MAC Lavender Whip Cremesheen Lipstick and Ever So Rich Glass: This Purple Lip Combo Reigns

February 6th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

Lavender Whip lipstick and Ever So Rich gloss are two products that don’t reveal their true colors until they’ve been applied.

And in this case, like the Spice Girls sang way back, magic happens when the two become one.

Purple lipstick and gloss aren’t colors you see every day, so at first I was a little intimidated. But I found layering Ever So Rich on top of Lavender Whip creates a shiny mauve lip that looks natural and NOT scary at all.

Here’s one layer of Lavender Whip lipstick…

This lipstick by itself is a little too purple for me, yikes!

It becomes much more wearable after I add a layer of Ever So Rich. The gloss tones down the purple lipstick color and infuses it with a hint of pink.

The combo’s gonna be a nice alternative to a nude lip look when I don’t feel like wearing a beige or peach. I can’t wait to wear it with smokey gray eyes.

If you’re heading down to the counter to check out Creme Team and feeling adventurous, I hope you give it a try! 🙂

Obey the kitty

Even though Tabs is on my shizzlist right now I can’t help but marvel at what that cat does in his spare time. He joined this new group and now claims to be part of Chairman Meow’s feline revolution.

The Girls of MAC Creme Team Arrive, Rivalry Ensues

February 5th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

The girls of MAC Creme Team arrived at MAC counters today to sign autographs, give interviews and talk strategy before the big game.

First, the eight members of the Cremesheen lipstick squad sauntered in with plenty of attitude, dressed in black and ready to rumble.

Top row: Lavender Whip, Lickable, Creme in Your Coffee, Hang-Up; bottom row: Creme Cup, Shy Girl, Crosswires, Spice is Nice

Top row: Creme Cup, Creme in Your Coffee, Crosswires, Hang-Up; bottom row: Lavender Whip, Lickable, Shy Girl, Spice is Nice

“Expect a good matchup,” said Cremesheen Lipsticks captain Shy Girl, “but the real winners are the fans. They love our creamy texture and shiny finish. The competition better bring their A game because we’re bringing lip moisturization like it’s never been broughten before!”

Crowd favorite Creme in Your Coffee flashed a reverse peace sign to fans before taking a seat on the counter. “Neutral pink brown lips in the hizz-ouse!”

From top to bottom: Ever So Rich, Fashion Scoop, Creme Anglaise

From left to right: Boy Bait, Petite Indulgence, Partial to Pink, Melt in Your Mouth (for pics and swatches of Looks Like Sin, check out this previous post)

Top row: Boy Bait, Creme Anglaise, Ever So Rich, Fashion Scoop; bottom row: Melt in Your Mouth, Partial Pink, Petite Indulgence

Not to be outdone by the veteran lipstick squad, the gloss girls of Cremesheen Glass stood tall and regal, their creamy colors glowing with rare intensity.

“Yeah,” said Boy Bait, Cremesheen Glass captain, “it’s gonna be a good game. We’re sheer and creamy, but so what? We might not have the pigmentation, but we don’t need it. We have what it takes to shine.”

From left to right: Caramellow, Pink Treat, Sublime Culture, Velvetella

Which team will win the hearts and minds of MAC lovers? Fans are split. Will it be Cremesheen Lipsticks or Cremesheen Glass?

“Sheer’s pretty,” said Karen of Makeup and Beauty Blog, “but a lot of women wanted more pigmentation. The lipsticks have the shine, better coverage and the moisturization I crave.”

Then, pulling a slightly overweight tabby from her purse and pointing at the lipstick between the cat’s teeth she added, “Even my cat prefers the Lipsticks.”

5 MAC Smokey Eye Looks

February 4th, 2009 by Karen 31 Comments

Smokey eyes can take a timid makeup look to the next level and help bring out your Queen of Sheba.

It seems like they’re never out of style. Maybe that’s because they’re easy to do, unmistakable from afar and don’t require lots of products to create.

The following 5 smokey eye looks feature MAC Cosmetics, but each look can also be done by substituting similar products from other lines.

1. MAC Smokey Eye Tutorial: Halloween Flashback

“Hey, ladies! On Halloween some of you asked for a tutorial describing the MAC Smokey Eyes look I wore to dinner. I was in the mood for MAC today, so I thought I’d give it a try. It’s heavy on MAC products, but you could definitely use similar products from other brands.”

2. MAC Red She Said Face of the Day: Navy Blue, Bronze and Brown Smokey Eye

“I tried this brown, bronze and navy blue smokey eye. When I was done with the look, I walked around the room by myself, pretending I was contemplating impressionist paintings in a fancy art gallery.”

3. A Smokey Eye Tutorial with MAC Cosmetics Metal Urge Gilded Ash Cream Shadow and Cocomotion Pigment

“I don’t know if I’ll ever tire of doing smokey eyes. There are just so many different ways to work the look, like this spin on a daytime eye for work. It’s a method I learned from my favorite MAC artist, Jen, using products from the MAC Metal Urge and Red She Said collections.”

4. MAC Cosmetics Mulch Eyeshadow Face of the Day

mac-cosmetics-mulch-fotd

“I started this face of the day with one pan — ONE PAN! — of MAC Mulch Eyeshadow. From there, it quickly spiraled out of control into a look with seven different shades. I don’t know what’s going on with me, but I think it has something to do with an upcoming deadline. The more pressed for time I get, the more makeup I want to wear! I know I can’t be the only one who loves to procrastinate this way.”

5. 18 MAC to School Makeup Tips

“In Saturday’s class, I chose to do the club look, thinking I’d leave with some crazy, colorful eye like in the above chart. Instead, we ended up doing more of a smokey blue eye with light cheeks and bold pink lips.”

Can you share any tips or tricks to help others with their smokey eyes?

MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer SPF 15 Foundation First Impressions

January 29th, 2009 by Karen 29 Comments

Let MAC Sculpt you up and down ’till you say stop! Sculpt me baby… awwwwww yeah! LOL, I was totally singing my MAC Sculpt version of Silk’s Freak Me when I opened up a few preview items from the MAC Well Defined collection this afternoon.

I’ve been really curious about Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation and Studio Sculpt Concealer but have only been able to try them in NW35 (Studio Sculpt) and NC45 (Sculpt Concealer), two colors which, alas, don’t match my skin tone (I’m an NC35).

Studio Sculpt Foundation: sheer-to-medium coverage, semi-matte finish

Despite the shade I tried not being the right one for me, Studio Sculpt Foundation seems to perform more like a tinted moisturizer than a full coverage foundation. The sheer-to-medium liquid spreads easily over my skin, evening out the color and covering my blotchy patches. All told, the coverage seems lighter and not as thorough as Studio Fix liquid foundation.

Points go to Studio Sculpt for its sheerness and finish. It’s dewy, not necessarily shimmery, but you know how some foundation looks kinda wet when you first apply it? — well, when Studio Sculpt Foundation dries it still has that same look. It’s sort of like a semi-matte finish.

MAC Creme Team Previews

January 29th, 2009 by Karen 42 Comments

Move over mattes, and make way for MAC Creme Team!

Last year’s Matte 2 and Mattene collections were fun throwbacks to the 90s, but for now MAC’s sweet on creams.

The Cremesheen Glasses in the new MAC Creme Team collection fit nicely with the Cremesheen lipsticks released a few months ago.

I previewed three colors from the upcoming Creme Team collection, and all I have to say is halleluyar! I’m in love with the Cremesheen Glasses.

Creamsheen Glasses feel thinner, slicker than Lipglasses

I’ve never felt the Lipglasses were overly sticky, but some women do. For whatever it’s worth, the new glosses — both Petite Indulgence (sheer hot pink) and Looks Like Sin (sheer berry) — feel noticeably slicker, thinner and less sticky to me than the Lipglasses.

The texture reminds me of high quality E.V.O.O. (shout out to Rachel Ray!) — you know, the way good olive oil feels on your lips. That’s how it feels.

Pigmentation and durability

Although I prefer the way the Cremesheen Glasses feel, the Lipglasses win in the pigmentation department.

I think the Cremesheen Glass colors look brighter in the tube than they look on my lips, but when it comes to durability, the Cremesheens begin to fade after just a couple hours, while the Lipglasses seem to last about twice as long. That’s no big whoop to me, though, because I don’t trip over having to reapply often throughout the day.

To their credit, when the color of Cremesheen’s wears down, it actually looks really pretty, like a transparent, semi-shiny wash of color.

Final thoughts

Right now, I think the closest products MAC has to the Cremesheen Glasses are their Lipgelee glosses. They feel similar and have the same faint vanilla scent but are just slightly thicker and aren’t flavored at all. The Cremsheen Glasses also last longer and have a little more pigmentation. MAC Cosmetics Well Defined: New Studio Sculpt Foundation, Concealer Hits Stores Next Week

January 28th, 2009 by Karen 28 Comments

Heya, MAC-aholics! My friends over at MAC just sent me some tidbits on the new Well Defined collection.

It features a new line of gel-based concealers and foundations called Studio Sculpt, which will be added to MAC’s permanent product arsenal.

I haven’t had the greatest luck with MAC foundations in the past (Studio Fix broke me out like *WHOA*), but I love their concealers. My dark circles and I will be all over that lil’ pot with a quickness. 😉

Studio Sculpt Concealer, $16.50

  • NC 15, NC 20, NC 30, NC 35, NC 42, NC 45, NC 50, NW 15, NW 20, NW 25, NW 30, NW 35, NW 40, NW 45, NW 50

Inspired by the needs of M·A·C makeup artists, who demanded a full-coverage concealer that never becomes dry and cakey, the gel-based cream formula slips onto skin, effortlessly hiding imperfections. Its silicone coated pigments help retain color purity for superb coverage that blends easily yet covers completely with just a small amount of product.

Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation, $28

  • NC 15, NC 20, NC 25, NC 30, NC 35, NC 37, NC 40, NC 42, NC 44, NC 45, NC 50, NC 55, NW 15, NW 20, NW 25, NW 30, NW 35, NW 40, NW 43, NW 45, NW 47, NW 50, NW 55

Every drop contains uniquely formulated micronized silicone-coated pigments that keep color true, so it appears to sink into the skin without ever becoming mask-like or cakey. A cushiony gel base helps color slip onto skin for a medium-coverage silky finish.

Made for all skin types, this lush formulation is especially suited for dry, sensitive and mature complexions; with continued use, skin becomes increasingly hydrated and supple.

191 Foundation Brush, $32

  • A large, flat, square-shaped synthetic fiber brush with a fine, firm edge for distribution and blending of liquid, emulsion or cream products on the face or body.

Concealer Brush, $22

  • A flexible, synthetic flat brush with slight pointed tip for application and blending of all concealer formulas and other emollient products.

Prep + Prime Skin, $23

  • An ultra-fluid lotion formulated with special-effect silicones that calms and soothes the skin, blots away excess oil and evens out skin redness. Improves the laydown and application of foundation or powder.

M·A·C STUDIO SCULPT FOUNDATION SPF 15 Q&A WITH GORDON ESPINET, VICE PRESIDENT GLOBAL MAKEUP ARTISTRY, M·A·C WORLDWIDE

Q: How does this formula perform differently from other foundations in the M·A·C line?
Studio Sculpt is incredibly versatile, which makes it unique for many reasons, since its texture is silky and creamy, gliding effortlessly onto skin while providing a natural, velvety finish that’s both modern and natural. It can be blended with moisturizer for a more sheer finish that’s never streaky, or combined with concealer for more full coverage. Create a matte finish by applying powder afterwards, or use Studio Sculpt alone to emphasize skin’s natural sheen and highlights.

Q: Why was this product key for you and your team during fashion week? Has Studio Sculpt been used in any photo shoots?
We have anxiously wanted to offer a foundation that leaves skin looking well-hydrated and completely nourished, and can stand up to being used in various ways. Studio Sculpt can be sheered out or used with powder; it always looks flawless, which is a backstage dream. It is the perfect formula for both film and digital photography, in black and white or color. It’s extremely user-friendly, and the finish remains true and consistent in both color and texture.

Q: Is Studio Sculpt appropriate for HD TV use?
It’s absolutely perfect for High Definition television, because the texture is flawless and it helps skin read as real looking, not overly made up. More importantly, Studio Sculpt’s coverage can be easily manipulated into something very sheer, or layered to offer more coverage where necessary, while remaining even-toned and consistent in texture.

Q: What are some application techniques for the non-professional user?
Begin with a pea size amount on the back of your hand, and use any foundation brush to apply onto hydrated skin. Mix in a bit of your favorite moisturizer (try Strobe Cream or Strobe Liquid), which will create a sheer, luminous finish that makes skin appear to be candlelit. Use any M.A.C concealer over areas that need additional coverage.

Going Peach and Purple with MAC Brunette Blonde Redhead

January 12th, 2009 by Karen 49 Comments

I know I look totally spaced out in the picture above, but I’m having one of those days. I feel like every picture I take ends up looking unintentionally comical.

I guess all I can do is smile and keep on trucking, right? Anyhooty, the look above features a few products from last week’s MAC Brunette Blonde Redhead release. I’m adding this peach-brown-purple combo to my “neutral looks for school” file. 🙂

Eyes

The look starts with the mighty MAC Nice Vice Paint Pot (1), a shimmery purple, patted onto the lid and into the crease with a MAC 249 Large Shader Brush. If the 249 leaves any harsh lines, I smooth them away with a finger.

You may recall Nice Vice from last year’s MAC Fafi collection. It was limited edition, but I really think Artifact Paint Pot, a shimmery burgundy from MAC’s permanent collection, would work just as well.

Next, I apply peachy pink MAC French Cuff eyeshadow (2) over the whole eyelid with a MAC 252 Large Shader Brush and sweep MAC Folie eyeshadow (3), a reddish brown plum, into the outer third of the crease with a MAC 217 Blending Brush.

I want this to look a little smokey, so I pat something dark like the matte chocolate brown MAC Handwritten eyeshadow (4) into the outer corner of the eye using a MAC 239 Eye Shading Brush.

Then, I line the upper lash line with MAC Fluidline in Graphic Brown (5), a shimmery brown, using Laura Mericer’s Flat Eye Liner brush.

I was all aboard the insomnia train last night! — which means I have all-star deluxe super fantastic dark circles right now! When my dark circles are bad I won’t use a dark liner or shadow on the lower lash line.

Instead, I’ll line my lower waterline instead with something like MAC’s Eye Kohl in Powersurge (6), a shimmery bronze-gold. It makes the lower lash line more prominent without making my dark circles take center stage.

To finish the eyes, I curl my lashes with the Shu Uemura lash curler, add two coats of Chanel Exceptionnel mascara and fill in my brows.
