Despite Our Differences (in Color Temp), I’m Warming Up to the MAC Me Over Collection’s Lady Grey Quad

August 29th, 2011 by Karen 23 Comments

One of my favorite pieces from the new MAC Me Over collection (on counters now) turned out to be something I never expected to like.

“How cool!” I said the first time I spotted the Lady Grey quad’s greenish gray, and I meant it both in terms of wow factor, as I thought the shade was subtle, but interesting and different, and color temp, because like many of the other colors in Icelandic Cool, the sub-collection to which Lady Grey belongs, it leans cool.

Right away the color, and the other shades of green, gray, beige, white, taupe and purple that comprise Icelandic Cool, melted my heart, but I thought I’d have a difficult time getting the cool-toned shade to cooperate with my warm-toned skin.

Still, it didn’t stop me from trying.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Oh Baby Lipglass

August 19th, 2011 by Karen 22 Comments

I gotta give snaps to MBB reader Heidi (and her fabulous kitteh Missy!) for introducing me to today’s MAC Unsung Hero, Oh Baby Lipglass ($14.50).

A few months ago Heidi urged me to give this sheer-to-medium coverage bronze gloss a go, so I did, and now it’s my JAM!

Oh Baby kisses lips with a glittery golden bronze that looks particularly great paired with bronze and teal eyeshadows.

Which of These MAC Me Over Lipglasses Came with Me to Lunch?

August 10th, 2011 by Karen 50 Comments

mac curvaceous lipglass

“I wonder if I’m burning enough calories to get a cupcake.” That’s the thought that kept going through my head in San Francisco this afternoon as I shivered on my way to and from a late work lunch. It was freezing in the city! And all I had on was a dress, a light jacket and sandals.

Not good.

It’s my own dang fault for forgetting how chilly SF can get in August… On my way home, I stopped by Neiman Marcus to warm my heart with new fall makeup, specifically a yummy Le Métier eyeshadow kaleidoscope kit with pretty purples and bronzes (I’ll post a pic soon).

Before I headed into the city, I tried on some of the Lipglasses from the upcoming MAC Me Over collection. These are $14.50 each ($17.50 CDN) and arrive on counter a little later this month.

I really like Curvaceous. That’s the one I wore to lunch today. I think it looks kinda cool-ish in the pic below, but it leans more toward neutral on my lips.

Take a look, and let me know what ya think. 🙂

MAC Me Over Because There’s Something Here for Everyone

August 10th, 2011 by Karen 57 Comments

mac me over

For my losing entry in the contest that eventually led to the upcoming MAC Me Over collection, I leaped into the sea from atop a giant rock in Oahu’s Waimea Bay while screaming, “MAC me over because I’m ready for a new adventure!” into a small waterproof video camera.

Actually…I was standing on an outcropping only about a foot off the water when I jumped. Oh, and I also flubbed my line. 🙂

I like to think of MAC’s fall release as the People’s Collection (raises fist!), but not because it was part of any underground revolutions. The collection’s imagery showcases dreamy before and after pics from the six men and women picked after last fall’s contest for the collection. In the contest, MAC fans submitted pictures and videos of themselves completing the phrase, “MAC me over because…”

From the submissions, MAC Creative Director James Gager picked the lucky winners. Pretty cool, yah?

The 51-piece collection is, in a word, MASSIVE! It launches August 25 here in North America and internationally this September with a bevy of brushes and limited edition and repromoted makeup for eyes, lips, face, cheeks and nails.

MAC divided the release into three sub-collections — Icelandic Cool (comprised of cool-toned shades), New Black (dark and bold colors) and MAC Basics (pink and nude shades hand-picked by MAC artists) — making it all fairly easy to navigate.

I swatched a few of what I thought were eye-catching items from each of the three sub-collections this morning. Holla at me if anything that gets you in the gut. 🙂

MAC Me Over Collection Lipstick Swatches Starring My Secret Lover (That’s What You Are)

August 9th, 2011 by Karen 44 Comments

mac me over lipstick swatches

Kiss me, you impetuous fool! But wait — let me apply my lipstick first. 🙂

Just some quick swatches of a few of the lipsticks from the upcoming MAC Me Over collection on NC42 lips/skin (arriving on North American counters Aug. 25; internationally this September).

I left Tabs with specific instructions to swatch and post anything MAC-related while I was gone, but because he’s a cat, he never listens to a word I say.

You know how it goes…

MAC Unsung Heroes: Mulch Eyeshadow

August 4th, 2011 by Karen 34 Comments

You know how in boy bands there’s always that one dude whose name you can never remember? He was usually stuck in one of the back corners, probably put there by a choreographer because perhaps his high kicks weren’t quite up to par?

Well, MAC Mulch would not be that guy.

If it were, say, one of the members of New Kids on the Block, Mulch would be Jonathan. Doesn’t hog the limelight, but you’d still tape his picture up in your locker. He’s not quite Jordan (MAC Freshwater) or Joey (MAC Chrome Yellow), yet he’s still an important member of the band.

Shimmery brown Mulch has been one of my go-to neutrals since 2007 (I remember because I wrote about it on the blog). MAC describes it as reddish brown with bronzy pearl, but it reminds me more of a bronzy milk chocolate brown.

I think it really complements warm-toned skin — oh, and this is unrelated, but I’ve seen it look incredible on gals with hazel eyes.

MAC Unsung Heroes: The Cremestick Liners

August 3rd, 2011 by Karen 16 Comments

Standouts in MAC’s Lip Pencil line often steal the spotlight (Subculture, Chestnut and Spice spring to mind), but the MAC Cremestick Liners ($14.50 each) also deserve much love.

I’ve been obsessively collecting these creamy twist-up lip pencil liners for years, and I think my lips are better for it.

The regular MAC Lip Pencil line has some stellar colors, but I find myself missing my Cremesticks when my lips feel dry. Softer, smoother and slightly thicker than the Lip Pencils, the Cremesticks are all about comfort and hydration, which makes ’em perfect for lip TLC.

I love them layered beneath glosses, both to increase gloss wear time and to alter (and invent new) colors; I do it all the time with Lipglasses, Cremesheen Glasses and the Lipgelées.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Sable Eyeshadow

August 1st, 2011 by Karen 57 Comments

American SableMAC Sable Eyeshadow ($15) and I go way back. I think it was maybe the fourth or fifth eyeshadow I brought home from the line, and I remember the day we met because of the hot guy in drag who helped me pick it out.

He looked fierce working behind the MAC counter, like straight off a runway, and I asked him what he was wearing on his eyes.

He said it was Sable, a bronzy golden plum with a frosty finish, and he considered it one of the most flexible MAC shadows, saying it went with just about everything. I’d already decided to get it when he said he thought it would really pop on my skin.

Since then Sable and I have been plummy partners in crime.
