Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Pretty Amazing Lip Collection and Afternoon Distractions

October 7th, 2011 by Karen 15 Comments

I don’t know if I’ll be watching American Horror Story again next week… Come to think of it, I wish I could un-see the series premiere. I’m sitting here at my desk in the middle of a perfectly fine afternoon, and I’m freaking the eff out!

I keep looking over my shoulder, half expecting to see this dude watching me from behind.

Safe place! Safe place!

The only thing keeping me sane right now is good old-fashioned distraction, and to that end I’ve been looking at pictures of kittens, devouring Kind Bars (Almond and Coconut, of course), and checking out a few kits from the new Bare Minerals bareEscentuals holiday 2011 collection, including this cutie patootie called the Pretty Amazing Lip Collection ($28).

Have you tried any of the Pretty Amazing Lip Colors yet? If you like long-wearing liquid lip products, this limited edition kit comes with four of ’em — little minis in both sheen and glossy finishes.

I plan to try a few looks with some of the many Bare Escentuals bareMinerals holiday kits next week, but for now, here’s a quick peek at the Pretty Amazing kit, along with some swatches. 🙂

See You at the Shore with NYX Haute Jersey Leopard Couture

October 7th, 2011 by Karen 30 Comments

I watched Jersey Shore last night.

THERE. I said it.

I couldn’t help myself, but as my mind decayed down that familiar path into mind-numbing mush, I still managed to marshal enough neurons together to snap pics of the NYX Haute Jersey Leopard Couture palette ($25, available now online).

Caught Ya

October 7th, 2011 by Karen 6 Comments

Snapped this five minutes ago. See the tiny bird in the center? That’s the hummingbird that hangs out in my front yard. Every time she comes to eat I never seem to have my camera, but luckily I had it with me when I took Tabs out for a walk this morning.

Happy Friday!

I’ve Fallen for the Fergie Fallen Boot

October 6th, 2011 by Karen 48 Comments

fergie fallen boots

Why, cruel world!? Why is it so much easier to gain the weight than it is to lose it?

Last month, as part of my latest quest to get healthier, I resorted to good old-fashioned bribery (whatever works, right?). I told myself that I could get a new pair of boots if I exercised at least 24 days during the month…

And I did it! 🙂

So, last weekend I stopped by the new Novato DSW to select my prize, and I walked away with this snazzy suede olive pair of, quite possibly, the greatest boots I’ve ever owned.

Oh, and here’s the kicker: they’re made by Fergie! — as in Fergilicious, her body stays vicious; she be up in the gym working on her fitness. Yes, THAT Fergie.

Okay, well, something tells me she probably didn’t make them herself, but I bet she had something to do with the design…

It’s actually kind of funny because I walked past these Fallen Wedge boots by Fergie ($139.95) a few times before finally reaching down to pick them up. “Fergie makes shoes?” I wondered. “I dunno if I’m ready for that…” I mean, I love her music and have run many, many miles listening to her songs, but the Fergie-footwear connection seemed like a stretch.

3 Tips for a Fabulous Face This Fall

October 6th, 2011 by Karen 67 Comments

This post is part of a series sponsored by Walgreens.

The leaves are falling! The leaves are falling! And, oh my — that brisk breeze that leaves cool kisses on your cheeks? Yep, it’s baaack.

Fall, that is. I actually like the idea of the seasons changing and the different colors everywhere and the leaves falling from the trees. But in practice, I just don’t like being anything but warm. 🙂

This “in-between” time is actually one of my favorite times of year. Not yet winter, and just barely into fall. Too bad I know it won’t last. Pretty soon we’ll be freezing our bums off! — but this time we’ll be prepared.

I’ve been conducting extensive “research” into knee-high boots…

…and fine tuning my skin care routine to prepare my face for the chilly days ahead.

To help you put your best face forward this fall, here are a few tips and products that won’t break the bank.

1. Change can be cleansing

Because those dry, biting winds that whip up in late fall always wreak havoc on my combination dry/oily skin, I like to replace my usual facial cleanser with something richer and more moisturizing. I recently started using and loving La Roche-Posay’s creamy Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser ($20). It gently cleanses the skin and removes my makeup (all but the longest-wearing and waterproof stuff), but more importantly, it leaves my face feeling hydrated and soft.

I’ve also heard good things about La Roche-Posay’s Physiological Cleansing Gel (also $20). I haven’t tried it yet, but like Toleriane it’s non-comedogenic and recommended for sensitive skin.

2. Exfoliation nation

Ahh, flakes. They’re not just for cereal anymore. Come fall and winter, I start seeing dry skin flakes on my cheeks and around my nose (not cute). A few months back I asked my dermatologist about it, and she recommended the Buf-Puf Facial Sponge (just $5). So old school, I know, but when used properly (be gentle; your skin is not a greasy frying pan!), it whisks away flakes and brightens dry, dull skin.
