A Frederic Malle Perfume Adventure: Barneys New York in Las Vegas

February 18th, 2008 by Karen 43 Comments

Once inside the fantastical world of the Barneys New York department store in Las Vegas, I felt like I was trapped on an expensive planet. The native inhabitants were friendly and well groomed, yet there was something off about them. Maybe it was the scent of money in the air. I felt sweaty and nervous when the staff spoke to me, like they might be cyborgs. Expensive cyborgs.

If this is your first time to Makeup and Beauty Blog, welcome and thanks for visiting. For a review of one of Frederic Malle’s newest fragrances, check out Frederic Malle Geranium Pour Monsieur Is for Ladies and Gentlemen.

I made my way toward the cosmetics department. I was looking for makeup and beauty brands I’d never seen before, and my research before the trip suggested that Barneys, located in the Palazzo Hotel on the Vegas strip, wouldn’t let me down.

My first reaction was disappointment. I was seeing all the same high end stuff also carried by Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s — YSL, Chantecaille, T. LeClerc. Yawn.

The street entrance to Barneys New York in Las Vegas

I’d almost given up, and then it was there, at the very heart of the store. They resembled two empty telephone booths, or perhaps teleportation chambers, standing beside a display with several scientific looking bottles and a sign that read, “Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle.” Holla!

barneys-new-york-2

I began at one end of the display and sniffed my way to the other. With each scent, I grew more intrigued. Raul, a Barney’s sales associate with the smoothest hands I’d ever seen on a man, noticed my eyes rolling back into my head (seriously, some of the scents were *that* good) and proceeded to fill me in on the line.

One of the perfumes, Carnal Flower
carnal-flower.jpg

Nine famous perfumers (noses) developed their own individual perfumes for the Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle collection. These are some of the most famous noses of our time. Without limits or boundaries placed upon them by anyone, each perfumer received free reign over their creations, resulting in the 16 scents that make up the line. You won’t find watered down eau de toilettes or body splashes here; each of the scents is complex and interesting in its own way.

When you test perfumes sprayed onto paper strips at a perfume counter, the scent’s top notes grab you (the initial burst of fragrance). If your nose is hyper-sensitive like mine, you might even smell the paper.

But you could be missing the more subtle aspects of the fragrance — the middle notes (which occur after the top notes fade), and then the dry down (which is like the scent’s finale). To appreciate the fullness and complexity of the Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle scents, Raul suggested I ditch the paper strips and use one of the store’s special scent chambers to fully appreciate the line.

A little scurred of the chamber…
barneys-new-york-4

The two phone booth/teleportation chambers are actually scent chambers. I’m claustrophobic, but Raul assured me that I wouldn’t have to step into the chamber to get the full experience, just stick my head in.

Raul explaining how the chamber works

Raul flipped a switch to activate fans installed in the ceiling of each chamber and then sprayed a fragrance from the line into each one — En Passant (a light floral) on the left, and Noir Epices (a spicy Oriental) on the right.

I took a whiff of each and instantly fell in love with En Passant. Created by perfumer Olivia Giacobetti and described as an “impressionistic” fragrance on the Editions de Parfums Web site, En Passant combines the scent of white lilac flower with orange tree leaves, cucumber and wheat. I could detect all of the different layers and rich fullness in the scent chamber. I couldn’t help but picture fields of lilac flowers and freshly laundered cotton sheets. Heaven!

Sniffing En Passant perfume is heavenly
head-in-chamber.jpg

A few other fragrances that I smelled and liked were…

Iris Poudre by Pierre Bourdon – Tonka bean, musk, vanilla, sandal wood and vetiver.
Nose fun fact: In 1988 Pierre created one of my favorite men’s fragrances of all time, Davidoff Cool Water.

Carnal Flower by Dominique Ropion – Tuberose, coconut and musk.
Nose fun Fact: Dominique, along with perfumers Loc Dong and Carlos Benaim, created Calvin Klein Euphoria, winner of the 2006 Fragrance Foundation (Fifi) Award, the equivalent of the “Oscars” in the perfume world.

Lipstick Rose by Ralf Schwieger – Violet, musk, vanilla, vetiver and amber… and it really does smell like a tube of lipstick!
Nose fun fact: Ralf has created several famous perfumes, including Yves Saint Laurent’s Baby Doll and Marc Jacobs’ Men.

This refrigerator, located beneath the display, keeps the fragrances fresh
perfume-fridge.jpg

Prices range from $115-$330, depending on the scent (some are more expensive then others) and size (50-100ml). Here in the US, the Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle line is exclusive to Barneys New York stores. To find the one nearest you, check out their Web site. If you don’t live near a Barneys, you can also order the scents online or call a store and place your order over the phone using a credit card.

Aren’t you glad we’re done with Monday? I’m still tired from traveling so it’s early to bed for this girl tonight. I hope your day was good and that you’re feeling relaxed and happy.

Gimme, Gimme Moisture: Peter Thomas Roth Mega Rich Moisture Masque

February 16th, 2008 by Karen 18 Comments

An oasis of opulence and glam, Las Vegas sits in the middle of the Southwestern American desert, and the dry air here zaps what little moisture exists in my already parched skin, leaving it feeling tight and uncomfortable. Before braving the casinos this morning (momma’s gotta win big to fund her Sephora run!), I remedied the situation with facial moisturizing TLC, courtesy of Peter Thomas Roth’s Mega Rich Intensive Anti-Aging Cellular Masque.

peter-thomas-roth-mega-rich.jpg

Product: Peter Thomas Roth Mega Rich Intensive Anti-Aging Cellular Moisture Masque
Use: A moisturizing masque to hydrate normal, dry or sensitive skin
Price: $60
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+

Unlike clay masks with thick, heavy consistencies, PTR’s moisturizing mask feels light. The consistency upon application reminds me of Lubriderm body lotion but feels even lighter and less sticky than that. A product’s scent helps determine whether or not I would use it regularly, and PTR’s light, slightly medicinal scent smells nice and fades quickly.

I slathered a layer upon my face, neck and decollete and left it on for 10 minutes. The mask dried but didn’t flake off like most clay masks will. The formula actually seemed to soak into my skin. After rinsing it off and looking at myself in the mirror, my skin looked and felt smoother and less irritated.

What’s in this magical, moisturizing brew? Let’s see… in addition to edible-sounding (although the product is not approved for consumption) ingredients like sweet almond oil, aloe vera and pomegranate, PTR contains a laundry list of scientific-ish anti-aging compounds like Firma-Cell-4, Syn-Coll and Argire-Line, which, according to the product packaging, work together to combat fine lines and deep wrinkles. I have to be up front — I find it really hard to quantify how effective anti-aging products are because I’m 32 and don’t have a lot of wrinkles (yet, ha!). Looking in the mirror, I tried to see a difference in my fine lines but couldn’t really detect a change, so I’m not sold on the anti-aging aspect. To be fair, my results could be different after a more extended bout of testing.

But the mask is still incredibly moisturizing, making it a fantastic addition to any dry skinned gal’s (or guy’s) skin routine. I could really feel the difference out here in the dry desert air.

Today, I’ve got a few fun things lined up. First up, breakfast at our hotel, the Golden Nugget.

golden-nugget-las-vegas1.jpg

At some point today, I plan to win a jackpot while playing the slot machines (gotta think positive!). Then, I’ll head to the strip to visit Sephora and the cosmetics section of Barney’s New York department store. I hope to find a bunch of brands I can’t get back in the Bay. I suspect El Hub will drag me out of makeup nirvana and force me to eat lunch at a buffet, sigh. Viva Las Vegas!

Jump Start Your Morning: Wei East Intensive Herbal Eye Treatment Pads

February 15th, 2008 by Karen 18 Comments

Non-morning people of the world, unite! Before my morning coffee, I’m a puffy-eyed, grumpy beast. If you are, too, then I’ve got your new best friend right here: Wei East’s Intensive Herbal Eye Treatment Pads.

wei-east-intensive-herbal-eye-treatment-1-fiinal.jpg

Infused with an herbal blend of green tea, chrysanthemum extract and peppermint, these disposable herbal eye pads refresh and de-puff tired, sleepy eyes (like mine). This morning I crawled out of bed, fired up the coffee and tore open a pack. The pads rest gently upon your puffy eyelids. There’s no adhesive, so you have to lie down or tilt your head back to keep them in place. I chillaxed on the couch for 10 minutes while the coffee brewed.

wei-east-intensive-herbal-pads-karen-final.jpg

They’re wonderful right after getting up in the morning, when you’re mind is in that shady zone between fast asleep and half-awake. With subtle notes of tea and peppermint, the soft pads cool and refresh the senses. Relaxing on the couch, I let my mind wander, reflecting upon the day ahead. After 10 minutes, my eyes weren’t as puffy as they were before, and I felt invigorated, refreshed and ready to rumble.

One box of 16 packets (each packet holds two pads) runs $36, which breaks down to about $2.76 per pack. Yes, I probably could have simulated a cheaper version of the experience with a candy cane and a wet washcloth, but on extra-rough mornings when I can barely even grunt or gesture, these pads will be worth it. Sometimes, you need all the help you can get in the morning, and Wei East’s pads could be just the thing to make the morning a lil’ bit easier.

Purchase Wei East Intensive Herbal Eye Treatment pads at at Weieast.com.

Well, we *finally* made it to Friday! Are you ready for this jelly? You better be! Reporting live from Las Vegas, Nevada…

Dark Circles Be Gone: Dior Long-Wearing Moisturizing Concealer

February 12th, 2008 by Karen 37 Comments

The beauty gurus at Nordstrom have been telling me to keep an eye on Dior. Big things are being predicted from the line, and Dior counters are popping up at Nordie’s stores across the US.

But with the exception of DiorShow Mascara, I haven’t had much experience with Dior, so I was curious about their other products. A few weeks ago I decided to try a tube of Dior Long-Wearing Moisturizing Concealer in Medium Beige ($27). Shannon Blunden, a fantastic makeup artist and the Cosmetics and Fragrance Manager at Nordstrom in Union Square, sold me on the product after using it to conceal my dark undereye circles. It also worked well on my eyelids as a shadow primer. Check it:

nordstrom-makeover-dior.jpg

Undereye circles be gone, yo!

Shannon first discovered Dior concealer a few years ago doing wedding makeup on a bride who insisted upon using it for her big day. After seeing how well it worked, Shannon was hooked. It soon became the only concealer she would use on herself or her clients.

dior-concealer-product-shot.jpg

Dior concealer has a slightly thicker consistency than my go-to concealer, MAC Select Moisturecover. It’s also more heavily pigmented, which makes it a bit tricky to work with. Forget slap-it-on-and-go here.

Using the smallest little dab, I apply Dior slowly, layer by layer, and blend like crazy. It takes time to blend sufficiently, but rushing through the job will show lines of demarcation on your skin.

Applied correctly, Dior Moisturizing Concealer looks seamless. I can barely tell I’m wearing any concealer at all. It does take a lil’ bit of work, though, and you know me … lazy to the Nth degree. First using a layer of something like Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primer to “cushion” the product makes it easier to blend, and I found that a drop of foundation to the undereye area did wonders. When used to cover a base product, Dior Moisturizing Concealer becomes far easier to layer and blend.

Like the name says, the formula has supreme staying power without drying the skin under my eyes. After a few hours, some moisturizing concealers migrate into my fine lines like crazy. Dior does, too, but not as much as MAC Select Moisturecover.

The catch, unfortunately (there’s always a catch), is the limited shade selection. For now, there are only three colors to choose from: Light Beige, Medium Beige and Light Golden. The product is also heavily perfumed and smells strongly of baby powder. My sensitive nose protested at first, but the scent faded quickly.

At $27, it ain’t cheap, but you get a big tube. I found I only needed to use a few drops on my dark circles and guess that one tube would last me at least a year.

Because of how easily it applies, my tube of MAC Select Moisturecover still reigns supreme on super lazy days, but when time is not of the essence and I want to look my best, I’ll reach for Dior’s Moisturizing Concealer, fo’ sho.

MAC Fafi: The Things I Do For Love

February 10th, 2008 by Karen 137 Comments

“…you see, I’m a beauty writer, and I’d like to share pictures of the MAC Fafi display and some swatches on my blog.”

“Yeah, well, I’m sorry, but you can’t take pictures in here.”

“Please, is there any possible way? These are die hard, loyal MAC fans, and I’d really like to let them see color swatches of the line. They are so excited, and most of them intend to spend a lot of money on it. I could give a special mention to your store…”

“Sorry, NO! It’s policy. I can’t let you do that.”

Note to file: ’tis usually a BAD IDEA to tell a journalist “no” because come hell or high water, she’ll find a way to get what she wants. Behold, the forbidden MAC Fafi display:

mac-cosmetics-fafi-display.jpg

Approaching the MAC store yesterday my spider sense started tingling. I knew deep in my veins the powers-that-be would not let me get swatches and take pictures of Fafi without a fight. I had El Hub, my getaway driver and co-conspirator, circle around the block a few times, with me ducked down in the passenger seat beside him, so I could case the joint before embarking upon the mission. Peering into the store as we circled the block, I could see what I’d be up against.

mac-cosmetics-fafi-drive-by.jpg

Inside were four makeup artists busy with six customers. I contemplated my Fafi swatch strategy and decided I had two options:

First, there was Option 1, codenamed “Guerilla Warfare.” I would enter the store and immediately start snapping pictures and then play dumb the moment the employees shut me down (“My bad, I didn’t know I couldn’t take pictures, sorry!”).

Option 2, codenamed “Smooth Operator,” would require better timing and more finesse than Option 1. I would enter the store, introduce myself, make nice, and then charm my way into being allowed to take a few snapshots. I’ve pulled this one off many times before; it’s harder work, but when executed correctly can pay off in the end. You know the drill: you get more bees with honey.

For this mission, I chose Option 2. El Hub double parked the getaway car in front of the store, we said our goodbyes, and off I went.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out the way I’d hoped it would. After being told three times that I couldn’t take any display pics, I took out my trusty camera and shot hella pictures of the display when nobody was watching, ha!

When I asked if I could swatch the products, I got shut down yet again. Undeterred, I meticulously applied color swatches to my arm. I could tell a few of the makeup artists were on to me. “I just want to see what the colors look like against my skin tone,” I replied with a smile. “Aren’t those Paint Pots to die for?”

After I finished swatching the entire Fafi line (with the exception of the nail polishes) onto my left arm, I waited until all of the makeup artists were busy with customers, and then calmly walked out the front door.

Outside, I spotted El Hub behind the wheel of the getaway car and booked it!

mac-cosmetics-swatched-arm-getaway-car.jpg

mac-fafi-crazy-swatched-up-arm.jpg

Without further ado (drumroll, please!), below are the forbidden Fafi swatches.

The pics are kinda ghetto, I know. The James Bond-like conditions weren’t ideal, but I did the best I could!

MAC Fafi Paint Pots from left to right ($16.50 each): Cash Flow, Perky, Layin’ Low, Girl Friendly, Nice Vice, Rollickin’

MAC Fafi Eyeshadow Quads from left to right ($36): Fafi Eyes 1, Fafi Eyes 2

MAC Fafi Lipglasses from left to right ($14): Squeeze It, Sugar Trance, Cult Fave, Totally It
mac-cosemtics-fafi-lipglasses.jpg

MAC Fafi Powder Blush from left to right ($17.50): Fashion Frenzy, Hipness
MAC Fafi Iridescent Powders from left to right ($21): Verve-Acious, Sassed Up, Belightful

MAC Fafi Lipsticks left to right ($14): High Top, Strawbaby, Not So Innocent, Flash-n-Dash, Fun ‘N’ Sexy, Utterly Frivolous
mac-cosmetics-fafi-lipsticks-final.jpg

Ahhhh, yes, MAC Fafi. The things I do for love…

The MAC Cosmetics Fafi Collection drops February 13th, so check your MAC Counter or your favorite free standing store. Just don’t tell them you’ve got a camera on you, yo!

Paint it Pink, Paint it Black: When Love Leaves You Twisted

February 7th, 2008 by Karen 25 Comments

The past few Paint it Pink, Paint it Black posts have either celebrated the joy or treated the pain of Valentine’s Day, but in life things are rarely that simple. Love can be about extremes — hot passion, cold shoulders, opposites attracting — but it can also be about compromise, sacrifice and shades of gray. Several times in my life I’ve felt a mix of both joy and sadness on the Big V. Truth be told, sometimes you’re caught in the middle! And when you are, you’re painting it pink AND black.

Case in point: several years ago, I wandered into a bookstore a few days before Valentine’s Day to buy myself a pen. At the time, I was fresh out of a long, emotionally draining relationship, and I was angry and very, very sad. Wandering through the store, I managed to end up in the Valentine’s Day card aisle. Hello, emotional breakdown!

I stood there, staring at the beautiful cards with their messages of love, clutching my pen with a death grip. Good thing I was alone in the aisle because I might have stabbed some poor unsuspecting loverboy/girl right then and there. I was just about to start bawling in the aisle when I spotted a card with a picture of a rabbit princess on it (complete with crown and ball room gown) dancing with a frog prince in a joyful scene. Inside the card was one simple line: “I had to kiss a lot of frogs before I met my prince.” It was the most perfect Valentine’s Day card ever, and I didn’t have anyone to give it to.

But I bought it anyway because at that moment I realized that someday I would find someone worthy of receiving it. Even though my heart was filled with sadness, I still felt hope for the future; I was painting it pink AND black that year, yo.

I waited a long time to give that card away — 10 years, as a matter of fact. I finally gave it away last February, the first Valentine’s Day that El Hub and I shared together as man and wife.

This Paint it Pink, Paint it Black post is for my girls who are in the middle this year, painting it both pink and black. Hold on to your hope, baby! It does get better.

If you’re feeling both pink and black this year, get thee to the Lancome counter and treat yourself to a gift that keeps giving way past Valentine’s Day — the Color Design Artist Palette in Stylish Neutrals.

lancome-stylish-neutrals-1-1-1.jpg

When I first opened it, this palette took my breath away. It includes eight beautiful matte and shimmer finish shadows:

  • light pink shimmer
  • bubble gum pink matte
  • mauve shimmer
  • taupe shimmer
  • burgundy matte
  • light stone gray shimmer
  • white shimmer
  • black shimmer

It’s the best shadow kit I’ve seen in a while. Lancome and MAC shadows have similar textures and color payoff, which is probably why I like ’em so much. All of these colors work with my skin tone, and I like that you can combine them to create so many different looks!

So far I’ve already tried these three…

Easy work eye:
Apply the mauve or taupe shadow onto the lid. Concentrate most of the color there, and then slowly fade up into the crease. Curl your lashes, and add two coats of mascara. You’re good to go!

Easy date night eye:
Cover the lid with the pink shimmer shadow, and add definition to the crease with the taupe. Wet a liner brush and apply a thin line of the dark burgundy to the upper lash liner. Finally, curl your lashes and add mascara.

Easy smokey eye:
Rim the upper and lower lashlines with black kohl liner. Then, smudge it with a pencil brush. Apply black shadow or burgundy shadow on top of the liner and blend. Then, apply mauve or taupe shadow on top of the darker color and blend them both together.

The entire palette is $70, which seems expensive at first glance, but it’s really a pretty good deal. Each eyeshadow pan in the palette is about the same size as a $14 MAC shadow, so if you purchased eight similar MAC shadows, a palette purchased that way would cost you $112.

Whatever condition your heart is in this month (broken, mending, fully functional and filled with love to spare), I’m sure it’ll beat a lil’ brighter when you see this palette.

Karen

Kiehl’s Spiced Plum Lotion Is Good Enough to Eat

February 6th, 2008 by Karen 34 Comments

Food-scented lotions don’t always do a lot for my soul. When I slapped a layer of Kiehl’s Spiced Plum Hand and Body Lotion ($19.50) on my arms the other day, I didn’t expect it to make me want to gnaw them off an half hour later. But that it did.

kiehls-spiced-plum.jpg

This lightweight, limited-edition (non-edible) lotion smells like a mix of brown sugar, cinnamon and homemade plum tart. The scent isn’t overly sweet, which is totally key for me. Some foody lotions, like those that smell doughy, can make me nauseous, and I think vanilla scent is used far too often. I don’t like to cruise around smelling like a Rice Krispy treat, ya know? Spiced Plum’s subtle notes blend with its sweeter tones, creating a perfect balance between naughty and nice. Yummy!

If you’re used to Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream’s moisturizing power, this might not be moisturizing enough for you. On my extra-scaly parts (legs and arms), it works reasonably well — a not as great as 8-Hour but better than Vaseline Intensive Care. I like that it isn’t greasy and doesn’t take a lot of effort to work into my skin; that’s very appealing to my slap-it-on-and-get-ready-to-boogie side.

I wore Spiced Plum while writing this entry, by the way, and because of the smell had to refrain from nibbling on my arm, yo!

How ’bout you? Do you like to smell like food (hey, at least it’s calorie-free!)? Or do you prefer your baked goods on a plate?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
