Summer Glam on the Go! Gray-Black Cat Eyes With an Unexpected Swish of Shimmering Bronze on a Smokey Lower Lash Line

June 23rd, 2020 by Karen 16 Comments

neutrogena protect tint tinted moisturizer
A small twist on your fave classic looks can make all the difference

On days when you crave just a little glam, like a level 3-4, this look hits the spot. It involves just a couple minor tweaks on classic eye makeup elements — black cat eyeliner and a smokey lower lash line — to give it a fresh twist.

Gray-black cat eyes

If you look closely at the liner, you’ll see soft dark gray along the outer edge of the upper lash liner, and the gray on the water lines. With black cat eye liner, you’ll typically see black pencil along the water lines, and black pencil liner is also commonly used as a base for black liquid liner when doing cat eyes, too.

But rather than reaching for the standard-issue black pencil, I used a gray liner instead, because it isn’t as stark, so it leads to a softer, more approachable look… And I like the subtle gradient of gray as it merges into black. (I’m all about that gradient life!)

I also paired the liner with matte warm browns on the upper lids and added a shimmery gold on the inner corners.

See the shimmery bronze peeking out from the lower lash line?

A shimmering bronze POP

Switch up your typical black or gray smokey lower lash line by layering a shimmery bronze eyeshadow. Place it right in the center of the lower lash line (aim for right underneath your iris).

To do this, I drew a thin line with a matte gray pencil liner along my lower lash line, then smudged it with a flat, compact head (super handy to have around for small, fine detail work).

neutrogena first crush blush
The gray pencil liner softens the edges of the black liquid liner on the upper lash line.

Then, I wiped the brush head on a paper towel, loaded it with a shimmery bronze powder eyeshadow, wet the brush head with a setting spray, and dabbed the wet brush head along the center of lower lash lines.

Tip: skip blending out the edges of your shimmering bronze eyeshadow. I think it looks cool to have the stark edge against the smokey gray! Not only do you save a step by skipping the blending, but you also maintain the intensity of the bronze, which is great because you really want it to stand out against the matte!

Where else am I gonna go?

As for the rest of the makeup, I kept the base and cheeks super sheer with a tinted moisturizer and cream blush because it’s hot here in Novato, and I wasn’t in the mood to wear a thick layer of makeup on the rest of my face… You always have the option of turning up the coverage to whatever you’re feeling on a given day. The world is your pickle, after all, so I’ll take bread-and-butter pickles, because I don’t do dill.

I ended up wearing this look to Trader Joe’s yesterday because, really, where else am I gonna go?? It’s one of the handful of places that’s 1) open, 2) somewhat entertaining, and 3) doesn’t skyrocket the low-level anxiety I’m living with lately.

On the way there, I drove past the bakery I worked at prior to the stay-at-home order, and I realized that, in a few weeks, I’ll have been out of work there *longer* than I actually worked there… It feels like I was living another life.

So, yeah, wore this to TJ’s, with the exception of the lipstick, lip liner and gloss, which faded after I ate my lunch (grilled cheese and tomato soup, if you’re curious). I didn’t bother to reapply since I was going to be wearing a mask anyway.

I think a half set of falsies on the outer corner would have been a nice touch, too, and I kinda wish I’d put some on!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 632

June 22nd, 2020 by Karen 39 Comments

good things are coming modnay poll june 22

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

    1. Oversized sweatpants or an oversized shirt?

    Oversized shirt

    2. Blue or orange eyeshadow?

    ORANGE

    3. One thing you can do this week to show yourself some self-love?

I’m going to stop mindlessly scrolling through social media at night (it’s such a time vortex), and go to bed earlier. Amazing what a full night’s sleep will do for your energy levels, mood, mental acuity… Yeah, sleep is good!

    4. Best beauty advice you’ve ever gotten from your hair stylist?

Don’t overdo it with your hair dryer or curling iron…or heat stylers in general.

    5. Concealer or foundation?

Hmm… Well, I like both, but I’ll go with foundation here, since I’m not a big fan of that feeling of concealer sitting on my face.

    6. The O.G. Urban Decay Naked Palette or NARS Orgasm Blush?

    O.G. Naked Palette

I like Orgasm well enough, but it’s too sparkly. Give me NARS Deep Throat any day of the week!

    7. Spray tan or blowout?

Blowout, but only if I don’t have to do it myself. LOL.

    8. How many palettes are too many palettes for a single eye look? Your max amount of palettes for a single eye look?

Two! Anything more than two is too complicated.

    9. Leopard print or zebra print?

    Leopard

    10. Mascara on your lower lashes: yes or no?

    Sure, why not?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

1. Oversized sweatpants or an oversized shirt?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 612

June 21st, 2020 by Karen 11 Comments

Tabs never knew his real dad. He grew up a stray on the mean streets of Mill Valley, and when he came to live with us, it was more of an employer-employee relationship, where I served as his gravy chef, deep-tissue kitty masseuse, fur stylist and executive assistant.

But he and El Hub had a very special relationship. It wasn’t really parental, but they had a deep friendship. If Tabs were here, he would wish El Hub a Happy Father’s Day and say thank you.

Tabs and El Hub went on many long walks together on the hill outside our condo, exploring further than Tabs and I did. They got into all kinds of mischief over the years, like the time Tabs cornered a shrew by the old oak tree, or the time Tabs found an unguarded turkey egg in the grass, or the time Tabs got into a fur-flying scuffle with a local Russian Blue over catnip property rights.

After a hard day’s work, they loved hanging out together.

Tabs seemed very grateful for the bond he shared with El Hub, and whenever El Hub called his name, “Tabs!” no matter where either one of them were in the house, Tabs always came running and meowed every step of the way.

Anyone who thinks that being the face of a global fashion brand and kitty modeling empire is easy doesn’t understand what it takes — all the sacrifice and commitment. And it also takes having people and cats you can trust who have your best interest at heart.

El Hub was the closest thing Tabs ever had to a father, and they loved each other deeply.

Not only were they colleagues working to build a feline fashion empire. They were also family members and best friends.

Karen

Saturday Surfing, June 20th, 2020

June 20th, 2020 by Karen 17 Comments

happy saturday big green leaf pink plumeria
Have a lush Saturday.

Heya, friend. ? Good morning and welcome to summer! It’s officially summertime in the Northern Hemisphere. On a normal year, Connor and I would be spending lazy days at the pool…

Flashback pic to a family visit to Hawaii (circa 2017)

Our homeowners association pool just opened for the season, and I’ve seen a few of my neighbors lounging about, but I’m still deciding whether to brave the water. There’s a big sign on the front gate with all of the new COVID guidelines, and I’m a little nervous about running into, well…people. I joke all the time about how the lockdown has turned me into a bit of a recluse. I’m pretty outgoing under normal circumstances, but not so much now. ?

Am I the only one?

  • In this week’s edition of “Food-Related Collaborations,” Morphe’s launching a new limited edition makeup collection with Coca-Cola.
  • Quick question — would you buy makeup and skincare products by Kanye West?
  • Apparently, the pandemic has ushered in an era of false lashes and Crocs (as in the shoes).
  • Ah, to be wed during a pandemic… Here’s how brides who celebrated with socially distanced weddings prepared for their big day.
  • Makeup artists answer seven burning beauty questions.
  • A short history on the origins of perfume.
  • Creative ways beauty pros are facing the pandemic.
  • A pregnant dermatologist breaks down her pregnancy skincare routine.
  • A woman charged with burning police cars is tracked down because of her (wait for it) eyebrows.
  • Why do cats like hanging out in boxes so much?
  • The best bronzers for black skin.

Just in case it’s hotter than hades there and you need to feel like you’re next to a body of water…

Why don’t you come over, Valerie?

This is so fun. ?

She does justice to my favorite Soundgarden song.

Another throwback fave…

I like doing this 5-minute workout to warm up my body.

Connor walked into my office while I was watching this and started cracking up! (“Mommy, *WHAT* are you watching?”)

I really wanted to bake today, but it’s supposed to be 80 degrees here, so I’m not sure I want to turn on the oven… Yes, I’m a weather wimp.

What are you up to this weekend? Doing anything for Father’s Day? We’re taking El Hub out to Marin French Cheese (it’s open again!) for a picnic. It’ll be nice to do something we haven’t done in a while.

Hope you’re doing something fun. Have a nice weekend.

Birthday Kicks: Nike Air Jordan 1 High Zip in Bordeaux

June 19th, 2020 by Karen 6 Comments

nike air jordan high zip bordeaux

If you’re thinking about adding these Nike high-tops to a wish list, all I have to say is JUST DO IT! They’re super cute and so comfortable.

Incidentally…if you ask someone to get them for you, perhaps as a birthday gift, there’s a Filipino old wives’ tale I should tell you about. It says that if someone gives you a pair of shoes as a gift, you have to give them some money in return (even just a couple pennies will do); otherwise, badness ensues and the relationship suffers.

Of course, there’s also a Filipino old wives’ tale that says that if you fall asleep with wet hair, you’ll wake up blind… Yeah, that one caused me much anxiety as a child. ?

So, I didn’t think much about the old wives’ tale regarding the shoe-money exchange until my college roommate gave me a pair of go-go boots as a gift. I loved them! — but I didn’t give her any money in return, and shortly thereafter our relationship grew tense. By the time she moved out at the end of the school year, we weren’t on good terms, and I blame the go-go boots!

All of this is to say that the moment I opened the box these Nike Air Jordan Zip Ups came in, which I got for my birthday from El Hub and Connor Claire, I immediately retrieved two quarters from my wallet and gave them to El Hub and Connor as a precautionary measure.

These shoes are so much cooler than I expected because they’re so comfortable! They’re so squishy inside… I feel like I’m walking on clouds, and because of the zipper, they’re easy to slip in and out of. The next time I go on a trip involving an airplane (whenever that may be), these will be my go-to sneaks.

The color is ah-mah-zing. Sometimes it’s a rich burgundy; other times a dark plummy purple. Now all I need is a nail polish to match!

One last item of note, although this applies to Nikes in general IMO, I suggest going a half size up, because I think Nikes run a little small. I usually wear a size 7 in most shoes, but I’m a 7.5 for sure in Nikes.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF!

Checking in: Quarantine Fatigue, Filipino Comfort Food, Cool and Comfy Underwear, “Alone,” and Cats, of Course!

June 18th, 2020 by Karen 41 Comments

Checking in with you today! Things I’ve been watching, cooking and thinking about this week.

Hi, friend. 🙂 How’s it going? I hope things are OK on your end. I’m feeling chatty today, so let’s catch up. Before we get into it, though, turn up the sound, and watch this video:

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Daniel Martin (@danielmartin) on Jun 16, 2020 at 8:33pm PDT

Goodness gracious, I love her. So sassy!

I’m still here, still hanging on, although I’m definitely feeling the effects of quarantine fatigue (read about it here, here and here).

Businesses and public facilities are slowly beginning to open up here again. Parks, stores, restaurants (for outdoor dining only). Word on the street is Sephora will fling its doors open next week, too.

Part if me is relieved, and part of me is, like, “Well, what happens if/when there’s a second wave? Or what if the vaccines don’t work?” I’ve been “adulting” pretty intensely lately, as El Hub and I have seem to have serious discussions about hard things, oh…every two seconds.

On the glass-half-full side, at least it’s not the zombie apocalypse! , Which would be about 100 times harder. Our metaphorical boat is still above water.

On that note, here’s some levity! This has kept me afloat this week…

My childhood on a plate

You know those foods that take you back to your childhood? Filipino mung bean stew (ginisang mungo) does that for me. We had it at least once a week during the week when I was growing up. It’s easy to make and oh-so fulfilling.

Mung beans look and taste a little like lentils. When you cook them, they soften to an almost creamy consistency.

filipino mung bean stew
Don’t even think about serving it atop cauliflower rice.

There are many different riffs on this stew, which doesn’t have very many ingredients, but my favorite has bacon and spinach. And pancetta, shallot, garlic, dried mung beans (of course), beef broth, water and fish sauce.

My mom and dad always cooked it in a pot on the stove, but if you do it that way you have to soak the beans beforehand, and they take FOREVER to cook in a pot. If I get impatient, they don’t turn out as soft and creamy as I want them to be, so now I make it in the Instant Pot. In 10 minutes the beans are cooked perfectly.

Here’s what you do!

  • Saute a pack of chopped pancetta (I get the pre-diced package at Trader Joe’s) in the Instant Pot until the fat has rendered, and add 1 chopped medium shallot and 3 tablespoons of chopped garlic. Continue to saute until nice and fragrant, and then turn off the heat.
  • Add 2 cups of beef broth, 1 cup of water, and 1 cup of rinsed mung beans (I did not soak them).
  • Cook on high pressure on the Bean setting for 10 minutes, and then use the Instant Pot’s quick release to release the steam (be careful!). Then add fish sauce to taste, and throw a few handfuls of spinach in there. Stir until wilted.

To get the full Filipino experience, you have to serve it on top of white rice. ??

If you don’t have fish sauce around, you can also use plain salt to flavor the stew, or try a different sauce that has a salty undertone, like soy sauce, tamari or maybe even Worcestershire sauce. It’ll change the flavor profile, but as long as it’s yummy, right? Who cares?

filipino mung bean stew
Instant Pot saves the day!

I made this a few days ago, and it did me a world of good. I’ve been missing my family, and this tastes just like home.

Oh! — I gotta give a shout-out to my Instagram buddy Beverly. She posts Filipino recipes every Friday, and she made this dish in her stories last week, which got me craving for it.

For the love of granny panties

Allow me to give you some space for a preemptive “thank you” because your granny panty-lovin’ heart will be forever changed for the better after you order this six-pack of Fruit of the Loom Women’s Breathable Micro-Mesh Low-Rise Briefs from Target for $13.99.

fruit of the loom granny panties
Say “yes” to underpants.

I’m usually a cotton undies kinda girl due to being unusually particular about breathability, but even though these are 93% Polyester and 7% Spandex, the micro-mesh creates a cool breeze that cascades over the mountains of your booty. The material is also moisture wicking.

The material is super soft and comfortably lightweight. No pulling or tugging either.

Even though these are allegedly “low-rise,” the waistband still goes up pretty high, so my tummy still feels covered up enough when I’m wearing high-rise pants.

The sizing is pretty on point too.

YOU’RE WELCOME!

“Alone” on the History channel

EHRMAHGOODNESS. I love and hate this show. It’s a reality competition where 10 people (wilderness experts and survivalists who know what they’re doing) get dropped off in a harsh, remote wilderness location all by themselves and with limited provisions, and the person who lasts off the land the longest wins half a million dollars.

I love it. I fire it up before bed and kinda half-watch it while I stretch. So, if I’m face down on my yoga mat during pigeon pose, I can just hang out there for a few minutes and half-listen without missing much. But it’s a fascinating show! I’m only equipped to handle car camping (I gotta have a bathroom with running water and a shower and toilet nearby. These are non-negotiable.), so I’m learning a lot.

I would tap out even before they dropped me off, TBH.

It’s also fascinating how so much boils down to luck. Even the best trained, most experienced contestants sometimes succumb to simple rotten luck. It’s not always about the most competent person who makes it to the end. Sometimes it’s just the person who manages to dodge more of Mother Nature’s metaphorical bullets.

Anyway, THIS IS ALSO WHY I SIMULTANEOUSLY HATE THIS SHOW — because after El Hub watched about five episodes he started getting ideas. Last Sunday we went on a hike through the nearby Indian Valley Nature Preserve, and he decided to make a bow and arrow using materials he found on the trail.

Now he’s covered in poison oak.

And why is he covered in poison oak? Well, because he made his bow and arrow out of old dry poison oak branches without realizing it.

SIGH.

Rosie’s new role: babydoll

Last, but certainly not least, I keep catching these two besties cuddling and playing together, and it’s the cutest thing. Rosie is so, so patient. She lets Connor treat her like her baby doll. Connor dresses her up in doll clothes and wraps her paws around teddy bears and stuffed animals.

connor rosie pose

connor rosie pose nashville the bear

Anywho, that’s what I’ve been up to this week so far. How are you doing?

Product Spotlight: Kitsch Pro No-Snag Elastic

June 17th, 2020 by Karen 2 Comments

kitsch pro elastics
Saving you from the messy bun, one elastic at a time

Perhaps the best $3 I ever spent at Ulta! In an attempt to get my mop out of the messy lockdown scrunchie bun (it’s threatening to become a permanent fixture on my head), I’ve been wearing a half-up, half-down pony using these black no-snag mini elastics by Kitsch Pro.

They’re small, thin black plastic hair ties with a flat edge and a slick finish that allows you to easily slip them into your hair to secure ponytails and braids. I’ve used this type of elastic before, and this is the only one that doesn’t pull or break any hairs as I’m putting my hair up or down in a ponytail. It won’t move for nothing, and you won’t end up with a handful of broken hairs when you take it out.

kitsch no snag elastics

Granted, they aren’t built to last… Each elastic is good for maybe two uses at the most, because they come out misshapen and useless, which is a bummer… I still like ’em though.

If your hair is on the thinner side, I think you might like them too. Or, if you live with little girls, they’d be great for tiny ponytails and braids.

Available in clear, brown and black, and a pack of 100 elastics is three bucks!

Karen
