Saturday Surfing, February 3, 2024!

February 3rd, 2024 by Karen 10 Comments

Good morning! Happy Saturday. I found this beautiful piece of bark yesterday at work while I was walking around during a break in the storm. I love that the bark is so delicate and paper thin, and how the lichen looks like it’s blooming across the top. I love it when nature gifts us with these beautiful, tiny little presents, don’t you?

Did you have a good week? Mine was busy but not stressful, so the time went by fast. I got to help a lot of instructors get ready for their classes, and I stepped up to run point on a big project in our department. Oh, and I had lunch with my co-workers a couple times this week and got to know some people a little better. I’d say it was a good week!

Today I’m taking Connor shopping to buy some shoes and maybe a dress for her school’s father-daughter dance, which is next week. I’m also going to drag her to a few furniture places because I am determined to buy some accent chairs for the living room.

I’m specifically looking for two swivel chairs with a rounded shape that are relatively compact but comfortable. I found these online last night. What do you think?

Here’s the Morpho Swivel Armchir from Target.

And here’s the Sophie Upholstered Swivel Chair from World Market!

I don’t want to spend a ton of money on them because Connor’s so young and I anticipate the chairs eventually getting trashed by her and her friends; perhaps I’d buy another set in about five years or so.

To be honest, I’d rather spend more on higher quality chairs, but I also don’t want to be too precious about our furniture. I don’t know if it’s the right path to take because I really don’t want to buy more stuff that we just won’t keep, but I want to feel like our home is one we can actually live in.

Anywho! Let me know if you have any good ideas. I’d love to hear ’em.

Are you sure you want such a low back on the chairs? In my experience, people won’t use chairs that cause a backache, and short-backed chairs are more likely to. The dictum, “form follows function,” probably should apply more to chairs than just about anything else. Poorly-designed chairs are a pet peeve of mine, and always have been. I particularly hate typical American dining room chairs – they’re usually not padded enough, and while the backs are tall, they usually don’t have any padding on them at all. I can’t steer you toward any good chairs right now – though if you lived in Texas I would ask if you’d like the taller pale green swivel chairs left from my mother’s estate. They’re in good shape but haven’t been used much, mostly due to being in a “parlor” type front room in the house, that isn’t used much.

They chairs will be mostly for guests who are visiting for a little bit. Our main place to sit will be our couch!

That said, I went to the store to try the Sophie chair out and it was surprisingly comfortable.

Love Gina B’s Up 2 the BEat Fit channel. I do some of her warmups and cool downs. Haven’t done a full workout yet. I burned out on fitness in about 2018/2019. There have been so many starts and stops. So, I looked at what caused the burn out. Wrote out a new plan. I have been pretty constant since my restart in December. Will be adding this workout to my plan.

The link to the bond builders article doesn’t work for me.

Thanks for letting me know, Melody! I wonder what happened; it was live yesterday. Weird!

Karen: both are beautiful chairs. My preference would be the chair with the broad base as opposed to the spindle base – seems more sturdy, especially if kids are climbing on them. Although I agree with CL’s comment about the low back, concider how much time people will be sitting in them. We have had low back chairs for years with no complaints. However, the chairs in which we spend the most time are the recliners with high backs.

Congrats on a successful work week!

Oh, that’s a good call. I didn’t even think about the spindly chairs getting knocked over. I went to World Market to sit in the Sophie Swivel Chair (the cream option) and it was surprisingly comfortable!

I anticipate these chairs will be mostly for guests popping in for a short visit. 🙂

I like the look of the cream chairs better, but the color would give me pause since you can’t really wash those chairs easily. I also don’t think the boucle fabric holds up very well.

That said, I’d absolutely buy the cheaper furniture in this case. I have two boys (11, 13) and cats and dogs. I very much like a clean house, but I also don’t want to turn into a shrew yelling at everyone about furniture or food on the furniture. Our couch is ikea because you can remove the covers and machine wash easily. I do that every 3-4 months, and things have held up great for about 5 years now. Not sure what ikea has in terms of chairs, but it’s worth a look. The ability to wash those covers has been a game changer.

Also, if you plan to use those chairs much, you really need to sit in them and flop around a bit to check for comfort. Otherwise no one will actually use them if they aren’t comfy. Good luck!

Thanks, Tara! I went to the nearest World Market store to sit in the chairs and see them in person. They had the cream one out on the sales floor and you are absolutely right about the fabric not holding up well. The sherpa looked worn down and kinda gray and gross! The teal version, though, was absolutely beautiful, and very comfortable to sit in.

I would totally go to Ikea if it wasn’t so stressful for me. The last time I went, I nearly had a panic attack because of the way the store is laid out. It’s like a maze and there are no windows!

I couldn’t agree more about panic attacks and IKEA! Last time I went I felt so bad that an assistant showed me a secret way out hidden behind a curtain…

I would choose the blue chair – better fabric!

Here are two options from West Elm. A bit more expensive than Target. I’ve sat in them and can attest for the comfort. https://www.westelm.com/products/addie-swivel-armchair-h11785/?pkey=cliving-room-chairs
    https://www.westelm.com/products/cozy-swivel-chair-h3797/?pkey=cliving-room-chairs
I got one in the ink blue velvet for my girlfriend when she started her divorce proceedings and found a new place to live.
Very cozy. The only problem was West Elm kept extending the delivery date and it took F-O-R-E-V-E-R to get.
