Some Makeup Inspiration

September 3rd, 2021 by Karen 9 Comments

estee lauder 80s vibes
Some makeup inspiration

Earlier this week, I sat down to put on makeup and…after an awkwardly long pause and “Hmm…” realized I’m majorly lacking in inspiration. The proverbial makeup “well” hath runneth bone dry.

BONE. DRY.

My creativity needs a boost, so I found a stack of Allure mags and bookmarked a few looks, starting with the one in this Estée Lauder lipstick ad.

I’m getting a very ’80s vibe, and it’s working for me! The bold, glossy red statement lip; massive shoulder pads; the big jewelry. Sign me up!

I like:

  • The sheen on her inner lids
  • The strong liner on her upper lash line and the outer half of her lower lash line
  • Her Brooke Shields brows!

I also love the lack of heavy-handed bronzer and “highlights from space.”

Also, you might also notice that the model’s eye makeup isn’t perfectly symmetrical, and it’s interesting and refreshing to me that she isn’t Photoshopped into a completely symmetrical version of herself, since ultra-symmetrical eye makeup has dominated social media for so long. It’s cool, and I hope to see this more often.

This is a very dressy makeup look and probably not something I’d wear out and about right now, but I do love it. I still might try something similar just to wear around the house.

Next, up — the makeup in this Lancôme ad with a very “Hunger Games” Zendaya. I see you channeling Katniss Everdeen with your bow and arrow, girl!

“I volunteer as tribute!”

lancome zedaya mascara

And can we take a second to admire her brows? I’m really into bold-but-soft arches right now.

I also like the liner in this look. There’s a thin wisp of it on her lash lines. (I’m guessing it’s pencil?) See how the liner hugs her lower lash line tightly but doesn’t spill over onto her waterline? I think that’s just lovely. I also like how defined but not overly crisp it is. The edges are softened just a touch with some golden bronze eyeshadow.

lancome zedaya mascara closeup

I like her cheeks, too, with their barely-there hint of peachy tan bronzer and blush. There are subtle highlights on her upper cheek bone and underneath the arch of her brow, and I like how they’re blended. They don’t just look like shimmery stripes on her skin.

And then there’s her lip color, that nude pink with a little shine, to round out the look.

This whole thing is something I’d want to wear in everyday life!

This last look below is similar to my current makeup aesthetic — when I wear it, ha! — except for her brows. Hers are a little too bold for me, but everything else, I dig. I love the shine on her lids and the peek of color on the outer corner in the inner corner. Everything is blended so well and seamlessly, too! I’m guessing the artist went with creams.

glossy lid look allure

Love the fresh, dewy skin because it’s just shy of shiny. It also doesn’t look like she has much on her cheeks at all, and I’m loving that.

Also totally into her lipstick, which matches her gums! I think it looks so natural.

I hope some of these ideas inspire you like they’re inspiring me. I don’t know how it’s been for you lately, but whenever I put some makeup on, I feel like I’m wearing…a lot of makeup. Maybe I’ll want to wear a full face again someday, but with everything still going on, I’m nowhere close to that right now!

If you’d like to, please share what makeup you’re into these days. I’d love to hear about it.

Karen

Why Is It Hard to Say Goodbye to Old Makeup?

September 2nd, 2021 by Karen 13 Comments

Me looking at the all the totes in the dining room corner

Why is it so hard to say goodbye to old makeup? I’ve been thinking about this lately, in large part because all of the momentum I had while I was decluttering my stash last spring has ground to a halt. The Marie Kondo train I was happily riding — toot, toot! — has been going nowhere for months.

I’ve been stuck. Big time.

One thing that hasn’t helped was that I had to bring all of the products that were out in boxes in the garage back into my house, and UGH — it’s a long, dumb story concerning homeowner’s association parking rules, but the point is, I had to do it, and now everything’s stashed in a corner of my dining room.

Totes upon totes upon totes, but hey, at least I had the good sense to not bring it back into my office! 👍

I’m looking at the totes in the corner now and wondering why I haven’t touched them in months.

I think one reason is because I assumed that decluttering makeup would be on the same level as cleaning out my closet and saying goodbye to my pre-baby wardrobe, which was hard, but not impossible. Yes, it took a while, and it had many difficult emotional moments, but I got through it, and I felt great afterward.

the great makeup purge of 2021
To quote Boyz II Men, “It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.”

Here’s the thing, though: with clothes, you get immediate feedback if something doesn’t fit. For example, when I cleaned out my closet earlier this year, I could try on stuff and make an immediate decision. One time, I tried on a cute white jacket, and I couldn’t even get my arm through a sleeve, so it was easy to say, “OK, this clearly doesn’t fit me right now at this moment, so I’m happy to pass it on to someone who can fit into it and will appreciate it more.”

With makeup, it’s not always the same immediate feedback for me. I mean, yeah, there are the obvious times when I’ll open something up, and it’ll look weird or smell funny, and I’ll know right away that it’s going.

The further I’ve gotten into the purging process, the more challenging it has become to say goodbye.

Like, I’ll see a beautiful piece I’ve held onto for years and think to myself, “Oh, this is really pretty! I have to keep it.” Then I’ll do the math and realize I’ve had it for…way too long, and even though logically I know the item should still go, has to go, I can’t do it.

I have a tendency to 1) remember how I used to be in the past or 2) think about how I might be in the future, and when I’m surrounded by those compacts, lipsticks and palettes, I’m rarely ever in the present moment.

For example, I’ll have a blush in my hand, and so many memories of my 30-something self come flooding back. It was a time and place when I was kindasorta fabulous! I stomped-walked in high heels everywhere I went — yup, even at the airport, girl! My closet was bursting with quirky dresses and cute accessories, and I stumbled into all sorts of adventures. Most of the makeup currently sitting in the totes in my dining room is from that era.

And, on the opposite end of the spectrum, sometimes I’ll be holding the same blush and will start thinking about the future. I’ll wonder if I might need that blush someday and if I’ll regret letting it go.

What if, what if, what if.

I guess one lesson learned from this process is that I no longer want to be swinging back and forth between who I was in the past and where I might be in future. I just really, really want to be more present in the current moment. The now.

So, maybe that’s the push I’ll need. Maybe? I hope so.

I also try to tell myself that saying goodbye to old makeup means I’ll have more room for better things in the future. Newer things. Maybe I’ll find new colors and textures and brands to love!

Anyway, thank you for listening. I hope this was relevant to you in some way as a fellow beauty lover.

Here’s to all of us moving forward, one lipstick at a time.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

September 1st, 2021 by Karen 16 Comments

1. Nike leopard shoes!

Raise your hand if you believe leopard is a neutral. ✋

I’m with you, babe.

I bought these Nikes a while back during a Nordstrom sale, mostly for the leopard accents and the dainty little swoosh — although, really, I need to stop buying white shoes! They’re so hard to keep clean, but I just love how they look. They’re like the crisp, white button-up shirt of the tennis shoe universe. You can dress ’em up or down. They really do work with everything.

One might assume that all tennis shoes would inherently feel comfy, especially when compared to, like, 3-inch stilettos, but no! This pair happens to fall in the “never taking them off my feet, ever” category. They’re super soft and squishy like clouds!

2. “The Chair” on Netflix

I marathoned this show last weekend and didn’t know anything going into it, other than the fact that it stars Sandra Oh. Love her! Anyway, it’s good. The episodes fly by quickly, and it’s a really easy show to watch.

It’s a comedy about the faculty of an English department at a fictional Ivy League college, and Sandra Oh’s character, Ji-Yoon, is the newly appointed chair of the department (which is crumbling, BTW). The department’s losing students because it hasn’t evolved with the changing times, and Ji-Yoon struggles to keep things afloat after a series of unexpected events.

The writing is funny, touching and thoughtful. Several scenes made me think deeply about how people currently communicate online and in-person, and about how anything we do in public can be manipulated and distorted into soundbites and memes.

3. Vampire Weekend’s song “Oxford Comma”

On that note, on the last episode of “The Chair,” this song plays during the final credits.

How can you not love a tune that not only ponders punctuation but also shouts-out Lil’ Jon? Bonus: it’s catchy too.

4. A cute compact from Honest Beauty

Honest Beauty is updating their packaging to make it more eco-friendly, and I really love what they did with their cream blush. The compact is now metal and recycle-able.

This is Rose Pink, and you can wear it on lips and cheeks.

5. LANIEGE Lip Sleeping Mask

I really didn’t want to give into the hype, but man, this lip balm is good. Allegedly, it’s for wearing overnight while you sleep, but I just use it whenever. I love how it hugs my lips but isn’t obnoxiously sticky.

It’s also super moisturizing. Imagine your favorite moisturizing balm but to the Nth degree!

It has some nice ingredients, too, including vitamin C and other antioxidants. I have the original Berry flavor, which subtly tastes and smells like strawberry, but there’s a bunch of other flavors if berry isn’t your thing.

I want to tell you, “Don’t do it, girl,” but I also want to say, “Girl, do it,” because everything else will pale in comparison to this after you try it. From this day forward, I will side-eye every other lip balm asserting similar claims.

MAC Unsung Heroes: MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Havana

August 31st, 2021 by Karen 13 Comments

mac havana extra dimension eye shadow
Havana oh-nah-nah

Good morning, my friend! Here’s another look at one of my favorite MAC eyeshadows of all time, Extra Dimension Eyeshadow in Havana. It’s a deliciously gorgeous brown that I think you’ll love. I’ve worn it for years and still love it just as much as ever.

Girl… One day. One day I’ll sit down, put on my makeup for the day, and NOT do a brown smoky eye.

But today was not that day. 🙂

I had to run errands, and I wasn’t about to spend 45 minutes on my makeup just to buy some Charmin, so I went with something I’m (very) familiar with. I had to go to the pediatrician’s office to get a form for Connor’s pre-school enrollment, and then hit Target to get an industrial-sized case of toilet paper because last night I realized that we only had four rolls left in the house — total — which amplified my anxiety by like a million percent, so out came one of my favorite brown eyeshadows in the world, MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Havana.

I think it deserves more love than it gets.

What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.

Oh, my gosh! It’s a floating arm!!

Side note: whenever I say “Havana,” I think of that Camila Cabello song.

Havana, oh-nah-nah… La-la-la-la-la-la Havana oh-nah-nah…

That’s about the only part I know, LOL!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 693

August 30th, 2021 by Karen 9 Comments

monday poll 042516
Have a peaceful Monday

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

    1. What’s your least favorite currently popular TV show and why?

I never really understood the draw of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. I’ve tried watching a season or two and it just seems like the same thing over and over again. I know a lot of people love it, though.

    2. Best beauty buzzwords?

    MLBB (my lips but better).

    3. Your favorite women characters from science fiction?

Sarah Connor, from James Cameron’s masterpiece, “Terminator.”

    4. What are your most comfortable shoes?

I could walk for days in my UGG Kari sandals! I’ve worn them practically all summer.

    5. Where would you like to go to dinner next weekend, and what would you wear?

Sushi would be great (been craving it like crazy). The nearest sushi place isn’t fancy, so I’d probably wear dark jeans and white tee. Oh, and my UGG Kari sandals!

    6. A song you know most of the lyrics to?

Hmm, well lately I’ve been listening to “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” first thing in the morning. I know most of the words.

    7. Something most people may not know about you?

I didn’t learn how to properly swim until I was an adult, and so before I took swimming lessons in my 20s, I was terrified of swimming in the ocean.

    8. Favorite ride at Disneyland?

The Haunted Mansion is where it’s at, babe.

    9. A recurring dream you have?

I’m really late for my high school graduation. I’m so late that everyone is already walking across the stage to get their diplomas! I end up ironing my gown in the school office and sprinting to the ceremony in bare feet, and I make it to the stage just in time. It’s a really, really stressful dream, and it periodically pops up when I’m feeling worried about something.

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 675

August 29th, 2021 by Karen 3 Comments

Among turkey circles, he was known as the terror of Mt. Tam. Tabs was infamous as a killer of…careers among turkey models, because he had no patience for imperfection when it came to working with other models, whether feline, human, avian or otherwise.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he worked on many modeling campaigns with turkeys.

https://makeupandbeautyblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/tabs-turkey-love-720b.mp4

His affinity for turkeys was multifaceted. He loved everything about them and found them both fascinating and delicious.

Rosie

Rosie, on the other hand, hasn’t worked with any turkeys yet, but she does find them to be interesting. Today on her walk, she followed a gang of them around the hill. She pretended to not notice them but nonchalantly got progressively closer and closer until they were 10 feet away. She tried to play it cool, but when one of the larger turkeys stood up tall and flapped its wings, probably as a signal to Rosie to “step off,” Rosie flipped out and ran all the way back to the front door.

She’s not quite there yet in terms of having a full on conversation with them.

Maybe soon, though.

Saturday Surfing, August 28, 2021!

saved by the bell display

Good morning, friend! Happy Saturday. So, I went to Ulta yesterday and saw this “Saved By the Bell” limited edition makeup collection. First, I thought, weird, who asked for this?

Don’t get me wrong — I liked the show back in the ’90s, but is it just me, or does a collaboration between the characters of Bayside High and a makeup collection seem like a big stretch now? Perhaps about 20 years too late?

But I digress.

I’m sure there are super fans who are stoked by this collection, though! I know a handful of ladies who might appreciate the setting spray with a young and shirtless Mario Lopez (please note his curly mullet).

Oh, and in case you were unaware, “Saved By the Bell” is a tween/teen show about a group of high school friends, and several of its actors and actresses are still around doing stuff today, like Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tiffani Amber Thiessen. I wonder what they think about the makeup! I would probably cringe at the thought of teenage me kissing someone on a blush/highlighter compact.

Onto this week’s reading!

  • Makeup is back, and Ulta shares are going up.
  • Dust off your hard parts and your fancy tops, because we’re allegedly all going glam come winter.
  • Here are 13 AAPI-owned beauty brands to put on your radar.
  • Laura Mercier, bareMinerals and Buxom will no longer be owned by Shiseido.
  • Treat yourself this fall to an affordable beauty splurge with one of these makeup items under $10.
  • Say hi to these 9 Black-owned beauty brands on Amazon.
  • For the fragrance fanatics: a quick overview of the art of perfume making through history.
  • Speaking of scents, Chanel just bought a bunch of jasmine fields to safeguard their No.5 perfume!
  • The next big thing in hair? Bond-building products.
  • One of my favorite cat ladies, Jonathan Van Ness, has a new haircare line launching soon.

Love her!

Talk to me about hyperpigmentation, please.

I want to go here!

Just in case you need this today.

Have I ever mentioned that I love Goldfrapp?

I guess I probably shouldn’t have said that the weather had been cooler than usual the other day or mentioned wearing sweaters because it was 102 degrees here yesterday, and it’s supposed to hit 97 today, ahhh!

Guess I’ll take Coywolf for a swim.

What are you up to this weekend? Whatever it is, I hope all is well. Have a great day.

This or That: The Early 2000s Edition

August 27th, 2021 by Karen 7 Comments

baby karen newsboy cap
Hello from the early 2000s from Baby Karen’s skinny brows and jaunty newsboy cap!

How to play

Pick one or the other for each of the questions below, and copy/paste your answers in the comments. Can’t wait to see your picks! Mine are listed below.

This or That: The Early 2000s Edition

  • Capri pants with heels: yes or no?
  • Bedazzled jeans: yes or no?
  • Wide belt or trucker hat?
  • Long tunic or silky camisole top?
  • Pointy knee-high boots or UGG boots?
  • Juicy Couture tracksuits: yes or no?
  • Pashmina shawl or knit poncho?
  • Low-rise jeans or cargo pants?
  • Baby Phat or True Religion?
  • Newsboy cap or bucket hat?
  • Skinny scarf or wide headband?
  • Tube top or halter top?
  • Chunky necklace or pearls?
  • Baguette bag or oversized embellished bag?

Capri pants with heels: yes or no?

I wore this look to death, so yes. At the time I thought I looked super cute, but now I’m pretty sure those capri pants weren’t doing me any favors!

Bedazzled jeans: yes or no?

No! I never went there.

Wide belt or trucker hat?

Wide belt. I wasn’t a trucker hat gal.

Long tunic or silky camisole top?

I’ll take the silky camisole top, but only if I can wear it with my low-rise jeans!

Pointy knee-high boots or UGG boots?

Girl, I rocked those pointy knee-high boots like I was a backup dancer in a J. Lo video.

Juicy Couture tracksuits: yes or no?

Yes, although mine wasn’t Juicy Couture. I wore a knock-off set I bought on sale for 50% off from Old Navy!

Pashmina shawl or knit poncho?

Um, both? Not worn at the same time, of course. I lived in San Francisco at the time, and it was always good to have an extra layer for unexpectedly foggy days.

Low-rise jeans or cargo pants?

I wore both types of these pants, and now, looking back, I’m certain neither were flatting for my body type. If I had to choose, though, I’d go with cargo pants, I guess. At least you don’t have to pull them up every 10 minutes.

Baby Phat or True Religion?

Baby Phat!

Newsboy cap or bucket hat?

I’ll take a cheeky newsboy cap, please.

Skinny scarf or wide headband?

I used to wear both these trends at the same time!

Tube top or halter top?

Halter top.

Chunky necklace or pearls?

Pearls, baby. They’re a classic.

Baguette bag or oversized embellished bag?

Again, I’m guilty of both of these trends. I think I may have even put my baguette bag inside my oversized embellished bag on many occasion! I guess I’ll go with the oversized bag, because I like having room for all my crap.

Karen
