Are There Any Magazines You Used to Love But No Longer Read?

October 3rd, 2018 by Karen 48 Comments

allure nylon magazine

Oh, my gosh, I’ve subscribed to so many… Vogue, Nylon, Real Simple, Better Homes and Gardens, Shape, Popular Photography, Self, The New Yorker, The Economist, Runner’s World… You name it, and at one point in my life I probably had a subscription to it!

Back when I apparently had all the time in the world to read, one of my favorite things to do was tear into a new issue of a magazine on the couch. It still is, but I’ve whittled my way down to three subscriptions now (Allure, Glamour and Entertainment Weekly), and I’m thinking about dropping Glamour…because I can’t remember the last time I read something in there that I could relate to.

Mostly, when I do have blocks of time in which to read now, I’d rather make headway on a book than a magazine, because magazines are like snacks, ya know? And books are like an actual meal.

Are there any magazines you used to love but no longer read anymore? Inquiring minds want to know.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Speaking of meals, I made a massive quantity of this Taco Chili from Iowa Girl Eats (she does gluten-free recipes) a few nights ago and wanted to jooj up the leftovers, so yesterday for lunch I plopped a little of Trader Joe’s Mac and Cheese and some sliced green onions on top…

OH, YEAH. It was SO good! You gotta try that mac and cheese thing with your chili if you haven’t already. It will change your life.

Kiss ‘n’ Telling on the New MAC Powder Kiss Lipsticks

October 2nd, 2018 by Karen 28 Comments

mac powder kiss lipstick
Besos!

I just want your extra time and your mwah-mwah-mwah-mwah-mwah, KISS!

New Powder Kiss Lipsticks from MAC! These mattes feel just like the luscious Chanel Rouge Allure Velvets — lightweight, so more like a lip balm than a lipstick — but even creamier. So there’s little-to-no chance of cat butt lips. (I can hear you sighing from relief.) And, dare I say it, they’re kinda moisturizing? Just a little.

  • Must apply on dry lips (NON NEGOTIABLE!); otherwise, patchy
  • Taste and smell like vanilla, so classic MAC
  • Will move outside your natural lip line if you rub your lips together a lot
  • Special matte packaging (did you catch that?)
  • Pigment levels — between medium and just shy of full, depending on color
  • Less pigmented than MAC Matte lipsticks
  • Fade after a meal or a cup of coffee
  • Wear time is about an hour — two, tops
  • Watch out for vertical lip lines with the paler beige colors and pinks (they will highlight them if you apply too much).
  • Stand-outs: Mull It Over (a dirty peach) for everyday wear, and Fall in Love (a bright creamy fuchsia) for special occasions
  • I’m still tracking down prices, but it’s safe to assume they’ll be priced similar to regular MAC lipsticks, so about $18.50. Each lippie is $19, and they’re all permanent

Final take? These are a’ight… They feel really smooth and lightweight, and the hazy matte finish is trés “I’m rock ‘n’ roll and too cool to care,” but the formula scoots around a lot and doesn’t last long on my lips. If you’re going for this type of soft matte look, the Chanel Velvets look very similar, and while they’re more expensive at $37, I think they’re user-friendlier because they don’t move around as much. Plus, they last longer.

If you’re curious, you can smooch the 16 MAC Powder Kiss Lipsticks starting October 11th, which is when they arrive at select MAC counters and the MAC website. 🙂

Well this FINALLY happened

crazy rich asians
IT ONLY TOOK FOREVER.

I broke my personal vow to only read books I can check out out from the library (don’t ask me why I do these things; I just do!) and bought Crazy Rich Asians because I still couldn’t find the book at the library for like the 20th time. I just couldn’t take it anymore, LOL!

When Did Kids Costumes Get So Intense?

October 2nd, 2018 by Karen 48 Comments

Flora Deer Costume ($95) from the PinkPompon etsy shop

OK, so, Halloween is just around the corner, and as always holidays have a way of sneaking up on me (says the girl who’s shopped for Christmas presents on December 24th many, many times). I’d be overjoyed to be able to cross everything off my Halloween to-do list early, so I’ve been hunting for Halloween costumes for Connor (and Tabs and myself, too!) since last week.

Searching for “toddler girl costumes” on etsy has me thinking about kids costumes… Seriously, when did they get so intense? My first costume, which I wore one year in kindergarten, was Big Bird, and it was a plastic body sheath with a plastic mask that had holes in it for the eyes, nose and mouth (I have vivid memories of barely being able to breathe in it, but you do what you gotta do for free candy, ya know?). It was simple, cheap and effective. And memorable.

Now, though, there are kids costumes that look fit for a Broadway play, like this little girl in her Audrey Hepburn Breakfast at Tiffanys getup…

Audrey Hepburn Dress, $69.99, from the AllDressedUpCouture etsy shop

WOW! All that tulle… And the accessories! Wasn’t Holly Golightly a “lady of the night”?? Never mind — that’s a whole ‘nother post.

While I can’t deny that these costumes look super cute, I can’t help but wonder… When did kids costumes get so complicated? Oh! — and pricey? A lot of the cuter ones on etsy are upwards of $80.

Benefit Set a New Guinness Book of World Records Record in the Brow Arts!

October 1st, 2018 by Karen 7 Comments

Among the things I’ve accomplished thus far in my life…

  • Met the sweetest, most loving, most fashionable feline in the greater Bay Area and quite possibly the world, and it officially turned me into a full-tilt crazy cat lady.
  • Found THE ULTIMATE BROWNIE RECIPE.
  • Totally embarrassed myself in front of François Nars.

And now I can add witnessing the setting of a Guinness world record in the brow arts to the list!

Dude, I was obsessed with the Guinness Book of World’s Records when I was a kid (was I the only one?). The latest edition was always the first book I grabbed off the shelf at the school book fair.

So, when Benefit asked me if I wanted to bear witness to Guinness World Record history (and that it would also have something to do with brows), you better believe Raul and I said yes.

The event took place last Friday in San Francisco’s Union Square, where Benefit set a new Guinness World Record for — wait for it — the most people filling in their eyebrows simultaneously, and hi — they did it just in time for October 2nd, which is National Brow Day, a.k.a. the Super Bowl of Brows in Benefit’s world.

Yes, brow history was set by 295 Bene-babes and dudes (a few were dudes) of all ages…

Fun fact: If you’re going to set a record for filling in brows, all of the participants need to remove their existing brow product first…because you gotta take ’em off before you can put them back on.

The actual brow products were provided by Benefit goody bags, and the participants then waited to make history in one of the two designated hot pink brow waiting areas marked in the middle of the square.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 544

October 1st, 2018 by Karen 35 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?

1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later?

Now, obviously. Is someone bringing coffee?? If not, I volunteer as tribute, since there can be no ? doughnuts without ☕ coffee.

2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara?

Not for, like, legit purposes, HA HA HA! Like, I’ve never won a pageant or been a queen or a ? princess in a parade… I actually do own a tiara, though! I wore it for Halloween a few years ago when I dressed up as the girl from the cover of Hole’s Live Through This album.

I have to say…it was surprisingly comfortable! I should bust that thing out again.

3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes?

Girl, this question is just rude. OK…after much internal debate (imagine not ever having to fill out your brows, EVER!), I choose the naturally longer lashes, because I think I’d get more bang for my buck.

4. Something you’re completely and totally over?

Frozen yogurt.

5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose?

Disneyland ? Paris, because hey! — I’d be in Paris. ?

Hold me…

Seriously, HOLD. ME. As tight as you possibly can! Because every time I walk into TJ’s temptation beckons from every corner.

Remember the sugar skulls from last year? They’re baaaaack. And dare I say cuter than they were the last time around? They didn’t do much for me when I first saw them but now I’m feeling them. Must be the black skull with the aloe (most succulents don’t do a damn for me, but I’ve got a thing for aloe, go figure).

Of course the limited edition snack situation is all that and a bag of birthday cake popcorn right now (yes, you heard me right).

I popped in yesterday to buy some honeycrisp apples (my fave), and in the quick lap I did around the store, I found many, many tasty treats.

The only treat I picked up was this grapefruit scrub though…

What do you think of that Carrot Cake Spread? I think it could be really good or really gross.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Question time! Here are they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.

Fall is a time to take feline fashion chances, which Tabs did so boldly today with his new Meow-velous Monarch Cat Corsage, because, as you know, true fashion mastery is all about the accessories.

And the posing, of course…

Saturday Surfing, September 29th, 2018

September 29th, 2018 by Karen 16 Comments

Hello, friend. Good morning! Only two more sleeps till October. That’s just crazy to me.

So I was outside watering the plants on my deck this morning, a.k.a. the Lady Sanctuary, and I’m trying to figure out what the heck I’m gonna do with that space later this fall and winter… The plants are still hanging on, but they won’t be much longer.

Every summer I plant a lush little cat-safe garden back there (it’s on the deck off my bedroom, which is above the deck that has the Tabby Command Center), and every year I just let the plants slowly wither through the winter, mostly because I don’t hang out much on the deck when it’s cold, not that it really gets THAT cold in the Bay Area, but still… Cold enough to not want to be out there.

But it’s kind of depressing when I open my bedroom curtains around Christmas and see a bunch of sad, dead foliage, so maybe if I jooj-ed it up with some fall and winter plants, I’d be motivated enough to take care of them? I dunno… I don’t know anything about gardening in winter. Maybe I should start with a winter test garden with just three or four plants? What do you think? I know there are a bunch of gals here on MBB who are kindred spirits with ‘ze plants. Please halp.

Hmm… While I contemplate botany and breakfast, here are some articles to get you going on this lovely Caturday.

  • Makeup is a full-body, 360-degree thing when makeup artists prepare celebs for the stage or red carpet. Not only do artists have to consider their clients’ faces, but also their arms, necks and feet!
  • Most American men don’t wear makeup, but that might be changing, as more and more men look at makeup and beauty as part of “self care.”
  • Dust off your old pink velour tracksuit (the one you wore EVERYWHERE in 1999), because Juicy Couture’s coming out with a new makeup line.
  • NYX just launched a library of beauty how-to videos called Masterclass, where you can learn from industry artists like Patrick Ta (he does makeup for Gigi Hadid; I’ve been following his career since forever!), as well as popular YouTube influencers.
  • Why is dating app Bumble releasing a skin care line? Maybe their reasons are similar to 7-Eleven’s. Many large companies that previously didn’t have any ties to the fashion or cosmetics worlds are coming out with their own beauty products or collaborating with beauty brands.
  • I’m totally not a nail art person (I’m so bad at it, unless it’s basic), but I think I have the skills to handle this Sharpie manicure.
  • Photography stalwart Canon’s latest printer does a bunch of cool things, but most importantly, IT PRINTS OUT NAIL ART.
  • A Swedish grocery chain just released a fragrance that smells like rotten milk… Eau du no thanks!
  • Do you like surprises? If you do, you might love the new mystery kits Sephora is releasing for the holidays.
  • —–> Favorite story of the week
  • If you merged foundation with tinted moisturizer, you’d get this.
  • Sephora and Ulta’s fight for the $48.3 billion makeup industry…

The history behind Sephora and Ulta in the US and their ongoing battle for customers

ENJOY

Nope, I’m not crying.

Gorgeous. On repeat at the moment.

See ya later! 🙂

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

September 28th, 2018 by Karen 24 Comments

put on her brave

1. Sending random cards to friends out of the blue

I’ve always liked getting a note or a card in the mail from a friend “just because,” so I’ve started sending cards to friends randomly just to say hello. If I’m at Target I’ll pick one up, since I’m there anyway. (Side note: They have a HUGE greeting card section, although to be honest I kind of miss Hallmark stores. There was something so soothing about going to one. Anywho!)

It only takes a minute to write a quick hello, and it makes me feel good knowing that the person on the other end will get a surprise.

2. Honey and Lemon in Trader Joe’s Fall Harvest Tea

At least one person in our family has had a cold at any given moment every single day since Connor stepped foot in preschool last August, and I’m totally over it… Everyone tells me it gets better after a few months? Is that true? I hope so… POWERS THAT BE, GIVE ME STRENGTH!

trader joes harvest blend tea

I’ve been guzzling hot tea lately (specifically TJ’s Fall Harvest) with honey and lemon because the combo is pure magic. It soothes my sore throats, calms my cough and tastes really good!

3. The special edition Allure Best of Beauty

I devoured this the other night in one sitting! Cracked it open when I got into bed and read it from cover to cover.

allure best of beauty cover rihanna

It’s been a long time since I’ve said that about this magazine. I almost cancelled Allure last year because it seemed to have gotten to be less about beauty and more about celebrity worship (there was a spell there when every other month had a Kardashian or a Jenner on the cover, and I was immediately tossing them into the recycling). This particular Best of Beauty issue is filled with product recommendations (which I totally appreciate), but it also has more in-depth stories than usual. I really enjoyed it!
