Sarah Moon for NARS Holiday 2016: The Mind Game Velvet Lip Glide Coffret

October 7th, 2016 by Karen 13 Comments

Welcome to the Dark Side! — and by “Dark Side,” I don’t mean Darth Vader’s neck of the woods. I’m talking about the $45 NARS Mind Game Velvet Lip Glide set (a Sephora exclusive, coming November 1st), one of several NARS sets in the Sarah Moon Holiday 2016 Collection.

It comes with six mini Lip Glides, and I’ve talked about the Lip Glides before.

Basically…I think they’re awesome.

They’re liquid lipsticks that feel like glosses, but unlike your typical liquid lipsticks, they’re comfortable. They also shouldn’t make your lips dry or make them look like a cat butt after a few hours. They stay nice and creamy, but they aren’t so malleable that they end up all over your face. I think they’re lovely and really great.

These have the same light vanilla flavor and scent as the ones in the permanent line and the same flat doe-foot applicator, which comes in really handy with the dark colors.

These aren’t high maintenance to wear or apply, and you can get nice, crisp, clean lines with the doe foot. A lip pencil or lip brush isn’t necessary.

Smoky Eyes and Red Lips: The Sarah Moon for NARS Holiday 2016 Collection

October 6th, 2016 by Karen 23 Comments

nars sarah moon rouge indescret
Wearing the new Sarah Moon for NARS Holiday 2016 Collection on my eyes, cheeks and lips (the lip is Rouge Indiscret)

This is the first NARS holiday collection in a very long time where — I know this is going to sound strange, but where I haven’t felt threatened or scared.

I know that’s weird, but think about it. Last year there was a kit with leather-clad man junk on the front.

You get an official Cool Kids card if you actually knew who Sarah Moon is, because I had no idea. I had to Google her, and she seems like a cool chick. She’s a French fashion photographer, and I mean, when you put those words together, “French” and “fashion photographer,” inevitably you get something cool.

From what I’ve seen of her work, there’s often a woman in her photographs who looks like she’s from another time, like the 1920s, and many of them are black and white. It looks like she uses filters to make things look old and kind of scratched up. They’re like pictures you’d find in your aunty’s basement of her in scandalous clothing from the ’20s.

Well, do I think that a 1920s screen starlet would wear this makeup?

Answer: Yes, I can see the ladies in Sarah Moon’s photographs reaching for these eyeshadows and lipsticks.

These pieces here are from the color collection, which is part of the larger Sarah Moon NARS holiday launch. There are also a bunch of sets, which we’ll get into later, but for now, here are the eyeshadows, the blushes, the lipsticks, the liners and the false lashes.

There are also three nail polishes (Never Tamed, Flon Flons and La Dame En Noir) which aren’t shown here.

Sarah Moon for NARS

Everything is limited edition, as you can tell from the packaging, and can we please just take a moment to appreciate the negative space in the serif lettering? As a font/typography person, I think it’s awesome.

Now let’s take a closer look at the blushes…

Impudique Blush ($30)

nars sarah moon impudique
Impudique Blush ($30)

WHAT IS IT? Pigmented pinkish red Impudique Blush is one of two limited edition powder blushes in the collection, and I can see a little bit of pearl in it from some angles.

SHOULD YOU GET IT? Only if you want to wear the same color for the next 40 years. It’s SO pigmented and would probably last that long. We’re talking crazy pigmented.

Get this one only if you feel confident about your blush blending skills. It’s a little like winged liner in that it can sense your fear… If you aren’t careful, you’ll end up with two little dolly red circles on your cheeks.

Isadora Blush ($30)

nars sarah moon isadora
Isadora Blush ($30)

WHAT IS IT? Isadora is the other blush in the collection. It’s a pearlescent lavender pink, and it’s also limited edition.

SHOULD YOU GET IT? Well, yeah, obviously. Not every blush in the world needs to be a dainty golden peach or pinkish brown. You might think that a lavender blush would be hard to wear, but it’s not. This one’s more of a pink tinged with lavender, so you get that rosy, happy, like, “Oh! You can’t catch me!” look to your cheeks.

Moon Matte Lipstick in Indecent Proposal ($28)

nars sarah moon Indecent proposal
Moon Matte Lipstick in Indecent Proposal ($28)

WHAT IS IT? Moon Matte Lipstick in Indecent Proposal is a matte nude rose with a lightweight texture and comes in a slim case, which you can just tuck away into your pocket for touchups.

SHOULD YOU GET IT? Well, how many nude lipsticks do you have in your bag? Do you have zero? If I go in there, and I don’t find anything at all, I’d say, “hey, go for it,” but if I walk over to your bag right now and 20 nude lipsticks come pouring out, I don’t think you need one more.

Moon Matte Lipstick in Rouge Improbable ($28)

nars sarah moon rouge improbable
Moon Matte Lipstick in Rouge Improbable ($28)

WHAT IS IT? Blood red Rouge Improbable closely resembles Rouge Indiscret but is slightly warmer and brighter.

SHOULD YOU GET IT? Well, you know I love a good red. You and I could sit here and easily paint you for days with all of the different reds that I love, but these red lipsticks, I have to be honest, the subtlety among them… I don’t think most people will be able to see the differences. If you swatch them all together on the back of your hand, I don’t think you’d see the differences unless you looked really, really, really closely.

Not to sound morbid, but Rouge Improbable does look very much like blood to me. Like dried blood. Like sexy vampire blood.

I’m not saying at all that I don’t like it. I think it’s a classic red that you could wear with everything, but is it a red that’s going to stop traffic and haunt you at night? I don’t think so.

Moon Matte Lipstick in Fearless Red ($28)

nars sarah moon fearless red
Moon Matte Lipstick in Fearless Red ($28)

WHAT IS IT? Fearless Red is the next of the three matte red lipsticks in the collection. It’s the one with the most brown. Technically, it’s a fire brick red, but I would call it more of a ’90s red because of the brown.

SHOULD YOU GET IT? Sure, if you want to take a trip back to 1998 with me.

Hey, that was a good era, with the dark matte lips and all the variations on brown. Of course, this one isn’t a pure brown. It’s mostly red with a tinge of brown.

You know the whole reddish brown on eyelids movement right now, especially in the crease? Well, this would look great paired with one of those shades, especially if you did matte eyes and matte lips.

Ah… Take me back to the ’90s please.

Of course, with matte lipsticks, you have to be very picky, because when mattes go wrong, they GO WRONG, but formula-wise, I think these Moon Mattes are right in all the right ways. They’re smooth across the board, so if you don’t want to put in a lot of time and you just don’t want any matte trouble, these are some of the easiest around to work with.

Moon Matte Lipstick in Rouge Indiscret ($28)

nars sarah moon rouge indiscret
Moon Matte Lipstick in Rouge Indiscret ($28)

WHAT IS IT? This ruby red is Rouge Improbable’s kissing cousin. It’s slightly bluer and cooler toned.

SHOULD YOU GET IT? Only if you don’t plan to get one of the other reds because…they do look very similar, but I think this one’s the peppiest of the three.

And here’s something fun: The blue undertone should also make your teeth look whiter.

The Hookup: Bite Beauty Papaya and NARS Dolce Vita

October 4th, 2016 by Karen 21 Comments

bite beauty papaya nars dolce vita
Magic happens when you wear Bite Beauty Multistick in Papaya and NARS Blush in Dolce Vita together

I’m thinking about starting a series on the blog called “The Hookup…”

No, it does not sound nasty! 🙂 It’s not like nasty Hollywood hookups, although it does freak me out a little when I hear teenagers say the word “hookup.”

The idea is product pairings for things that I like to wear together, because I figure, there are so many products out there, and it’s not always easy to find stuff that looks good together.

In the look I’m wearing here, I’m using Bite Beauty Multistick in Papaya, which you can use as an eyeshadow, blush and a lipstick, and I’m wearing it as both a blush and a lipstick.

I’ve paired it with NARS Dolce Vita blush, which is one of my favorite NARS blushes of all time. In fact, I think it was the first (or the second?) NARS blush I ever bought, but don’t quote me on that.

Anyway, both have rosy tones, but Dolce Vita has a little more gold in it, and I think it goes great with Papaya.

You could wear it as a blush and use Papaya as a lipstick, or use Papaya as a cream blush and apply Dolce Vita on top, which is how I’m using it here.

I love this combo, and I think it’s really pretty with neutral eyes.

When a Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words, or How I Really Feel About Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Vinyl LipColor in Controversial

October 4th, 2016 by Karen 10 Comments

estee lauder controversial
Praising the heavens above for Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Vinyl LipColor in Controversial (and praying that I don’t have food in my teeth, OMG!)

Believe it or not, but this color I’m wearing on my lips is from Estée Lauder.

Yeah! Who knew? I didn’t know they could do video chick cool like this, but this one is from a new line of glosses called the Pure Color Envy Vinyl LipColors, which are a little like lipsticks and a little like gloss.

There are only a few shades ($32 each), and all of them are bright, so no nudes. This one’s called Controversial.

I dunno… Maybe it’s controversial because it’s Estée Lauder? Because whenever I think of the brand, I think of pretty reserved makeup, but over the past couple years, though, they’ve done some hip stuff, and they’ve done it really well. They have some edgy, cool stuff if you kind of dig in.

Dang, this color reminds me of patent-leather shoes, which might be why I like it, because I used to have a pair of patent-leather shoes that were the same color.

I wish I knew what happened to them…

The formula’s pretty thick and sticky, but not annoyingly sticky. It’s comfortable, and just sticky enough to stay on your lips, although I wouldn’t wear it if I were going to be on Connor duty — like, there’s no way if I was wearing her in her baby carrier in front and kissing her forehead, because it would be a mess and get all over her hair and her skin and her clothes.

But if I were going to a Who Loves the ’90s concert with a friend? — then it would be totally wearable.

And don’t even go there! Of course you can wear brights. Don’t be crazy like that. Everyone can wear brights. 🙂 This one doesn’t even need a lip pencil. I just use the doe-foot applicator, and it’s not even hard. I would tell you if it were hard. The formula’s thick, which is key.

PRICE: $32
AVAILABILITY: Available now from Estée Lauder (I’m not sure if it’s LE or permanent)

Soap & Glory Righteous Butter Diamond Edition

September 29th, 2016 by Karen 8 Comments

soap glory righteous butter
The new Soap & Glory Righteous Butter Diamond Edition

I just rubbed a whole glob of Soap & Glory’s Diamond Edition Righteous Butter lotion on my limbs, and now there’s so much silver glitter on me that I look ready to rave circa 1995.

Just add glow sticks and platforms.

The Diamond Edition is more or less like the regular Righteous Butter, except with lots of silver glitter. It has the same sweet white floral fragrance (reminds me of the old Dior Miss Cherie, which I loved), and it’s just as moisturizing, too.

But the glitter! Duuude, there’s a ton! I can’t decide whether it’s more cheesy or Victoria’s Secret runway…

Whatever, I’ll still rock it. 🙂

I can’t seem to find it anywhere online here in the U.S. yet, so I’m not sure when it’ll be widely available, but keep an eye out for that sparkly silver glitter if you’re a Righteous Butter fan.

PRICE: $15 for a huge 10.1-oz. jar.
AVAILABILITY: Coming soon to Soap & Glory counters

LORAC Mega Pro Palette 3: An Emoji Review ?

September 28th, 2016 by Karen 25 Comments

lorac-mega pro 3 palette swatches
Wearing the new LORAC Mega Pro 3 Palette on my lids

Who was the genius who decided that this needed to be white?

I mean, I had it open for about two seconds before there was eyeshadow all over the packaging, all over the inside of it, the outside of it, all over me. I don’t even know. It was a mess!

lorac-mega pro 3 palette swatches
Believe it or not, this was taken after I tried to clean the palette, OMG!

I really like it, though. There are so many colors, and it has this rose gold theme, which feels kinda 2013, but eh — I’ll go with it. I think the best things, by far, are the first two rows. They’re all mattes! (All matte errrthing.) And these mattes are just so freaking juicy, soft and super easy to blend.

This whole grunge thing happening on my lids? (Well, I’m also wearing a couple shimmers. Let me just throw that out there.) I did it in like 10 minutes.

Maybe instead of writing the rest of this review, I’ll just use emojis, since that’s where we’re headed anyway. Why even bother with the English language? Just use emojis. That’s how Connor will probably communicate with me in the future anyway. Might as well get a jump on it. 🙂

When a Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words, or How I Really Feel About Hourglass Incandescent Electra Blush

September 28th, 2016 by Karen 31 Comments

hourglass incandescent electra
Living for the Hourglass Ambient Blush in Incandescent Electra (I’m wearing it on my cheeks!)

It’s expensive, but it’s so good. Even though Hourglass has really expensive products, especially the blushes, the powder products? — oh, my gosh. Basically, my nightmare scenario with blush is that I go outside and I’m wearing two little circles on my cheeks, but with this blush, that never happens. I can put it on with one foot out the door, and it looks great. You could be falling out of a plane while putting on blush, and you’d land, and your cheeks would look legit.

PRICE: $38
AVAILABILITY: Available now in the Hourglass permanent line

P.S. Well, basically my whole life has been a lie. I found out yesterday that NASA says that the sky has essentially shifted, and so all of the zodiac signs are a little different. Plus, there’s a thirteenth zodiac sign now, and apparently I’m no longer a Gemini, at least according to NASA. I’m a Taurus.

I can’t even deal… I just can’t.

Smell This ASAP: New McQueen Eau De Parfum

September 27th, 2016 by Karen 24 Comments

mcqueen eau de parfum

The whole idea of fragrance commercials on TV is totally weird.

Isn’t it?

Companies desperately trying to get us interested in a scent through a medium where we can’t actually smell the perfume. There we are just eating our morning oatmeal while a supermodel rolls around on a beach for 30 seconds whispering about “Seduction happens on the sand…”

I guess it’s supposed to be metaphorical, you know, to capture the essence of what it feels like to wear the scent, and maybe then we’ll stop by the fragrance counter on our next trip to a department store, but I dunno…

It’s kind of like what’s happening with this blog post right now. 🙂

I suppose that I could just list the fragrance notes in this $115 bottle of McQueen Eau de Parfum, the pricey new fragrance by fancy fashion house Alexander McQueen (night-blooming flowers, sambac jasmine, tuberose and ylang ylang).

That would probably be more useful than these pictures…
