The Highlighting Power of Rosebud Salve

May 6th, 2010 by Karen 28 Comments

Written by Julianne

Today Julianne of The Family Julas shares an unconventional way to put a beauty cult classic to work.

We all know the famous Smith’s Rosebud Salve, the famed multi-purpose medicating machine in the pretty tin can. You can use it on your lips, on your skin, and on your diaper rash.  It’s always sold right by the cashiers at Sephora with all of the other beauty musts, like the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. It’s an American classic.

However, you may be underestimating the true power of your tin of Rosebud. While it’s pretty on the outside, and pretty on your lips (maybe not so much on your diaper rash…), it’s also a very pretty highlighter. While droves of makeup addicts have long been spending heaps of cash on Benefit’s High Beam or MAC’s Strobe Cream and other facial equivalents to blinding Christmas lights, the solution to your highlighting woes may be sitting in your purse.

Maximize Your Flirty Fringe with Rimmel The Max Volume Flash Mascara

May 6th, 2010 by Karen 45 Comments

Rimmel The Max Volume Flash Mascara Review

Today Tabs refused to return my tube of Max Volume Flash Mascara ($7), and now we’re not talking…

When I offered to trade for some Sonia K., he turned his back to me, whipped out his iPhone, and sent me this text:

“Sonia = 2008, Rimmel = 3000-and-late.”

I suppose he was trying to say that Sonia K. had better watch her back if she hopes to keep the tabby cat drugstore beauty market happy because the competition got fierce! Rimmel’s been hitting product homers galore.

Bobbi Brown Made Treatment Lip Shine a Lippie Triple Threat

Bobbi Brown Treatment Lip Shine

Back in my musical theater days, I wasn’t one of those people who could do it all — sing, dance AND act. They existed, though, little jacks and jills of all trades on the stage, and we called them triple threats!

Neutrogena Hydrating Cleansing Towelettes: Another Great Reason to Wear Makeup

May 5th, 2010 by Karen 40 Comments

neutrogena makeup remover cleansing towelettes hydrating review

Reason No. 352 to love makeup: It provides a valid excuse to test new ways to REMOVE makeup. 🙂

This may not come as a complete surprise, but I have a soft spot for makeup wipes… What can I say? I appreciate anything that helps me feel productive while my booty’s parked in front of the TV (SIDE NOTE: I’m caught up on episodes of Entourage now; two thumbs up! Can’t wait for the new season to start).

Lately I’ve been testing Neutrogena’s new Hydrating Cleansing Towelettes ($7 for 25). As the newest addition to Neutrogena’s line of makeup removing wipes, they come pre-moistened with glycerin and the soothing extracts of cucumber and aloe.

The $14 Urban Decay Face Case

May 4th, 2010 by Karen 48 Comments

urban decay face case review

They say good things come in small packages, and in the matter of Urban Decay’s Face Case, it’s true.

Well… mostly.

The small price for this cutie pie initially caught my eye — a mere $14 for a complete makeup palette for eyes, lips and cheeks! Gotta love a steal of a deal. 🙂

Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Bronzer: Orange You Glad You Found This Bronzer?

May 4th, 2010 by Karen 36 Comments

smashbox halo hydrating perfecting bronzer review

Once upon a time, a bronzer without orange undertones was about as hard to find as a straight dude into Lifetime movies (love the Tori Spelling ones). Oh, how the times have changed!

A scene from the Lifetime/T-Spell tour de force, “Co-ed Call Girl”

Homies, say buh-bye to the days of orange Oompa Loompa skin and hola to Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Bronzer ($39).

Part of the Naked Beauty collection for summer 2010, Smashbox created this golden brown bronzer with a matte finish to universally flatter all skin tones. Not only is the color supposed to work on everyone, Smashbox says Halo also hydrates skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

I’ve been wearing it for the last few days and found Halo has a lot of good stuff to offer.

Smashbox Hyperlash Mascara: The One-Hit Wonder

May 3rd, 2010 by Karen 36 Comments

smashbox hyperlash mascara review

Lovely lashes after just one coat? Like, when does that happen? Mascaras that only need one layer to work well are even rarer than hit movies starring J. Lo (still lovin’ ya, Jenny!).

Maybe that’s why I like Smashbox Hyperlash Mascara ($21, available in a single shade called Blackest Black). A single coat makes lashes look visibly thicker, darker, smoother and uber-glossy. The tips of my lashes fan out at the corners, too, for that doe-eyed lash look I really love.

Straight up, I can’t remember the last time I thought the first coat of a mascara looked this good.

Should You Be Sweet on Tokidoki’s Perfetto Eyeliner?

May 1st, 2010 by Karen 23 Comments

A few weeks ago, at the height of my torrid affair with Tokidoki makeup, I picked up this cute little number. It’s a liquid liner called Perfetto Eyeliner in Donutella ($16, a medium pink, one of eight shades).

Everything about it just screamed, “Lurve me, Karen!” — the little girl with the donut skirt, the fine felt-tip pen, the pigmented, creamy pink liner…

But the minute I got it on my eyes, I exclaimed, “Oh, boy!”
