Which of These MAC Me Over Lipglasses Came with Me to Lunch?

August 10th, 2011 by Karen 50 Comments

mac curvaceous lipglass

“I wonder if I’m burning enough calories to get a cupcake.” That’s the thought that kept going through my head in San Francisco this afternoon as I shivered on my way to and from a late work lunch. It was freezing in the city! And all I had on was a dress, a light jacket and sandals.

Not good.

It’s my own dang fault for forgetting how chilly SF can get in August… On my way home, I stopped by Neiman Marcus to warm my heart with new fall makeup, specifically a yummy Le Métier eyeshadow kaleidoscope kit with pretty purples and bronzes (I’ll post a pic soon).

Before I headed into the city, I tried on some of the Lipglasses from the upcoming MAC Me Over collection. These are $14.50 each ($17.50 CDN) and arrive on counter a little later this month.

I really like Curvaceous. That’s the one I wore to lunch today. I think it looks kinda cool-ish in the pic below, but it leans more toward neutral on my lips.

Take a look, and let me know what ya think. 🙂

MAC Me Over Because There’s Something Here for Everyone

August 10th, 2011 by Karen 57 Comments

mac me over

For my losing entry in the contest that eventually led to the upcoming MAC Me Over collection, I leaped into the sea from atop a giant rock in Oahu’s Waimea Bay while screaming, “MAC me over because I’m ready for a new adventure!” into a small waterproof video camera.

Actually…I was standing on an outcropping only about a foot off the water when I jumped. Oh, and I also flubbed my line. 🙂

I like to think of MAC’s fall release as the People’s Collection (raises fist!), but not because it was part of any underground revolutions. The collection’s imagery showcases dreamy before and after pics from the six men and women picked after last fall’s contest for the collection. In the contest, MAC fans submitted pictures and videos of themselves completing the phrase, “MAC me over because…”

From the submissions, MAC Creative Director James Gager picked the lucky winners. Pretty cool, yah?

The 51-piece collection is, in a word, MASSIVE! It launches August 25 here in North America and internationally this September with a bevy of brushes and limited edition and repromoted makeup for eyes, lips, face, cheeks and nails.

MAC divided the release into three sub-collections — Icelandic Cool (comprised of cool-toned shades), New Black (dark and bold colors) and MAC Basics (pink and nude shades hand-picked by MAC artists) — making it all fairly easy to navigate.

I swatched a few of what I thought were eye-catching items from each of the three sub-collections this morning. Holla at me if anything that gets you in the gut. 🙂

Nordstrom Gift with Purchase: Now Through Aug. 14, Get This Coral Case Crammed with Beauty Bits

August 10th, 2011 by Karen 26 Comments

It doesn’t take much arm twisting to get me to Nordstrom. Pretty much any excuse will do (“Since I’ll be in the area anyway…” “They have a great outdoor cafe,” “I still have that dress to return.”), but there’s always room for another one, like this sweet gift with purchase in the Cosmetics Department. Now through August 14, valid both in stores and online, it comes with everything shown in the pics above and below.

Spend $125 or more in makeup and/or fragrance and take home this orange cosmetic case filled with 12 deluxe-sized samples from Laura Mercier, Lancome, Kate Somerville, Philosophy, Caudalie, Trish McEvoy, Anastasia Bevery Hills, Clarins, Ahava, DKNY, Xen-Tan and the Nordstrom store brand.

My favorites of the bunch are the little Laura Mercier Lipstick in Sand Castle (closed it’s barely 2-inches tall!) and the itty-bitty bottle of DKNY PureEau de Parfum (that’s it in the pic at the top).

MAC Me Over Collection Lipstick Swatches Starring My Secret Lover (That’s What You Are)

mac me over lipstick swatches

Kiss me, you impetuous fool! But wait — let me apply my lipstick first. 🙂

Just some quick swatches of a few of the lipsticks from the upcoming MAC Me Over collection on NC42 lips/skin (arriving on North American counters Aug. 25; internationally this September).

I left Tabs with specific instructions to swatch and post anything MAC-related while I was gone, but because he’s a cat, he never listens to a word I say.

You know how it goes…

Be a Good Student of Travel Makeup with a Clear Pencil Case

August 9th, 2011 by Karen 18 Comments

A clear pencil case for travel makeup

Stop letting lost tubes of lipgloss languish at the bottom of your luggage on trips. Next time you travel, keep them and the rest of your makeup safe and sound (and organized) in a clear pencil case. With back-to-school season coming up, you might even be able to find them on sale. 🙂

I’d been using Urban Decay’s voluminous Quinceañera makeup bag to store my face paint on my last couple of trips because of how wonderfully cute and spacious it is (fits all of my foundation, eyeshadows, brushes AND the kitchen sink), but it was a little tricky locating specific products buried within the roomy bag.

I usually ended up just dumping the contents on the bed and sifting through the pile. Not a great system, and it was only matter of time before something rolled off the bed only to get accidentally left behind.

Enter the see-through zippered pencil case. It’s clear, so I can easily spot whatever I’m looking for, and it’s built for travel.

Well…it’s built for binders, but it works great for travel. 🙂

Dr. Scholl’s High Heel Inserts Are, Quite Literally, Hot

August 9th, 2011 by Karen 31 Comments

I trekked all over San Diego late last week and through the weekend in my current sandal crush, a pair of Franco Sarto black leather cork wedges I picked up last summer, and after the first day, my feet felt fine; by the end of the second day, however, my feet and I were beginning to feel a little ‘tow up.

I turned to a pair of Dr. Scholl’s High Heel Inserts (about $8) to restore the spring to my step. They’re basically an adhesive gel insert, like a cushioned sticker, that fit into high heels to hopefully make them more comfortable.

I’ve used something similar from Foot Petals called Killer Kushionz, and even though my inner word nerd flinches every time I see the way “Kushionz” is spelled, I love how comfy they are.

Of course, at $12.95 a pop, Kushionz are about 62% more expensive than the inserts from Dr. Scholl’s, a fact not lost on my bargain-lovin’ self. Add to that the cost of shipping, as I’m usually forced to order Kushionz online (I can’t always find them locally), and the difference is usually even greater than that. Meanwhile, the Dr. Scholl’s inserts are carried at most drugstores, and sometimes even at grocery stores like Safeway.
