Hard Candy Hot Smudge for Spring/Summer 2010: The $6 Dream Cream Eyeliner

May 21st, 2010 by Karen 20 Comments

hard candy hot smudge review

If you’re totally over lugging everything and the kitchen sink around in your purse (and that includes your bloated makeup bag), can I just say I feel your pain? Here’s what I had in my over-the-shoulder boulder holder today (cat not included)…

Do you carry enough eyeliner/eyeshadow in your purse to adorn a platoon of sassy drag queens? If so, then it’s time for a makeup intervention.

Streamline that makeup bag with Hard Candy’s newest edition to their permanent line, the $6 Hot Smudge Cream Eyeliner/Smudge Shadow Duos for spring/summer 2010 (available at Wal-Mart).

Six bucks gets ya two creamy colors that work as both eyeliners and eyeshadows, along with a dual-ended brush for lining and smudging. And get this: the brush actually works! I usually throw out (or set aside) the brushes that accompany products because 9/10 times they aren’t great, but this one lays down precise lines with ease.

The Body Shop Nomadic Goddess Baked Powder Bronzer in Warm Glow Is First to Leave the Party

May 20th, 2010 by Karen 27 Comments

the body shop nomadic goddess makeup collection

Shhh… Do you hear that?

That’s the sound of The Body Shop’s new Baked Powder Bronzer in Warm Glow ($21) whispering, “Come take a closer look.” 🙂

One of two new powder bronzers in the Nomadic Goddess summer makeup collection, Warm Glow appears aptly named, imparting a golden brown sheen with hints of peachy pink and faint micro-glitter.

First, would I call it a bronzer? Well, that depends. Darker divas might find that it makes a better highlighter or blush. In my case, I don’t feel it’s dark enough to contour with, and I probably wouldn’t use it as a basic bronzer. Lighter lovelies, on the other hand, should get to use it both ways — as a bronzer or a blush — with more of the brown coming through on their skin.

The Body Shop says they make this and their other powder products by hand, baking them in terracotta discs that bind the pigments together. I can see it now… men and women dressed like cooks in a kitchen, covered from head to toe in excess powder!

Illamasqua Blush in Lover Is Like a Coral on the Hush

May 19th, 2010 by Karen 39 Comments

illamasqua lover blush

When the cold goes away, the corals come out to play. It happens every summer just like clockwork; lovely little coral blushes bloom on makeup counters galore.

It’s great if you happen to love coral, but what if you feel it’s too intense for your skin tone?

illamasqua lover blush

Here’s an idea: you could try something like Illamasqua’s Powder Blush in Lover ($23).

illamasqua lover blush

It’s more of an apricot with a matte finish than a vibrant coral, subtler than, say, MAC Hipness, but with just enough pigment to give cheeks a light kiss of color.

Neutrogena Nourishing Eyeliner: So Smooth It’s Almost Criminal

May 19th, 2010 by Karen 48 Comments

neutrogena nourishing eyeliner review

QUESTION: How smooth are Neutrogena Nourishing Eyeliners?

ANSWER: Well, they’re about a billion times smoother than this dude…

Like Tom Cruise’s feet in that scene from Risky Business, these richly pigmented $8 drugstore liners practically glide, in this case across lash and water lines.

They’re part of Neutrogena’s permanent makeup collection and come in six eye-illuminating shades — Twilight Blue, Brown Sugar, Brushed Pewter, Plum Drop, Cosmic Black and Spiced Chocolate.

Eyeko Has an Eye for Nail Polishes in Spring and Summer 2010

May 18th, 2010 by Karen 28 Comments

eyeko nail polish

Girl, I’ve got my Eyeko Eye on you — Eyeko as in the London-based beauty brand that’s part manga at heart. Manga? You know, the Japanese comic art form? Eyeko flat-out loves the stuff.

Ironically, I don’t really see manga reflected in their five new spring/summer nail colors, but they still score mega-adorable points from me for their dainty .30 oz. bottles, darling labels and edgy colors.

Eyeko Nail Polishes for Spring and Summer 2010

  • Petite: a creamy, semi-transparent baby pink
  • Tea Rose: a creamy rose
  • Posh: a creamy taupe
  • Coral: a creamy reddish coral
  • Vampira: a semi-matte black with red glitter

You may recall some Eyeko polishes we talked about back in December. These are even better. Where those applied streaky with bubbles, these go on as smooth as silk.

Sandal-Ready Feet in a Week? That’s Quite a Feat. My Tow-Up Tootsies Test Drove Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Creme

May 17th, 2010 by Karen 45 Comments

burts bees coconut foot creme review

To all my ladies with naturally smooth, gorgeous feet footprints, this post is NOT for you. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve still got mad love (and envy) for your photogenic tootsies, but the rest of us living in cracked heel hell, well, we’re the ones who need help.

After spending the winter ignoring everything around my ankles, I’ve ended up with two very cracked heels and a few square feet of scaly skin. My feet, as my eighth-grade self might describe them, look “hella gross,” and it’s time for action. I’ve started testing Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Creme ($9 for a 4.34 oz. tube). I sure hope it helps me turn my tootsies around in time for sandal season.

burts bees coconut foot creme review

One of Burt’s three foot creams, it’s been out for a while, but this is the first time I’ve given it a try. The company says it prevents and protects dry, cracked or rough skin with deeply penetrating emollient botanical oils.

Sounds good, right?

Well, it gets fantastic ratings on the Burt’s Bees website ( 5 stars97% recommendation rate!), so I couldn’t wait to give it a try.

YSL Fard Lumière Aquarésistant Water Resistant Cream Eyeshadow: For Eyes Like an Oasis

May 14th, 2010 by Karen 11 Comments

A desert princess might wear Yves Saint Laurent’s Water Resistant Cream Eyeshadow in Golden Sands to a royal banquet, but I’d probably wear it to the club. 🙂

New to YSL’s makeup line, it’s a very light, airy mousse eyeshadow, thinner than a regular cream but thicker than a liquid. One of six colors overall, it’s the only one to come out for summer 2010 (available now).

ysl summer 2010 makeup

For $30, you get 0.22 oz of light peachy golden glitter for your eyes, like a sunset in a jar. As a shimmery wash over the entire lid, it’s a marvel, water-resistant and easier to use than a glittery powder that might leave fallout on my cheeks.

ysl summer 2010 makeup

This particular shade isn’t very pigmented at all; it’s almost like glitter suspended in a mousse base, but judging by the swatches online, some of the other colors pack a stronger punch.

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick in Pink Lychee Lasts but a Moment, yet Still Makes an Impression

May 13th, 2010 by Karen 42 Comments

ysl pink lychee

There’s something poetic about Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick in Pink Lychee ($30) — how pretty yet fleeting it is, like butterflies, or a summertime tan.

By all appearances…

It’s one of two limited edition SPF 15 Pure Shine Lipsticks YSL released with their summer 2010 collection, the other being Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick in Blood Orange Blood Orange.

The first thing I thought after seeing it in the tube? — wow, that sure looks pale. I didn’t think I’d be able to wear it, but I’ve been surprised so many times before that I figured, who knows, right?

I really didn’t know what to expect and hoped it wouldn’t have that p0rn star opaque coverage we’ve seen from other light pink lippies.
