Win a $50 Sephora eGift card from Makeup and Beauty Blog
Right now I smell like cilantro because I was just outside tending to the garden on the deck.

Greetings, young lady! I got a late start again today… That seems to be my new Saturday slogan: “I got a late start again today.” 🙂

Tabs has decided that cilantro is no longer the new catnip, and he totally ignores it now when we’re outside. And that means that the plants are overgrown, so I had to pick some off and trim it back…which made me hungry for Chipotle (their rice).

I think I might go for lunch to get a veggie burrito.

Oh! Here’s a fun fact: at Chipotle, if you order the veggie burrito, if you really and truly want it to be veg, you have to get it with the black beans, because they use bacon to make their pinto beans.

They don’t always mention that when you order the veggie burrito. I’ve seen it before…

So what are you up to today? Doing anything fun? I don’t have anything going on other than house chores and errands. Nothing exciting.

If I can sneak away for an hour, I’d like to swing by Nordstrom again to return the top I bought yesterday under duress. It looked cute on the rack and has a cutout back, which I thought I’d wear with a tank top underneath. I didn’t try it on in the store — it was one of those stress purchases — but I should have, because with it on I look like a trucker from the ’80s.

I didn’t notice in the store that the sides are also cut out, like how those rocker metal guys from the ’80s would cut out the sides of their shirts? That’s what it looks like. I look like a little rocker, biker girl with it on, and it’s not flattering at all.

Anywho, I hope your weekend got off to a good start, and maybe today’s giveaway will help. 🙂

A Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway!

While I’m at Nordie’s, I’m also gonna check out some of the new makeup from fall, like Bobbi Brown Marrakesh Chic, Lancôme’s Fall 2011 collection and MAC Me Over (the Shadesticks turned out to be really long lasting).

Now, on with the show!

What are you doing with your makeup today? — you get the idea.

Which Limited Edition Makeup or Beauty Products Would You Like to See Made Permanent?

August 25th, 2011 by Karen 117 Comments

I live for new seasonal makeup and beauty launches, and finding a new color or product to obsess over thrills me from the top of my Lloyd Christmas bangs to the bottom of my flat arches. 🙂

But there are downsides to obsessively stalking new releases, in particular limited edition ones, and one of them has to do with time. Once limited edition products end their time in the sun, very often, like star-crossed lovers, never the twain shall meet again.

On rare occasions, however, the pigment-loving powers-that-be grant a product cosmetic clemency, either choosing to release it again in a future collection, or by giving it a permanent seat at the counter. More often than not, though, when it comes to the limited edition products we love love, we’re forced to stockpile, Hoarders-style, combing The Cosmetics Company Stores and eBay.

Le sigh…

Wouldn’t it just be easier if every brand made their bestsellers permanent?

Outfit of the Day, Vol. 5: Basics with a Twist for a Casual Date

August 22nd, 2011 by Karen 47 Comments

Last week for date night El Hub and I went to the market! — the farmers’ market, in the nearby town of San Rafael.

Now, style icons like Carrie Bradshaw can probably strut down pot-holed streets and weave between vegetable stands in five-inch Manolos and marabou feather coats without skipping a beat, but I opted for more casual comfort in a tank top and jeans.

And basics, of course, don’t have to be sloppy or boring, not with the help of a few easy accessories.

Spruce Up Jeans and a Tank Top with…

  1. A tote bag in a fun print — This spacious blue and white one from Kate Spade is perfect for sightseeing because of how much it holds — everything from my wallet, to my camera, my makeup and all the late-summer produce I love (peaches, pluots and plums, yes please!). Plus, the colors match my jeans and top.
  2. A pair of colorful shoes — Don’t these dark purple Seychelles sandals pop beneath the outfit’s blue and white? Their comfy, low heel makes them perfect for standing in long lines at the kettle corn booth. 🙂
  3. A large textured scarf in neutral colors — Temps are falling around here after dusk, but it’s not cold enough yet for a jacket. This wide, striped scarf doesn’t just add texture to the outfit; it also doubles as a light wrap when there’s a chill in the air.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, August 22

August 22nd, 2011 by Karen 71 Comments

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 182. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Getting better by the second. I’m still a little groggy from staying up too late last night (two words: True Blood!), but I spent some time writing in my journal this morning. I worked on a list of things I’m thankful for, and lists like that always put me in a good mood.

  3. One thing displayed/posted on the front of your fridge?
  4. A refrigerator magnet with a picture of a guitar, a banjo and a fiddle; above them is a caption that reads, “Country Music: Branson, MO.” The funny thing is that I’ve never been to Missouri, and I can’t remember when/where I got the magnet.

  5. Your favorite pair of earrings?
  6. These dangling silver feather earrings by Kris Nations. My mom gave them to me for my birthday. 🙂

  7. What are some of the projects you’re working on now (professional or otherwise)?
  8. To totally rearrange my home office and implement a better way to store my gadget gear and photography equipment, and to get in better shape (an ongoing project).

  9. One of your most memorable moments of 2011 so far?
  10. Visiting the MAC Innovation Centre in Toronto earlier this year. That was definitely something I’ll never forget. Speaking of MAC, the Bloggers’ Obsessions Collection will be going, going gone soon, so if you’ve been considering bringing home one any of the products, you might want to move on them sooner than later.

  11. Vegas, baby! — yea or nay?
  12. Yea, but only for a maximum of 72 hours at a time. I’m not a big gambler, so I start getting antsy after spending a few hours in the casinos. I do love the shows, restaurants, buffets (ZOMG! The Bellagio’s buffet is the TRUTH!), spas and shopping, though, but even those get kind of old after a while.

  13. When was the last time you watched an outdoor fireworks display?
  14. I honestly can’t remember. I didn’t see one last Fourth of July, and I don’t remember seeing one the year before that. Hmm… It’s been a while.

  15. Your favorite weeknight quickie meal?
  16. This delicious pasta in avocado basil pesto dish I’ve been making lately. It only takes about 15 minutes to prepare, and even though it’s veggie, El Hub thinks it’s great.

  17. Eyes/Lips/Cheeks:
  18. Nothing yet, but I see some products from the MAC Me Over collection in my immediate future…

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. I’m just trying to keep things simple this week by concentrating on my food and exercise plans. I’ve been logging everything into the My Fitness Pal iPhone app, which I love. Thanks for recommending it, by the way.

Good morning, cutie patootie. 🙂 Guess who started watching True Blood on her laptop late last night in bed (allegedly, I was only going to watch it for 10 minutes). An hour later…

It was quite the bootylicious episode, wasn’t it? Hasn’t there been a lot more man bum than usual this season? No complaints, of course. I’m just sayin’.

Let me know how you’re doing this morning by filling out this week’s Monday Poll, and feel free to share your thoughts on that scene from True Blood with Alcide (you know the one I’m talking about).

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. One thing displayed/posted on the front of your fridge?
3. Your favorite pair of earrings?
4. What are some of the projects you’re working on now (professional or otherwise)?
5. One of your most memorable moments of 2011 so far?
6. Vegas, baby! — yea or nay?
7. When was the last time you watched an outdoor fireworks display?
8. Your favorite weeknight quickie meal?
9. Eyes/Lips/Cheeks:
10. Weekly goals:

You have a great week, okay? And I’ll try to do the same.

Tabs for the Urban Decay Book of Shadows Volume 4.5

My goodness, Tabs sure had a busy week of kitty modeling, but he turned in some top-notch performances for Urban Decay, Make Up For Ever, NARS, Smashbox and Sula Beauty.

Sometimes I complain about how much work is involved in being his professional and personal assistant/human, but I have to admit — the cat’s got game.

Hope you had a nice weekend. Tabs and I will see you again soon. 🙂

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

August 21st, 2011 by Karen 3 Comments

Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

I do declare, I’m not quite awake yet, young lady. It must be something in the air.

Rise and shine, morning glory! How did you sleep? I slept well enough, but it’s a little chilly here right now — not cold, but colder than it’s been in the mornings. I think I even see fog outside my window…

What the heck is up with that!? Mr. Fall, you can stay wherever you are, thank you very much, and just leave me and my cat alone. We prefer our oak trees more with leaves than without.

What a wonderful weekend so far, not that I’ve done a single productive thing, but I have been able to spend some time with El Hub. Yesterday we even had our dinner with Tabs on the deck. It was nothing fancy — just a lightly grilled tilapia with a side of steamed rice and a glass of white wine. Tabs, of course, being on a high-protein diet, skipped the rice and wine (and the froyo that followed for dessert). 🙂

How’s it going out yonder way? Is it still hot and summery there? I remember the hottest summers I ever spent were in Davis where I went to school. It would top 100 degrees (°F) for days on end there. Sometimes weeks. It’s a wonder any plants survived.

Here in northern Marin County, it averages about 80 during the summer months, which is just fine with me. Every once in a while we’ll get a hot day near 100, but they’re few and far between.

Isn’t it annoying how fast this summer’s flown by? I know we always say that, “My, how time flies,” but it’s true. And why is that? What makes time seem to go by quicker the older we get?

I don’t like it one bit…

As a matter of fact, I think I’ll stay right here in this week for at least the rest of the day. 🙂

Essie Brand New Bag for Fall 2011 PET ASSISTANTS, IT’S IN THE BAG
THE ESSIE BRAND NEW BAG COLLECTION FOR FALL 2011

If you’re considering a career as an executive pet assistant, learn from my mistakes. Read your employment contract carefully before you sign (and maybe even enlist the help of an attorney); otherwise, you just might find yourself at the mercy of a demanding diva.

Apparently, my lawyer and I missed the clause in my contract that grants Tabs final wardrobe, nail color and accessories approval. Honestly, if I’d known all of the bullsh*t baggage that would come with this gig beforehand, I probably would’ve just gone to law school instead. Read more…

Smashbox Girls on Film DON’T BE CAMERA SHY WITH
SMASHBOX GIRLS ON FILM

Does Duran Duran’s ode to celluloid sirens have anything to do with Smashbox’s new eight-piece Girls on Film collection for fall?

Perhaps, but either way, I’m just glad the references aren’t more obvious.

I remember being very, very confused by the Girls on Film video when it came out… My eight-year-old mind just couldn’t put the pieces together. I mean, why was that nurse giving that husky dude a massage? More importantly, why was she doing it in a boxing ring?

Hell, I’m 36 now, and I just have to assume that some questions are better left unanswered. Read more…

Becca Lost Weekend Collection WE’RE TAKING A HIGHWAY TO THE NEUTRAL ZONE
WITH THE BECCA LOST WEEKEND COLLECTION

Becca fans, this fall we’re shifting into neutrals with the new Becca Lost Weekend Collection (products $23-49 each), and that means one thing…

Road trip! 🙂

Where are we headed? Nobody knows, but do we really care? Nope! Not with Becca’s new eight-piece release of earthy tan, caramel, chocolate, peach and pink shades to keep us company on the open road.

I briefly looked at three of the products from the collection this afternoon; I plan to test drive these and more of the products from the release over the next week, but for now I thought I’d share some pics. Read more…

Burts Bees Honey Shea Sugar Scrub THE BUZZ ON BURT’S BEES NEW
HONEY & SHEA SUGAR SCRUB IS GOOD

How sweet! Burt’s industrious bees made us a new scrub, and like his fabulous Cranberry & Pomegranate one, this one’s also 100% natural.

If there hadn’t been a warning on the side of Burt’s Bees Honey & Shea Sugar Scrub ($13 for an 8-oz. tub) stating that it’s “Not a food — do not consume,” I would have spread some on my toast.

Doesn’t it look delicious (a little like apple sauce)? And I think it smells yummy, too — fresh and light, like raw sugar and honey.

Following in the footsteps of its Cranberry & Pomegranate predecessor, which I first fell in love with a year ago this fall, Honey & Shea wasn’t tested on animals, and it doesn’t contain any parabens, phthalates or petrochemicals. I’d been turning to Burt’s rich, moisturizing Pomo-Cran scrub whenever I needed to get my exfoliation on, but as much as my dry skin loves the hydrating heavy oils it contains, I know it’s not for everyone. Sula Beauty Lip & Cheek Tint BE A BLUSHING BEAUTY
WITH SULA BEAUTY LIP & CHEEK TINT

You know that light flush that sometimes reddens your cheeks after a quick sprint, an embarrassing introduction or, um, a particularly bootylicious make-out session with a certain strapping viking vampire stricken with amnesia? That’s how my cheeks and lips look when I’m wearing Sula Beauty’s Lip & Cheek Tint in It’s Not Me, It’s You ($8).

I’ve been waiting for a reason to upgrade my opinion of the cruelty free Sula Beauty line, and these chubby cheek and lip creams just might be it. I thought that the last couple of products I tried from the line skirted the border between hit/miss, but with their adorable packaging and natural ingredients, they were products I really wanted to like. The gorgeous gadgeteers at Urban Decay headquarters know that technology plus makeup equals fun, so they engineered a little something special for us with their latest limited edition Book of Shadows: Volume IV ($64).

This installment in the storied line comes with plenty of makeup, as well as five QR (Quick Response) codes that you can plug into your iPhone or Android phone to access five online video tutorials featuring products from the palette.

The palette’s a holiday release, so it won’t be available for a while (I’m trying to pin down the exact date), but here are a few pictures and swatches to wet your whistle. Read more…

Estée Lauder Pure Colour Sensuous Rouge…

A sensuous rouge? Is that like Zorro or Robin Hood?

Wait — oh, rooozh. I thought I read something else. I pictured a handsome roguish blush pan whispering into my ear (it had an accent like Antonio Banderas), “Hello, señorita. May I come over tonight, so I can make sweet love to your cheeks?”

Okay…chances are that’s not what Estée Lauder was going for when they developed this new line of 12 moisturizing lipsticks ($28 each). It doesn’t arrive on makeup counters till fall, but the colors are available for pre-sale online now. Read more…

NARS Larger Than Life Eyeliner NARS LARGER THAN LIFE EYELINER
DOESN’T STOP FOR BREAKDOWNS

Heavy traffic makes my inner crazy come out. I know it’s not helpful to get worked up over traffic jams, but it happens just the same.

Like last week, I had a mini-nervous breakdown in bumper-to-bumper traffic on Lombard Street in San Francisco. It had taken me 45 minutes to drive four blocks in the city, and all I wanted to do was get home. At one point I looked outside my window at a boy walking past my car on the sidewalk, and I just lost it. Tears, sobbing — the whole shebang.

It wasn’t just the traffic, though. I was also wearing uncomfortably tight skinny jeans and having a really, really rough writing day. Read more…

Rise and shine, morning glory. 🙂 I hope you slept well.

Tabs has been keeping new hours lately, staying up later at night and sleeping in later in the mornings. Right now he’s conked out at the top of his cat tower, with his cute kitty tail poking out through the hole in the bottom of the cubby. That’s sort of like his version of a hotel room’s “Do not disturb” sign, so I’ll leave him be while I have my coffee, and you and I catch up.

Other than dinner at a Japanese restaurant I’d never been to before, my Friday night was blissfully uneventful. Dinner was great, even though I was a little concerned right after placing my order…

“I’m sorry,” the waiter replied, visibly distraught. “We’re out of the regular white rice tonight.”

The words hung over the table for a few seconds before I could formulate a thought.

Wait — what? How does a Japanese restaurant run out of rice? Isn’t that like an Italian restaurant running out of pasta or a burger joint running out of buns?

I shifted uneasily in my seat looking over at the chefs working behind the bar. “So what are you guys using for the sushi?”

“Oh, I can get you some of the sushi rice,” the waiter answered, his eyes lighting up at the suggestion. “Would you like a bowl of that?”

“Uh…sure. Is it just regular sticky rice?”

“Mm hmm. Would you like a bowl of the sushi rice instead?”

Instead? Instead of what? “Yes, please.” This is weird. “Thank you.”

LOL! It was just a little confusing at the time, but I get it now. The steamed white rice they serve in bowls at the tables is slightly different than the steamed white rice they use to make sushi.

Anywho, it’s still early here. Cut me some slack. 🙂

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, August 15

August 15th, 2011 by Karen 79 Comments

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 181. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. I’m like Cesar Millan right now, yo, filled with calm, assertive energy… I hope it lasts because it feels great. 🙂

  3. What’s your least favorite vegetable?
  4. Okra, blech! So hairy… So slimy… It’s my nightmare veggie.

  5. When was the last time you took a midday nap?
  6. About a week ago on the plane ride back to SF from San Diego. I almost always conk out on flights. I think planes vibrate on the same frequency that those chairs do that lull babies to sleep. Zzzz…

  7. Do you ever/still rock scrunchies?
  8. Yes, but only in my car (I keep one around the gear shifter to use when hair gets on my nerves when I’m driving) and in my bathroom (for when I wash my face).

  9. What’s the best piece of relationship advice you ever received?
  10. Don’t date a DJ.

  11. I love it when…
  12. …everything just falls into place.

  13. Sleeveless denim vests: yea or nay?
  14. Lawd, forgive me, but around 1995, yea, I wore ’em. I had one that I got on sale at the Gap, and I wore it so much in college that it stars in about half of my pics from that era.

These days, though, no way. If I’m gonna wear denim above the waist, it had better have sleeves. That’s all I’m sayin’.

  15. Have you ever given yourself highlights at home?
  16. Yup, when I was in high school. I used one of those kits with the plastic cap and the dots that you pull the hair through with a hook. I remember walking around the house like that, with the hairs sticking out of the cap, and my brother just totally cracking up!

  17. What would you do if a first date asked you to split the check?
  18. Back when I was dating, I would have paid my half, high tailed it out of there as fast as I could, and said “adios” to the guy. I’m old fashioned that way, I guess.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. Just one this week — to keep hope alive! I hope we all have a great week.

Happy Monday, holmes. Wait — please no True Blood spoilers just yet, okay? I still have to watch last night’s episode.

But was it good…? You can tell me that. 🙂

Hope you’re having a lovely morning. I feel pretty good so far. Sure, my to-do list is about two miles long, but c’est la vie.

Before you dive headlong into your day, do you have a minute to catch up with the Monday Poll?

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. What’s your least favorite vegetable?
3. When was the last time you took a midday nap?
4. Do you ever/still rock scrunchies?
5. What’s the best piece of relationship advice you ever received?
6. I love it when…
7. Sleeveless denim vests: yea or nay?
8. Have you ever given yourself highlights at home?
9. What would you do if a first date asked you to split the check?
10. Weekly goals:

Here’s to hoping for rays of sunshine while sending you waves of hope. 🙂
