The Weirdly Wearable Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss in Opulent Shines in Person (But Not So Much in Pics)

September 21st, 2012 by Karen 16 Comments

illamasqua opulent

I can’t decide if I like the new Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss in Opulent ($20) more because it’s weird, or because it’s wearable. A bit of both, I suppose.

In its tube, this blend of beige, gray and taupe could have fooled me. If I hadn’t known better, I would have guessed it was an eyeshadow. The complex color, the undercurrent of golden pearl, and the way it flashes purple and pink when the light hits it just right remind me more of traits I’d find in an eye product than something I’d slick on my lips.

Not that I’m complaining (at all).

I like it, but weird colors are always a risk… Some tend to sit unused at the bottom of my makeup bag like shipwrecks lost at sea (hear what I’m sayin’, Apocalips?).

But this time — hallelujah! — Illamasqua figured out how to combine weird and easy to wear.

The trick: they made it surprisingly sheer. When I’m standing in the shade, it’s a clear pinky beige on my lips, and not at all like the storm cloud of color it resembles in the tube. But then, when I step into full sunlight? — that’s when the real fun begins.

Wearing Opulent’s flecks of pink, gold and purple glitter, my kisser sparkles like Vampire Edward’s lips!

I tried to capture the effect in these pics, but I think it’s a little too subtle, except for some of the arm swatches, perhaps. In person, though, BAM!

Is It Real, or a Chanel Blue Illusion? The Chanel Blue Illusion de Chanel Collection

September 20th, 2012 by Karen 27 Comments

Chanel Blue Illusion de Chanel

KAREN: “Ya know, Tabs, I don’t see why you’re so cranky. I mean, you were the one who orchestrated this whole thing. You said, ‘I want a photo shoot!’ and I said, ‘Fine, you’re the boss.’ And — let me just pull up the text you sent on my phone here — it says, ‘Model some of the new Blue Illusion de Chanel collection eye makeup for me, and make it snappy! I don’t have all day.'”

TABS: “I don’t think I appreciate your attitude. I bet Naomi’s assistant doesn’t give her grief like this.”

KAREN: “Right, that’s because she’s too busy ducking all the phones being thrown at her…”

TABS: “Oh, very funny. You’re just lucky I hurt my paw playing football, otherwise I’d show you what a phone feels like.”

KAREN: “Listen, Tabs, this thing between us right now, this tension, it has to stop. You have a job to do, but so do I, and I need you to respect that. We both know that you’re the talent here, but I’m important, too, Tabs. I’m not your scratching post or your crinkly toy.”

TABS: “I know that! You don’t think I know that? You’re my assistant, so why don’t you do some assisting for a change and make me some gravy?”

KAREN: “Make it yourself. I’m on hiatus until you tell me what’s wrong.”

TABS: “I told you…I don’t want to talk about it.”

KAREN: “Well that’s too bad. Look — I’m just gonna come out and say it. Does this have something to do with Choupette?”

TABS: “I’m sorry but I don’t know anyone by that name…”

KAREN: “Choupette? Choupette Lagerfeld? I know you know who I’m talking about.”

TABS: “Okay, maybe.”

KAREN: “Tabs, just because Choupette prances around all day in her Chanel cat castle with Karl doesn’t mean you should feel threatened. Everyone who’s anyone in the kitty modeling industry knows that you’re the cat’s meow.”

TABS: “Really…? You’re not just saying that?”

KAREN: “Absolutely! I mean, sure, Choupette is cute. I’ll give her that, but she can’t command a room like you do. She doesn’t have the girth or the attitude, and I bet you even know more about Chanel than she does.”

TABS: “True. She wouldn’t know Riva from Jeans or Aurora.”

KAREN: “Exactly. So you see what I’m saying? You’re in a completely different league, Tabs. You have nothing to worry about. Now, if you’re feeling better, can I give you my report on the Blue Illusion pieces you asked me about?”

TABS: “Sure. You’re right. Let’s do that.”

KAREN: “Great. Well, the two $36 potted cream shadows, Illusion D’Ombres in Apparition and Destination, have a metallic, high-shine finish and blend beautifully on my lids. Unfortunately, if I don’t set them with a powder shadow on top, they also crease a ton within one or two hours.”

TABS: “Go on…”

KAREN: “The $29 Le Crayon Yeux Precision Eye Definer in Blue Aerien? — just okay. I think it’s super pretty on the lash line, especially on brown eyes, but it leaps off my water lines like a frog off a lilly pad. Plus, it feels a little hard… I wanted it to glide.”

Laura Mercier Kohl Eye Pencil in Black Gold Fuels My Love for Messy Rocker Chick Looks

September 19th, 2012 by Karen 18 Comments

laura mercier black gold

Most gilded liner groupies would be content to have MAC Powersurge tucked away in their makeup bags… Not this gal. I dream of a day I fling my drawers open and nearly drown under a deluge of shimmery bronze and gold liners!!

Greeting me like a friendly face on this path to gold and bronze liner glory is Laura Mercier’s Kohl Eye Pencil in Black Gold, $20 and available now in Laura’s permanent collection.

Darker than Powersurge and more gold than bronze, from its name, I thought this shimmery kohl would be darker, like a black liner lightly brushed with golden pearl, but it looks like more of a 50/50 split between black and gold to me. When I hold the swatch up to the light and wiggle my wrist, I see flashes of both beautiful shades.

Cool.

Makeup mavens may growl at its tendency to migrate. Although Black Gold clings to water lines fairly well (as long as I apply two layers, I don’t even need touch-ups), the smudgy, soft texture gets happy feet on oily lids, which is a little ironic considering its name. I’d say it behaves better than buttery MAC Feline (which I still love), but if your lids are oily at all, starting with a primer, and then setting Black Gold with a shadow on top, should discourage it from transferring into your crease when you blink.

A Fall Vice to Entice Those Who Long for New Hues and Love a Good Price: The Urban Decay Vice Palette

September 17th, 2012 by Karen 30 Comments

urban decay vice palette review
Wearing the Urban Decay Vice Palette eyeshadows in Nevermind, Desperation and Unhinged on my eyes

Maybe the cray amounts of overtime Tabs has had me working lately and the 20+ hours of Friday Night Lights I’ve watched since last Friday are slowly but surely frying my brain, because choosing which eyeshadow colors I want to wear when I do my makeup has been way tougher than usual.

It’s like, I see the pans sitting in front of me as one big, nebulous blob. Does this green go with that one? Should I wear bronze or brown?

Honestly, right now, I have no idea…

Coming to the rescue, ironically with 20 more shades? — the new Urban Decay Vice Palette ($59 and available now online at urbandecay.com).

urban decay vice palette

I can’t remember the last time Urban Decay released a palette with so many new colors! All 20 of them have never before seen the light of day (although a few of them do resemble existing colors).

And that’s not even my favorite part.

Somehow, the shades in the Vice palette, which is packed with neutrals and sprinkled with brights, all go together. Seriously, I feel like I can pair any two of them on my lids, pop a third shade along my lower lash line and KAPOW! — instant eye game that requires very little brain power.

Not that I’m in my right mind right now…but nothing here seems out of place.

You could start with one of the lighter colors all over your lids, add one of the darker shades in the outer corners of your eyes, and define your lower lash lines by lining with one of the bright or neutral shades.

This Bargain Holiday Kit Will Have You Singing Songs of Savings: The New Anastasia Kisses on My List Volume 2 Hydrafull Gloss Set

September 13th, 2012 by Karen 31 Comments

Wearing the New Anastasia Kisses on My List Volume 2 Hydrafull Gloss in Sharona

Um…like I really needed another excuse to randomly bust out in song today.

Sun’s up? That’s a good reason. Cup of coffee? That’s a good reason. Tabs hasn’t scratched my ankles yet? That’s a good reason. Waiting in line at Trader Joe’s, taking Tabs for a walk, indoor plumbing, having ice cream for dinner, sitting in front of the computer like I am right now? All good enough reasons.

But lately, I’ve been singing aloud with even more gusto than usual, like I’m stuck in an a very special episode of Glee (guest starring Tabs the Cat and Karen of Makeup and Beauty Blog), and I MUST EMOTE! 🙂

I wonder if it has something to do with Anastasia…

I’ve been wearing the new glosses in her latest set a lot this week, and not just because they shine like my tubby tabby’s eyes.

Most of the glosses in the limited edition $30 holiday Kisses on My List Volume 2 Hydrafull Gloss Set of six full-size tubes are named after a different old-school jam.

There’s Lola, a shimmery, cool pink that changes to a deeper hue after a few minutes on the lips (Anastasia calls these Hypercolor glosses); Maggie May, a sheer and creamy nude; Jolene, a shimmery rose (another one of the Hypercolors); Roxanne, a shimmery gold (also a Hypercolor); and Sharona, a sheer and shimmery peach.

The only one I don’t recognize from a song is Moi, a sheer and creamy pink (got any ideas about the name?).

The other day I took out Roxanne and applied a single layer.

No, it did not sting. 🙂 Nor did the police arrive (ba-dum bum!).

But I did feel inspired to pretend the tube was a microphone and belted out, “Rrrrrox-anne! You don’t have to put on the red light!” in the middle of my living room.

You might be thinking, “K, you so crazy! I love good glosses too, but there’s no way one would make me sing in public or my living room.”

You never know, my friend. Even if you’re the silent type, this set is one heck of a deal. In the set, the glosses work out to just $5 per tube, versus the $18 they usually sell for individually.

The New Anastasia Want You to Want Me Holiday Kit Sings Songs of Soft Satin Finishes and Long-Lasting Wear

September 10th, 2012 by Karen 33 Comments

anastasia want you to want me palette

I have an urgent and important question for you, friend!

Are you ready…?

Brace yourself. Here goes: what’s your karaoke song?

LOL!

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t important in the Merriam-Webster sense of the word, but I’m curious.

Me? I have a couple of musical standbys honed by the fires of fifty Filipino family gatherings! Seriously, you can always count on two things at a Filipino party — 1) a redonkulous amount of food and 2) karaoke! 🙂

Myself, I like to warm up with a little Phil Collins…

“She’s an easy lover! She’ll take your heart but you won’t feel it!”

And then really get the crowd going with Cheap Trick…

“I waaaant yoooo to want meeee!”

The later meets the three crucial criteria of a top karaoke song. It’s upbeat, almost everyone knows the words to it (so they can sing along), and it doesn’t require any complex vocal gymnastics, which is good because I reserve that kind of thing for my car or shower.

Next time I hit the mic (hopefully soon — karaoke, anyone?), I’m wearing Anastasia’s new holiday 2012 eye makeup kit, because not only does it pay homage to my go-to karaoke tune, but the colors are just plain pretty!

The $34 limited edition Want You to Want Me kit’s lush velvet case houses enough eye makeup to keep your eyes glowing softly while you rock all night long.

The kit includes…

  • A gift box with a velvet cover, chain detailing and a magnetic closure (so pretty!)
  • An eyeshadow palette with nine powder shades in mostly shimmery brown, beige, taupe and purple colors; the palette pops out of the larger velvet box for easy touch-ups on the road
  • A black liquid eyeliner with a thin brush applicator
  • A clear brow gel
  • A small dual-tipped brush

Longer, Thicker Lashes With the New LORAC Pro Mascara, and a Conversation With My Inner Drag Queen

September 7th, 2012 by Karen 11 Comments

lorac pro mascara review

Karen’s Inner Drag Queen: Time to do it to it, Miss Thang. Get up! I am not about to spend all day and night watching Animal Planet on the couch.

Karen: Okay, but —

Karen’s Inner Drag Queen: Wash your face! Brush your teeth! Remove that hideous scrunchie from your hair! And swipe some makeup on before I start going through glitter withdrawals!

Karen: Dude, seriously — chill! You really need to be nice to me right now because I feel like a drum exploded in my head!

Karen’s Inner Drag Queen: I’m sorry, baby girl, but you know what they say — sometimes you gotta be cruel to be kind. 🙂

And since I’m founder and CEO of our fabulousness, I’m taking the reins. I am not about to let this migraine bring us down. You and I are way too sexy for this crap!

Karen: Okay, okay… I know better than to get in your way.

You’re the boss. What do you want me to do first? Please bear in mind that whatever we do I intend to continue wearing these sweats. That’s non-negotiable.

Karen’s Inner Drag Queen: Wha?!

Karen: Look into my eyes…

Karen’s Inner Drag Queen: Alright, fair enough.

Let’s start with the basics then. Fill in those caterpillar brows first, and then please do something about that whole thing goin’ on over there…

Karen: Where? Over here? Under my eyes?

Karen’s Inner Drag Queen: Mmm-hmm.

…

Karen: All done. Next?

Karen’s Inner Drag Queen: Good. Now give those lashes some love.

Here, use my new LORAC Pro Mascara ($23)…

Karen: Ooh! Cool tube. And it’s huge!

What a cute brush, too. It’s shaped like a tear, aww. And the tip is so pointy! I bet it really grabs lashes in the inner and outer corners.

Karen’s Inner Drag Queen: Oh, yeah. It’s good for black, glossy lashes, way long and thick, and you’re gonna love how easy it is to build up in layers. I’m talkin’ drama! It kinda reminds me of YSL’s Faux Cils like that.

The only thing, though, and you’ll notice this I’m sure, is that you have to dilute the wand first — like, you know, swipe it on something to get rid of the excess; otherwise, it gets hella clumpy!

Karen: Okay, but is it flaky (like you know who)? And what about smears?

Karen’s Inner Drag Queen: Naw, at least not for me. And the separation and curl hold are pretty fab.

Karen: Alright. Let’s do three layers…

You Can’t Deny The Attraction to Illamasqua Magnetism Lipstick

September 6th, 2012 by Karen 17 Comments

Illamasqua Magnetism Lipstick

Like a moth to a flame… I could see that’s how it was for you when you saw me standing there all dressed in black.

There was something in the air between us, a force bringing us together, something invisible. I know you felt it, too.

It drew you to me, coaxed you forward. I watched as you looked down at your feet, intoxicated by my beauty, and took a step toward me. First your right foot, and then your left. But it wasn’t you who moved them, was it? They moved of their own accord, powerless against me.

When your arms slowly drifted upward and away from your body, reaching for me as if on strings, and I saw that the hairs on your arms were also standing, I knew that you were mine.

“Try me,” I whispered, as you held me in your warm embrace. And you did as you were told.

You opened my cap slowly and then —

Gasp! You saw what I was wearing underneath…

A creamy raspberry pink, and the curves! Such beautiful curves!

You tried to look away, knew that you had to look away, but it was no use. You were caught like a fish on a hook. Illamasqua’s new Lipstick in Magnetism ($24.50) had secured her prey.

Illamasqua Magnetism Lipstick

You covered the distance between us in less than a second, drawing me along your lips. “Where should we go?” you whispered into my cap.

“This way…” I replied, my voice little more than a sigh.

Gently, you placed me into your snakeskin clutch, and I felt my temperature rise.
