The MAC 240S: My Preferred Brush for Precise Face Powder Placement

January 28th, 2020 by Karen 5 Comments

mac 240S
The MAC 240 S! I use it every day.

Generally, I try to wear the bare minimum amount of face powder I can get away with because when I pile it on, I think it makes me look older. *Le sigh* But even though I don’t wear a ton, I still like to wear some because it 1) mellows out my pores, 2) sets my foundation/concealer so they last longer, and 3) reduces the gleam on the shine spots.

Technically, my fave powder brush du jour is an oversized eye blending brush, the MAC 240S ($34). It’s perfect for that “just enough powder but not too much” look I like, and I love the shape and size. It’s like an XXL tapered blending brush, so it’s handy for applying a thin veil of product right in the center of my forehead…

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 611

January 27th, 2020 by Karen 36 Comments

Movin’ into Monday

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.

    1. Tacos or burritos?

Tacos, all day every day, and one thing they have going for them: you can order different kinds of tacos, like one fish, one carnitas and one grilled chicken, for the same meal.

It should be said that I do also like burritos…but they’re just too much of a commitment (ha ha). Plus, have you seen the burritos around here in Northern California? They’re HUGE.

    2. Do you consider gift-with-purchases when you buy makeup?

These days, not really, because I’m pickier about what I keep around, and most of the items I’ve gotten in past gift-with-purchases rarely get used. There may be one or two items I like, but more often than not, they get given to friends or family.

When I was younger and still building up my collection, it was a different story, because I loved me some freebies!

    3. What’s your ride-or-die MAC lipstick?

Oh! MAC Velvet Teddy. If we were vampires, I would ask Velvet Teddy to be my vampire bride from here to eternity. (Yes, it’s that serious.)

    4. The last person (or people) you took a long car trip with?

El Hub and Connor last June. We drove down the Central California coast to Hearst Castle.

    5. Do you bite your nails (or have you in the past)?

Nope. Never was into gnawing at my nails.

Popping pimples, though? Girl, that’s another story.

Life is short

We’re big basketball fans around here, and if you follow basketball at all, I’m sure you’ve heard the news about Kobe Bryant and his daughter. 🙁 I’m heartbroken for his family… I mean, we all know our days on earth are precious and numbered, but it’s easy to forget, at least it is for me, amidst the frippery of everyday life.

Hug your loved ones a little tighter today, friend. Sending you love and warm light from this little corner of the Internet.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 591

January 26th, 2020 by Karen 10 Comments

Tabs had excellent table manners for a roguish food enthusiast.

Contrast this with PGR (Pretty Girl Rosie), who likes to have food poured over her head when she comes to the bowl…

Rosie's food shower

She’s polite about most things, but when it comes to food, she’s got absolutely no shame.

Tabs, though, would wait patiently while you prepared his food. Even though he loved to eat, as evidenced by his profound girth. (At the height of his powers, he was a mighty 18 pounds.) But he would always wait until you were out of the way…

And then he’d stroll over to enjoy his meal…

Little known fact: Tabs was an accomplished inventor.
He was also a hugely successful kitty supermodel in the gravy-themed makeup and beauty space.

Cats are so funny with their weird quirks!

affirmators cards
You’re doing alright, friend.

Happy Caturday, lady! Or, should I say, “Happy Unicornday?”

Hmm… Doesn’t flow off the tongue as readily, but I like it. ?

There are two reasons I’m into that unicorn up there at the top. 1) Its silver-haired mane gives me something to look forward to someday. (Oh, to be a silver-haired unicorn! #BIGDREAMS) And 2) because the picture is on every single card in this deck of Affirmators! (exclamation mark included!) cards I got in my stocking for Christmas.

It’s so cute! Each card has a positive saying on it, and the way it works is you shuffle the deck (unicorn side up), pull a card out, and read it, ideally out loud (it’s supposed to work better that way). And then you carry that thought with you throughout the rest of your day.

affirmators cards

In my new morning routine, the first thing I do — instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media or reading my emails on my phone — is feed my mind with these good things, and I kid you not, it sets the tone for a pretty good day.

This one is my favorite…

affirmators cards

I like this one too!

OK, here’s today’s list o’ links…

  • If you’ve ever felt like you have to juggle 12 things at once, and it chips away at your soul because it seems impossible to find time for your favorite creative endeavors, this piece on how many women rarely have long stretches of time to focus on anything anymore might speak to you. The writer, Brigid Schulte, says: “Women’s time has been interrupted and fragmented throughout history, the rhythms of their days circumscribed by the Sisyphean tasks of housework, childcare and kin work – keeping family and community ties strong. If what it takes to create are long stretches of uninterrupted, concentrated time, time you can choose to do with as you will, time that you can control, that’s something women have never had the luxury to expect, at least not without getting slammed for unseemly selfishness.”
  • I’m loving this range of stylish feline furniture, but let’s get real… Rosie would opt for an empty Amazon cardboard box over a cat-sized platform bed (with a mattress and bed sheets and EVERYTHING!) any old day.
  • Say “I love you” to yourself this Valentine’s Day ❤️ with a unique gift from the El Paso Zoo. They’ll name a cockroach after your ex, then feed it to a meerkat live on camera. ?
  • The abundance of hydrangeas on the Azores is outstanding! The archipelago, located in the mid-Atlantic, has a delicate, narrow weather pattern, which allows these flowers to blanket the islands with blue and purple blossoms.
  • Got littles? This shower attachment made for young children softens the flow of water and sets it at the perfect height for little ones.
  • The Last Manilaners is a new documentary about the last living Jewish refugees who fled to the Philippines to escape the Holocaust. Locals welcomed the refugees with open arms and protected them when World War II reached Philippine shores.
  • For my Bay Area babes, FYI: Market Street in San Francisco is going car free next week. As of Wednesday, January 29, private vehicles will no longer be allowed to travel from near Van Ness Avenue all the way to the waterfront. ?

For anyone who needs this today

I do this a few times a week… Good stuff!

Somebody make this soup for me please.

Isn’t she lovely?

It’s Charlotte, dahlings.

I’m on my way outside with Connor to catch some rays before the rain returns. Connor’s learning how to ride a bike (with training wheels), so we’re going to do about 300 loops around the circle.

It’s my cardio for the day!

Have a great weekend. See you soon. ?

Lip of the Day: Chanel Virevoltante, Kate Spade Glasses and a Costco Optical Tip!

January 24th, 2020 by Karen 15 Comments

chanel virevoltante
Kate Spade frames and Chanel Virevoltante lipstick

Costco Optical, man… Really impressed me. Good selection, fantastic prices.

Yup, I wore Chanel Virevoltante lipstick yesterday to get those Kate Spade frames I’ve been thinking about from Costco, woo-hoo! Costco is having a promotion, by the way, until January 28 where you can get a second pair of frames for $40 off, so I ended up also getting this clear pair by Via Spiga, which I’m going to use for prescription sunglasses…and I’m very excited about that! I’ve never had a pair of prescription sunglasses before. I feel so fancy. 🙂

The lipstick didn’t last through the ramen I had for lunch, though…

Belly full o’ noodles

And that’s because opaque berry rose Virevoltante is in the Chanel Rouge Allure line, which is Chanel’s line of highly pigmented, lightweight lippies, which are relatively long lasting for a featherweight-feeling lipstick (seriously, sometimes I forget I have one on), but they’re nowhere near as resilient as a MAC liquid lipstick, by comparison, which you can wear from this lifetime into the next.

Virevoltante will last about three hours if you’re only trying on glasses or puttering around, but it’ll peace out if you start eating hot noodles.

It’s a popular star at the moment on account of how saturated it is. It’s INTENSE, but it still doesn’t creep into lip lines. I think it’s also comfy and moisturizing, to boot, and it makes my lips look so smooth. Love it!

What Was the Last Thing You Got at Sephora?

January 23rd, 2020 by Karen 18 Comments

The littlest beauty lover!

Yes, girlfriend, I was just there! I picked up a bottle of Kate Somerville Anti-Bac Clearing Lotion, one of my favorite products of all time, and the best acne cream I’ve ever found, hands down.

How about you? What was the last thing you got at Sephora?

Smokey Eyes, Smudged Sparkly Eyeliner, and Why Clean Tapered Blending Brushes Are Your BFF

January 23rd, 2020 by Karen 18 Comments

smokey eyes sparkly lashlines
Back in my happy place!

Can I get a whoop-whoop from all my kindred spirits out there? — the makeup lovers who love rubbing freshly washed air-dried brushes ever-so-gently across their face, and love the fresh scent of those baby soft bristles? (Side note: If this describes you, I bet you also like sticking your face in clean laundry when it comes out of the dryer, too!)

clean brushes
So fresh, so clean

The reason you’re staring at this bevy of brushes is because I built a big-@ss pile of dirty brushes I’d been needing to wash since — gulp! — before Thanksgiving. Weeks ago, I tucked them away in a corner of my office and kinda forgot.

WHOOPS!

Well, I washed them yesterday because the bakery has been closed this week. Apparently, no one comes in this time of year because many people are still on their New Year’s diets, but folks start to fall off the wagon toward the end of January.

So…I finally had time to wash this big-@ss pile of brushes, and I also had time to do the makeup love of my life: SMOKEY EYES.

I even put on falsies (I have a couple bundles on the outer corners).

Subtle sparkle on the lash lines

A few things…

I always forget what a difference clean tapered blending brushes can make. Just in case you don’t know what I’m talking about, this is what they look like:

tapered blending brush clean
It’s handy to have a few around.

Whenever I’m doing smokey looks, clean tapered blending brushes are very, very handy… At the very least, I like to keep two or three on deck. Having bristles that don’t have any eyeshadow on them is key because the clean brush hairs pick up/remove excess eyeshadow while also softening any hard edges, so everything looks that much smoother and more seamless.

Another thing? You’ll want to use the lightest touch while blending, and avoid pressing so hard that the bristles splay out (this just presses the powder into your pores, which makes it harder to sheer out your shadow). All you want is the very tip to lightly touch your lid.

smokey eyes tapered blending light touch
Please don’t smash your brush head into your crease.
smokey eyes sparkly lashlines unblended blneded
You know those pics of yourself online where you look crazy? YUP.

Last, but not least, always keep a clean tapered brush around for a last blending pass at the end. After you’ve done everything — base, blush, lips, the whole schebang — lightly blend your eyeshadow one last time, both on top of the lids and along the edges of the shadow to finalize the shape of your eye makeup.

It makes all the difference!

Easiest French Twist With the Mia Beauty Lockettes (LOVE THESE!)

January 22nd, 2020 by Karen 9 Comments

mia beauty lockettes
30-second French twist

I have to wear my hair up at the bakery, and there are only so many high ponytails and messy buns I can take.

I HAVE REACHED MY LIMIT!

Enter these fantastic doodads. They’re the Mia Beauty Lockettes, and they’re comprised of dual interlocking plastic combs with wavy teeth, and I’ll be darned if they aren’t the easiest way to lock down a French twist.

mia beauty lockettes
Ready to rock your world!

Chic, elegant, easy, and once you get them in, you can basically rock out like a headbanger and do cartwheels, and these suckers will stay in place!

They’re they’re so easy to use, too. All you have to do is gather your hair up into a French twist, then stick one comb into one side…

mia beauty lockettes

And the other comb into the other, thereby interlocking the teeth.

And that holds your French twist in place.

I have a good amount of hair. It’s past my shoulders, and I expected my hair to bust out, but the Lockettes keep every strand secure.

The final result

They come in brown or black for $6.99 a pair, and you can find them online and at drugstores. HIGHLY recommended.
