MAC Makeup News – Interview with MAC Viva Glam Spokesperson Dita Von Teese, Macy’s Passport American Express Gala Night 2007

MAC Makeup News – Interview with MAC’s Viva Glam Spokesperson Dita Von Teese, Macy’s Passport American Express Gala Night 2007

That’s me with Dita. And yes, she’s RAD.
karen-and-dita

Last night was my interview with Dita Von Teese, MAC makeup diva extraordinaire, and I’m happy to report that I got some great info!

Dita was really beautiful in person and lots of fun to speak with. She totally focuses on you when she speaks to you and there were a few moments when I felt like a deer-in-the headlights, because she’d look so intensely at me and I felt like I couldn’t focus on anything else! It was akin to being two feet away from a *massive sonic boom* of MAC makeup beauty. She has amazing skin; so milky and porcelain and just perfect.

I got to peek in her dressing room before the show and saw her costumes, some show props (a big ole’ strawberry sponge and a bottle of what appeared to be a bottle Cristalle.), some MAC makeup on the counter, but I am sad to report that there was no harem of hot shirtless oiled up men fanning her with peacock feathers. I wish!

And her performance was frickin’ hot! She did the one where she first pops the champagne open, pours it all over her body and then dances around in the life-sized champagne glass.

Here’s the transcript from our interview. Enjoy!

Makeup and Beauty Blog: So what MAC makeup are you wearing today?

Dita Von Teese: Well, let’s see…I hope I can remember! I think my cheek color is called Dame. My lip color is Russian Red with a Lip Lacquer called Fan Plastico over that. And I have liquid liner, MAC false lashes (of course!). I have Vapor eyeshadow, and MAC mineralize powder on.

MBB: Absolutely beautiful!
DVT: Thank you!

MBB: I was lucky enough to pick up your Favorite things! Dubonnet is my new favorite red.
DVT: It’s a great one.
MBB: It’s really good and that Cremestick liner is amazing.
DVT: They have so many great products. I’ve been a long time fan of MAC cosmetics, so it was really exciting for me to be a Viva Glam Spokesperson. It’s a cause I really believe it and I’ve supported since it was launched with RuPaul. So it’s great. I love talking about lipstick, and how much this lipstick has done with people living with HIV and aids. It’s really been great.

MBB: What inspired you to sign on as Viva Glam spokesperson?
DVT: Well, I remember when it was first launched under RuPaul, and I remember being so excited by the idea that a cosmetics company would put RuPaul looking fabulous … and a drag queen in a cosmetics campaign is amazing!

I didn’t know what I could do to really help people with HIV and AIDS. I didn’t have a lot of money and I was thinking, “What can I really do to help?” and so I could certainly afford to buy a lipstick. And it felt really good know that 100% of the selling price wsa actually going to help people living with HIV and AIDS. And now they’re reaching the 100 million dollar mark, and so it’s really incredible. It just makes me happy to be able to have a voice about this campaign and I’m so proud of what they’ve done.

MBB: What is your most stand-out moment so far as Viva Glam spokesperson?
DVT: A few things. I’m really not much of a public speaker. It makes me really nervous and I’ve had to conquer my fear of that by giving speeches, speaking in front of colleges, and presentations all around the world.

Also it’s been really exciting because MAC cosmetics let me create a burlesque show to bring more attention to Viva Glam. I ride a giant, nine-foot long mechanical lipstick. And it’s really great that they let me have that opportunity to bring my own personal touches to the campaign.

MBB: Whose idea was it to have the mechanical lipstick?
DVT: (laughs) It was mine! Well, I had a few different ideas. I work with my best friend, who makes all of my costumes. We were working together, and we were coming up with different ideas for a show. There were three ideas: one was safe, one was in the middle, and one was outrageous. And of course riding the lipstick was outrageous — obviously the most expensive, the most risqué, but the most fun, and MAC is a really adventurous company and so they let me go along with it and it was really exciting to make it happen.

MBB: That’s so cool that you work with your best friend! How long have you guys been friends?
DVT: I guess about 10 or 11 years.

MBB: What is her name?
DVT: Her name is Catherine D’Lish. She also a burlesque performer. We met because it was sort of a rivalry in a way. We had the same manager and we were both doing classic burlesque, and there weren’t many people performing burlesque at that time. And certainly not in the circuit that we were in.

So a lot of people said that we had to meet. We were really meant to be either the greatest rivals or greatest friends. Fortunately we banded together, and it’s been really exciting to make these shows bigger and better and more opulent and extravagant.

She’s there to push me and make it happen. The costumes she makes are extraordinary. The one I’m wearing tonight weighs about 70 pounds and it’s covered in about 250,000 Swarovski crystals so we’re always trying to raise the bar.

MBB: That’s so fantantic. It’s really great that you have someone to push you and inspire you.
DVT: It’s great because she actually puts the costumes on and knows how it feels whereas a lot of people don’t understand really the suffering involved in wearing 70 pounds worth of costume and being corseted down! And she’s right there with me to feel it and knows how it all works.

MBB: So the other day I was flipping through the channels on TV and I saw an interview with on IFC on sex and the cinema. And the reason why I knew it was you was because I saw your red lips.
DVT: (laughs)
MBB: The public obviously knows you for the red lip, black eyeliner, look. On your days off, what’s your makeup like?
DVT: Well there are varying degrees and I’m rarely seen without my red lip. But I have to say that you’re not going to walk in on my yoga class or my pilates class and I’m not going to be wearing a cat eye and a red lip!

I always have a very retro style, whether it is very little makeup; my clothing doesn’t change, I don’t put on a pair of jeans and t-shirt and a beige lip on my off days. This is something that I truly love and I believe in and it makes me feel good. So I make a point to make myself feel good every day.

MBB: Have you always been a red lip kind of girl, or was there a time when you were a teenager or when you were first experimenting with makeup when you wore a different look?
DVT: Not some much when I was a teenager. I would sneak the red lipstick when I was 13, 14! I’ve strayed from the red lip a few times, unfortunately …when I first started out people would say, “Oh, you have to look normal,” and they’d try to “normalize” me for a magazine and I’ve learned since then never to let that happen to me again.

I’m very insistent about my look, and in fact the hair and makeup people that I do use for a magazine is very specific. It’s the same way all the time, I really insist on it. But I do my own hair and makeup for events and a lot of photo shoots and I pride myself in my self-styling.

MBB: So when you are doing your makeup yourself, what are your favorite tricks and tips?
DVT: My number one tip is you have to practice. A lot of people ask me “How can I do my hair in 40s style or 30s style like you do, and how can I get this look?” And I think that really you have to sit in the mirror and you have to practice. You have to want it really bad. You have to have patience and you have to understand that’s the only way to really achieve it there’s no shortcut. You just really have to practice.

MBB: Do you have a favorite MAC product that you cannot live without?
DVT: Yes! Of course my Russian Red lipstick — I can’t live without. And I really love the MAC Mineralize Powders, they’re so easy to wear, and a quick foundation before you go. It’s light and any woman can wear it and it’s a really wonderful quick fix.

MBB: So, I dance too. I’m not a burlesque dancer, though, I do hip hop. I’m dying to know, because I read that you’re a trained ballerina —
DVT: Not a very good one! Well I danced ballet all my life. I wanted to be a ballerina. I tried and tried and you have to really face it sometimes that you’re not meant to be professional. Or you can work really hard at something and you can definitely learn a lot from it. I have a lifetime of ballet training but I have to say I was never meant to be a great ballerina. A lot of my shoes I perform en pointe, but you know I’m not going out there performing 42 pirouettes.

MBB: Do you have a favorite genre of dance in addition to burlesque?
DVT: I feel like ballet is my favorite. It’s the most beautiful, most challenging dance. And I’m just a big fan of the beauty of ballet, and the fact that it’s so feminine. There isn’t one ugly move in ballet. If you snap a picture anywhere you’re going to have perfect body lines, really feminine, beautiful body shapes so that definitely has to be my favorite.

MBB: Do you have a favorite show?
DVT: Usually my newest show is my favorite. I have a show right now that I’m about to debut. I have a ten-foot tall sparkling black swan fountain and it’s a very sort of funny twist on Swan Lake, so that brings me back to the ballet, but I wanted to do this sort of playful, Swan Lake thing. It’s a little bit funny, as burlesque often is. But I’m really excited about this show, because we’re making really wonderful, original music for it.

Usually my new shows are favorite. A lot of people know me for doing the champagne glass and the martini glass, but I do have 15 other numbers that are more dramatic.

MBB: So what’s next up for Dita?
DVT: Well, I’m writing a beauty book for eccentrics, for people who want to look different, for people who want to break the rules of makeup and hair and fashion.

I’m writing a book on how I do it step-by-step. I have a lot of female fans, and their biggest question is “How can I do my hair like this, show me,” so I really wanted to write this book. And also I wanted to write a book that encourages women to be individual and unique. When you look at beauty magazines, beauty advice is so many cut rules. They say, “Don’t wear blue eyeshadow, don’t wear green eyeshadow, don’t wear a heavy eye and a heavy lip,” and I’m hear to say, “You should wear what you want, and it’s okay to break the rules.”

Macy’s Passport 2007 American Express Night

The fashion show itself was one of the most entertaining fashion shows I’ve ever attended. Macy’s passport is a charity event, and all the proceeds of the night go to AIDS organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Proceeds from last night’s show go to Project Open Hand and the National AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. Next time you are in SF please stop by the National AIDS Memorial Grove. It’s very moving.

The show last night featured several high profile designers including Calvin Klein, Levi’s and Marc Ecko. While fashion was the focus, there were also several dance numbers which made the show entertaining. The VIA SPIGA show was amazing. The models/dancers came out and did high energy dances to oldies like “These Boots Were Made for Walking,” and “Proud Mary.” And they did it in four inch stilettos. I nearly fainted from the mix of shoe orgasm and amazing choreography.

Speaking of choreography, the hip hop dance group Epic Threads and Spirit of Uganda were fantastic. Check out the video of both doing battle:

P.S. OMG…the brushes with celebrity just keep on a coming! One of my *favorite* bloggers, Trent from Pink is the New Blog, just linked my Dita interview. Trent’s blog is the BEST of the gossip/celeb blogs out there (I think he’s way cuter than Perez and his writing is sharp and witty without being cruel.) I’ve been reading it for three years and I love his work. Seriously, I might faint!

Q&A with Juice Beauty CEO Karen Behnke

If you haven’t heard of Juice Beauty yet, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time. This up-and-coming beauty company focuses on organic skin and body products, which are good for your skin and good for the planet, yay. The brand is quickly gaining a cult following among the Hollywood elite; Kate Hudson is a fan and gushed over Juice Beauty products recently in Harper’s magazine.

Makeupandbeautyblog.com recently sat down with Juice Beauty’s CEO and “head juicer” Karen Behnke to get the lowdown on her favorite Juice Beauty products and the company’s plans for the future.

Makepandbeautyblog.com: Juice Beauty is on its way to becoming a well-recognized brand in the beauty world. What do you think is the key to your continuing success?

Karen Behnke: I think the key to our continuing success is our products. We’ve just developed unbelievable formulations and I think people are really interested in products that work and are organic…Our goal is to provide the healthiest, most highest efficacy products for women and men. And at the same time we’re helping the planet because we’re support all of our organic farmers and we use recycled packaging.

We use 100% organic juice base, which is very expensive, and it’s jammed with antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, minerals and all of the things that will really feed your face. To that we add over 60 organic ingredients and also high age-defying types of ingredients.

MBB: What’s your favorite product from the line?

KB: Oh! That’s hard for me to say, but I can give you a couple ties!

[One of my favorites] is the cleansing milk. It’s just so luxurious and rich. It takes off all of your makeup and I just love it.

And my favorite treatment product is our Green Apple Peel. It’s what we’re really known for. Our Green Apple Peel has powerful alpha and beta hydroxy acids and it’s an immediate result type of benefit. Immediate!

MBB: What’s so special about it?

KB: It’s a powerful exfoliator, and a peel that you do once a week.

juice-beauty-green-apple-peel-sample

MBB: Any other favorites from the line?

KB: My favorite moisturizer is our Green Apple Antioxidant Moisturizer. It’s rich, rich, and has all of the age defying ingredients. And I have to add my favorite [sunscreen] is the SPF 30 Mineral Light Moisturizer, and that’s what I put all over in the morning. Face, neck, hands, you name it. It’s a chemical-free, organic, full UVA-UVB sun protection, and it’s anti-oxidant rich pomegranate, and we tint it with minerals so it gives light coverage. You just put one moisturizer on in the morning and it provides full coverage, and offers a little bit of light foundation. I’ve never worn foundation in my life, but this makes you really glow.

MBB: Sounds pretty! Do you have one color for all skin tones or multiple shades?

KB: We have three different shades.

MBB: What products do you think are good intro products for people new to the line?

KB: Our best intro products are our kits. We have our Organics To Go kits, which a great sampling of a lot of our products, and for $29.00 you can sample 5 products. Our other great kit is our Organics To Clear Skin, and that’s our blemish regimen. It’s a step-by-step kit [which includes] our Cleansing Gel and Blemish Clearing Serum, one of our best sellers.

MBB: What’s the active ingredient?

KB: It’s gentle salicylic acid/willow bark …It really keeps your skin clear. [And our kit also includes] our Oil-Free Moisturizer and our Sensitive Green Apple Peel. That’s about a three month’s supply and that’s $39.00 for a sampler.

MBB: You guys are growing fast. Where would you like to see Juice Beauty in five years?

KB: Well, we are the organic prestige leader right now in the United States. And we want to certainly maintain that position, but we’re growing quickly internationally, so our goal is to become the worldwide organic prestige leader in skincare. And we’ve just branched into body care.

MBB: Do you have any plans to expand into makeup?

KB: We have some tints in our moisturizers, and we have some lip cover, but other than that we probably won’t go into makeup. We’ll probably just keep going into body and then probably next would be hair.

MBB: What on piece of advice would you give women entrepreneurs who are starting out in the beauty industry?

KB: I would say the most important thing is to follow your passion. And within the beauty aspect of that is to find out where your passion is within beauty and just really follow it. Our passion here is organic and in efficacy, and so we really work hard at trying to find pure organic ingredients that really work.

Interested in checking the products out? Head to your nearest Sephora store or visit their Web site, juicebeauty.com.

Can you believe our weekend is over? I didn’t really do much except work on some writing and watch a few movies, which is just how I wanted it. =) I could probably use at least two more days of relaxation though! Keep up the good fight and remember to look on the bright side – at least it’s a short week, right?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Product Reviews – MAC Smoke Signals and Cargo PlantLove Lipsticks; Dear Makeup and Beauty Blog, the Upper Lip Hair Edition; Weekend Beauty Round-up

August 31st, 2007 by Karen 9 Comments

When I was 14 my mom bought me my first tube of lipstick. I cherished that Clinique tube of silver sophistication, and whenever I put it on I felt like an elegant world traveler was staring back at me in the mirror. My actual reflection, of course, was of an awkward teenager with braces, big, unruly hair and weird clothing (it was hard to be haute couture in the East Bay in the early 90s, and try as I might I could never quite get it right.) But that tube made me feel like I was the person I was meant to be — put-together, sophisticated, beautiful.

There’s something special about a great tube of lipstick. Don’t get me wrong … I loves me some gloss. Gloss is sexy, youthful and fun. But lipstick always reminds me of different steps in my life that led me to become a woman: that first Clinique lipstick, countless tubes of MAC Paramount I wore throughout college, and the first Chanel lipstick I bought when I finally got a “real job” in the city.

And just like Justin brought sexy back, the beauty powers-that-be declared this the year of the return of lipstick. Huzzah, sound the trumpets! If you’re not ready for a full-on dark, pigmented mouth (and I’ll have to admit that I am not quite ready for it either), you don’t have to go all the way. These fall lipsticks from MAC’s Smoke Signals line and Cargo’s PlantLove line have enough gloss to make your Lipglasses jealous, but enough thickness and color punch for an air of sophistication.

Product Review — MAC Smoke Signals Lipsticks — Sparks Can Fly, Barely Lit, Mellow Flame, Burnin’

Smoke Signals madness continues! MAC released five different colors that are very natural and for the most part, user friendly. Yesterday I rocked the Brew, so let’s check out the other four!

mac-smoke-signals-barely-lit
Barely Lit
Price: $14.00 for a tube
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

I am sucker for the MAC’s lustre formulas, because they give just enough color without feeling heavy. I also like that they feel very moisturizing on my lips. Barely Lit is a pink sand with a gold pearl. The color is pretty, natural and really warms up my skin. This picture shows it with two coats applied carefully with the 316 lip brush. However, it also looks great when you are in a hurry (story of my life) and need to apply it straight from the tube. I like this for an easy day look paired with curled lashes and filled in brows. It’s also very pretty for night, too, and for you single ladies (and lads) oh-so-very date friendly. Your crush will not fear giving you a big ole’ fatty of a kiss with this light beauty on your lips!

mac-smoke-signals-mellow-flame
Mellow Flame
Price: $14.00 for a tube
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A+

Mellow flame is another lustre in the Smoke Signals lipstick series, a warm coral pink with red pearl. I love coral colors, and MAC really hit it out of the park with this one based on color alone. Even though the color is brighter in comparison to Barely Lit it is still natural-looking without being overwhelming. It’s warm and wearable, and if you wanted to really make it sexified you could pop a coat of Lipglass over it and woo-hoo-va-va-voom! Call the fire department cause there’s a hottie in the house!

mac-smoke-sparks-can-fly
Sparks Can Fly
Price: $14.00 for a tube
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: D

Um, sparks were so not flying. This creamy rose frost just does not work on me when I use it by itself. There’s something about the coloring that makes my lips look blue-grey, like a lovely zombie bride with frostbite. I’m so not kidding. I think I’ll have to pair it with a warmer Lipglass in order to make it work. Ugh. Don’t do it, ya’ll.

mac-smoke-signals-burning
Burnin’
Price: $14.00 for a tube
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

Talk about a kick back to the past. This dark, wine-colored lipstick takes me back to my formative years in East Bay (which coincidentally, is the word “beast” in pig latin). So when you grow up in the East Bay, you end up having so many types of friends because it’s such a melting pot of races and colors. Burnin’ reminds of my friend Monica from algebra class, who wore tight jeans, thick black liner, and was in a Latina gang. She wore dark, wine-colored lipstick like it was nobody’s business. Even though she was tough and could beat the beejebus out of anyone who crossed her, she was very sweet. We’d go on for hours and hours about the merits of Wet & Wild versus Cover Girl.

So my first reaction when I saw this color was “OHHHHHH. Monica would rock this, but could I?.”

I was surprisingly pleased with Burnin’. This was my first time using MAC’s amplified texture, which is slightly glossy and very color-rich. It’s dramatic yet surprisingly wearable, and I didn’t feel like a vampire when I had it on. The biggest drawback about Burnin’ is that applying the deep color takes time and patience, two things that I don’t always have. I also would not give this color to my 14-year old cousin. The color is too mature and too sexy.

If you’re in the mood for a dramatic change then this is worth a go. While not exactly kissable, it would be fab for a sophisticated night out in a little black dress.

Product Review — Cargo PlantLove Lipsticks — Muir Woods, Joshua Tree, Gamba

cargo-plant-love-all-three

Cargo PlantLove Lipsticks
Price: $20 for a tube
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Cargo’s line of eco-friendly lipsticks called PlantLove recently fell into my hot little hands. One look at the super cute packaging and I was hooked. And would you believe that the tube is made entirely out of corn?!?!

The lipstick comes in an outer carton made out of biodegrable paper with flower seeds embedded in it. You wet the carton, pop it in some dirt, and bam, purty flowers just for you. Satisfy your lipstick lust and your inner botanist in one fell swoop!

All three colors have a similar texture that feels halfway between a lipstick and a gloss. They’re sheer, easy to apply and build up nicely. If you are new to lipstick (or just hella lazy like yours truly) then Gamba is a good gateway product to the big guns, lol. Oh, and if you’re a mom looking for colors for your teenager you’ll like colors like Muir Woods and Joshua Tree, which are natural-looking, not too over the top and perfect for girls who are interested in exploring makeup.

And to top it off Cargo is donating two dollars from every sale of every shade to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, yay.

Lol, don’t you wish

Dear Makeup and Beauty Blog: the Upper Lip Hair Edition

dear-mbb
Friday means it’s time for your weekly dose of tough love from Dear Makeup and Beauty Blog. Got a beauty question but afraid to go there? Never fear. We’re hear to break it down for ya.

Dear Makeup and Beauty Blog,

I’ve got dark upper lip hair. I’m not the bearded lady or anything, but it’s pretty obvious. I am terrified of waxing it off because I’m afraid it will hurt. I’ve been thinking about buying some hair bleach at the drugstore to make it lighter. Do you think this is a good idea?

Cheers,

Hairy in Hartford

Dear Hairy,

Don’t go running off to join the circus to just yet. Many women deal with upper lip issues in different ways, but we don’t always like to talk about our ‘stache hair in casual company (so not sexy). Not to fear. You’ve got many options.

There are so many people who either don’t like to wax or just can’t do it for various reasons. I had a roommate who always broke out in bumps after she got waxed so she eventually developed a method of bleaching first and then using small cuticle scissors to cut off the bleached hairs.

Before I started waxing, I would cut the hairs down as much as I could using curved cuticle tweezers. I’d then go to town on the remaining hairs with some fine-tipped tweezers. For me, tweezing isn’t painful, so I don’t mind. I eventually quit this method just because it takes forever and rarely did I ever get truly hair free.

fussy-tabby-orange-stache

I don’t recommend using the bleach alone ‘cause girrrrrrl…you ain’t fooling nobody. Step away from the bleach unless you just want to look like you’ve got an orange caterpillar growing underneath your mose.

I know you mentioned that you are afraid of waxing — I used to be too – but I find that it is the most cost effective and best method of hair removal. I do my own waxing with an at home kit; it’s cheap, easy and fast.

I used a transition method to help me go from wax newbie to wax pro:

1. I first went to a professional salon and had my ‘stache waxed about 4 times over a 12 week period. Where I live you can get an upper lip wax for 8-10 bucks, so it’s not too expensive. Think of it as a small investment in your hair-free future. If your budget is tight try to get it done at least once or twice. My reasoning behind this was to get me used to the sensation of how it feels to have the hair ripped out. I figured I’d then know what to expect once I started doing it myself.

2. After the four waxing sessions, I bought a wax strip kit at the drugstore called Sally Hansen Hair Remover Wax Strip Kit for Face, Brows & Bikini. It’s about $8.00. I only use this for the upper lip. I’ve tried it for body hair and it just doesn’t work well for coarser, thicker hair. There are small, medium and large strip sizes. You can use the small strips for your upper lip, and when you run out of them you can just cut the medium and large strips down to size. One box lasts me at least 5 months, and I wax every three weeks. It averages out to a little over a $1.00 per wax, saving me lots of time and money.

3. Okay. Now to the hard part! First I warm the wax strips in my hands. Some people recommend giving the strip a quick shot with a blow dryer, but I never do that because I’m afraid of heating up the wax too much and burning myself. I then place the strip on half of my ‘stache, pushing it down in the direction of the hair growth. I then take a deep breath (seriously, this is important), and with one hand, pull my skin in the direction of the hair growth, and then use my other hand to pull the wax strip in the opposite direction. I do this quickly! Right as I pull the wax strip off I exhale. It doesn’t really hurt, but the breathing helps to lesson the shock to my system. Right after I pull the strip off I place a finger on the area and gently apply pressure to reduce any sting.

4. The kit comes with azulene oil, which I then use to remove any remaining wax. Sometimes I use Jojoba oil too, which works just as well.

5. I found out that timing was important during those first few sessions. I would take two painkillers at least an hour before and I would never wax right before my period (which is when I become very sensitive to pain.)

6. Voila! No more bearded lady!

I hope this helps! Good luck. Stay smooth.

Karen

Final Night of San Francisco Fashion Week 2007: Backstage Makeup Tips from 5 MAC Artists; MAC Runway Looks; Runway Pictures and Video from August 25, 2007

August 27th, 2007 by Karen 15 Comments

The Saturday Night Runway Show on August 25, 2007

That sage of song Ru Paul once sang, “You better woooooork.” Saturday, August 25 was the final night of the runway shows for San Francisco Fashion Week 2007, so we here at www.makeupandbeautyblog.com busted our bum for one last final hustle to get you more behind-the-scenes MAC looks … possibly more than your MAC-loving heart can handle!

Before we move onto the looks, lets meet a few more members of the MAC team backstage, yah?

Five MAC Backstage Makeup Artists Reveal their Favorite MAC Products and Give Some Oh-So-Juicy Tips

Makeupandbeautyblog.com has spent lots of time with key makeup artists, Victor Cembellin and Louise Zizzo, who work with designers to create a specific look for their runway show.

How do you get these looks onto all of the models? With the help of a fantastic team of MAC artists, of course!

I got the chance to chat with five MAC artists who played this important role backstage. Not only was their eye makeup super hot, they were also really friendly and fun to talk to, and had a lot to say about their favorite MAC products and makeup tricks.

MAC Artist:
Angela Miller
mac-artists-backstage
Years with MAC:
11
What she’s wearing right now:
Espresso and Carbon — it’s kind of a 90s-style makeup because it’s coming in right now. Oh, and an 80s gold lip.
Must have MAC Product:
Any MAC brush! My favorite brush is the 227. I use it for concealer, for eye shadow base, for under-eye cream, it’s an “everything” brush!
Favorite super-secret makeup tip:
Always make sure you blend out your liner whenever you are using a dramatic look with color. If you’re wearing eye shadow color, use a 212 brush to blend out your line to make it more smoky and smudged right by the lash line.

MAC Artist:
Christine Salopak
mac-artists-backstage2
mac-artists-backstage2a
Years with MAC:
4
Must have MAC Product:
Zoom Lash
What she’s wearing right now:
A little bit of everything! Studio Fix Fluid, Mineralize Satinfinish Powders (a few different shades), Omega in my brows, good old Soft Brown in the crease, Vanilla on my lid, Blacktrack, brown lashes, and a little bit of Pink Swoon Blush on my cheeks.
Favorite super-secret makeup trick:
Use different tools. If you took my brushes away I’d be hopeless. I’m a big brow girl so I love the 266, the 224, and the 109. I love the 109 because it puts foundation on seamlessly. The 109 is a great way to lay it on seamlessly if you want light coverage, or if you want to layer it on for heavy duty coverage. It’s always about skin every season so it doesn’t really matter if it’s winter or if it’s summer. Your skin has to look flawless no matter what type of shape your skin is in.

MAC Artist:
Melissa Ranoa
mac-artists-backstage3
mac-artists-backstage3a
Years with MAC:
5
Must have MAC Product:
I love Face And Body. It feels very light and looks good on everybody. You can apply with fingertips, brushes… a 109 brush is great to use with it. The 109 is my favorite foundation brush because it’s very buffy and I like things to look a little bit softer and natural.
What she’s wearing right now:
Smoke Signals! Smoking in the crease, Showstopper on the Lid, Smoking Liner on the lashline, Falsh Lashes #7, Zoom Lash mascara, and Emote on the cheek. I’m in love with Emote – I need to buy 5! On my lips I’m wearing Brew Lipstick, Amber Ember, which is a Creamstick Liner with a pearl undertone, and Illicit Gloss.
Favorite super-secret makeup trick:
I love using brushes, but now I’m starting to use fingers more to apply makeup, because you can really feel the bone structure.

MAC Artist:
Marinda James
mac-artists-backstage4
mac-artists-backstage4a
Years with MAC:
4
Must have MAC Product:
Lady Danger lipstick, because it’s a true vintage orange-red with a matte texture. I love that 50s vintage look, with those powerful lips!
What she’s wearing right now:
Smoke Signals! Rondelle eyeshadow, in the center and on the browbone, smoked out with some of the darker shades in both the Gentle Fume and the Smoking Eyes palettes. Mineralize Skin Finish on cheeks in Northern Lights, and on the lips Brew Lipstick from the Smoke Signals collection, with Beurre Creamstick Liner.
Favorite super-secret makeup trick:
Edge your lip line with a little bit of Studio Fix Powder. It helps to provide a barrier so my lipstick doesn’t bleed, so I can wear my Lady Danger Lipstick all night long with no bleeding.

MAC Artist:
Chris Bustos
mac-artists-backstage5
Years with MAC:
5
Must have MAC Product:
Plushglass. It gives fullness to your lips. Plus, I have chapped lips, so it really helps because it has moisturizing agents in it. My favorite color is Cushy White.
What he’s wearing right now:
Select Tint Foundation
Favorite super-secret makeup trick:
Use Graph Black Pencil underneath on the waterline.

It’s raining lashes, HALLELUJIAH!

Now onto the looks! There was one thing that wasn’t missing from the Saturday night looks and that was lashes.
sac-mac-u-want-lashes

Richard Hallmarq

Check out these crazy lashes for the Richard Hallmarq show! Louise told me earlier that one of the reasons why I thought the makeup looked so washed-out on the runway was because of the lighting, but honestly, you could NOT miss these lashes from five miles away.

Don’t you love the cheeks? That’s Posy and Lady Blush on cheeks, and Luna cream color base around the eye. I *lurves* this!

Velvet Leaf

Heavy Lashes on the bottom along with a pop o’ color were a key elements in the look created by Victor for the designer Velvet Leaf.

Model Nora Shows the Final Velvet Leaf Look

sat-mac-yellow2

Remember your neon sweatshirt from the 80s? Super-charged brights are baaaaack. “There’s a trend called techno-colors that we’re seeing in Milan and Paris with lots of pops of color,” says Victor. “Think of it as colors with batteries included.”

Inspiration Behind the Look:
– Sad, wide-eyed dolls in velvet paintings from the 60s
– Precious Moments dolls (aww…)
– Sad innocence

MAC’s Look for Velvet Leaf
On the eyes:
– Bare Study Paint Pot
– No Mascara
– MAC #7 Lashes on lower lashes
– Primary Yellow Pigment
– Reflex Pearl Pigment
– Natural Brows

The only product on the lid was a layer of Bare Study Paint Pot. Victor’s used it in six of his nine shows, and it’s been quite a hit. “It’s a champagne shimmer, so it’s easy to wear,” he says. “It’s a great wedding color too! And because it is a paint pot it’s not going to crease or smudge.”

The models were given thick, blunt hairpieces for bangs that covered up the brows, so the brows were left natural. Three layers of Primary Yellow Pigment were added underneath the eyes, and then topped with a little bit of Reflex Pearl Pigment to add a sparkle. Here’s another Velvet Leaf model, Jessica Marie, who I met in the bathroom as she was tugging on her crazy bangs!

sat-mac-yellow3

Reflex Pearl is another favorite product of Victor’s, which he calls a very sophisticated glitter. “You can put in on top of lipsticks, on top of high cheekbones, anywhere — and you won’t look like you’re Forever 21 or Wet Seal.” LOL!

To give the lips color but less structure, Victor used MAC Sandy B Lipstick and applied it with a fluffy brush to buff up the lips to avoid making them too shaped. “It creates the dry, overly-frosty 60s lips that maybe Cher would wear back in the 60s,” says Victor.

And to create a plastic looking cheek (think mannequins and Barbies), he spun a 168 brush over and over the cheek with Pink Bronze Pigment to create a “plasticized” look.

Effie’s Heart

sat-mac-apple-red-powder-blush
Model, Katie Sue
sat-mac-r3
Another shot of Katie Sue
sat-mac-eh2
Here’s a pretty pop of color that’s more my style. The scarlet lip for the Effie’s Heart show was inspired by dry, velvety rose petals.

Inspiration behind the look:
– The silent film era, with a focus on structure and shape
– Rose petals

MAC’s look for Effie’s Heart includes:
– A thick line of Blacktrack Fluidline applied on lids with the 266 Brush
– A bright, matte, romantic lip, using Glam Lipstick applied as a stain with the 217
– Apple Red Blush added to the center of the lips, to create the dry, matte look
– Symmetry shadow (a grey brown) to create structure and a high contour up in the crease
– “Gobs and gobs” of Fashion Show Lashes

In the tent you’ll often here the term Fashion Show Lashes. What does it mean?

Fashion Show lashes means as much mascara as ou can possibly put on a model’s lashes to make them look chunky, thick and crazy. It’s not for streetwear, but it’s just when you think you have enough mascara you go back and add another coat to make it WAHHH! It’s three or four layers, and we don’t comb them through. The idea is to get them so chunky that from the runway they won’t look like they are spikey, thick and weird. We always use ProLash Mascara because it goes on thick, once it dries it builds really thick to the next coat. — Victor

Our last two looks are inspired by the Photoshaped series of runway looks MAC’s Web site. WE LIKEY!

Onerary

on1final
on6final
Inspiration behind the look:
-A woman in perfect candlelit lighting

The focus of this look is skin, and getting it to look as it perfect as it would during a romantic candlelit dinner with a single candle. “We want the girls to look almost Photoshopped,” says Victor. There’s lots of golds, warm-based browns and glowy skin.

MAC’s look for Onerary:
– Face: Pearl Cream Color base
– Eyes: Bare Study Paint Pot, Layers of Pro Lash Mascara
– Cheeks: Emote from the new Smoke Signals Collection
– Lips: Terra Cotta Lip Gelee

615 Project

Like Onerary, the look created for 615 Project echos the Photoshaped trend. The eyes have warm browns with a glossy center lid.

615-1final
615-2final
615-3final

Inspiration behind the look:
-A woman that’s traveled the world

MAC’s look for 615 Project:
– Eyes: Cocomotion Pigment on inner eye, A brown Cream Color Base on outer eye, Coffee liner (Victor’s favorite brown liner)
– Brushed up brows set with Brow Set
– “Fashion Show Lashes” with Pro Lash Mascara

San Francisco Fashion Week 2007 — MAC Cosmetics Creates Looks for Designers Kirribilla, Dcepcion, Evarize

August 25th, 2007 by Karen 4 Comments

Model Brooke showing the final Kirribilla Look

Last night I headed backstage with MAC Cosmetics for the second night of San Francisco Fashion Week 2007. My favorite look is what key MAC makeup artist Louise Zizzo created for the designer Kirribilla.

“The idea behind this is vintage Hawaiian,” says Louise. “It’s a very straightforward look but it has to be done well, otherwise it will look weird.”

The emphasis with this look is on the brows and the lips. “There’s that element of 50s in there with the very sexy brow and the stronger lip, but with a twist. It’s going to be a very defined brow, so not really fluffy, a little darker than their natural brow color,” says Louise.

The most beautiful part of the look is the lip, which is a combination of two colors — So Chaud, and orange color, and Chatterbox, pink.

The rest of the face is natural, with “nothing else, just foundation, no sculpting, just very plain, maybe with just subtle natural contour,” says Louise.

MAC’s Look for Kirribilla

– Strong Brows
– Strong Matte Lip with Orange and Pink tones (So Chaud and Chatterbox)
– Plain face

– Lots of naturals
– Focus on facial features
– No strong colors
– No mascara
– Lips have mirror-finished topcoat from Pro Longwear Lustre Lipstick
– the features of a male, and then just adding a little bit of femininity to it

And last here’s a stunning look created by key artist Louise Zizzo for the designer Evarize. This makeup makes me want to listen to Donna Summer and feather my hair.

News – Makeupandbeautyblog.com Goes Behind the Scenes with MAC Cosmetics for the Opening Night of San Francisco Fashion Week, August 23, 2007

August 24th, 2007 by Karen 4 Comments

MAC fans, ever wonder what goes on back stage when MAC does makeup for fashion shows? We’ve got the skinny here on www.makeupandbeautyblog.com!

Last night was the opening night of San Francisco Fashion Week 2007, so www.makeupandbeautyblog.com tagged along with the MAC makeup team to find out what really goes on backstage. MAC is sponsoring the makeup for all three nights, so I tried to do my best impression of your friendly neighborhood silent (but deadly) beauty blogging ninja! Armed with a big-ass camera and a voice recorder, I did my best to capture all of the backstage happenings just for you!

The show started at 8:00, but prepping takes hours. Key MAC makeup artists Victor Cembellin and Louise Zizzo started working their makeup mojo at 3:00, but yours truly arrived a lil’ late at 6:00 because I had to finish an editorial memo on the beauty book I’m editing and I got stuck in traffic. I still managed to observe lots of the action, and when I got to the hair and makeup tent the MAC team was in full force.

A few clips of the runway show

Plenty o’ Retro-Inspriation
At last night’s dinner Victor hinted that we’d be seeing a lot of retro-inspired looks, and it was evident in the three looks I watched them create for the Emerging Stars, Vian Hunter and Genevieve Primavera shows.

My Favorite Backstage Look – Blacktrack with Green Liquidlast on Top
Here’s my favorite, created by MAC for designer Vian Hunter. Louise first demonstrated the look on a model while the assistant MAC makeup artists watched. Side note: All of the MAC makeup artists had SUPER HOT makeup on! I could’ve spent all evening just taking pictures of them but I had a job to do, yo.

The Vian Hunter look was very 60s-sophisticated-society-lady-that-lunches, and was all about the eyes. The lid was covered in a solid layer of Blacktrack Fluidliner, and to make it really pop Louise layered a line of color on top of the Blacktrack by applying Greenplay Liquidlast Liner! So hot!
vianhunterfacechart

Louise on the look: “The look is kind of icy, dusty roses and almost holiday inspired. We wanted to do something that would show that side of [Vian Hunter’s] collection. Rather than just doing a black liner with icy cheeks and lips, we mixed it up a little bit [with the Liquidlast liner on top]. It’s also all about the lashes. With lashes on the bottom and on the top, it has a 60s feel to it. [The model] has on pink cream base on her cheeks and on her lips. Also on her cheeks she has Luna cream base. And there’s a little dusting of Frozen White Pigment on her lips, to give her a holographic, icy, reflective look.”

alexa-closeup

What It’s Like in the Tent
I then managed to squeeze myself into a group of MAC artists watching Victor demonstrate the look for the Genevieve Primavera show. And when I say squeeze I mean squeeze. The tent is long, narrow and crowded, so everyone — models, makeup, artists, hair stylists, friendly neighborhood beauty bloggers with big ole’ bums (ahem) — was packed in tight like sardines. Despite the fact that it was so hectic and tightly packed there was a real flow to the energy and the efficiency of the makeup artists. The MAC team is focused and intense, yet still very friendly, even when your bum accidentally bumps into an artist or two while they apply liner on a model. Oops.
busytent
model-donut-hair
busytent2

A Spacy 60s Runway Look – Silver Lids and Black Lined Eyes
The Genevieve Primavera look also did a nod to the 60s. Again, the focus was on the eye, with a silver lid and dark black liner applied around the entire eye and in the crease.
victorandbecky

Victor on the look: “Basically [the designer] wanted to do something like Edie Sedgwick and Audrey Hepburn – but in Space! It’s sort of futuristic, taking elements from the 60s and elements from Barbie and futurizing them. We’ll be doing black liquid eyeliner into the contour, and full on Silver Metal Pigment on the eyelid. It’s going to look off-the-hook crazy.”

The lids were the stand out feature. Victor mixed Silver Metal Pigment with Fix+ to create a runny metal liquid that looked like mercury. Kinda scary in a Terminator II-esque way, yet very pretty.
becky-final.jpg

Red Runway Lips
Louise prepped the last look for the “Emerging Stars” show. This look was very classic, with intense red lipstick and neutral eyes.

louise-applies-red-lips

MAC Touchups Behind the Runway

Louise then let me tag along with her as she left the tent to go backstage to prep the Emerging Stars models right before they hit the runway. The girls all wore black dresses, and with all of the tied back hair and the red lips I felt like I was magically transported into a Robert Palmer video circa 1986. For some bizarre reason I felt the need to be holding an electric guitar.
behindrunway

I then found Victor in a tiny closet just off the runway doing some last-minute fixes on the models for the Pink Elf show. Pink Elf is one of my favorite designers from the 2006 SF Fashion Week show, which I watched from the nosebleed seats in the audience. I had to literally pinch myself after I took these shots because it finally hit me that I was getting to see and do something I would have never dreamed of when I was sitting in the audience last year.
victorpinkelftouchups

We Make it into the Photography Pit!
There are unwritten laws when it comes to fashion shows, and one of them is that apparently they never start on time. Fellow beauty blogger Christine M. from Tempalia.com and I staked out a place at the end of the runway right next to the platform where all of the “official” photographers park. And I waited. And waited. And waited. During that time I got bitched out by a photographer for not having a press pass because I was a blogger, and technically not supposed to be there. I kept lurking next to the platform like a stalker, so when the show began I just started taking pictures like crazy and waited for someone official to kick my ass out. Luck was on my side though, when one of the “official” photographers actually invited me to stand next to him within the designated press area.
runwayshot1
When you are right in the middle of the photographers you can hear all of the click-click-clicking of the cameras going off and it’s surprisingly really loud. The energy that flowed once the photographers got to work was similar to the MAC artists backstage — focused, with an undercurrent of intensity. You feel them leaning with you as you take pictures, and the clicking of the cameras turns into this symphony of sound and light. It was really amazing. I actually ended up staying there and taking pics for the entire show!

When the models made it to the end of the runway, I tried hard to look for specific elements that the MAC artists used for each of the designers. Even though I was so close, I couldn’t always see the detailing that I know the makeup artists put so much hard work into just hours before. But that could’ve also been because I was stressed about being kicked out at any moment. The bolder elements really popped on the runway though, like the silver eyes for Genevieve Primavera, the heavy Blacktrack lid for Vian Hunter, and the red lips for Emerging Stars.

It was a fantastic experience. I’m exhausted, but so happy. What makes it even better is that I get to share it with ya’ll.

I’ll be there again tonight, so when you’re not busy getting your drank on at the open bar please come by and say hello!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Extra special thanks to Heather Park of MAC, who hooked this up all for www.makeupandbeautyblog.com. She worked it out the entire night in high heels and still managed to have a smile on her face. Thanks girl!

Last night Victor Cembellin and Louise Zizzo, MAC Senior Artists and key makeup artists for San Francisco Fashion Week 2007, hosted dinner at Perbacco restaurant in San Francisco, California. Writers, editors, beauty bloggers and key members of the MAC team met and mingled over drinks and dinner to discuss the upcoming fashion shows.

I had the pleasure of meeting many people involved in the San Francisco Bay Area fashion and beauty world, including Donna Kato, Style Editor at The San Jose Mercury News, Annie from the beauty Web site bellasugar.com and Christine M. from the blog Temptalia.com. And of course there were all the lovely folks at MAC, like Allison Greenberg and Heather Park, a Manager in MAC’s Global Communications and beauty blog connoisseur!

So what happens during a four-course meal when you get a bunch of beauty-obsessed writers, bloggers, and MAC Artists together? The conversation inevitably goes to the products. In between bites of heirloom tomato salad, filet mignon and truffle mashed potatoes, there were declarations of brush devotion (Victor loves the 266, Christine loves the 187), exclamations of life-changing MAC products (Heather swears by Mineralize Skinfinish and Liquidlast Liner), and the skinny on MAC makeup on the runway.

So what’s your favorite brush?

To create the looks for the 2007 runway, Victor and Louise first met with the designers at the San Francisco MAC Pro Store to discuss collections and the designer’s makeup vision. Victor says that this year we’ll be seeing a lot more ’40s-inspired looks and lots of sophisticated smokey eyes.

I was also not surprised to discover there’s an element of improv backstage when it comes to achieving a look. Last year, for the designer Genevieve Primavera’s show, the MAC makeup team at first had trouble creating a deep, dark goth lip with traditional pencils. Victor decided to improv by using Fluidline Liner in Macroviolet and applying the liner on the lips with the 266 brush. The result? Deep, dark-colored lips that would make any vampire jealous.

Heather and I talked at length about how beauty bloggers are changing the face of the beauty industry. She mentioned many interesting facts and statistics she’s learned since becoming MAC’s blog expert. Would you believe that 63% of women who read a positive review of a product in a beauty blog go out and purchase that product? Beauty bloggers are beginning to hold serious sway in the beauty product court, yet many traditional retailers and fashion show organizers don’t recognize blogging as a legitimate form of journalism. MAC is doing cutting edge work by cultivating relationships with bloggers; in due time I think we’ll see more and more cosmetics companies and retailers actively courting the blogosphere.

After dessert, a chocolate molten cake that sent me to chocoholic ecstasy, the dinner attendees received a lovely goody bag with MAC products from the new Smoke Signals Limited Edition Collection. I’m looking forward to reviewing all of it for you soon!

Who knew there were others out there who could wax philosophic for hours about the merits of concealer? It was a great evening with lively and interesting people, and I had a fantastic time.

I’m so glad that I get to share this with you! Have a stunning, yes stunning, Thursday.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
