Oh! — Let Me Tell You How Dancing Went on Saturday Night

May 29th, 2018 by Karen 36 Comments

the triumvirate
The Triumvirate lives!!! That’s my friends Naaman, (a very sweaty!) me and Cindy.

GIRL, it took a tube of Icy Hot, two days and four naps for me to recover from going out dancing ? on Saturday night, but it was so worth it. We had a blast.

Mostly, the best fun occurred between 11 – 11:30, which was shortly before we “peaced out,” because the DJ at Public Works in SF’s Mission, which is where we went, saved the ’90s hits we know and love for late in the evening.

The theme of the night was hip-hop hits from 1979-1999, but the DJ was stuck in 1979 from about 9:30 to 11, at which point Black Sheep started playing, and Naaman, Cindy and I (formerly known as “The Triumvirate”) lost our minds. ?

That’s also about when I took the pic at the top, which is why I’m extra dewy in it. (There’s three gallons of sweat rolling down my face.)

Some of the best parts of nights like this are the unintentionally funny ones, ya know? Like, we were dancing right next to a big group of friends, and one of the people in the group was a very tall woman who was wielding a huge black leather bag that was stuffed to the gills with something, and whenever she would dance up behind one of us, the bag would strike. Repeatedly! It turned into a game of round-robin, with a different one of getting trapped by the bag and pummeled for a while before we would switch places. “OK, it’s someone else’s turn to get the crap beaten out of them by this bag for a few minutes, haha!”

The lipstick I’m wearing at the top is MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in Personal Statement (which, sadly, appears to have been discontinued, but if you want something similar, try Tailored to Tease), and I knew I made the right choice when Cindy, who isn’t a makeup person, watched me apply it, crinkled her nose and said, “It’s kinda florescent.”

And I was like, “That’s what I was going for. 🙂 ”

Oh, and please note how bright my under-eye situation is. I was actually really exhausted there because Connor was fussy the night before, and I didn’t sleep well, but Make Up For Ever HD to the rescue, baby.

Fun night! I hope we do it again, although I may need another six weeks or so for my muscles to fully repair, haha.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

      Hi Kellly,

It was fun and much needed! I’m gonna try to make more of an effort to do it more often.

      How was your weekend?

You three look like you are having THE BEST TIME!!! Is there anything better than getting the gang back together and just dancing like you’re 20 and nothing matters but the song that’s on? (Besides not waking up with bruises delivered by somebody’s 50 lb Bag of Holding…) So fun!
And yes, that lippie was absolutely the perfect choice.

Aww, thanks Suz! We had a blast. I can’t believe there was ever a time in our lives when we did that two, maybe three times a month. Craziness!

How was your weekend, by the way? What did you do?

I hope that this does turn into a more frequent thing for you guys – not just because it’s great fun and a well-deserved break from your beautiful but busy life, but because we also need more amazing pics of the Triumvirate! 😀

This weekend was pretty chill. We grilled, watched some movies, hung out with a couple friends, went on some long walks. Then when it was too icky (read hot and humid) to walk, mr. hubkin put up with my whining long enough to drag me to the gym so we could start swimming again. It’s been a few months but it went better than I expected – well enough that I went back today to do more! My deltoids are less happy about this, however…

A few weeks ago I went to a wedding and danced like the dork I am but rarely unleash upon the world, and dear god was I SORE the next (3) day(s)! So fun, but I gotta say that I am NOT a fan of this whole aging thing. Ah, how resilient youthful bodies are…

Aww, you’re so sweet. Don’t forget sweaty. “Sweaty pics of the Triumvirate.” LOL!

Sounds like you guys had a fun weekend. Ahh… I would’ve loved to have gotten in the pool, but once again I’ve lost our pool key. 🙁 What kind of strokes do you do? I’m pretty basic because I can only do freestyle; nothing fancy. Gets the job done though! Sometimes I just like to hang out in the deep end to work my legs. I think that’s fun, too.

Oh, and please let me know if you watched any good movies. I always feel like I’m forever searching for good stuff to watch. 🙂

So now I can’t get a mental picture of three old-timey Roman dudes immortalized in marble, complete with sweat beads (or would some lowly museum employee be tasked with misting the sculpture hourly to give that freshly bedewed look?), out of my head. The Sweaty Triumvirate. My Latin teacher never brought up this chapter in Caesar’s career…haha!

Freestyle all the way, and sloooowly at that! Clunky sidestroke, breaststroke and backstroke, and I can’t really keep those up for more than a couple lengths. Butterfly never made ANY sense at all to me – ended up feeling like passersby thought I was being attacked by a giant squid or something. Does Connor Claire enjoy the water like you? I’m amazed at how naturally some kiddos take to swimming!

Movietime was basically catching up on Marvel movies as homework prior to watching Avengers: Infinity War, and rewatching a couple episodes from the first season of Star Trek TNG. (Note to self, maybe don’t admit these things to normal humans?) Also, we recently watched a Netflix movie called Annihilation that was CRAY but also amazing to look at and with a largely female cast. Strange yet compelling!

Imagine the OG Triumvirate going clubbing in their stately robes… HAHA!

I’m amazed that you even attempted the butterfly, because a swim teacher tried to teach me once and everything about it made my body say NOPE! I would LOVE if Connor ended up being a water baby. Right now she’s cool with putting her feet in the water and splashing around and for now I’m happy with that, but hopefully she’ll want to go in because I got her the cutest dinosaur swimsuit. 🙂

My hubs would be super jelly of your movie marathon, by the way! I’m gonna have to find Annihilation on Netflix and maybe start it tonight. Out of sheer desperation I fired up the Baywatch remake last night with the Rock and I’m kinda regretting losing those precious few brain cells that I lost while watching it.

You know what’s funny? The DJ was playing slower hip hop hits in the beginning, and we were joking around that he did that so the 40+ peeps like us could warm up a little bit. My friend Naaman said he tried to get his legs to go double time in the beginning and they straight up refused, LOL!

How was your weekend? Did you read anything good? I’m about 3/4ths in to the murder mystery I started a couple weeks ago, Faithful Place.

Lol! That’s nice of the DJ to think of the older folks. 🙂

I had a very relaxing weekend. I read “The Girl Who Knew Too Much” by Amanda Quick and “Far From The Tree” by Robin Benway. The first one was a murder mystery that takes place in the 1930s. I think the second one was a YA novel about three siblings adopted to different families that find each other. That one made me tear up a couple of times!

I love a good murderer mystery. I’ll have to check out that book!

Putting that YA novel on my list ASAP! I’ll have to read it after Crazy Rich Asians (my next book). I’ve been putting it off for forever but want to read it before I watch the movie which comes out this summer. 🙂

You’ll appreciate this… While I was reading on the couch this weekend Tabs was sleeping next to my feet with his paw on my toes. Every time I’d move my foot, he’d reposition his paw back on my toes as if it say, “Woman, this is MY foot. HOW DARE YOU MOVE IT?”

Crazy Rich Asians is a fun read. Totally random, but I remember there being several descriptions of food in the book and it made me hungry! I’m looking forward to seeing the movie.

Tabs is such a sweetheart! Speaking of feets…Louis is a toe licker! I thought Ella was bad with her love of stinky shoes and socks, but Mr. Lou has taken it to another level! Lol I have to be careful because sometimes he’ll take a bite!

That’s what I hear! I’ve been putting it off for so long, but now that the movie is coming out I HAVE TO READ IT. Oh, the pressure. LOL! Hmm… Maybe I’ll make my mom and my brother read the book so we can all watch the movie and then grab dim sum afterwards. That might be fun.

Silly Louis and his love of toes, aww! Is he only about your toes, or does he love your hubby’s feet too?

          • Ruchita says

            May 29th, 2018 at 3:49 pm

He is an equal opportunity toe licker! Although I don’t think he’s gotten any guests that have come over. He’s such a sweetheart and so friendly. I can’t imagine life without him! I had zero plans of getting a fourth cat, but he’s so floofy and perfect. I suspect his old family abandoned him when they moved or dumped him in the neighborhood. I hate to think of the time he spent outside on his own, but I’m so glad he’s part of our family now.

Why are strays always the best kitties? I can’t imagine Tabs living on the streets without us to love him! It breaks my heart. Thank goodness Louis found a way to you. I bet he’s so, so happy. How are the other kitties handling their new roommate? I hope they’re treating him nicely.

          • Ruchita says

            May 29th, 2018 at 4:09 pm

I know! It makes me sad to think of any of my kitties out on the streets before I got them. Everyone is getting along nicely! Nina is not a big fan, but she usually ignores him unless he gets too close. What’s funny is that Mingus lets Louis lick his head. That’s about the closest any of the cats get to being affectionate with each other. I like their little bromance. 🙂

When El Hub and I talk about what we’d do with our lottery winnings (because really, it’s only a matter of time), one of the things on our list is to start a cat sanctuary for stray kitties. I wanna help them all!

Aww, poor Nina. Isn’t she a cuddlebug normally? I hope that in time she’ll warm up to him. And that’s super cute how Mingus — who I always perceived as an alpha — lets Louis get so close and cuddly.

          • Ruchita says

            May 29th, 2018 at 5:02 pm

Yes, doing something to help cats is something I would definitely do with my lottery winnings. I follow @kittenxlady on Instagram and she went to a cat sanctuary on Lanai. It looked amazing!

Nina loves her humans, but she isn’t crazy about another kitty getting in the way. Overall, she’s a sweetheart. Mingy has gotten very sweet and affectionate. If we’re petting Louis and saying sweet things, he walks right over to get in the middle of things. Unfortunately Mingy’s heart disease is causing him to slow down a bit and he’s a bit more sedentary now. Overall, he’s doing well given his condition.

I ended up rolling out with a foam roller. Have you ever tried one of ’em? They’re life changing!

P.S. You have to try the MAC liquid lipsticks if you haven’t already. They last a long time and don’t dry out my lips. 🙂

I only own three different rollers. A long foam one, a short foam one and one of the short, hollow nubbly ones. I spend a small amount of time almost every day rolling some part of my body in order to keep moving.
I want to invent a blanket that vibrates like my cat’s purrs. I swear I’d be a rich woman if I could figure this out. Sometimes when Nora crawls on top of me purring first thing in the morning because she wants to be fed, I don’t get up to feed her right away because her warmth and purring feel so darn good.
Hate the feel of liquid lipsticks going on. I’m old school, in the bullet or nothing at all.

Wow, you’re a foam rolling expert! It’s amazing what a difference even just 5 minutes makes. I love the loose-y goose-y feeling I get afterwards, especially in my hips.

If you had that blanket for sale I would buy it. I bet it would be great for naps. 🙂

Also, for muscle pain relief–Target makes a pain relief cream that works really well–it’s just the Target brand whatever that is–but it’s not an icy hot. It just contains an analgesic that soothes sores muscles without putting them through fire and ice. I personally hate that.

    Also, Aleve, lots of Aleve.

Ooo, please have Miss Connor model the dinosaur swimsuit sometime this summer! It sounds adorable! And of course no summer is complete without a poolside bikini modeling shoot with the one and only Tabs… (that should go over well, right? 😉 )

Also, I should let you know that some of the scenes in Annihilation are on the intense side – it doesn’t really fall in scary movie territory for me (it’s got more psychological drama going on), and since the premise wouldn’t be mistaken for real life, I wasn’t wigged out by it, but I recall that you can be sensitive to some situations in movies. So just sayin’, don’t feel bad if it needs to be switched off or fast-forwarded.

HAHA! Oh, I love it! You guys look like you’re having a blast! 🙂 Same kind of deal at our dance party. There was a couple that was spinning and twirling in a very enclosed space – that was full of other people dancing regularly! We did a lot of switching, too, but our comments were less patient than yours. My friend suggested Swing Dance spinning me into the lovebirds to send them flying like bowling pins. Don’t worry, we were just laughing about it – we wouldn’t actually assault people. 🙂 It does make you wonder what folks are thinking, though. They must notice that they’re banging into others. It’s quite rude. 🙂
