reverse foundation
Getting a lot of play lately.

Hello, friend! Happy December Caturday ❄️?? to ya.

You know, just when I think I’ve seen it all among the pantheon of makeup tips and now it’s just the same bevy of basic tips recycled and repackaged for the quadrillionth time and I stop expecting to ever see anybody ever add anything new to the beauty news cycle, ever, I stumble upon something I’ve never tried before, and sometimes it rocks my world.

Two words: reverse foundation.

It’s a new (I think) base technique, and I gave it a try for the first time the other day. It’s where you start by applying cream products to your skin first while it’s bare (contour, if you wear it, blush and then highlighter), let them set, and then do a sheer foundation on top.

Girl, it is game-changing.

Blowing my mind right now

The idea is that by layering the foundation on top of the contour/blush/highlighter products, everything blends together so seamlessly and naturally that it looks like you’re wearing the perfect amount of makeup. I tried it and took pics the other day, and I think the subtlety of the effect gets a little lost in photographs, but it looks really, really good in real life, especially outdoors in full sun.

Try it sometime!

I’ve been even more into “real life” makeup than usual lately because of a late-night vortex I got sucked into on Facebook called Celebrity Close-Up. It’s a page that posts zoomed-in pics of celebs wearing makeup, and OH, MY GOSH, it’s a revelation. I mean, I take a lot of closeup pics of myself for the blog, and I’m know that many things can influence the way a particular look will look in real life, like the direction of the light source, the color temperature of the lighting, the finishes you’re wearing, the makeup brands themselves, how much water you’ve been drinking, and the techniques and tools you’re using, and the same looks can look cake-y one minute and natural the next, but to see celebs without any filtering or airbrushing is pretty eye-opening.

I have to say that whoever is handling Kiera Knightly’s, Lupita Nyong’o’s and Kristen Stewart’s makeup is a freaking genius (hmm, I wonder if it’s Lisa Eldgridge’s work?), because up close all of them are wearing breathtaking full-coverage makeup, but it doesn’t look heavy at all.

On that note, this weekend’s reading…

  • This post talks about some of the different approaches to natural-looking, or “no-makeup,” makeup, including this year’s new-ish “boy beat” trend.

First, what’s the trend and who defines it? And if you can’t see a “no-makeup” makeup product on your skin, does that mean the product is doing what it’s supposed to do?? I’m so confused…

  • One of the biggest beauty trends right now is vegan makeup, and it’s poised to blow up into a $20.8 billion business by 2025.
  • Toddlers: the newest market for makeup. Stila’s former chief product development officer just launched a new makeup line called Petite ‘N Pretty for girls as young as four years old.

About this, part of me thinks, “It’s all in good fun, Karen. TAKE A CHILL PILL,” because my mom let me have Lip Smackers when I was a kid, but another part of me is also super uncomfortable with the idea of kids being shown that they need to do things to their faces.

  • Cats in literature? It’s a long tail… (Badum-tss!)
  • This writer decided to find out what would happen if all of the makeup she had to work with was food, and yes, in case you were wondering, there *was* a dry spaghetti noodle involved.
  • A breakdown of how moisturizers work
  • Fave read of the week: The Joy of having a bare face
  • I’m sorry I had to subject you to this, but I can’t be the only person haunted by this MAC brush manicure.
  • This 39-year-old cat lover became a millionaire by inventing a contraption that potty trains cats.

This dude makes udon noodles from scratch while he hangs out with his cats!

Modern day cat ladies tend to the kitties that live in the ruins of Rome.

Ooh, I wanna try this.

And I want to try this too (I’m a little obsessed with Pixiwoo at the moment).

OK, now I’m off to go wash my brushes because I haven’t done a deep clean in weeks. I’ve just been wiping the same ones off on a paper towel and hoping for the best. #keepingitreal!

Man, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to make it through the day, you know? LOL! ?

You have a good weekend, OK?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

MAC Patrick Starrr Slay Ride Holiday Collection: Swatches and a Rose Gold Look

November 30th, 2018 by Karen 14 Comments

Take a Sleigh Ride with Patrick Starrr

I think it’s safe to say that Patrick Starrr sleigh-ed 2018.

Get it? Sleigh-ed?? ?

OK, sorry, you know how I am with puns.

The mega influencer/YouTuber/all-around “It Boy” is launching yet another collab with MAC, and it’s pretty intense for a holiday collection. There are five lipglosses, three lipsticks, a huge over-sized Mineralized Skinfinish that’s almost as big as my head, a translucent loose setting powder, two eyeshadow palettes and three pigments, and the whole shebang drops December 3rd.

Va-va-voom!

Patrick Starrr’s known for bringing the glam, so there’s lots of sparkle, shine and cheeky innuendo. The products have names like “Shady Santa” and “Ride My Sleigh.”

I just swatched the collection and took a few things out for a spin while I returned almost all of the clothing I bought on Black Friday… Side note: The jig is sooooo up. I officially loathe shopping for clothes because apparently I’m terrible at it now and can no longer dress myself without professional help. ARRRGHHHH!

I did, however, keep this $10 scarf from Old Navy, which happens to go with the rose gold eyes I wore using Patrick’s Oh Holy Eyes palette.

Wearing the Eye Shadow X 6 in Oh Holy Eyes and the PatrickStarrr Pigment on my eyes, and MAC Vintage Rose Cream Colour Base (discontinued) and Mineralize Skinfinish in Baby Its Gold Outside on my cheeks.

Some thoughts on the products…

  • Eye Shadow X 6 in Oh Holy Eyes: Swatches smoothly and intensely, but when the shadows are applied dry, they’re sheer on my lids. The shimmers are pretty frosty, too, so I had to buff like crazy to take the shine down a few notches.
  • Pigment in PatrickStarrr: Fine shimmer? I like!
  • Mineralize Skinfinish in Baby Its Gold Outside: Intense and frosty.
  • Lipstick in Spank Me Santa: A smooth, opaque, WEARABLE rose
  • Dazzleglass in Twerk for Gifts: Surprisingly subtle glitter that isn’t gritty. Love this as a layering gloss for nudes and pinks.
  • Set Powder: Completely translucent (no flashback), but very, very matte.

Growing Out My Grays: Chapter 1

November 29th, 2018 by Karen 25 Comments

Yup. Really doing this.

I actually did my hair! It’s only been, oh…two weeks! The impetus very likely has something to do with our guests leaving. We had family staying with us for the past couple weeks, but they’ve gone now, and you know how it is when you’re sharing your space with other people, even people you love. It can be a delicate dance. I need some alone time in order to function (somewhat) normally.

So this morning I did my hair for the first time in forever, and I noticed the grays starting to peek through. That’s when it hit me — I’M REALLY DOING THIS. Here I am, one month since the last time I colored my hair at home using demi-permanent color.

gray hair one month after coloring
Hey, gray!

I bought all of this hair coloring stuff from Sally Beauty two months ago, thinking that I’d eventually grow to love coloring my own hair…

I imagined myself being able to do it on my own whenever I wanted to and saving money.

At least that was the idea.

In reality, I was in tears after the last time! You’re gonna think I’m such a big baby, but there was dye all over the bathroom and the tub, and my hair turned out a little too dark (like shoe polish). It didn’t look quite right, and the first thing El Hub said when he saw me was, “Boy…it’s REALLY dark.”

That pushed me over the edge.

Have You Tried the $7 Trader Joe’s Facial Cleansing Oil With Argan & Coconut Oils?

November 29th, 2018 by Karen 8 Comments

trader joes facial cleansing oil

The Trader Joe’s beauty section should have a big-@ss warning sign above the aisle — something akin to “BEWARE! YOU’RE ENTERING SPUR-OF-THE-MOMENT SPENDING TERRITORY!”

That would work, or better yet a huge LCD screen with winged dollar bills floating away, since we’re moving toward a world where we will soon be communicating solely through emojis. ? ? ? ? ?

I’ve always had trouble saying “no” to anything having to do with makeup removal, especially face oils, because what goes on, must come off, so grabbing this facial cleansing oil was a no-brainer. Somehow, TJ’s found a way to make it smell like the most heavenly mix of eucalyptus, lemon verbena and roses, although, from a quick scan of the ingredients, it doesn’t appear to have any of those things in it!

And speaking of the ingredient list, it contains different types of oils, too, not just argan and coconut. I also see sunflower, crambe abyssinica seed (which is new to me) and capyrylic/capric triglyceride.

It doesn’t look like this will replace my beloved DHC Deep Cleansing Oil anytime soon. I mean, it’s fine for removing mellower makeup — basically anything non-waterproof is fine — but it can’t handle heavy-duty, long-wearing stuff on its own. It’s $7 for a 4-oz. bottle, though, so the price is right, and it doesn’t break me out or make my combo skin feel dry, so I’m not too crabby about it not being all that effective on long-wearing makeup. But still…I’m not about to go into hoarder mode for it. I’ll save that for when the Rose Hand Cream comes back!

Karen

MAC Sweet Assortment: Retro Matte/Shiny Pretty Things holiday set

Heya, friend. How’s it going? I miss you. Hope you’re doing well. I’m chugging along…albeit slowly and not very productively. I’m in the midst of a midweek malaise, perhaps tied to the fact that it’s cloudy and drizzling. 🙁

It’s as if I’ve completely forgotten how to function normally or something!

I hope to regain the gift of gab again soon, but while I continue to quietly work through it, please enjoy this bevy o’ lip swatches…

MAC Sweet Assortment: Retro Matte/Shiny Pretty Things (a $69.50 limited edition holiday set)

Origins Lip Swatches (LOTS of Them), Post-Thanksgiving Doldrums, and Michael B. Jordan (BABE!)

November 27th, 2018 by Karen 29 Comments

Seriously, what was I thinking?? Yesterday I thought I’d just get back in the saddle, sit at my desk, and resume my pre-Thanksgiving work groove…

Nope! Apparently, I must have lost my damn mind, because why is it SO HARD to get back into the swing of things after a big holiday? Especially Thanksgiving? I don’t know… (Maybe it’s all the food.)

Yesterday was a tough one. I love my routines, and the holiday broke ’em.

Anyway, it’s always hard for me to get back into my routines after a holiday, and I know it’s hard for other people, too. It’s vexing. I’m vexed… Ha ha ha! Yesterday morning I sat at my desk for three hours trying to describe Fresh Seaberry Skin Nutrition Cleansing Oil while everything and the kitchen sink crossed my mind.

I simply could NOT concentrate, so, on that note, here’s a picture of Michael B. Jordan…

He is SO adorable. I saw him in Creed II the other night, and El Hub was like, “Hey, I wanna watch Creed II,” and I was like, “Boxing? Meh… But Michael B. Jordan? ALRIGHT!”

And it’s not just that he’s good-looking (he is though!). He’s also a good actor, and I’ve seen him in interviews and other things, and he seems like he as a good head on his shoulders, but who knows, right? The media portrays people in a certain light, and the light that bathes Michael B. Jordan is GOOD, ha ha!

Anyway, he seems like a nice guy. And polite.

Don’t ask me why, but polite does it for me. I mean, the handsomeness and the muscles do it for me too, but good manners and good grammar go a long way, which is why I married my husband.

Anyway!

It’s a good movie if you’re looking for something to watch on date night (Side note: It was co-written by Sylvester Stallone. Who would’ve thunk it?).

Now, just so I don’t leave you without anything makeup-related whatsoever, here are a whole lotta lip swatches from Origins…

origins lipsticks
New lipsticks and balms by Origins ($20 each)

Origins just relaunched a line of really, REALLY good lipsticks and lip balms. They’re super moisturizing, smooth, and they don’t settle into lip lines.

The lipsticks are similar to the MAC Amplified Cremes (hella pigmented!), but the balms are sheer and moisturizing like the NARS Orgasm Lip Balm that came out last spring. I have one in every pocket of every coat.

They’re addictive that way.

From the PR:

What It Is:
Kissed by nature. Made with 12 flowers, this long-wear lipstick provides bold, rich, full-coverage color that hydrates & conditions, stays color-true & lasts all day. Available in 24 fresh-picked shades.

Infused with Crushed Petals, repurposed Buttery Flower Waxes, Flower Honeys & Essential Oils, this full-coverage lipstick packs a punch of color without skimping on what’s important. Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 552

November 26th, 2018 by Karen 32 Comments

always find time monday poll
A gentle reminder for the week ahead.

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

1. Topknot or blowout?

Blowout…but only if someone else does it for me!

2. Have you ever tried doing soap brows?

No, but I really, really want to! I keep meaning to get a bar of glycerine soap whenever I go to Target, but I keep forgetting. I love the brushed-up brow look.

3. Coldest place you’ve ever visited?

Um…Lake Tahoe? In general, I try to stay away from the cold because I’m a weather wimp.

4. Have you ever grown out your armpit hair?

Nope! I don’t think I’ve ever seen my ‘pits in their natural state. I started shaving them right when I started growing body hair.

5. Do you have anything (charms, necklaces, etc.) hanging from your rear-view mirror?

I vaguely recall hanging my college graduation tassel from the rear-view mirror of my old red Honda Civic (nicknamed “Claude”) way back when, but I can’t remember where it went!

My parents adopted that car after I got a new one about a decade ago. In the intervening years, it was broken into a couple times, got stolen, then was lost for a year, then was found by the police (I KNOW!) and returned to my parents.

Now they keep it around as a backup car.

Somewhere along the way, that graduation tassel disappeared somewhere.

So I ended up not getting any Spanx leggings on Black Friday…

But they’re still on my Christmas list. After being brutally honest with myself about my closet — and the huge stack of black leggings I currently own — I decided it would be wiser to use my clothing budget on some affordable dresses at LOFT (50% off sale!), which I’ll be able to dress up or down. Plus, THEY’RE NOT PANTS. Ha ha ha!

Did you end up getting anything on Black Friday? Or do you plan to get something on Cyber Monday today?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Question time! Here they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 529

November 25th, 2018 by Karen 7 Comments

When you’re well into your second decade of life, sometimes you can’t help but look back at the cats, toddlers and humans you’ve known, the places you’ve been, the flowers you’ve sniffed, the collars you’ve rocked, and the makeup looks you’ve inspired.

Call it a fall career retrospective, if you will. Tabs (and I) got a little emo today looking back at old pics from falls of yore.

Fall has always been one of Tabs’ favorite times of year, and not just because the turkeys are plump and the grass is extra green and tasty, but also because of fall fashion.
