Win a $50 Sephora eGift card from Makeup and Beauty Blog
One of the most valuable things I’ll take away from my time here at BlogHer is a motivational trick I actually learned at the San Francisco International Airport on the way here. It’s a great way to get yourself to do things you might otherwise not want to do. In my case, they might be things like getting up early on a Saturday morning, going for a run, doing laundry, vacuuming the stairs or cleaning the kitchen.

In practice, it works a little something like this: “If I get out of bed by 6:30 this morning, I can have a Pink Berry.” Or, another variation, equally effective: “If I clean the toilet today, I can have a Pink Berry tonight.”

It’s surprisingly effective. 🙂

Rise and shine, morning glory! It’s going to be a beautiful day. I’ll be over at the conference hall for most of it, but I hope to be able to walk around in the sunshine later this afternoon before the sun sets. I told myself that if I pay attention in class today, I can have a Pink Berry this afternoon…

I hope your workweek ended on a good note; let’s make sure your weekend starts on one.

I think you know what that means…

BlogHer 2011: The Write Brain | Essential Writing and Editing Skills

BlogHer 2011: Essential Writing and Editing Skills
Speakers from left to right: Jane Byers Goodwin, K.T. Bradford, Polly Pagenhart

Talk about fantastic! My first of two BlogHer sessions here today was one of the most interesting classes I’ve taken in a while. I love it when the instructors actually sound like people you’d like to get to know in real life. I actually laughed out loud a couple times!

As you can probably tell by the title of this post, the first session I attended here today was about writing and editing, two very important aspects of not just blogging, but also day-to-day life.

Most of us probably have the need to convey something clearly in print, and so I hope that even if you aren’t a blogger, you’re still able to take something useful away from this.

The speakers…

Jane Byers Goodwin

@mamacita
Social Media Specialist, Writer, Speaker, Internet Watchdog, Absentminded Professor, Education Advocate/Critic, Mommy

K.T. Bradford

@ktbradford
TechGeek, ChicGeek, Just Plain Geek — Writer at Notebooks.com and Android Central

Polly Pagenhart

Utterly unable to contain myself to 140 chars. But will try valiantly. Wish me lu-
lesbiandad.net

Here are some tidbits I grasped and managed to jot down. These shouldn’t be taken as direct quotes, as I was repeatedly distracted by all of the stylish looking girls in the room. 🙂

K.T.: The biggest thing I’ve learned is that writing is rewriting. My biggest message today would have to be that the first draft you put out there might be pretty good, but you shouldn’t be afraid to rewrite.

K.T.: Most of us have learned these skills [about grammar] at one point, but they get pushed aside because we’re busy, etc. The purpose of this session is to help you tighten up your prose so that it makes the fullest impact.

JANE: Often the first draft is the one that comes out that’s closest to our hearts, but people will notice your grammar and your spelling before they notice your message. Often if your spelling and grammar aren’t good, your message will be lost. With my students, I call this the trust factor.

K.T.: What underpins good writing? Voice does have quite a bit to do with it, but having an authentic voice isn’t necessarily about writing the way that you talk. It’s more about making sure that the things you’re passionate about are being delivered clearly. Try not to let grammar rules trip you up too much.

K.T.: Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott, is really an excellent book. In it she has a chapter called Writing the Sh*tty First Draft. You should never be afraid to write a sh*tty first draft. Don’t be afraid to let that first draft come out in your natural voice. The first draft is where you want to let your authentic voice shine through without it being blocked by editing. The best way to preserve your voice is to just let it out.

JANE: Spell check is not your friend. Spell check hates you. Spell check is your enemy. Use it for a once through, but it doesn’t know the difference between affect and effect.

JANE: Serious pieces require serious checking. Little folksy pieces, not so much. Never use a four-syllable word when a two-syllable word will do. It makes us sound pretentious, and none of us need to do that unless we’re writing about fine wine.

Two Ways to Win a Pan of MAC Blushbaby Blush

August 4th, 2011 by Karen 574 Comments

  • WINNER: The giveaway is closed now, and the winner is Bonnie! Congratulations, Bonnie! If you entered but didn’t win this time around, keep trying, and click here to enter any ongoing giveaways before you jet. 🙂

Like Willie Nelson says, I’m on the road again, and what goes great with travel?

Games! 🙂

I thought it might be fun to hold a few giveaways while I’m here; tonight’s features a product near and dear to my heart. MAC Blushbaby was the very first MAC blush I ever purchased (not this exact pan, of course…because that would be gross), and it ended up being the only blush I wore for years.

Before Blushbaby, I don’t think I ever wore blush at all. Then, one random day, a friendly MAC artist introduced me to this sheer, pinkish beige powder (it produces a lovely, natural-looking flush), and look at me now — hooked! Turns out Blushbaby was my gateway blush.

Warm up those fingertips because our giveaway starts in three, two, one…

A Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway!

One lucky lady will win…

  • One (1) pan of MAC Powder Blush in Blushbaby (a $19.50 value)

Swatch of Blushbaby on NC42 skin

Blushbaby on cheeks

I think Blushbaby looks great on pale pretties and darker divas alike. I can’t remember ever seeing it on anyone and thinking, “Hmm…” It’s a great everyday shade that looks fantastic on a wide range of skin tones.

  • There are two ways to enter, and you can do both of them for two chances to win. First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post, a comment about anything at all (just one comment, please), like, tell me about the last time someone made you blush, or describe the technique and tools you use to apply your blush, or tell me this: have you ever hit the pan on a blush? — you get the idea.
  • Second, you can enter by following me on twitter Twitter @karenmbb and retweeting (RT) the following message:
    • Follow @karenmbb and RT to Win a Pan of MAC Blushbaby Blush http://bit.ly/nY01Pv

  • The deadline to enter is Friday, August 5, 2011 at 11:59PM (PT). Yes, this one’s a quickie.
  • Entrants must enter using a valid email address and/or Twitter account to win.
  • A maximum of two (2) entries per person — one within the comments at the bottom of this post, and a second entry via Twitter addressed to me @karenmbb.
  • Contest is open to individuals of any country who have reached the age of majority according to their local laws (18 in the United States with these exceptions: Alabama and Nebraska, 19; Mississippi, 21).

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, August 1

August 1st, 2011 by Karen 111 Comments

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 179. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Steady. It’s not exactly a mood, but it’s just what I needed. I’ve been emotionally all over the place for the past few days (partly hormonal, partly introspective ever since the baby shower last weekend), but I woke up this morning feeling like I had a better foothold on reality, as dramatic as that probably sounds.

  3. Chanel No. 5 — love it or leave it?
  4. I love all things Coco, but I don’t feel mature enough for No. 5 yet. Maybe later down the road…

  5. How often do you exfoliate?
  6. My face — every other day using the Clarisonic Mia and La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser . It’s a non-foaming face wash for sensitive and/or dry skin.

My bod, I exfoliate a little less often, maybe once or twice a week, using whichever body scrub I happen to have in my shower. Lately that’s been Pacifica Kona Coffee & Sugar Detox Whole Body Scrub.

It really depends on my schedule. When I’m pressed for time, I’m willing to skip exfoliating my body to give myself more time for other things.

  7. Do you enjoy house cleaning?
  8. No, not at all, but I do enjoy how I feel when I’m done and the place looks better, and I know that it’s actually clean.

  9. One of your weird quirks?
  10. I get all Fast & Furious when I’m driving on the freeway and get stuck in a lane between two big rigs. Makes me super nervous, for some reason.

  11. One of your oldest pieces of jewelry?
  12. A coral and gold bracelet I’ve had since I was a kid. I wore it all the time in college, but I put it away some years after almost losing it once at work (I have a chronic problem with losing jewelry, which is why I prefer costume stuff). Now I have it stowed away in a safe place and rarely take it out. I’d be heartbroken if it ever disappeared, so I’d rather just know it exists somewhere safe, than actually wear and possibly lose it. Weird, I know.

  13. Are you a card shark?
  14. Nope. I’m terrible at card games, actually. I can never remember the rules; I can’t tell you how many times El Hub has tried to teach me poker.

    “Blackjack! Oh — that’s a different game?”

  15. Would you ever get a tattoo of your pet?
  16. That’s a tough one! I don’t have any tattoos, but that’s one I just might get to memorialize Tabs when the time comes for him to go meet his friends at the rainbow bridge (I can barely bring myself to think about it!).

I’ve had many pets and have shared deep connections with them before, but none have been like the bond I have with Tabs. He’s a very, very special kitty — a once in a lifetime cat companion.

  17. Eyes/lips/cheeks?
  18. I’m wearing the same makeup I wore to my BFF’s shower on Saturday, which has been my go-to look as of late. Eyes: NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base; MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot; MAC Eyeshadows in Ricepaper, Soft Brown and Arena; MAC Eye Kohl in Feline; Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara topped with Buxom Amplified; and Benefit Instant Brow. Lips: MAC Lipstick in Impassioned. Cheeks: NARS Orgasm, Albatross and Laguna Blush/Bronzer Trio.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. To make healthy food choices every day this week (I ate too much frozen crap, aka “bullsh*t food,” last week), to exercise at least 30 minutes each day, to find a good fitness app for my iPhone (got any recs?), and to read for at least two hours every day (a lot, I know, but it’s like mental exercise).

Geez, August, already? I know that technically we still have plenty of summer left, but I can’t even bear to think about it getting cold again. I’m not ready!

But one thing I am ready for is to hear from you. How ’bout we get this party started with the Monday Poll? 🙂

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. Chanel No. 5 — love it or leave it?
3. How often do you exfoliate?
4. Do you enjoy cleaning?
5. One of your weird quirks?
6. One of your oldest pieces of jewelry?
7. Are you a card shark?
8. Would you ever get a tattoo of your pet?
9. Eyes/lips/cheeks?
10. Weekly goals:

I think you and I are going to have a great week. I can feel it in my knees. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sundays with Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 150

July 31st, 2011 by Karen 28 Comments

Desperately seeking upgrade

Tabs has been wanting to redecorate his loft/home office for a while now. Originally, Nate Berkus had signed on to do the work, which amounted to a full makeover of the space, on his daytime show, but due to scheduling conflicts, it just never materialized.

So now the responsibility falls to me. Somehow, I have to appease the sensibilities of a diva kitty supermodel with incredible fashion and style sense.

I know, I’m screwed…

Tabs likes modern furniture, and the piece he needs most urgently is a new bed; his current cardboard one is literally falling apart.

Could you do me a favor and give us a hand? In your opinion, which of these beds below would best suit Tabs? 🙂

1. Modern Pet Bed, Sofa and Chaise Sectional

This one’s $210 and available now at the ModPet Etsy shop.

2. Handmade Modern Plywood Pet Bed

I think he might like this one because he’s totally into clean lines and height. It’s $149 and available now at the Atomic Attic Etsy Shop.

3. Retro Mod Pet Bed in Avocado Ribcord

This one’s $79, so it’s more affordable than the first two. It’s available now at the Likekittysville Etsy shop. Tabs does likes things that match his green eyes…

4. Upcycled Television Pet Bed

Tabs has always wanted to star in his own reality TV show. Maybe he could film one at home with this retro-style TV bed. It’s $129 and available now at the Atomic Etsy Shop.

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

July 31st, 2011 by Karen 11 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

I can’t get over how big the babies were. Yesterday at my friend Jen’s baby shower, which was a lot of fun, by the way, the girls who were just little kids and babies back when Jen and I were kids are all grown up now. It’s weird… I haven’t seen some of them in years, and now the youngest one is 17. The last time I remember seeing her, she literally was a baby; now she’s a young lady!

It’s freakin’ me out.

Anywho, how are things out your way today? How are you doing this morning? I have a routine on Sundays that I follow, and it usually goes a little something like this: some time around 7, which is about an hour later than I get up during the week, I feel a husky tabby paw placed possessively on my chest or shoulder that tells me I’m supposed to get up. I usually roll over at that point and try to go back to sleep, but like most alarms, the tabby alarm clock has a snooze, and it keeps going off until I finally relent and get out of bed.

Which brings me to you and us to right now. 🙂

Can I interest you in some coffee? I just made a fresh pot. It’s a vanilla macadamia nut 10% Kona blend my mother-in-law sent over in a care package from Hawaii. What can I get you for breakfast? Some wheat toast, multi-grain waffles, Trader Joe’s frosted strawberry toaster pastries (TJ’s version of Pop-Tarts), or how about a bowl of cereal? We have Raisin Bran Crunch and Kashi Go Lean.

No? Nothing yet? Okay. I’ll check back a little later (but help yourself to the coffee). In the meantime, let’s take one final look back at some of the things we talked about this week on the blog. We’re kinda between big seasonal makeup releases now, but I like that because it means having more time for drugstore beauty shopping and remembering Unsung Heroes.

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

MAC Fast Response Eye CreamMAC UNSUNG HEROES
FAST RESPONSE EYE CREAM

What good’s a fast-acting beauty product if it takes forever to find?

Not much, which is why I like to strategically place tubes of MAC Fast Response Eye Cream ($30) where I can reach them in a hurry. To that end, I keep one in my travel makeup bag, and another atop my dresser.

Oh, and then there’s the wayward one I found, with all of two drops remaining, in the passenger side door compartment of my car the other day. Poor thing probably thought I’d forgotten it was there (I did)…

Needless to say, I kindasorta love this cream. Read more…

Chanel Olivia Wilde Face of the Day AN OLIVIA WILDE-INSPIRED
CHANEL FACE OF THE DAY

I’ve been counting down the days ‘til the release of Cowboys & Aliens, and the invasion is almost here (July 29)! Just gimme a bucket of salty popcorn, a story about angry aliens and 90 uninterrupted minutes with hottie-bo-bottie Daniel Craig, and I’m good to go. 🙂

Sure, the movie looks cheesy (potentially very cheesy), but I’m keeping my fingers crossed because, after all, you never know, right? It’s high time someone pitted gunslingers against extra terrestrials, and maybe it’ll work out as well as other unusual pairings like chicken and waffles, salt and caramel, and Brigitte Nielsen and Flavor Flav.

I’m also looking forward to seeing the lovely Olivia Wilde, whom I’m currently girl crushing on BIG TIME right now. Read more…

MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder Pressed EVEN IF PRESSED, I’D HAVE TROUBLE FINDING FAULT WITH
MAC PREP + PRIME TRANSPARENT FINISHING POWDER

Sometimes I wonder whether MAC has my house bugged or if they’ve recruited Tabs as a spy. The company always seems to know my secret makeup desires, even when I haven’t shared them with on the blog.

It’s uncanny! Take MAC Prep + Prime Loose Powder, for instance, and how many times in reference to it I’ve said, “I wish MAC made a pressed powder version of this.”

Maybe I just watch too many cop shows, but when I heard that MAC planned to add a pressed version of Prep + Prime to their permanent line next month, the first thing I did was glance at Tabs.

“Are you spying on me?” I asked.

Of course he didn’t answer… Typical behavior for a spy. Read more…

MAC Turquatic Fragrance ReturnsWHERE HAVE YOU BEEN MAC TURQUATIC?
OH, GETTING A NEW OUTFIT, I SEE

You’re cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway on your way to meet friends for dinner. The sun just set, and the sky’s a mix of orange, pink and violet where it meets the sea on the horizon. Your swimsuit fits in all the right ways, and you’ve got the windows down to dry your hair. You don’t really know the hot boy who sits in dangerously low-hanging board shorts in the passenger seat, but he seems sweet. You’ll get to know him better soon.

That is MAC Turquatic. Light and watery, it’s like a cleaner, crisper, less sugary sweet version of Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue, and it’s my absolute favorite MAC scent, hands down.

When rumors surfaced earlier this year about it being discontinued, and it started disappearing from MAC counters, stores and the MAC website, I freaked! Read more…

Target Up and Up Cosmetic Applicators TARGET’S LITTLE UP & UP COSMETIC APPLICATORS
ARE BIG HITS WITH ME

You know I’m all about cheap thrills…at the drugstore. 🙂

Like these neato mosquito Up & Up Cosmetic Applicators. I bumped into them at Target the other day, $1.99 for a pack of 75.

They’re basically custom, generic/Target-branded Q-tips made with makeup in mind. One side’s pointy, and the other is shaped like a flat paddle. Together, they’re designed to cover quite a few cosmetic tool needs, from applying and blending makeup, to fixing nail polish mistakes. Read more…

9 THINGS: I Feel Like I'm Always9 THINGS
I FEEL LIKE I’M ALWAYS…

I feel like I’m always writing lists. Like this morning, for example, I was writing in my journal, just jotting down my plans for the day, when I started thinking about things that I find myself doing all the time — ya know, stuff that happens over and over again. In my case, it’s opening cans of gravy, trying to find my iPhone (if I had a nickel for every time I asked El Hub to “call my phone for me…”), wanting another pair of shoes that I probably wouldn’t be able to walk in, and, of course, writing lists like these. 🙂

We probably all have things like that, right? — things we feel like we do over and over again. Well, here are nine of mine. I’d also love to read some of yours.

“I feel like I’m always…” Read more…

Essence Quattro Eyeshadow in XOXO DEAR ESSENCE QUATTRO EYESHADOW
I’VE GOT NOTHING BUT XOXO’S FOR YOU

The Essence Quattro Eyeshadow palette in XOXO reminds me of Mariah Carey’s performance in Precious.

Why? Because it’s also shockingly good.

Let’s be honest — after Glitter, for which Mimi won a Razzie Award for Worst Actress despite basically playing herself in the film, I didn’t really expect much from her return to the big screen, but as a die-hard fan (I still have the Vision of Love single floating around here somewhere…on tape), I had to give her a second chance. Read more…

MAC Opulash Mascara in Optimum Black MAC OPULASH OPTIMUM BLACK MASCARA
MORE OF A GOOD THING WITH EVEN BETTER CURL HOLD

It looks like Prep + Prime Powder and Turquatic aren’t the only MAC products getting makeovers next month.

Last year’s totally tubular MAC Opulash mascara started out, like, totally rad, but now it’s getting even radder with a souped-up sibling called Opulash Optimum Black ($16).

It’s basically like the original, except in a darker, more intense shade of black.

I’ve used the original Opulash on and off since the first time I tried it last year, and I like the look. It’s very distinct, with uniform thickness from lash root to tip.

The original one’s also great with lifts — like Patrick Swazye was for Jennifer Gray in the last scene from Dirty Dancing (one of the BEST moments in movie history!) — and I reach for it sometimes when I want a lifted, even fringe with good volume. It delivers pumped up, noticeble lashes that are just shy of drag. Read more…

Outfit of the Day, Vol. 4: Black and White for My BFF’s Baby Shower

July 30th, 2011 by Karen 60 Comments

I’ve been feeling kinda chunky and bloated all day long (damn you, PMS!) and came this close to wearing sweats and a tank top to my BFF’s baby shower this afternoon, but I didn’t want to break any unwritten party etiquette rules like “Thou shalt not wear stretchy pants to events celebrating major life changes,” or anything like that, so I nixed the idea, as tempting as it was.

Instead, I pulled out one of my favorite dresses, a black cotton strapless A-line I picked up years ago at Gap.

I love how forgiving it is. Ah, sweet, wonderful A-line… Fitted at the top, it gradually widens toward the hem to form the shape of a capital letter A. They’re one of my favorite cuts — so great if you’re trying to disguise your tum and/or bum but still want to show a little bit of shape.

Win a $50 Sephora eGift card from Makeup and Beauty Blog
Rise and shine, morning glory. Happy Saturday. 🙂

I hope your weekend got off to a good start. It’s a little foggy out here today, both literally and figuratively. I see fog outside my window and feel foggy in the head, but it’s nothing a little coffee can’t cure.

What’s on your agenda for today? Doing anything fun? Right now I’m just getting ready to drive out to the East Bay for my friend Jen’s baby shower. That should be fun. Tabs is going to stay here at the office, though, and hold down the fort.

Other than that, nothing new to report. I did see Cowboys & Aliens last night, but I didn’t think it was as good as I thought it would be… Shirtless Daniel Craig, however, was exceptional. Truly top notch. If they make a sequel, they should just call it Shirtless Cowboy & Aliens and cut right to the chase, yeehaw!

Now I reckon it’s time for this cowgirl to giddy up and git some caffeine. While I do that, how about we start another giveaway?

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog! My name is Karen, and I’m a freelance writer obsessed with makeup.

Makeup and Beauty Blog features daily product reviews, makeup tips and beauty news — like an interactive version of a monthly print magazine, except with occasional pictures of my cat.
