Try Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder for a Non-Powdery Powdered Face

May 21st, 2018 by Karen 19 Comments

Because I don’t particularly enjoy having my foundation and concealer move around my face like a team of synchronized Solid Gold Dancers, I wear powder. That said, I don’t like my face to look too powdered, if you know what I mean.

Apparently, I’m not the only one out there who likes a non-powdery face, because this new loose powder from Hourglass has already sold out a couple times on their website since it launched earlier this spring.

Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder ($46 for a 0.36-oz. jar of loose powder)

I really like it. I’ve had it in rotation for a few weeks with different bases and concealers on my combo skin, but I’d slow ya’ roll if you’re ultra oily, because it breaks up the foundation between my eyebrows, which is the oiliest area on my face, by the end of the day.

“The magic of Veil transformed into an ultra-refined loose powder designed to give skin a naturally flawless finish. This finely-milled, weightless powder is formulated with soft-focus light-reflecting particles to instantly blur imperfections and minimize the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles for effortlessly smooth skin. The translucent formula can be used on all skin tones for an invisible, natural skin finish.”

After eight (!) hours with Hourglass Veil atop Too Faced Peach Perfect Comfort Matte Foundation

I feel so bougie when I apply it with the $64 (!) dual-ended Veil Powder Brush, which is a joy to use, and I like that I can’t see a speck of the powder once it’s blended in.

Smaller-looking pores? Yes. Settling into fine lines? No. Flashback? Shockingly, no. Finally, a transparent powder that really should work for all skin tones. If you swear by MAC Mineralize Finish Natural, I think you’ll be feeling this, too.

P.S. A little goes a long way.

❤️❤️❤️❤️ 4 out of 5 hearts.

Did you know? Hourglass infused Veil with diamond ? powder, which is supposedly how it can reflect light without any flashback. Fancy!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I love this stuff! Yes it’s pricey as is the brush but they are both worth every penny. Now I can rotate this with my MAC Mineralize Powder Natural. Like the MAC it doesn’t settle into lines or look caked. I use it daily to set my makeup. Another great review, Karen. Thank you.

      Hi Jan,

I’m glad to find someone who loves this just as much as I do! What base are you using it with?

Oh my gosh so want, want, want this. I love Hourglass everything but it’s so expensive. It’s a knockout in Sephora reviews too, girls of all backgrounds love it.

Maybe get a sample next time you’re at Sephora? It’s pricey so you might want to take it for a test drive first.

I am that oily, which will (in this case) save me money.

Linda, thank goodness. I love the feel of the silicone slip in my products so I was happy to hear that they’re not really the devil, after all. 🙂 Very informative post!

I wanted to love this, but didn’t. It cakes weirdly on my nose and emphasizes any dry patches.

Bummer! Well, at least this way you’ll have more $ for other treats!

Hourglass always has beautiful finishes. I just haven’t had any luck with their products, sadly. 🙁 Btw, I love the Solid Gold Dancer reference.

I lived for that show back in the day! I used to dance along with the routines… Although now looking at this video I just realized that some of the moves were pretty scandalous!

I know! There was a girl in my class who was famous for the “Solid Gold Fart Fan” move at our HS dances. I know that’s a terrible nickname for it, but I’m sure you remember the move. It was always part of the opening or closing, iirc. Back to the camera, bum shaking and waving both hands back and forth behind said bum. Ah, 80s memories. 🙂

OH MY GOSH! I remember that move! And it always had to be done wearing a high-cut shiny leotard! LOL

That’s the one! HAHA! We will still occasionally pull that out to make one another laugh if we’re dancing somewhere. I think the youth of today will do that with the twerk when they are middle aged. 🙂

Sign of the times: I’m still not exactly sure what twerking is. LOL!

Speaking of dancing, I’m going for the first time in years (honestly I can’t remember the last time I went) on Saturday. There’s a hip hop night with a DJ playing music from the ’90s!

I got a sample pot of this and it was a total no go for me. Didn’t set anything and just left me looking somewhere between shiny and reflective. I guess it’s because the first ingredient is mica. Something in it also made my sensitive skin itchy and flaky.

Ahh, well! That’s just more lunch money for other beauty goodies then, yeah?

BTW, did you catch the royal wedding last weekend?

I wanted it really bad. I was afraid though, that it just wouldn’t hold my oil-slick at bay – I got the Too Faced Peach Powder, and I like it so far. I do adore, however their Mineral Veil Primer. I can usually only afford the small ones and they don’t go far — but oh, how beautifully it prepares the canvas. –On a totally different note- have any of you girls tried the Sephora 10 hour Foundation? I just recently picked up a bottle, I had some exchanges to make– and I’d read SO many great reviews on it, I thought for $20.00 what the heck? And I love it!!! I love the staying power, the finishes, the coverage (can be sheered out or worn full) it applies like a dream — I’m just really impressed with it all around. It’s another one of those Sephora’s hidden gems!!!
If you’re near a Sephora — grab a sample and see what you think, I simply love it!!!

      Hi Gina,

I haven’t tried it, but it sounds great! Sephora Collection has some solid face products. Try their Future Gel Serum concealer if you haven’t already.
