When Lining Eyes with Gels or Powder Eyeshadow

March 8th, 2009 by Karen 11 Comments

For years I happily lined my eyes with pencil liners. Then, I read about fluid liners on Specktra.net, and it opened a world of possibilities!

Here are a couple brushes I use to apply different types of eyeliner (click for the video).

MAC Amber Lights Eyeshadow Face of the Day: Version 1

March 7th, 2009 by Karen 35 Comments

mac cosmetics amber lights eyeshadow fotd

Ladies, thanks to your recommendations I’m now officially obsessed with MAC Amber Lights eyeshadow, aka the ultimate pan of peachy bronze goodness. 🙂

Yesterday, I borrowed a few of your color combination suggestions for this plummy bronze eye.

I know spring is right around the corner and all, but the colors remind me of autumn leaves.

mac cosmetics amber lights eyeshadow fotd eye map

I used six MAC products for the look.

  1. MAC Indianwood Paint Pot cream shadow: shimmery bronze
  2. MAC Amber Lights eyeshadow: shimmery peachy brown
  3. MAC Saddle eyeshadow: matte orangey brown
  4. MAC Star Violet eyeshadow: shimmery plummy brown
  5. MAC Shadowy Lady eyeshadow: matte plummy black
  6. MAC Honey Lust eyeshadow: shimmery bronzy peach

It starts out with a thin layer of Indianwood Paint Pot patted over the entire lid. It’s a cream base that adds staying power to the powder eyeshadows and turns up the color intensity.

After Indianwood, I go straight for Amber Lights, aka my new eyeshadow crush, applying it on the lid with a MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush.

For added color and contrast in the crease, I follow Amber Lights with a sweeping of Saddle eyeshadow on the inner half of the crease using a MAC 217 Blending Brush. After that, I sweep Star Violet eyeshadow on the outer half with a MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush.

I’m shooting for a little more of a smokey look, so I grab my trusty pan of MAC Shadowy Lady eyeshadow (remember her from the MAC Cult of Cherry Collection?) and pat her in the outer corner with the MAC 239.

After lining both the upper and lower lash lines with a MAC 209 Eyeliner Brush, I sweep some Honey Lust eyeshadow onto the brow bone and into the inner corner of the eye with a MAC 217 Blending Brush.

A few coats of mascara and concealer under the eyes, and then I move on to the lips and cheeks…

For the rest of the look, I decided to go with a strong lip and nearly-nude cheeks. I apply a single of layer of MAC O lipstick (a plummy red) on the lips and MAC Emote blush on the cheeks.

I think I’ll wear this look with my plum dress (or maybe a white top and chunky gold jewelry) out to dinner tonight…

35 MAC Makeup Tips for Brushes, Lashes and Brows

March 7th, 2009 by Karen 11 Comments

Makeup brushes, lashes and brows

Good morning, ladies! I hope you had a restful night. El Hub fell asleep early, so I kept myself busy with makeup, TV (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants for the zillionth time) and an article about drug reform in The Economist.

This morning I thought I’d do a list post with some of my favorite makeup tips for brushes, lashes and brows.

Have a good day today. Do something fun! 🙂

Get the most from your makeup brushes

MAC makeup brushes

  1. Firmer fibers tend to deliver a faster application than softer fibers.
  2. Softer fibers tend to offer greater control of color application.
  3. For a luxurious experience, try applying skincare with brushes.
  4. The MAC 190 brush works well for applying masks and moisturizers.
  5. The MAC 194 brush works well with eye cream.
  6. The MAC 180 brush works well to lather shave cream on the face or body.
  7. When dipping brushes into pressed powder products, like eye shadows, do not “mash” the brush into the pan. It breaks the fibers. It’s better for the brush (and more effective) to either swipe from side to side or run the brush around in a circle to gather powder.
  8. Try using two brushes for some of those tricky applications like smoky eyes. Use one brush to pick up and apply the color and the other brush to blend.
  9. When applying makeup, try holding the brush further away from the hair bundle, almost like holding chopsticks. This allows for greater control in application — not to mention, with the hands out of the way, greater visibility!
  10. Brushes for personal use should be cleaned about once a week. For emollient-based product, use cleanse-off oil to emulsify and then brush cleanser to clean and condition.
  11. If after makeup application you find it necessary to throw your brushes into a bag before cleaning, be sure to store the brushes used for liquid or cream products separately from the ones used for powder products (to avoid the cream dirtying the other brushes). If using the same bag for both, try wrapping the brushes for cream products in plastic wrap or a tissue before tossing them into the bag.

Love those lashes

makeup lashes

  1. When curling the lashes, squeeze twice: once closer to the lid and the next a little further toward the tip. It will deliver a longer lasting, more natural curl.
  2. To thicken the lashes, apply two coats of Prep + Prime Lash. Let dry between coats for maximum effect.
  3. For maximum deposit of mascara, “wiggle” the brush from root to tip during the application or apply from side to side rather than up and out.
  4. To open and “lift” the eye, apply mascara to the top lashes only.
  5. For a light coating of mascara, transfer some mascara to a MAC 204 brush and apply.
  6. To help make the eye appear rounder, focus mascara application in the center of both the top and bottom lashes.
  7. To elongate the eye, focus mascara application in the outer corners. Be sure to get the little lashes that tend to hide way out near the edge.
  8. To separate the lashes and assist in achieving a soft, feathery appearance, brush through the lashes with the MAC 206 brush while it’s still wet with mascara.
  9. For the appearance of thicker, richer lashes try a technique called “backing the lashes.” Line the eye from under the top lashes with a MAC 212 brush or a MAC 266 brush dipped in Fluidline.
  10. Experiment with layering formulas to achieve a desired effect. Try Fiber Rich Lash over Zoom Lash for thick, rich lashes without the “spider” effect.
  11. For quick eye lining, run the tips of a MAC 266 brush along the mascara wand and apply when needed.
  12. Try adding color on your lashes. Navy blue mascara is great for brightening the eye without looking like major color; violet mascara adds interest and enhances the appearance of green eyes.

Get bangin’ brows

beautiful eyebrows

  1. When tweezing your eyebrows, it helps to map out the hairs you plan to tweeze by covering them with a light application of concealer or light colored pencil first.
  2. For a more natural looking tinted brow, try focusing the application in the arch rather than the inner portion near the nose. A well-balanced eyebrow tends to be more dense in the arch.
  3. Don’t underestimate the effect of brushing the brows. First brush against the hair growth to separate, then up and back towards the ear to shape.
  4. For the bleached eyebrows look, use Brow Set in a shade one or two shades lighter than your brows. First, brush the wand against the grain of hair growth to cover the brow, and then dip the wand back into the tube and brush going with the grain.
  5. If using both a brow pencil and a brow set, try using a darker pencil and lighter brow set for more dimension.
  6. Fluidline in an appropriate shade, like Dipdown with the MAC 208 brush, is a great way to cover any scars or open areas in the eyebrow.
  7. A light powder eye shadow color like Shroom, Ricepaper or Arena placed under the arch of the brow is a great way to highlight and define.
  8. After applying a powder or pencil color to brows, brush through with the MAC 206 brush to soften. Set with an application of clear or tinted Brow Set.
  9. Clean up any stray brush or pencil strokes with a little concealer and a MAC 194 brush. This helps to sharpen the edges.
  10. In a pinch, Brow Set can be used to touch up the roots of the scalp as well.
  11. Guys can use Brow Set in their sideburns to make them look thicker.
  12. Mix Clear Brow Set with any desired shade of MAC Pigment for a streak of color in the hair.

MAC Amber Lights Eyeshadow: Any Ideas for Color Combos?

March 5th, 2009 by Karen 99 Comments

mac cosmetics amber lights

Have you met MAC Amber Lights ($14.50)? She’s a shimmery peach and bronze eyeshadow from MAC’s permanent collection.

mac cosmetics amber lights swatch

Isn’t she lovely? 🙂

Rose, one of the MAC makeup artists at my nearby MAC counter, suggested I pair her with a reddish brown eyeshadow like Folie or Handwritten in the crease and a black shade like Carbon on the outer lid.

Amber Lights has been around for a few years and has always had a lot of potential.

QUESTION: What colors should I pair with Amber Lights? Let’s brainstorm ideas in the comments.

Karen

MAC Hello Kitty Kouture: Swarovski, Anyone?

March 4th, 2009 by Karen 41 Comments

mac hello kitty kouture sheer mystery powder

Heya, ladies!

I had a lot of homework today, which is why I haven’t posted more. My Joaquin Phoenix mock obituary took longer than expected. I had Joaquin meet his end in a pyrotechnics accident on his debut rap tour. 🙂 We’ll see what my teacher thinks about that…

After school I figured I’d reward myself with a quick trip to the MAC counter.

I left with a pan of Amber Lights eyeshadow (thanks for the recommendation, Dao!) and a few swatches and pictures of the new MAC Hello Kitty Kouture.

An extension of last month’s MAC Hello Kitty Collection, Kitty Kouture’s powders and lipglosses bring on the bling.

The five-piece collection includes three shades of Sheer Mystery Powders ($90, holy WOW!) and two shades of Dazzleglass lipglosses ($28). Each comes dressed to the nines in Swarovski crystals.

No doubt, this bling looks hot!

Aren’t the HK charms too cute? You can even detach them from the tube and use them on a keychain.

Sheer Mystery Powder in Dark Secret

Kitty Kouture goes on sale tomorrow. A MAC makeup artist told me that the hottest item on pre-order has been the Sheer Mystery Powder in Dark Secret (darkest of the three shades).

I love the packaging, but $90 is just a little lot too much to pay for it — think of all the eyeshadows we could get with that!

The Dazzleglass lipglasses are more reasonably priced. I liked Dazzlepuss, the bright pink shade.

MAC Hello Kitty Makeup Tutorial: Spring has Sprung!

March 2nd, 2009 by Karen 83 Comments

MAC cosmetics delft paint pot hello kitty tutorial 18

Gah, spring needs to hurry up and get here already! I know we need the rain, but the gloomy weather weighs on my soul.

I tried to change my outlook yesterday with flowers, looking online for spring bouquets. I thought about this freesia and rose bouquet by Martha Stuart but chickened out at the last second.

Instead, I reached for similar colors — peach, green and pink — and tried to use them in a spring-inspired makeup look.

MAC Hello Kitty MAC Makeup MAC Cosmetics makeup blog beauty blog

I used a few MAC Hello Kitty products for the lips and cheeks and some MAC Metal Urge Pigments on the eyes.

I figure if we can’t change the weather, at least we can change our makeup. 🙂

How to get the eyes

MAC Hello Kitty MAC Makeup MAC Cosmetics makeup blog beauty blog

I start the party by patting a thin layer of MAC Paint Pot in Delft (a shimmery greenish gold) on the lid and just into the crease with a MAC 249 Large Shader Brush, trying to transition the color intensity from where it’s most intense on the lid, to where it’s least intense as it moves into the crease.

Time to go green! I grab my MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush and layer MAC Pigment in Spiritualize (a shimmery yellowish green with silver and gold flecks) directly on top of Delft.

Just like with Delft, I try to concentrate most of the color on the lid.

Next, I want to add a color to accentuate the green and further define the crease, so I grab my trusty MAC 217 Blending Brush and sweep MAC Pigment in Cocomotion (a shimmery gold with olive undertones) into the crease.

MAC Hello Kitty MAC Makeup MAC Cosmetics makeup blog beauty blog

Here, I’m doing my best to blend Spiritualize seamlessly into Cocomotion…

Then, I add a subtle pink shade on my brow bone to accentuate the gold in my crease, patting on MAC Expensive Pink eyeshadow (a shimmery pinkish gold) with the MAC 217.

Again, I try my best to get the colors of Cocomotion and Expensive Pink to blend together smoothly.

Next, it’s time to define the eyes, and I do that by lining the upper and lower lash lines with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Underground (a shimmery brown).
