Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 342

October 13th, 2014 by Karen 20 Comments

Monday Poll, October 14, 2014

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. If I ever become rich and famous I’m going to __________.
    • Ask Beyonce and Jay-Z over for tea.
    • Yell at the paparazzi to “get the hell off my lawn!”
    • Start a rescue cat sanctuary and adoption center (complete with hugely elaborate outdoor cat enclosure play space) for needy Northern California kitties.
    • Buy a Volvo with fantastic side visibility and power locks. (My current car doesn’t have automatic locks, and I hate when I’m walking to my car someplace isolated or dark, like an indoor parking structure, and I have to get my keys out to open the door. Doesn’t feel safe.) I’m not a car person at all, but I’ve always wanted a Volvo. I hear they’re supposed to be very safe and reliable.
    • Fly first class to Thailand for vacation on a whim.
    • Build a fancy personal library.
  2. What’s a mascara you find yourself buying over and over again?
Good, old reliable Chanel Le Volume de Chanel. I never get tired of the great volume and curl hold, and it has TONS of big drama.
  3. Your biggest boy band crush (or any band, for that matter) growing up?
“You’ve got the right stuff…baby.” (Um, NKOTB, hello!)
  4. Ponchos: yes or no?
OK, I like the idea of wearing something that resembles a blanket (you can sleep in it any ol’ time!), but I’m going to have to go with no. I’ve tried ’em, and they don’t work for me. I look like I belong in Middle Earth.

  5. In general, is your daytime makeup routine very different from your going out/evening makeup routine?
Actually, not really. I don’t have any strict rules when it comes to colors or coverage for daytime versus night. As long as I feel good in what I’m wearing, I’m down for whatever.

Le List

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

Hello, sweet friend!

Before I get to your Karl quote of the week, The Walking Dead season premiere last night. I haven’t seen it yet! We got in a little late last night, but I recorded it, so I’m going to watch it tonight. Please, no spoilers. I beg you.

And for your Karl-Lag quote for the week..

“What I love best in life is new starts.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

Me, too, Karl. Me too. On that note, I hope your Monday got off to a great start. 🙂

7 Ways to Win a $50 eGift Card From Sephora! (Ends Monday)

October 11th, 2014 by Karen 320 Comments

Win a $50 Sephora e-gift card

Only one long training run left before the half marathon next week! I think I finally got the chafing under control, thanks to the CW-X Running Bra and good old-fashioned Vaseline, and I’m going to try out the neat-looking Roo Sport Fitness Pouch, a small belt-less pouch with a magnetic fastener for carrying your cell phone, ID, credit card and, in my case, two Tri Berry GU Energy Gels, today on the treadmill.

But first! — Gilmore Girls and giveaways. 🙂

I am so hooked on that show it’s ridiculous. I don’t want to go anywhere or do anything else. I just want to sit on the couch watching Gilmore Girls and fantasize about living in the town of Stars Hollow. I could have breakfast and coffee at Luke’s Diner and then go shop for makeup at Stars Hollow Beauty Supply, LOL!

See, I told you. Ridiculous.

Well, that’s it for me. Good luck in this weekend’s giveaway, and hopefully I see you in the comments or on Twitter and Instagram today. Have a great caturday, my friend! Good luck!

Win a $50 gift card from Sephora

  • One (1) Sephora eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

  • Enter using the Rafflecopter widget below.
  • Open to U.S. and international readers.
  • You must be 18 or older to enter (or otherwise an adult based on your local laws).
  • Your comment can be about anything at all, but here are some ideas if you’re stuck:
    • What’s your favorite fictional town (town from a TV show, book or movie)?
    • Have you ever painted a room or a piece of furniture yourself?
    • Best indie or up-and-coming makeup brand?
    • Are you going to dress up this year for Halloween? Do you have your costume figured out?
    • Have you ever slept on a waterbed?
    • Honestly, have you ever pet a penguin (I’d be surprised if anyone says yes to this!)?
  • You can enter in up to seven ways to boost your chances of winning.
  • The giveaway ends on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 11:59 PM (Pacific Time). 🙂
  • Full terms and conditions are available in the widget.

To quote the great Elvis Presley, “Lord Almighty, I feel my temperature risin’!”

Could it be? — Burning Love? A NARS Lipgloss named after my favorite Elvis song, ever?

BURNING LOVE!

Something tells me The King might not be edgy enough (anymore) to get his own too-cool-for-school NARS reference, but a girl can dream… I want to believe that The King’s rhinestone-encrusted jumpsuits played a part in this shimmer. 🙂

Burning Love, a bright ruby with subtle shimmer, is one of three new $26 Lipglosses in the 13-pieced Laced With Edge holiday collection, along with shimmery pink raspberry Corsica and shimmery pink champagne Soleil D’Orient.

You can find them twinkling at NARS boutiques and online October 15, and at department and specialty stores beginning November 1.

Same NARS gloss formula, non-sticky, unflavored and comfortable, even on my dry lips.

It’s Going to Be a Merry Lips-Mas With the NARS Laced With Edge Holiday Collection Lipsticks in Deadly Catch, Femme Fleur and Adriatic

The Hardwired-ness continues. To keep the new Hardwired Eyeshadows company, NARS is also releasing a new Hardwired lipstick formulation, with three new lipsticks ($26 each) in glistening cream Adriatic, crimson Deadly Catch, shimmery brick red Femme Fleur (also has gold pearl).

First impressions…

The feather-weight formula feels great, and I can barely feel these on my lips, but they don’t seem to last as long as the Audacious formula. These may be a good fit if you don’t like to feel like you’re wearing a ton of product on your pout.

Vertical lip lines can also breathe a sigh of relief, in general, as the two shimmery shades, shimmery Adriatic and Femme Fleur, don’t settle into my fine lines. The finish looks really smooth and expensive (reminds me of Guerlain’s Kiss Kiss lipsticks).

Now about that wear time…it’s not my favorite thing about these. Adriatic only lasts 2-3 hours for me, while Deadly Catch and Femme Fleur manage 3-5.

These unflavored, unscented lipsticks will be available along with the rest of the 13-piece Laced With Edge Holiday collection at NARS boutiques and online October 15, and at department and specialty stores beginning November 1.

P.S. I am so overjoyed right now. 🙂 Got some takeout Pasta Pomodoro for dinner (capolini tre colore with shrimp) and Gilmore Girls playing on the TV. Oh, yeah… Good times. I hope you’re having a good night.

Lopsided Liner? Wonky Wings? Try These 3 Easy Makeup Tips for More Balanced, Symmetrical Eye Makeup

October 10th, 2014 by Karen 10 Comments

After driving into the city last night to pick up my race bib for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon (only nine more days!), El Hub and I stopped in Sausalito for dinner on the way back.

We went to this little sushi place on Caledonia Street called Sweet Ginger, and I was munching on my mango, avocado and sweet potato tempura veggie roll and staring at my race bib number: 22822.

I am by no means a hard-core runner, but I’ve run a handful of short races before, and I can’t say that I’ve ever had a memorable bib number.

They’re usually a nondescript string of random numerals, like from a UPC barcode on a bottle of laundry detergent or reduced fat peanut butter, but this one — 22822 — feels like a sign. The only thing better would’ve been a bunch of nines, since nine is my lucky number.

Anyway, I love this number. A lot. 🙂

I love how symmetrical it is and how the eight looks in the middle, and how if you turn the bib sideways, the eight makes an infinity sign (ooh!).

The number is also a palindrome.

Symmetry. Balance. Elusive concepts in makeup and life, but at least my half marathon bib rocks ’em!

Dude, I think you feel my pain. Symmetrical makeup is hard, especially when it comes to thick, bold liner, or darker colors in the crease.

At least it’s hard for me. I really have to work at it, but my eyes are slightly different shapes (it’s true). If you have perfectly symmetrical features, consider yourself #blessed. My eyes aren’t symmetrical at all (my left eye is slightly smaller than the right, and it sits a smidgen lower).

I think about symmetry a lot this time of year, when the fall and holiday colors show up, because I start wearing bolder eye looks on the regular, and as someone whose features aren’t perfectly symmetrical, here are a few tips that help me create more symmetrical eye makeup.

1. Keep both eyes open, head straight, and look directly into the mirror

I see you!

Worst Handbag or Clothing Mishap Involving Makeup?

October 10th, 2014 by Karen 19 Comments

Oh! I have a good one.

I was in my early 20s at the time. I got an invite to a house party, but it was a themed house party, where you had to show up all dressed in white. I can’t remember why that was the theme or who hosted the shindig, but what I do remember is the epic makeup mishap that happened at home as I was about to walk out the door.

My hair and makeup were done, and I vaguely recall wearing white eyeliner on the water line to match my all-white ensemble, haha! As if anyone other than a makeup lover would have noticed. Suddenly, with my purse and keys in hand, I realized that I’d forgotten to set my foundation with powder.

*shakes head*

So, genius that I am, instead of taking the extra 60 seconds to find a pressed compact with translucent powder, something like MAC Blot for instance, I grabbed the closest thing on the bathroom shelf — a huge jar of tinted loose powder in a honey caramel color. I think it was from BECCA.

Of course, because I was running late (what, me late?), I was hurrying, and ya know, butterfingers and all…I opened the jar with a little too much “enthusiasm.”

The lid flew open, fell to the floor and BOOM! A mushroom cloud of honey colored powder exploded in my bathroom.

Powder was all over the place — the floor, the walls, on my face, in my hair, and yes, all over my white party outfit.

HOT MESS.

Needless to say, I didn’t make it to the party… I spent the rest of the evening cleaning powder off myself and every surface in the bathroom.

Good times. 🙂

The New NARS Algorithm Laguna Bronzing Powder Palette: A Seemingly Giant (But Actually Smaller Than Normal) Laguna Is the Variable in This Algorithm

October 9th, 2014 by Karen 17 Comments

For the love of tubby tabbies, why can’t I spell the word “algorithm”!?

I keep wanting to spell it algo-rhythm, which sounds like some kind of weird exercise class where you crunch numbers and abs.

“Welcome to Algo-Rhythm! Where Zumba and calculus collide!”

I also can’t figure out why this NARS Algorithm Laguna Bronzing Palette is seems so huge (it’s 0.24 ounces, which I only realized after I published this post is actually smaller than the regular NARS Laguna Bronzer’s 0.28 ounces, but for some reason it just seemed bigger to me). Or expensive. It’s $89!

I mean, I love NARS Laguna, but it’s already in almost every single NARS blush palette. It’s not like I’m gonna be running out of it anytime soon. This pan alone could conceivably last the rest of the decade.

*Shrugs shoulders* I guess some people really like Laguna.

The palette also comes with a mini-sized NARS Ita Brush, which I think is just OK… I need to spend more time with it, though, because so far, I keep having to finish my blending with a fluffy brush after using it.

If you want to decipher this Algorhythm Algorithm, it arrives at department and specialty stores, online, and at NARS boutiques November 1.
