Wow, You Can Also Use a BeautyBlender to Apply Eyeshadows and Face Powders? Who Knew?

July 7th, 2015 by Karen 22 Comments

beauty-blender-demonstration

While makeup shopping at Nordstrom the other day I happened upon a beautyblender training class for the makeup artists on the floor and, um…of course you know I had to sneak my way into the group. 🙂 I even asked a whole bunch of obnoxious questions (yes, I was *that* student back in the day).

Like, did you know that you can apply eyeshadow with a beautyblender?

Yeah! Who knew, right?

mini-beautyblenderUsing a wet beautyblender Micro Mini (the smallest-sized sponge; a pack of two sells for $18), swirl the larger rounded bottom end of the beautyblender into your powder eyeshadow pan to mix the powder up into something of a temporary cream shadow and to load the sponge. (Applying shadows wet like this will also intensify the colors.) Then, tap that directly on your lids to apply.

Now do the same thing with the smaller pointed end of the beautyblender to apply color in your outer V.

It’s a great way to do simple, single-eyeshadow looks without any fallout so you can get out the door quickly.

Kind of cool, right?

This works with face powder, too! But instead of the mini beautyblender, take a damp regular-sized one, swirl the rounded base into your favorite pressed powder pan, and then tap that on your face wherever you want powder. It’ll apply evenly, without any fallout, and give you full coverage.

Get Better, More Natural-Looking Under-Eye Coverage With These Quick Concealer Tips

July 2nd, 2015 by Karen 16 Comments

trish mcevoy instant eye lift
Trish McEvoy Instant Eye Lift in Shade 2 ($38)

I’m pretty happy with my current under-eye concealer routine of moisturizing first with an eye cream, then usually using a blend of NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer and another concealer like Maybelline Fit Me Concealer or YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch, and then setting with powder, but I’m always looking for ways to improve it, i.e. “make my under-eye sitch look more natural.”

At Nordstrom the other day, I got to chatting with a 10th-level makeup magician/Trish McEvoy makeup artist/sorceress about this seemingly never-ending makeup quest, and she had some great ideas that I actually tried right there in the store, and they worked! Now I’m starting to incorporate them into my regular routine.

Things like…

Look for emollient (smoothing) formulas

“Moisturizing” in a concealer’s description is usually a good sign. Specifically, look for concealers with smoothing or hydrating ingredients like sodium hyaluronate (or hyaluronic acid), because plump, moisturized skin has a smoother, more skin-like appearance that looks more natural…and less like a glob of concealer right under your eyes — something like Trish McEvoy’s Instant Eye Lift, which is $38 and available in two shades.

Grab a flat concealer brush

If you’re interested in getting the fullest of full coverages (which I totally am), try patting your concealer on and around your dark circles using a flat concealer brush, instead of swiping with something else like a different brush, a sponge or your fingers, to keep more of the product where you want it (as opposed to swiping it away).

1-Minute Makeup Morsel: If Hot Weather Is Melting Your Concealer Mojo, Add NARS Pro Prime to Your Under-Eye Routine

July 1st, 2015 by Karen 13 Comments

nars pro prime

I’ve been adding NARS Pro Prime to my under-eye routine before I apply concealer (I also whack it into my brows before brow products), in addition to using it to prime my lids, because it’s been so. Damn. Hot.

Plus, we don’t have AC in our condo, so sometimes when it’s REALLY hot, and I’m literally dripping in sweat, my makeup melts off my face.

So I tried it one day — Pro Prime under my concealer — and it made a big difference. My concealer definitely lasts longer with NARS Pro Prime’s help.

So just an FYI. Give it a try sometime if it’s hella hot where you are. 🙂

Karen

P.S. It’s actually been a bit cooler here this week. Today we only hit 82! Huzzah!

Your Hair Has a New Secret Weapon, and It’s a Tool for Teeth

June 24th, 2015 by Karen 11 Comments

toothbrush as hair tool final

Why walk around with a misbehaving mop when your favorite dental dynamo can help? Yaaaas, girl! Toothbrushes aren’t just for cleaning teeth (or gunky lash combs) anymore. They’re also great for taming unruly stray hairs.

Here’s what you do…

  1. Grab a spare toothbrush — the stiffer the bristles, the better. Ideally, you’d want to dedicate a spare NEW one, but if you have an old one sitting around, and it doesn’t gross you out to repurpose it, go for it.
  2. Spray the bristles with your favorite firm-hold hairspray, and don’t be afraid to douse that ish!
  3. Now, gently comb the wet toothbrush through any rebellious stray hairs — much like you’d use a hair brush — to get them to obey orders and fall into place.

How to Keep Your Makeup Looking Fresh in Hot Weather

June 17th, 2015 by Karen 35 Comments

how to keep your makeup fresh in hot weather
Sweating like Keith on the banks of the Mississippi…

There was a moment last week on Magazine Street in New Orleans when El Hub and I were sitting at a booth in a cafe while sipping iced strawberry lemonades to cool down when I officially realized just how unfathomably hot and muggy summertime New Orleans is/was. I was leaning back in the booth and spacing out, just staring blankly at a ceiling fan and the artwork on the walls when I leaned forward, and I felt the back of my sticky, sweat-soaked dress literally peel away from the vinyl.

Yup, ’twas pretty gross.

I think I sweated through that entire trip, but I also got some extra sweaty hands-on experience getting my makeup to stay put in hot, humid weather.

Gotta love silver linings. 🙂

I could’ve just gone barefaced and not worn anything, but where’s the fun in that?

Things to help your warpaint last through hot and/or humid weather…

  • Primer
  • Powder
  • Setting spray
  • Blotting papers (which we’ll talk about in a minute)

For me, these are all hot-weather non-negotiables.

In cooler climates, when it comes to makeup improv and leaving things out of my routine, I usually have a more go-with-the-flow attitude, but when faced with extreme heat and humidity, I think it really helps to use these products if you don’t want your makeup to slide off your face.

Primer

make up for ever primer
Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer and NARS Pro Prime Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base

Starting with primer, I used two last week (the Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer and NARS Pro Prime Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base pictured above), one for my face makeup and one for my eyes.

Really, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of different kinds of primers out there, but I look for ones that do these two things to really help my makeup last longer: 1) smooth out the surface of my skin, and 2) latch onto whatever I happen to layer on top of them, be it BB cream, foundation, concealer, powder, what have you.

To apply a face primer, I blot my skin first with a tissue to remove any excess oil or moisture. Then I massage the primer on my oiliest spots — my cheeks, nose, chin and forehead.

After that, I do the same thing with eye primer, blotting first, then applying it to my lids, into my brows (to help my brow products last longer), and under my eyes (to keep my concealer in place).

I give them about five minutes to absorb, then blot one more time with a tissue before applying my foundation, concealer, etc., on top.

How to Fix Your Flicks

June 4th, 2015 by Karen 17 Comments

how to fix your cat eye flicks

Just imagine… What if every day was Caturday, and your cat eye flicks were always perfect?

Wouldn’t that be grand? 🙂

Some days it does work out that way. I’ll flick my wrist and tada! — a perfect cat eye flick.

Admittedly, those days are rare… Most of the time, the edges of my flicks start out blurry and muddy.

When this happens, don’t panic! It’s easy to fix.

Just grab your current concealer love, put a little on the back of your hand, and pick some up with a small, flat concealer brush. (Side note: if you don’t have a flat concealer brush available, an angled or pointed eye brush works, too.)

how to fix your cat eye flicks

Next, run the edge of the brush along the bottom of your flick to sharpen the line.

You can stop there if you want, or keep going. At this point I’ll usually soften the concealer a little by gently running a pointed cotton bud along the edge. It helps to ever-so-slightly soften the edge and prevent an overly sharp, harsh line (that looks like I obviously applied concealer along the edge of my flick).

If you don’t have a pointed cotton bud on hand, you can also load a flat eyeshadow brush with face powder, and then gently run the tip of the brush along the edge of your flick. It’s another way to soften the appearance of the concealer.

Here’s how my flicks usually look before doing this trick — kinda muddy and undefined…

How to Get the Gunk Out of Your Lash Comb

June 4th, 2015 by Karen 25 Comments

toothbrush

And by “gunk,” I mean all of that nasty stuff that builds up between the teeth of your lash comb — the mascara, eye liner, eyeshadow, cat hair (don’t judge)…

I used to clean my lash comb with makeup wipes. I’d run them up and down the teeth of the comb to whisk away any gunky leftover makeup, and it worked well enough, I guess…because it got out most of the gunk, but I’d still see bits and bobs way down in there between the teeth.

I don’t do that anymore, though, because I’ve found a better solution.

A toothbrush!

It hit me (the idea, not the toothbrush) after this post about kitchen tools. I was wondering how the heck I was going to clean the tiny little teeth on my new julienne tool, and Sandra, one of the gals who comments on MBB (hi, Sandra!), mentioned that toothbrushes are great for getting in between tiny spaces.

Hmm…

If they’re good enough to clean julienne tools, why not lash combs?

The Fab 5, Vol. 7: Best Brow Products [VIDEO]

April 16th, 2015 by Karen 13 Comments

I say WOWZA when it comes to brows!

On second thought, maybe I say BROW-ZA. Wowza to brow-za…

Yeah, I don’t know what I’m saying. 🙂 What I’m trying to say, though, apparently very non-eloquently, is that I freaking love eyebrows.

Perhaps a little too much. I love how the smallest tweak to your brows can switch up your entire makeup look, boom — just like that.

No, seriously, we could talk about brows from now till tomorrow morning.

Thankfully, however, this video is not an eight-hour-long monologue of me waxing philosophic about brows (although if you wanted that…). It’s an ode to five brow products I absolutely adore, so kick back, relax, and give your brows a moment to enjoy this episode of The Fab 5: Best Brow Products.

Products mentioned

  1. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Dark Brown/Brunette, $21
  2. Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel, $22
  3. Bobbi Brown Natural Brow Shaper & Hair Touch-Up, $24
  4. MAC Eye Shadow in Brun, $16
  5. MAC Chromagraphic Pencils, $16 each

As always, thank you again for watching!

Karen
