Wearing Sunscreen During the Winter Months: Your Thoughts?

February 23rd, 2022 by Karen 14 Comments

Yay, sunscreen!

Do you usually wear sunscreen during the winter? I haven’t been super great about it for the past couple of years, but this winter I decided to commit because I’m tired of dealing with hyperpigmentation. I also started using a stronger retinol which has made me more sensitive to the sun, so I layer that stuff on, girl!

Lately, I’ve been loving Avene Solaire UV sunscreen. I’m actually on my fourth bottle! Yup, I love it that much (here’s hoping Avene never discontinues it).

I like mixing the tinted and non-tinted versions to create my own customized color. I apply the first layer, wait for it to dry, then I do a second layer. After that second layer sets, I apply makeup on top.

What are your thoughts on wearing sunscreen during the winter months? Are you good about wearing it, or do you skip it?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    Hi Karen,

I wear sunscreen every day, all seasons, to help minimize my hyperpigmentation as well. My favorites are moisturizing sunscreens such as Neogen’s or Ultra Violettes.

Hate, really hate all types of sunscreen. Makes my skin feel like it’s wrapped in plastic wrap. Tried every end of the spectrum…drugstore, Supergoop, and many others in-between. Use them a few times then throw right in the garbage. I look for SPF to be in my moisturizer or foundation. Those are tolerable probably because there are other emollients added. Now that the rant is over (thanks for indulging) because sunscreen would be in moisturizer/foundation it would be a year round item.

Every single day of my life regardless of season, cloudiness, temperature, whatever. And not only because I live in Brazil because I did the same when I lived in Germany. If the sun exists, sunscreen is a must.

I wear spf 365. My skin cannot tolerate chemical spf so I have found what works best for me is Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Defense Radiant Protective Veil. SPF 30, also protects against blue light and pollution. Provides some moisture and acts as a primer.

As a squamous carcinoma survivor, who spent three hours in an operating room having the tumor surgically removed, daily sunscreen is non-negotiable no matter the season.
I really love Shiseido’s sunblock and to a lesser extent Supergoop.
    Neutrogena isn’t bad either.
I’ve been robbed, I’ve been stalked and frankly those acts didn’t come close to the terror I experienced with skin cancer.

I have been wearing Alba Botanics SPF 45 Face Shield up until a few days ago. I am not certain, but my face has had a reaction to something i am using and I’m not sure if it is my sunscreen or moisturizer. I am doing the “process of elimination” thing and am thinking I may need to try a true physical sunscreen.

    Be well.

As a PPP (particularly pale person) I always wear sunscreen. I remember the days when the highest SPF was around a 6. Then it went up to SPF15 and I wore that and got teased for wearing “liquid shirt”. Then SPF30 then 45 and then 50. I had way too many sunburns when I was younger to not wear sunscreen every day.
I’m working hard, trying to get Dear Husband to wear SPF everyday. He’s like, “It’s cloudy out”. UV rays penetrate clouds. Sigh. Then he dots it on like he’s Gwyneth Paltrow. At least I have Dear Daughter trained.

As a ginger, I definitely wear sunscreen, even in winter. My skin is pretty dry I’m the winter so I pick something more moisturizing then. I usually go with a zinc formula because they don’t irritate my rosacea as much but man my winter sunscreen makes me look a bit like that picture of Mark Zuckerberg.

I wear sunscreen year round, but I live in South Florida, the sunshine state. My latest favorite is Sunprise by Etude House a K-Beauty brand. SPF-50.

I love colorescience sunscreens. Recently tried the Biossance sunscreen, very nice.

I am extremely fair. So sunscreen is a must year-round. I had a malignant skin cancer removed in my 20’s that left a very interesting scar above my left breast where they excised a lot of tissue (looks like a human bite mark) but it was an eye-opener and since that day I’ve worn at least SPF30 and I wear a hat when outdoors. All the years in the cockpit of an airliner didn’t help but I have a lot fewer wrinkles than a lot of pilot friends my age who never wore sunscreen.

I’m religious about it, year round. But I wish I’d started in my 20s instead of my 40s. 🙁

Each day every day it is for me and has been for a few years. Really helped with my pigmentation, and it has become second nature, like brushing my teeth, by now.
