Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 297

Tabs for Purina Pro Plan

Tabs for Purina Pro Plan

Who is Tabs the Cat?
About seven years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model). -Karen

Dear friends, fans and foodies,

Yes, foodies. As you know, I have many opportunities to sample fine feline cuisine at notable five-star feline friendly restaurants around the world. It’s one of the perks of being a world-renowned kitty supermodel.

And as much as I love a purr-fectly prepared chef’s tasting menu, there’s really nothing quite like enjoying a good meal in the comfort of my home.

On those rare occasions when I do get a bit of downtime, I call on my in-house kitchen staff to prepare my meals. As you can tell by my physique, I love to eat; however, I am not one of those cats who will simply eat anything you put in front of him. I insist that my personal chef only fixes fare that excites my taste buds!

To that end, I typically stick to three-course meals.

I usually like to start with an appetizer — a few treats to warm up my palette — and lately I’ve been loving these Purina Pro Plan Savory Bites. I’ve had the chicken, salmon and the tuna, and all three are delish (but my favorite is the chicken).

Step Out This Spring in a Pair of Wedges

April 15th, 2014 by Karen 16 Comments

This post is sponsored by Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse, and it’s all about spring wedges! For information about my posting policy, please see my Disclaimer.

After a blustery winter spent burrito’d in cat lady socks and knee-high boots, my feet are ready for warm weather. Woo-hoo, sandal season! Here we come!

Winter footwear is fun and all, but I’m partial to spring and summer because 1) I get to show off my pedicures (#priorities) and 2) I can finally wear wedges. 🙂

Yeah, I’m a bit of a shoe hoarder… Wedges, preferably platforms with a good cork heel (I’m only 5’1″, so I like the height), are some of my favorite shoes this time of year.

For high heels, they’re surprisingly comfy. Like, I know that I could spend a day walking around San Francisco in wedges, no problem, but I couldn’t imagine doing it in stilettos.

Plus, if/when it starts drizzling or a heavy fog rolls in (summers in SF can be COLD!) and I’m wearing cork wedges, they’re naturally waterproof.

In spring and summer, you’ll pretty much find me in a pair of wedges every single day. No matter what I have lined up, it’s not hard to find a pair that works with whatever outfit I’m wearing.

When I have a work meeting in the city, I’ll often don a colorful dress and cardigan, and slip a tan pair like these Franco Sarto Sherry wedges ($59.99) on my feet.

Being neutral, I don’t think they aren’t too flashy for a business meeting, but the detailing, in this case the crossed straps, dresses them up a little while giving them some personality.

On weekends, that’s when my fun wedges come out to play. I might put on that same colorful dress, but make a few little changes to the ensemble to take it from work to play.

Or Sunday brunch, which is one of my favorite things!

I’ll just swap out the cardigan for a vintage denim jacket, the bib necklace for a pair of dangly earrings, and the nude wedges for something spunkier, like these navy blue Yvonne wedges by Jellypop ($39.99).

The New Clinique StoryChangers Program: My Smile Lines Tell the Story of My Life…and So Far It’s a Pretty Good Story

March 21st, 2014 by Karen 24 Comments

This post is sponsored by Clinique and the new StoryChangers program. “We Are Story Changers. Watch and read stories from women like you who prove that when you change your story, you change your outlook.” For information about my posting policy, please see my Disclaimer.

I was looking through some old pictures the other day when I came across one of me and my best friend, Jen, on the day we graduated from high school (20 years ago!).

In the pic, we’re standing in my living room in our graduation caps and gowns, all excited and hopeful, and truth be told a little clueless, LOL!

karen high school yikes 2

Of course I had to snap a pic with my phone (I feel like I’m always doing this, taking pics of other pics). I texted it to Jen with a note, “Recognize these two youngins?”

She wrote back, “WOW. Just look at our faces. We were babies.”

And yeah, I guess we were. Although at the time, I remember thinking that I was all grown up because I was off to college in a few months.

Little did I realize then the challenges ahead, and when I look at the pic now, at my smooth, unlined skin and my squishy baby-faced cheeks, I see a young girl who has no idea of the hills she’ll have to climb, the obstacles she’ll eventually conquer, the missteps she’ll make, and make again, and again, the wonderful people she’ll meet along the way and the lessons she’ll learn.

And when I look in the mirror now, these many years later, I see proof of those lessons in my lines.

Sure, my pores are more visible, and my under-eye area isn’t as bright as it once was (ah…to be 18 again and able to get away with not wearing under-eye concealer!), but those smile lines around my eyes that show up when I’m happy, and those lines that show up around my mouth when I’m laughing, are reminders of the good times I’ve had along the way.

We all have our stories to tell and our paths to take. The decisions we make — both big and small — chart the course of our lives, and the beauty of it is, we can change that course. It’s kind of powerful, really, if you think about it. I don’t know where I’d be now (maybe still working at a job I didn’t like) if I hadn’t listened to that nagging voice in my head seven years ago that kept bugging me to start a blog. I’m grateful I listened to it.

This idea that we have the power to change our own story is the backbone of Clinique’s new StoryChangers program, a new multimedia platform on Clinique.com with videos, stories and vlogs from bloggers (including yours truly!) that celebrate the different ways women change their own stories, while introducing Clinique’s line of Acne solution products.

Hopefully one of their stories inspires you (and maybe your skin, too!), one decision at a time.

Every day of my life, my skin is changing, and so am I. As are you. We can’t stop things from changing, but we can alter course along the way. 🙂

If you have any questions at all about Clinique Acne solutions and you want answers straight from the source, they have a live chat available on their website where you can talk to a Clinique consultant about a regimen that’s right for your needs.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

COVERGIRL Bombshell collection and Ulta gift card giveaway
Wearing products from the new COVERGIRL Bombshell Collection

You know how in every group of gal pals, each gal kinda has her own role? You’ve got the mother hen, the braniac, the tomboy, etc.

Me? I usually fall into the role of “the funny one,” or “the weirdo writer.”

I always thought it would’ve been fun to be the one all the boys flocked to, aka “the sexy one,” but alas, seduction was never my forte.

I seriously could not seduce my way out of a paper bag. (Remind me to tell you about the time I dove into the ocean without my glasses or contacts on and swam away from a cute guy…who ended up being El Hub.)

Even though I’m not a seductive siren by nature, I still think it’s fun to role-play, especially with makeup. It’s like stepping into someone else’s shoes for a while or playing a character for a day.

A few things from the new Covergirl Bombshell collection…

Enter COVERGIRL. This spring, COVERGIRL is channeling bombshell beauty with their vampy new Bombshell collection of cream shadows, liquid liners, mascaras, lipsticks and nail polishes in colors designed to tempt and seduce.

The products in this entry were provided by the manufacturer for consideration. For information about my posting policy, please see my Disclaimer.

Happy anniversary, Proctor & Gamble! You don’t look a day over 175. 🙂

This year Proctor & Gamble celebrates its 175th anniversary.

That’s a lotta makeup and beauty!

With brands like Covergirl, Olay and Pantene on their team, they’ve helped millions of men and women create some of the hottest beauty looks over 17 decades.

Gosh, I’ve used so many of their brands…

My mom always wore (and still wears) Olay moisturizers. Funny story — a couple years ago she called me from vacation in Hawaii just to tell me that she was really upset because the TSA confiscated her bottle of Olay moisturizer at the airport. The moment she and my dad landed, the first place they went was a grocery store, so that Mom could pick up another bottle.

Ha! That’s totally something I would do. Sometimes the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. 🙂

Covergirl’s perfume, Navy, was my jam back in high school, and I always kept a Covergirl Lipslick in my backpack.

Oh, and Pantene! One whiff of their shampoos and conditioners brings me back to my college days…

I bet you’ve got some memories with these brands, too.

The P&G Time Capsule!

Check out this video that showcases the major beauty trends over the decades in under 1.3 minutes. Fun!

This year, P&G beauty is celebrating both past and present beauty innovations with a time capsule, into which they’ll stow some of your favorite beauty products and other can’t-live-without 2013 items. The time capsule will then be locked away in the P&G vault to be opened 25 years from now in the year 2038.

Make your voice heard! Vote for which products you want to include in the time capsule on Proctor & Gamble’s Style United Facebook page now.

To kick off P&G’s 175th anniversary with a bang, I’ve partnered with them on a mid-week giveaway. Win, and you’ll take home this gift basket stuffed with P&G goodies from Herbal Essences, Aussie, Olay, Covergirl, Venus, Secret and Pantene. A $66.79 value.

One lucky winner will receive a Proctor & Gamble gift basked stocked with the following treats…

  • One (1) Aussie Sprunch Spray ($3.29)
  • One (1) Herbal Essences Shine Collection Shampoo ($4.29)
  • One (1) Herbal Essences Shine Collection Conditioner ($4.29)
  • One (1) Head & Shoulders Damage Rescue Shampoo ($4.99)
  • One (1) Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Strengthen and Smooth Finishing Crème ($4.99)
  • One (1) Olay Active Hydrating Beauty Fluid Lotion Original ($10.99)

  • One (1) Covergirl Cheekers Blush in Golden Pink ($3.99)
  • One (1) Covergirl Cheekers Blush in Natural Shimmer ($3.99)

To enter, leave a comment at the bottom of the post, a comment about anything at all, like, what trends you’d like to see added to the time capsule, or what must-have tech or beauty products you think should be added. Or, share your fondest memory of using one of the P&G beauty brands featured in the prize — Aussie, Herbal Essences, Head & Shoulders, Pantene, Covergirl, Secret, Gillette or Olay.

  • The deadline to enter is Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 11:59PM (PT).
  • Entrants must enter using a valid email address to win.
  • A maximum of one (1) entries per person within the comments at the bottom of this post.
  • Contest is open to individuals of the United States who have reached the age of majority according to their local laws (18 in the United States with these exceptions: Alabama and Nebraska, 19; Mississippi, 21).
  • Tabs and I (heretofore referred to as “T-Money and K-Dawg”) will select one (1) winner at random from the entries left in the comments at the bottom of this blog post.
  • The winner will be announced here within 48 hours of the deadline.

Pair It Up: Kick Your Summer Makeup Repertoire Into High Gear With Matching Lips and Tips

June 13th, 2013 by Karen 27 Comments

Five of summer’s must-have lip and tip combos

This summer inspiration is brought to you by Target. Find more fun and surprises all season long on Target’s #SummerUp Pinterest board.

Lounging languidly beside any pools this summer? Planning any barbecues at the beach? Don’t forget those all-important warm-weather essentials like your swimsuit, big floppy hat, sunscreen, cooler filled with drinks and snacks, and of course, your matching lips and tips. 🙂

Some among us may argue that those last two items aren’t summer fun essentials. Either way, I sure do love bright nails and lips this time of year, especially when they match!

Gotta get that quick burst of color from your fingers as you write your name in the sand, or blow kisses into your camera phone as you snap a quick selfie to send to your sweetie (“Wish you were here, boo!”).

I searched high and low for a few fun, affordable combinations to wear this summer and combed through countless contenders (a tough job, but someone had to do it) to come up with the following five trendsetting color combos.

You don’t have to pay Dolce & Gabbana prices to look fashionable and fab. These five lip and tip pairings are available now at Target stores and online at target.com.

Look 1: Fruit salad

L’OREAL Colour Riche Le Gloss in Peach Fuzz ($5.99) and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Fast Dry Nail Color in Lickety-Split Lime ($3.80); Xhilaration Neon Floppy Hat ($14.99)

This juicy combo with lime green nails and lush peach lips begs to be worn with umbrella drinks and on lazy days by the pool.

Look 2: Playful purple

Revlon Super Lustrous Gloss in Sugar Violet ($5.99) and COVERGIRL Outlast Saty Brilliant Glosstini in Purple Freeze ($2.99); Mossimo Purple Fedora ($14.99)

Nothing says “fun in the sun” quite like shiny purple tips and shimmery violet lips.

Look 3: Think hot pink

Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm in No. 1 Unique Pink ($16) and Pixi Nail Colour in Summer Pink ($8); Merona White Floppy Hat ($14.99)

Brighten Up: 3 Bold Summer Makeup Looks, Step-By-Step

May 24th, 2013 by Karen 63 Comments

Brighten your lids, your look and your summer days with these three bold summer makeup looks

This summer inspiration is brought to you by Target. Find more fun and surprises all season long on Target’s #SummerUp Pinterest board.

“No fear!”

I think we should make that our summer makeup motto… After all, it’s only makeup, right? Nothing to be afraid of (we can always wash it off).

And summer is a perfect time to shine. The longer days, the warmer nights, flip-flops and loose-fitting clothing.

Why be daunted by daring, dynamic duos and multidimensional eye looks? In the spirit of adventure! — let’s kick off the season and face our fears right now. 🙂

Flashes of teal, shimmery oceans of blues, gleaming golds and juicy pinks and corals crank up the heat and fun-factor in these three bright, bold makeup looks.

Everything I’m wearing on my eyes, cheeks and lips in these looks comes from Target, so it didn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Your beauty assignment today: nothing! And you will not be graded.

We only have one goal here: no fear! Just have fun.

Purple, Teal and Fuchsia

A look featuring purple lids, with shimmering teal on your lower lash lines, bronze cheeks and hot pink lips. This one’s for fearless felines unafraid of color. In other words, you.

  1. Begin by applying a shimmery beige cream shadow, like Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR Metal in Barely Branded ($6), all over your lids and along your lower lash lines.
  2. Next, sweep a matte brown eye shadow in a shade close to your natural skin tone into your crease. I ended up mixing two shades from the Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral Palette ($20) to create a custom color (just for the heck of it).
  3. Then, sweep a shimmery coral shadow just above your matte brown. If you’re stuck for ideas, try Pacifica’s Coral Sand from the company’s new Enlighten Eye Brightening Shadow Palette ($12). I’m lovin’ it so far.
  4. Pat a dark black matte shadow, like the black matte from Sonia Kashuk’s Eye on Neutral Palette, into the outer corners of your eyes, and then blend away any harsh lines you see.
  5. Blend a gray matte shadow directly on top of that to create a soft gradient of color by dragging the gray into the middle of your lids. I used Sonia Kashuk’s Eye on Neutral Palette again here. 🙂
  6. Now, wet a flat eye shadow brush with water or a makeup setting spray, and use it to pat a bright purple shadow in the center and at the inside of your lids (the side closer to your nose). Aim for blending the purple into the black and gray gradient from the previous two steps. I used Urchin, the purple shade from the Pacifica Enlighten Palette in step 3.
  7. Next, line your upper lash lines with a black gel liner, like L’Oreal’s Infallible Gel Lacquer Liner in Blackest Black ($7).
  8. Then line your lower water lines with a vibrant teal blue pencil, like Pixi No. 6 True Teal Endless Silky Eye Pen ($15).
  9. To intensify the effect, sweep a bright teal shadow along your lower lash lines. I like L’Oreal’s 24HR Infallible Eye Shadow in Endless Sea ($7) for this…
  10. Lift your brows a bit by drawing a line beneath them using a flesh-toned matte liner like Rimmel’s Scandal Eyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in 005 Nude ($5), and blend.
  11. Buff a beige shadow just beneath the arch of each brow to appear to lift them even more. I chose Skinnydip, a shimmery beige from the Pacifica Enlighten Shadow Palette.
  12. Finish your eyes with a couple coats of black mascara. I’m using COVERGIRL LashBlast Clump Crusher Mascara ($7) here.
  13. Now for your cheeks and lips! Blend a shimmery bronze blush, like Bronzed from Pacifica’s Radiant Shimmer Coconut Multiples Palette ($12), on the apples of your cheeks, and tie a ribbon around the entire look with a bright fuchsia gloss like Physicians’ Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Stain in Hot Pink ($9).
Cat lady says “meow!” to these white cat eye sunglasses, which are only $12 at Target

Blue, Teal and Pink

Mermaid eyes! A blue and teal gradient will dance across your lids like dolphins dancing across a beautiful blue lagoon, while coral and pink serenade your cheeks and lips.

  1. Begin by blending a shimmery peachy pink cream shadow like Pixi Lid Last Shadow Pen in Shell Sheen ($18) all over your lids.
  2. Next, darken the outer corners of your lids with a matte black shadow pencil. I used Rimmel’s Scandal Eyes Eye Shadow Stick in Blackmail ($5) here.
  3. Deepen your outer corners by patting a black eye shadow, like the black shade from Maybelline’s Eye Studio Palette in Sapphire Siren, directly on top of the black shadow pencil.
  4. Pat a shimmery blue in the center of your lids and at the inner corners, and then drag a small amount of it into your crease to connect the two areas.
  5. Then, creating a gradient with the blue from step 4, pat a shimmery bright teal in the center of your lids. I used a teal from Maybelline’s Sapphire Siren Palette.
  6. Soften the edges of the blue and teal on your lids by sweeping a matte brown shadow, like the lid shade from the ELF Beautiful Browns Flawless Eyeshadow quad ($2), into your crease.
  7. Now, give your brows a lift by lining the arches with a flesh-toned matte liner like Rimmel Scandal Eyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in 005 Nude ($5), and blend.
  8. Dust a beige on top of that, like the pearly base shade from ELF Beautiful Browns.
  9. Line your water lines with a black liner (can’t go wrong with L’Oreal’s $7 Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Black, a true black without any blue or green undertones), and give it some depth by lining the outer third of your lower lash lines with the same pencil.
  10. Line your lower lash lines with the same shimmery blue shadow you used on your lids (layering it directly on top of the black liner from the previous step).
  11. Make your eyes the focal point of the look by lining the inner corners along your lower lash lines with the teal shadow you used a moment ago on your lids.
  12. Coat your upper and lower lashes with a good black mascara like COVERGIRL LashBlast Clump Crusher Mascara ($7).
  13. Now, get cheeky by blending a bronzer just below your cheekbones for definition, and then buff a coral blush on the apples of each cheek for color. I used Sonia Kashuk’s Chic Luminosity Bronzer/Blush Duo in Glisten ($13).
  14. At this stage, I was going to say, “Don’t gloss over your lips,” but that’s exactly what we want. Slick a pink gloss like Sonia Kashuk’s Ultra Luxe Lip Gloss Prettiest Pink ($9) on your lips to wrap things up. 🙂
Mint green glasses! These are the Gelato Sunglasses in Mint ($12), available now at Target stores and target.com
