Have No Hot Pink Fear, Laura Mercier’s Gel Lip Colour in Dollface Is Here

January 30th, 2012 by Karen 32 Comments

The scenario: weekend brunch with the girls. After a short stack of banana pancakes, three cups of coffee and two solid hours spent laughing, chatting and catching up, it’s time for a quick touch-up before heading out. If you happen to pull hot pink Laura Mercier Gel Lip Colour in Dollface ($22) from your purse, what happens next could sound a lot like this…

BFF: “Ooh!”

You: “I know, right? It’s Laura Mercier’s Dollface lipstick.”

BFF: “LOVE the color, but I dunno… Do you think I could ever wear something that bright?”

You: “Oh, yes! For sure! It’s way more bark than bite. It looks super bright in the tube and goes on like a really sheer, shiny hot pink, but when it mellows out it looks like a lip stain.

“I like it… I don’t like having to reapply it every hour or so — that’s kind of a pain — but it’s very hydrating, and my lips are dry, so it’s great for that. Oh, and it tastes and smells a little like vanilla, which I like.

“Here, wanna try? I promise I don’t have cooties. 🙂 Wipe the tip on that napkin over there… And use my mirror.”

Next thing you know, grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s after brunch gets put on the back burner, and you and your girls are making a beeline for the nearest Laura counter so they can pick up Dollface, too.

Yes, I speak from experience.

Beyond its uncanny ability to inspire sudden changes in plans, Dollface also possesses the power to seduce wearers into thinking that it, and the rest of Laura’s Gel Lip Colours, are among the slickest, lightest weight, most comfortable lipsticks you and your lips have ever kissed.

Dollface doesn’t just feel smooth. It feels smoove…like that time you “accidentally” ate that bowl of buttercream frosting you were supposed to use for the cake you baked and then, as you licked the smooth, rich frosting from your lips, realized that — holy wow! — there was a ton of butter in that.

Again, I speak from experience. 🙂

And maybe I’ve watched way too much Masterpiece Theater lately, but I think there’s also something very Downton Abbey about Dollface, especially after about 20 minutes, when it settles down and the shine gives way to a soft, pink stain with a careless whisper — wait, did I just say “careless whisper?” — of sheen. I can totally see the Crawley girls wearing it whilst sipping tea, or perhaps while touring the gardens on a hazy spring day.

Seriously, does the sun ever come out on that show?

LORAC’s New Lipgloss Combines the Benefits of a Lipstick and Gloss: LORAC Lips With Benefits

January 27th, 2012 by Karen 28 Comments

How’s about a creamy hybrid lipstick/gloss with the texture of a $27 Dior Crème de Gloss and a price like a MAC Cremesheen Glass ($18.50)?

And then, what if we take 50 cents off the price and make it an even $18?

Tada! Say hello to LORAC’s new Lips With Benefits, a line of shiny, non-sticky lipglosses that feel like heaven on my lips. They combine the medium-coverage lipstick look of a Dior Crème De Gloss with the feel of a non-stick gloss, all wrapped up in zebra stripes (so cute!).

LORAC even infused them with antioxidants, namely açaí berry, pomegranate extract, and vitamins C and E, and added a strong brown sugar scent that I like. Officially, it’s described as a sweet crème brûlée. Not too sweet or artificial, the scent lingers on my lips for a good 20 minutes.

So far I’ve played with two of the colors from the line, fresh pink Josh and rosy brown Chuck, and this is kinda weird: earlier tonight I saw that Sephora.com only lists four colors total — Josh, Nick (a light pink shimmer), Alex (a berry) and Mark (a neutral peach). Chuck is not one of them.

Hmm… I’m not sure why, but I’m hoping that Chuck makes an appearance soon because I think he’s a fabulous “your lips but better” shade.

Good Taste? These Clarins Spring 2012 Joli Rouge Lipsticks Have It

January 27th, 2012 by Karen 18 Comments

Wearing Clarins Joli Rouge Lipstick in Poppy Red

Quick! — your three favorite flavors of fruity candy and gum?

If grape is on your list, these Clarins Joli Rouge Lipsticks from the new spring 2012 Colour Breeze Collection ($24) were made to chew for you.

Especially if you like your grape candy with extra servings of shiny, moisturizing lipstick on the side.

Available in four faintly grape-scented and flavored shades, Poppy Red, Baby Pink, Sheer Pink Magnolia and Sheer Pink Coral are more than just delicious. They’re also creamy and — no, not nutritious. 🙂 I was gonna say rich.

I can’t get enough of the two shades I’ve tried, Poppy Red and Sheer Pink Magnolia. Luckily, I like the flavor and scent, which fade after about 15 minutes of wear, and I don’t find them cloying, too artificial or overwhelmingly strong.

These Burberry Beauty Lip Glow Glosses Drench Lips in Moisture and Shine

January 26th, 2012 by Karen 17 Comments

Wearing Burberry Beauty Lip Glow Gloss in Nude Rose No. 14

If the punchy pink Lip Covers Burberry bestowed upon counters for spring/summer 2012 were a little too pigmented for ya, not to worry, Burberry beauty. The line’s added two new long-wearing Lip Glow glosses ($27 each) that sheer look neat.

Semi-sheer Hibiscus No. 13 and sheer rosy pink Nude Rose No. 14 are like tropical waterfalls, drenching lips in moisture and shine, and what they may lack in pigment (say, compared to the epic holiday Lip Glows), they make up for in casual elegance.

I like wearing them on top of the Lip Covers for added shine and to extend the staying power of both products, but I also like how uncomplicated and pretty they look on their own.

The Burberry Lip Cover Lipsticks: 3 New Pinks for Spring and Summer

January 25th, 2012 by Karen 35 Comments

Wearing Burberry Lip Cover in Tulip Pink No. 27

You know you’ve seen one too many episodes of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills when the first words out of your mouth after seeing these new Burberry Lip Covers are, “Man! Lisa Vanderpump would cut a b*tch for these pinks!”

If you don’t watch the show (it’s like Twinkies for my brain), Lisa is the resident Queen B, and she happens to love everything .

As do I (but not quite to Lisa Vanderpump’s level). 🙂

The color plays a major part in Burberry’s new Spring/Summer collection, which, by the way, I’m currently lurving (have you met Pale Barley yet?). Three of the four silky new Lip Cover Lipsticks ($30 each) in the release are shades of playful pink, while the fourth is a peach called Golden Peach No. 29.

If you like your pink lippies light, smooth and moisturizing like a fine silk slip, ding ding, ding! — we have a winner here.

The Burberry Lip Cover Lipsticks: 3 New Pinks for Spring and Summer

  • Tulip Pink No. 27 — To my eye, Tulip Pink No. 27 is the lightest of these pinks and has the coolest tones, but Burberry was careful not to lower the color temperature so far that warmer-toned gals (like moi) wouldn’t be able to pull it off. I think it’s a perfect pink nude lip to pair with smokey eyes.
  • Devon Sunset No. 28 — Compared to Tulip Pink, Devon Sunset burns hot. It’s a creamy pinkish coral with a dash of warming yellow, and I swear I feel brighter when I have it on my lips. Cuties who love coral may want to add it to their list.
  • Primrose Hill Pink No. 30 — While bright for Burberry, I still think this hot pink stays true to the collection’s overall aesthetic. It has a soft shine that keeps it from overstepping its bounds, and I think the finish gives it an air of elegance. Plus, it matches my hair. 🙂

What Do You Think? Has MAC Released a Shade of Red For Every Heart?

January 25th, 2012 by Karen 63 Comments

MAC A Shade of Red For Every Heart

MAC A Shade of Red For Every Heart

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, love. It’s one of my favorite holidays, and not just because it makes it totally legit to eat an entire 1-pound box of See’s Candies in a single sitting (something I’ve done multiple times).

How many pounds of chocolate candy are sold during Valentine’s week in the U.S.? (Click here for the answer)

I also love it for the red!

It’s everywhere — red valentines, red hearts, red candy and decorations. Oh, and let’s not forget lips.

MAC A Shade of Red For Every HeartAnd should you need a little help deciding on a particular shade of red to wear on or around the Big V, MAC has nine suggestions: A Shade of Red For Every Heart. The nine-piece release for lips and nails, available now online, includes some seriously saturated reds, some of them brights and others dark crimsons, and it even features a few former lovers like Cockney Lipstick (remember this beauty from Euristocrats 2?).

When it comes to lips, it’s hard (although not utterly impossible) to go wrong with red; it makes my willpower wilt. Have a look at these four items, which are some of my faves from the launch, and let me know if anything shoots an arrow of lust through your makeup-lovin’ heart.

From the left: Lustre Lipstick in Cockney ($14.50), Cremesheen Lipstick in Hang-Up ($14.50), Prolongwear Lipglass in Driven By Love ($18.50) and Prolongwear Lipglass in Lasting Achievement ($18.50)

Bucking for Best Dressed of Spring 2012: Tarte Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss

January 24th, 2012 by Karen 35 Comments

tarte maracuja divine shine lip gloss (7)

And the award for Best Dressed Lipgloss goes to…

The Tarte Maracuja Divine Shines ($21), yay!

[INSERT RAUCUS APPLAUSE]

How exciting! 🙂 I love it when something really girly and pretty wins.

The 10-piece release of moisturizing lip plumpers just launched with Tarte’s spring 2012 collection, and I can’t get enough of that floral design.

tarte maracuja divine shine lip gloss (4)

But what about the other categories, like Best Hydrating Lipgloss, Best Lipgloss with a Funny Name and Best Wear Time? Does Maracuja deserve any of those nominations?

Well, perhaps one of them…

But first, what the heck is maracuja?

The answer to that: passion fruit. Maracujá oil is derived from the seeds, and it’s added to Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss. Tarte claims that it makes these glosses highly moisturizing with a high dose of essential fatty acids and vitamin C.

Maracuja not maracujoRANDOM FUN FACT — While Cujo, the rabid St. Bernard from Stephen King’s book of the same name, bears no resemblance to these glosses, it is very easy to mistakenly type “maracujo” instead of “maracuja.” In fact, I’ve done it at least 10 times.

These do feel fairly moisturizing to me, but after wearing them for a few hours, I notice some flakes…

The Clarins Spring 2012 Prodige Lip Glosses in Candy and Blackberry Smell So Good That I Can Hardly Bear It

January 20th, 2012 by Karen 14 Comments

Wearing Clarins Prodige Lip Gloss in Blackberry

Yum, Clarins! Whose idea was it to make these new Prodige Lip Glosses in Blackberry and Candy taste and smell like red gummi bears.

Genius! He/she is a total prodigy, haha!

Sorry, couldn’t resist. 🙂

And the colors? So pigmented, and yet I still like the way they pair with the soft, springy blues in the Eye Quartet Mineral Palette in Blue Sky and the sheer Instant Light Blush in Coral Tonic.

Who’d a thunk it?
