI BROWN MARRAKESH CHIC COLLECTION
LOVE LADIES IN THEIR 30s, 40s, 50s AND BEYOND

Not gonna lie, Marrakesh Chic is probably the most excited I’ve been about a Bobbi Brown release in a while. The new Rich Color Eyeshadows, WHEW! Kind of amazing.

But before we dive in, let’s — beep, beep, beep! — back up a second. Bobbi recently launched this new fall collection for eyes, lips and cheeks at Bobbi Brown counters and also online. The Rich Color Eyeshadows ($24 each), a brand spankin’ new line of powder shadows, headline the launch.

I swatched the collection a couple weeks ago; right off the bat, I had a feeling that Bobbi’s Rich Color Eyeshadows would rock me down to Electric Avenue. And they did. Now, after having worn two of the eight shades, I’m itching to grab a few more. Read more…

MAC Fall Colour Lipsticks THE MAC FALL COLOUR
COLLECTION MAKES IT EASY TO SMILE FOR THE CAMERA

Photography geek alert! Everyone please remain calm, but this is kind of a big deal, especially if you’re a fellow photography geek and/or major MAC fan.

When I heard a while back that acclaimed New York photographer Cindy Sherman was going to be taking pics for the new MAC Fall Colour collection, I nearly dropped my DSLR!

Sherman’s probably best known for her self-portraits, where she gets into a specific character and does the whole kit and caboodle herself — everything from her own makeup, to styling, to modeling for the shoots and, of course, taking her own pics — and her work often tackles topics like women in society, media and art. Win a $50 Sephora eGift card from Makeup and Beauty Blog
Remember Josh Hartnett? I caught him in Wicker Park last night on TV, which I hadn’t seen before (it’s kinda weird). I thought he turned in a fairly respectable man candy performance. He had those abs goin’ on and whatnot.

Didn’t it seem like he was starring in everything that came out there for a while? He was a hot commodity. Then POOF! Like Keyser Söze…he just disappeared.

According to Wikipedia, he’s been keeping busy. He’s done about a movie year since 2000, but other than Wicker Park, the last of his movies I’ve seen was 30 Days of Night a few years back. Great vampire flick, that was.

Anywho, welcome to your weekend, young lady! I hope it treats you well.

I’m…at a loss for words over tomorrow being the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, and I’m sure you know what I mean. Just so many memories and emotions still as vivid and raw as they were a decade ago. It seems like every generation has an experience something like that, an event that seems to change everything about their world, and for many of us, this is ours. Most of us here are old enough to remember that day…

I wish I could reach through the monitor right now and give you a good, long hug. Maybe if I close my eyes and try really, really hard…

You take care of yourself this weekend, friend, and know that there’s a little brown girl out in California who wishes you well.

Now before you go about about your day, take a second to enjoy yourself. I think you know what that means. It’s…

A Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway!

Seriously, Josh Hartnett needs to star in more movies. Who do we talk to about that?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Sept. 5

September 5th, 2011 by Karen Leave a Comment

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 184. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. I’m A-OK for Labor Day. 🙂 El Hub has the day off from work today, and that always puts me (and Tabs) in a good mood.

  3. Which lip colors do you wear least often and why?
  4. As much as I love the dramatic statements they make, I rarely wear dark burgundies and purples (like MAC Me Over’s Lipstick Price Noir up there at the top) because they’re just so high maintenance! Whenever I wear one there’s about a 93% chance it’ll be smeared across my cheek within 10 minutes.

  5. What’s one thing you do to simplify your morning routine?
  6. I don’t do it every day, but when I have a big meeting where I want to look sharp, I’ll set aside my outfit and accessories the night before and iron anything that looks wrinkly.

  7. When was the last time you groomed your brows?
  8. Yesterday! Sundays are my beauty catch-up days. I’ll pluck and trim my brows, de-fuzz my upper lip, shave my big toes (hey, gotta keep it real), exfoliate my bod (my current favorite scrub: Burt’s Bees Honey & Shea Sugar Scrub), and paint my nails/toes.

  9. The last thing you treated yourself to?
  10. A pair of shoes and earrings from the Kate Spade Sample Sale last week.

  11. Something that recently surprised you about yourself?
  12. Wow, a list like this could takes days! I guess the most surprising thing I’ve figured out about myself lately has been that I’m tougher than I used to give myself credit for being.

  13. S’mores?
  14. Yes, please! I haven’t had ’em for years (or been around any campfires, for that matter), but from what I can remember, s’mores get a big fat YEA!

  15. What’s one good thing that happened to you this weekend?
  16. I got nine hours of shut-eye on Saturday night — probably the best sleep I’ve gotten over the past month.

  17. If you could star on a reality TV show, which one would would it be?
  18. Definitely no shows involving deserted islands, outdoor plumbing and/or physical challenges. 🙂 Oh, and no hot tubs… I’ve seen enough reality TV to know that.

So maybe one of those home decorating shows on HGTV? Lawd knows I need the help. Been here in this condo for two years and still have beige walls, a beige carpet and a dining room without furniture. I’m a home decorator’s nightmare!

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. I’m determined to work out for at least an hour every day, to try out some new eye makeup colors, and I want to find a really great ab workout DVD (any suggestions)?

Hey, friend. I know that some folks here in the U.S. have today off, but if you’re holding down the fort at work, this virtual cup of coffee , and this video of a cat playing with a dolphin, are for you.

Isn’t the video just about the cutest thing!? Even El Hub said, “awwww.”

I know you have places to go and sites to see, but if you have a minute, let me know how you’re doing in today’s Monday Poll.

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. Which lip colors do you wear least often and why?
3. What’s one thing you do to simplify your morning routine?
4. When was the last time you groomed your brows?
5. The last thing you treated yourself to?
6. Something that recently surprised you about yourself?
7. S’mores?
8. What’s one good thing that happened to you this weekend?
9. If you could star on a reality TV show, which one would would it be?
10. Weekly goals:

Have a great Monday, young lady, and a fabulous week.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
